Wyatt Earp....

So Many Versions!

I have to admit rembering the Hugh O'Brian version of Wyatt Earp on the TV show... yes I am that old, (baby boomer) !!

The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp was a western television series that was loosely based upon the adventures of the frontier marshal Wyatt Earp. It was a half-hour black and white series that ran on ABC-TV from 1955 to 1961 and featured Hugh O'Brian as Wyatt Earp.

Amazingly, an off-camera barbershop quartet sings the theme song and hums the catchy background music in the early episodes of this TV show!

Dell Comics printed a series of Wyatt Earp comics, after publishing three issues in the 'Four Color Comics' run. The photo covers with Hugh  is the main reason for this title's collector popularity, (see comic book cover to the top left for example). The issues ran from #4 (September 1958) thru #13 ending in December, 1960.

Growing up in the 1950's I watched a lot of westerns on TV.   I didn't get to see many western movies until the mid 1960's as they cost money and I was buying comics for my entertainment with my allowance instead.

When looking for Wyatt Earp comics based upon my nostalgia for the TV Show, I came across Wyatt Earp comics from Atlas Comics that were published from November 1955 to June 1960. They had nothing to do with the Hugh O'Brian portrayal of Earp, but this Earp version was also printed in Gunsmoke Western, also published by Atlas.   Marvel Comics, (Atlas' sucessor), reprinted some of these stories from issue #30 to 34 from 1972 - 1973.

Charlton Comics also got into the Wyatt Earp business about the same time with their Wyatt Earp, Frontier Marshall comic in January 1956. Earp's name must have been in the public domain, as they had issues #12 thru #72 which ran until December 1967.

My main interest in Wyatt Earp was the TV show and the spinoff comics. However I do enjoy the Atlas/Marvel version also.  I would not put Hugh's version up there with either Roy Rogers, or  Gene Autry, but it was a good representation of the late 1950's cowboy heroes TV Shows.

For those interested in Wyatt Earp Comics we have listed them in our eBay Featured Store .  We have many more western comic books also!

Not 'The Secret' To Life...

But The Secret of MARVEL Comics!

Outstanding Presentation by Two Masters Stan Lee and John Buscema!

The Secret of Marvel Comics Is The Artwork per Stan Lee in this DVD! The artwork must have ACTION in each panel!

This is definitely worth watching at least once if you enjoy the Marvel Universe co-created by Stan Lee and many artists including Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, Bill Everett, Dick Ayers and several more in the early 1960's!

I was able to meet John Buscema once at the San Diego Comic Con International, the year before he passed away. I had never seen this film or DVD before, so it was a pleasure watching Stan and
John converse together and talk to the viewer of the DVD also.

'Marvel Action' is what counts in drawing comics for Marvel Comics! And in this DVD instructional video there is plenty of it!!

The film is broken down into chapters and doesn't gloss over the art, but then again isn't too techie either, so that the casual
fan that doesn't want to be an artist would also enjoy viewing it.

A high recommendation on this DVD (and even the Book) to all that love the Marvel Universe, and want to see Stan for more than just a five minute interview. Watching John draw and explain what he does is also a highlight of this film.

Thanks for reading this popular culture - comics - comic books blog post!

NOTE:  This is a re-post from last Season, as we now average approximately 600 visitors a day now! This repost is to let our new blog visitors see what we thought of last Season's final episodes so they can see where we are 'coming from':

Well, It's Over.... "America" voted Jordin Sparks The 2007 American Idol last night!

It was a looooong night before Ryan read the results, but a lot of different genres of music were presented before the night was over!

Tina and I  had mixed feelings on the music played last night:

We both liked the Top 6 Boys singing with Smokey Robinson.

We both were entertained by Doug E Fresh and Blake Lewis beat-boxing.

Gladys Knight and the Top 6 Girls were fun to watch.

It was strange seeing Blake and Jordin singing 'I Saw Her/Him Standing There' to open the show.

I liked Sanjaya's rendition of the Kinks 'You Really Got Me!' along with Joe Perry of Aerosmith. Tina thought I was kidding....

Tina thought it was cool that 'Green Day' performed.  I didn't.

I enjoyed Taylor Hicks solo performance. It reminded me how much I enjoyed last season!

Just before the end of the night, Tina was in agony through the Beatles medley... "why why why are they doing this to us?"  Tina also thought Reuben singing 'Lucy In the Sky' was horrifying!

I thought that beginning a Beatles medley was fine, but it ended at 9:58 p.m. !!!  Although I did enjoy Chris Sligh starting 'With A Little Help From My Friends'!  The show was definitely going into overtime, ending at 10:08 our time!

A record 74 million votes the previous night, a new record for American Idol.  American Idol is to return January 2008 !

Please see our previous American Idol blog post 'OUR TAKE' on our thoughts of this past Tuesday night's performances, (all six songs) by the Final Two, Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis.

The following are our thoughts on the results:

Tina - said upon hearing Jordin was the new 'American Idol', "Big surprise", sarcastically.

Michael - I wasn't as pleased as I was at the end of last season when Taylor Hicks won.... I had been invested in him before the end... Neither Jordin or Blake were overwhelmingly my favorites during the season.  Tina still can't believe I voted for Blake the last two weeks, as I never listen to the kind of music he prefers to perform!

NEXT WEEK:  What NO NEXT WEEK???!! ..... Well then, it's time to say Thanks to ALL of YOU that have checked our blog posts this Season!  Special Thanks to YOU that took the time to post your comment(s) on our blog posts!  That is what makes it fun for us to continue blogging!

Including This Fan!

She Appeared At The SDCC Convention!

There are those that wonder what are some of the reasons to go to conventions when they are in season.

One of the fun things to do at pop culture or comic book conventions is to either dress up like your favorite comic book character or TV Show / Movie Star...

Some persons are more flamboyant and wear 'outrageous' unique costumes, while others come dressed as well known characters!

The gal to top left came to the SDCC 2007 as Xena, without Gabrielle, but there were several Gabrielles also at the Con!

We'll be sure to have pics of the 2008 costumed attendees posted later this year!

For those interested in Xena comic books from Topps in 1997-1998 or Dark Horse 1999, we have several listed in our eBay Featured Store. Xena was published as mini-series by Topps, while Dark Horse published one unlimited series.

Thanks for reading our pop culture - comics - comic book blog post!
