TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3392:

Last night was the April 2011 meetup of Semantink's Comic Savvy at Milano Coffee Company in the Mission Valley area of San Diego, California.

Due to family illnesses in Los Angeles & San Diego that I had to attend, I had missed the March 2011 meet-up, so no, you didn't miss an earlier blog reporting on what happened at that meet-up!

(Here's the link to the February 20th, 2011 Meet-Up, that I attended.)

The fact that the nation had set their clocks forward an hour meant that we met in hours that were still light, which is good, because as usual we met outside in the porch area at 5 PM.  Actually several of us were there earlier.  The 'official hours' of the meet-up are 5PM to 7PM, but several, including myself  were having so much fun attending that we were there until 7:30 PM!

I've included a couple of pics at the top right of this post, with names of those in attendance, (Sorry, not all are pictured... And please excuse any name misspellings!).  Because of the limitations of this blog format, I've built a 'special photo album' titled 'April 2011 Semantink's Comic Savvy Meet-Up' at my Facebook Fan Page for you to see all that were in attendance, if YOU weren't there!  And to 'tag' yourself if you attended!

Ben Glibert, Director of Publishing at Semantink Publishing, came in after the meet-up officially ended, due to a prior committment.  When James Michael Ninness, Writer / Creator at Semantink also, doesn't officiate as meet-up co-ordinator for the evening, Ben does... However last night night James was out of town.

So we had Chris(topher) Henderson, co-owner of SanBox, as the meet-up cordinator.  Chris kept the meetup on track with several different topics, and all that attended gave their input or opinions during the evening. Great job, Chris!

Several that were in attendance last night had been to the WonderCon that was held in San Francisco earlier in the month.  They stated their opinions of the con, and what they saw there.  The general consensus was that it was a 'grat con'!  The Green Lantern trailer that was specially shown there was impressive to those that saw it on the Big Screen in person!

The upcoming Free Comic Book Day for 2011 was discussed.  Several in attendance are carpooling to the Los Angeles Metro Area to attend a special gathering at a LCBS there.

Additional topics were discussed, and there were several sub-discussions going on at the same time.

The meetup has grown in size so much, that there was a discussion about future avenues to 'meet-up' at.  I'll keep you posted on that.  I mentioned to my wife, Tina, last night that there was interest in meeting at a local wine bar, which I'm sure she would like to attend!  She's been working so hard on her book launches for clients that she needs a wine bar experience soon!

Before I close with this month's 'mini-report'... I, as usual, had a  question I wanted to hear opinions on from those also in attendance for this blog post.

Also, as customary, I brought a 'freebie' for those kind enough to answer my blog question.  This month it was a movie poster for the Priest in 3D Film that is being released on May 13th in the USA and Canada.

My question was formulated due to the special segment shown on the 'Showbiz Tonight' TV show last week.  That segment was on the superheroes comic book movies that are coming out soon... Green Lantern, Thor, Captain America, and the X-Men.

I asked those in attendance which of the four just named they most wanted to see... And then what they thought 'mainstream' America would most likely turn out to see at the Big Screen.  Here's the results, which may surprise you!

Attendees at the Meet-Up as to what THEY wanted to see most:

Green Lantern   -  6%

Thor             - 12%

Captain America - 44%

X-Men           -  38%

As to what they thought mainstream America wanted to see most:

Green Lantern    - 19%

Thor              - 44%

Captain America  -  0%

X-Men            - 37%

The above statistics show that those know comics are more likely to view Captain America, while they understand that 'Mainstream America' is not likely to show up at all for this film.  Marvel has a BIG Job in promoting this film better... However I am one of those in the 44% attending that am making this my #1 'Must See' choice to see at the Big Screen!

And yes, although the 'buzz' at the WonderCon and on the internet since it was released, was on the Green Lantern film... It has been so long in coming to the Big Screen... That the interest in seeing this film has already peaked with those in attendance...!

Again, this is NOT a 'scientific' survey, as those attending are comic book fans and / or those that work in the industry... Thus they have a better 'clue' as to what those characters that are being featured in their own films are all about!

My thanks once again to Semantink Publishing sponsoring this monthly meet-up.  Here's the Facebook link to the event that just occurred, and here's the link to Semantink's Facebook Fan Page, which I encourage YOU to 'Like'!  Plus check out their several comic book series that are online.  When they publish hard copies of those in TPBs, I'll be sure to review blog them here!

Semantink's Comic Savvy is normally the 3rd Sunday of every month, which has been held at the Milano Coffee Company in Mission Valley.  There has been a recent change in ownership there, and with the increasing number of persons in attendance in recent months, the meet-up may have outgrown this location.  If there is a change, I'll mention it  in my next wall post at my own Facebook Fan Page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics'.

Till then...Have Some Fun!  Oh, and don't forget to check out the rest of the pics that weren't shown here at the blog, in the special photo album just for THIS meet-up!
