Small Press Idol 2009 Enters Round Three!

May 18th - June 7th 2009

Tonight American Idol 2009... Starts its' Finale Week.   As Tina and I have been fans of that series we have mixed emotions as to it entering the final stage for this Season.

However I have another 'Idol' that is in Round 3 of a 4 Round battle!  That would be Small Press Idol 2009, where Round 3 is now underway!

Yesterday, May 18th was the start of this all important Round for 20 projects that made it to this Round.

Yet as of this morning, the 19th of May, projects are still posting, going through the judging, and are opening to public voting, as you read this blog post.

You would have thought that all 20 projects would already be posted as of yesterday.  Especially after all the hustling for votes at the end of Round 2 just to make up for lost time!

However only 7 of the 20 projects that made it to Round 3 are 'In Judging' right now!

That's right... Only 7 projects are posted and ready for your votes.  This to me, makes for a 'soft' Opening Day for Round 3... and the pressure will build to make up for lost time in the days to come, that's for sure!

According to the web site, the projects will continue to "post" until May 24th.  So there is a cutoff to submit the initial comic book pages of each project.  This after Round 1 where the idea and a sketch about the project was submitted.  Then Round 2 where character bios and more detailed sketches were submitted.

Round 3 is where You the potential voter can go in and download the initial pages to view actual comic pages and see how the idea and sketches transform into the comic book format.

I already starting downloading the projects that were actually available to do that yesterday. It is kinda neat to see how those projects are being transformed into actual comic books, so I invite you to check out a few if not more as the days go on...

Here's the most important part of Round 3 for the contestants.  Voting will continue until the 7th of June. As You and I watch the days until June 7th, we will see who will get a #0 issue in Round 4, who will be given a Cover Feature slot in 'Mysterious Visions' publication, and who unfortunately, doesn't...

That's because only 3 of the 20 projects will be moving on to Round 4 to compete for the $700 Grand Prize and publishing deal. The Big Question is... Will it be the project YOU were here to support?

That is up to You and of course the project creators themselves with what they present in comic book for you to vote for.  I'm sure You, as well as I will be bombarded with requests to vote, and vote daily.

For full details of Small Press Idol 2009, Round 3 and its' 20 Contestants please see the main site:

As of May 18th 2009

Click Here To See Our Newly Listed Listings of Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!

Michael & Tina @ SDCC / CCI 2002!

We thought we should re-publish our shipping rates...  As we just received another email asking if we were increasing our rates. This due to the USPS changing their rates Monday, May 12th!

We decided NOT to change our rates for domestic shipping, and also have not changed our international shipping rates since January 18th 2009, when the USPS dramatically increased their rates to us.

SHIPPING COST TO USA Addresses:

SHIPPING COST FOR NON-CGC COMIC BOOKS:
This FLAT RATE Shipping is for NON-CGC graded comic books only!  (NO magazines, NO CGC encapsulated graded comics, and NO other non-comic items are included in this shipping special!)  We will continue to ship unlimited non-CGC graded comics to USA addresses only at the special $4.99 shipping! Whether you buy 1 or 3 or 10 or even more comics, the shipping rate for comic books is still $4.99! PLUS for the $4.99 you get FREE Delivery Receipt Confirmation for tracking your purchase(s)!

SHIPPING COST FOR MAGAZINES:
We also sell Magazines, but they are odd-sized and varied in number of pages so they cannot be sent via the 'unlimited shipping' rate, sorry!  We will combine shipping where we can, but please email us FIRST for combined shipping cost BEFORE you click to buy multiple magazines!

SHIPPING COST FOR CGC GRADED COMICS:
CGC graded comics come in plastic holders and are shipped only via a Priority BOX so as to protect the holders.  We can place 1 to 2 CGC graded comics in the Flat Rate Priority Box for $9.99 to USA addresses only!
-------------------------------
SHIPPING COST TO CANADA:

FLAT RATE Priority International Shipping is for NON-CGC graded comic books only!  We will ship 4 to 9 non-CGC graded comics to CANADIAN addresses only at the $12.95 shipping charge!  Sorry, no magazines and no CGC graded comics at this shipping rate!

However, If you want to buy JUST ONE NON-CGC comic, (no magazines, just a comic), then the shipping cost would be $4.99 for FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL, but  ONLY FOR
ONE SINGLE STANDARD SIZED COMIC BOOK.

For 2 to 3 standard sized comics... We can ship those comics (only non-CGC comics) for $6.99 USD!

PLEASE NOTE: We will ship up to 25 single standard sized non-slabbed comics in a Flat Rate Priority Box International to Canadian addresses. The shipping and handling charge for that is $28.95 USD.

For those in Canada that are interested in magazines, we can ship one in a Flate Rate Priority Mail Envelope for $12.95 USD. Possibly two magazines in a Flat Rate Envelope depending upon the magazine size and page counts.  Please email us first with which magazine(s) you are interested in as we do not list magazines for international shipping normally. The listings would have to each be revised to allow you to purchase them individually. We will be glad to do so after we communicate with you on the costs and how many would fit in the envelope!

For CGC Comics - We are now shipping them to Canadian addresses. On an individual buyer basis only. Please email us if you have interest in our CGC listings. The CGC encapsulated comics would have to be shipped via Priority International Flat Rate Box for the $28.95 USD Shipping Charge PLUS Insurance if over $25.00 value of the item. We can place from one to two CGC encapsulated comic(s) in each Flat Rate Box.
SHIPPING COST TO UNITED KINGDOM & AUSTRALIA:

FLAT RATE Priority International Shipping is for NON-CGC graded comic books only!  We will ship 1 to 9 non-CGC graded comics, (no magazines) to the UK or AU/NZ for $14.95 USD as that is what the Priority International Envelope will hold with cardboard insert for protection.

Magazines are not normally listed for shipping to the UK & Australia. However, we can ship them, but as explained in the section above for Canadian buyers, the sizes and page counts make those purchases more difficult to figure out shipping costs. Please email us so we can figure out what can be shipped to you and for what cost.

NOTE:  We will ship up to 25 single standard sized raw (non encapsulated CGC comics) in a flat rate priority mail box to the UK and Australia.  Our charge for this would be $45.95 USD at this time for the shipping.

For CGC Graded Comics - We are now shipping them to UK and Australian addresses. On an individual buyer basis only. Please email us if you have interest in our CGC listings. The CGC encapsulated comics would have to be shipped via Priority International Flat Rate Box for the $45.95 USD Shipping Charge PLUS Insurance if over $25.00 value of the item. We can place from one to two CGC encapsulated comic(s) in each Flat Rate Box.
SHIPPING COST TO OTHER COUNTRIES:

For other countries that are NOT listed above, we still may be able to ship to YOUR country! There are multiple reasons why we don't universally show that we ship to your country, but we encourage you to e-mail us with your question as to shipping charges for YOUR country!

They Are 'The Scrapyard Detectives'!

Click Here To See Our Newly Listed Listings of Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!

Bill Galvan, Co-Creator

As a collector / dealer / blogger...  I either buy / trade / or receive many publications and books during each month.  However I do miss seeing many of the new releases because of limited distribution of several of them at comic stores, or that they are self-published and not distributed via the usual channels.

One that I shouldn't have missed, but did, was 'The Scrapyard Detectives' comic book series.  The comics were distributed 'Free' to their targeted market, which would be 8 to 12 year olds.

I was in correspondence recently with Bill Galvan, who along with Chad Denton were the creators of this kid group comic series.  When I stated I had not seen this series before, The Diversity Foundation of South Jordan,  Utah, who is the publisher,  sent me review copies.

What I had missed so far were 4 comics, a mystery novel, and an ashcan edition of the comic series.  Who I had missed were the comic creators who worked on the series, including Bill Galvan, Chad Denton, Derek Hunter, George Gladir, Trevor Nielson, Quinn Johnson, JJ Harison, Nathan Shumate, JM DeMatteis, Batton Lash, and Rob Hawkins among others.

Well, now You don't have to miss this series for your kids!  The first three comics were collected in a TPB and are available for sale from your usual sources.  'The Scrapyard Detectives Collected Cases, Volum 1' is in print!

Here is the description of the TPB:

The Scrapyard Detectives are on the case! Join Robert, Jinn and Raymond as they solve the mysteries that affect their community, and learn valuable lessons about teamwork and diversity.

Collecting issues #1-3 of the ongoing all ages comic book series, this volume features three exciting stories. In 'The Case of the Missing Roses,' a new family from India moves into the neighborhood. It's up to the Scrapyard Detectives to find out who vandalized their garden- and why! In 'Patriot Dreams,' the new multi-cultural community center brings people from other backgrounds to the neighborhood, but someone sets it ablaze - with Jinn and Raymond inside! Will the detectives save themselves and solve the mystery in time?

In 'A Friend in Need,' the detectives split apart over multiple cases, one involving Raymond's friend, Ben Crenshaw, who's turning into a bully. With so many cases to solve, the Scrapyard Detectives have to work especially hard. But with so much prejudice, can they still work together as a team? Written by New York Times Bestselling author Jesse Leon McCann! Batton Lash also pens a special back up story- the origin of the Scrapyard Detectives. The introduction to the graphic novel is written by J.M. DeMatteis.

Being an adult, my POV of the series would be different from the targeted age group for this series. However, I found this series to be interesting, fun, entertaining and relevant.  All this, and with a 'message' to boot!  Yet not coming over 'preachy'.  Which is a hard balance to maintain when aiming for this targeted age group.

So if you also did not see this series when it was originally printed and distributed, or if your child saw one of the stories, but not the rest, here is your chance for a 'collected' series while it is still in print.  I enjoyed the artwork and the storylines.  I would believe your child could too!

Jeff Mariotte Signing My Copy Of His Desperadoes Omnibus!

Tina and I had a Great Time... At the 16th Birthday Party for the independent book store 'Mysterious Galaxy' on Saturday, May 9th 2009 in San Diego, California!

While there we checked out what books would be of interest to Tina, and what graphic novels or comics TPBs would interest Michael.

One item I immediately knew that I wanted to read was the compilation into TPB format of Jeff Mariotte's Desperadoes comic book series, all five series of them!  Plus it was an opportunity to have Jeff sign the book as he was a featured author speaker that day!

I had read a couple of issues of his third Desperadoes series, 'Quiet Of The Grave', because it was part of a western collection we had purchased recently.  What really grabbed my eyes was that the art was by John Severin, whose work I have admired for years!  So this was my introduction to the series that Jeff plus his array of artists had created since 1997 to 2007.

My first thought on holding the TPB, (Trade Paper Back compilation), was that it was awful heavy!  And it was a great value too!  Cover Priced at only $24.99!   With almost 500 pages of story and art!   So with all five published series to be read in one volume, I was itching to start reading it after having Jeff sign my copy that day!

Click Here to our Crime Comics, graphic novels and books!  'A Moment’s Sunlight' - The first series was printed in 1997 by Image Comics.   This series was written by Jeff with pencils and inks drawn by John Cassady who was just making a name for himself at that time.  Here is where the series started with a supernatural bent in a western genre.   A one line sentence on what the book is about:  "the hard-riding heroes first meet while tracking a ritualistic murderer whose crimes gave him supernatural powers".  If I had started here, instead of the third series which drew me in because of John Severin's art... I may have stopped here because yeah, I am a little squeamish.  This is a weird / eerie yarn that brings the four 'Desperadoes' together as they track down a frontier serial killer.  The only problem with this series for me is how the dead children are dealt with graphically in the artwork.  This is definitely not a Code approved comic book series.  However the storyline is well written and the intro to the main characters and their first adventure made me want to ride along to their next one.

Click Here to see our Sci-Fi, Sword and Sorcery comics and graphic novels!  'Epidemic' - Was the second story, and this is when the creator owned comic moved from Image Comics to Homage Comics, a DC Comics imprint. A one line sentence on what this story was about:  The Desperadoes "experience quarantine in a haunted town". This tale was also illustrated by John Cassaday, with additional artwork done by John Lucas.   Once again the storyline was a good read, with a supernatural bent, and the continuation with the same artist was a good choice.

Click Here to see our CLASSICS comics and graphic novels!  'The Quiet of the Grave' - Published in 2001.  A one line sentence on what this story was about:  The Desperadoes meet "a reanimated dead boy with a thirst for revenge".  As stated above, this was the first comics I had read of the series, although I didn't have the complete story.   John Severin worked at EC Comics years ago, and knew how to present HoRRoR and supernatural 'tastefully' then as well as now.  For a storyline that was based on a back-from-the-dead tale of revenge the artwork here fully complemented the script and dialogue.  I don't think this tale could have been completed any better than what is shown here.  Again, I do have my prejudices toward John Severin's art, but it was a nice change of pace after the first two series.

Click Here to our SIGNED Comics, graphic novels and books!  'Banners of Gold' - Was the fourth of the series.  A one line sentence on what this story was about:  The Desperadoes come face to face with "a spiritualist's nightmare".  Here there was a change in artists again.  This series was illustrated by Jeremy Haun who was far different in style from John Severin.   Severin's backgrounds were very detailed, wheras Haun's backgrounds were a lot looser.  Nothing wrong with Haun's artwork, just that it was more of a episodic storyboard similar to what is drawn for a feature film.  Which I actually enjoyed!  Just that after Severin's detailed artwork, this was a little bit of a shock. If read separately like it was first published in 2004, it would have stood nicely on its' own.  Once again Jeff's storyline was an interesting tale blending The Old West with a supernatural mysticism bent.

Click Here to our CGC GRADED Comics, graphic novels and books!  'Buffalo Dreams' - Was the 5th and final series compiled into this Omnibus.  A one line sentence on what this story was about: The Desperadoes go on a "bizarre quest to the birthplace of the buffalo on behalf of Geronimo himself".  It was first published in 2007.  Again we have an artist change, this time the series is illustrated by Alberto Dose.  I had mentioned that we had gone from detailed backgrounds with Severin, to more of a storyboarding style with Hauns.  Now it seemed that the art went back to more detail, and actually a bit too much detail at times.   This dramatic change would only be noticed because it was included in an Omnibus format.  As a separate series, standing alone, the artwork complemented the strange storyline very well.   I enjoyed the adventure, script and dialogue.   This series ended the 5 series Omnibus very well.

This Omnibus presents separate adventures compiled into one volume.  Due to the change in artwork in the last three series, it would be best to read those separately and stop for a while before reading the next series, IMHO.

There is great reading value in this Omnibus.  I am truly surprised at the low cost of obtaining this book at only $24.99, whereas picking up each of the series in their earlier TBP format would have run at least $17.99 each.

Paperback: 492 pages
Publisher: IDW Publishing (April 8, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1600103804
ISBN-13: 978-1600103803
Product Dimensions: 9 x 5.8 x 1.1 inches
Shipping Weight: 2.4 pounds

I must also say that I am a 'Facebook Friend' of Jeff Mariotte, altho he and I had not met in person until the Birthday Celebration at the Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore!   I don't believe that being FB Friends with Jeff unduly influenced my personal opinion in the above reviews of the stories compiled into this Omnibus!

In closing... Tina or I blog daily on comics and pop culture news and events.  Check out our daily blog posts, and new listings of comics, graphic novels, Comic Con exclusives and more pop culture items for sale in our online Store

DUAL - The Online Graphic Novel

By Michael Walton

I came in at the end of this online graphic novel's first season... after the creator and I became Facebook Friends.  As I do with most invitations to join the new friend's fan page or group page, I did so in this instance.

Shortly afterwards I received the following message sent to all the members of the 'Dual' Fan Page from Michael Walton:

Click Here To See Our Newly Listed Listings of Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!   Friends:

Dual’s first season has drawn to a close this week with the posting of screen 60. These first 60 screens are the set up for a larger story I hope to tell.

If you have not yet checked out the supernatural, action, dramedy that is Dual, please head on over to Zuda to take a peek:  http://www.zudacomics.com/dual

If you have enjoyed Dual (or you might be able to pretend you enjoyed reading Dual), please take a moment to let Zuda know you’d like to see the story continue. Go to : http://www.zudacomics.com/dual

Up near the top of the page, sandwiched between the “FAQs” and “Message Boards” is the “Feedback” link. Click on that little ol’ “Feedback” link and it will take you to a new page which offers you the opportunity to tell the powers-that-be at Zuda how important it is for Dual to continue.

I am very passionate about this project and I appreciate your help.

Thanks for your support.

Mike!

Okay, Now that we have seen what Michael (Mike) Walton wrote to all of his Fan Page members, I realize that most of you haven't seen this project yet. So what is it about?

Well, in the creator's own words... "At age ten, Bill Jensen and his “imaginary” friend, Yasu, inadvertently unleash a devastating power that kills three schoolmates.

A decade later, Bill wrestles with making his way in the world while dealing with the inner turmoil of determining whether Yasu is devil or delusion. Still haunted by the confusing events of their childhood, Bill and Yasu struggle to recognize their extraordinary power and purpose.

Bill’s secret power mysteriously begins to attract the interest of bizarre creatures, including a bulimic werewolf and a man claiming to be an ancient soul-eating dragon. The power’s pull might also be contributing to Bill’s turbulent romance with an unstable witch, named Corina, and luring the attention of a psychotic serial killer.

New aspects of the power begin to manifest just in time to help Bill and Yasu deal with escalating threats, which send the companions spiraling toward an uncertain destiny-- heroic salvation or evil oblivion?"

Okay, so this isn't the normal fare that I usually read, or blog about.  However the storyline in this graphic novel kept me reading until the final page of 'Season One'.

Is it worth mentioning in my Blog?  Yes.  Is it worth continuing?  That would be up to you and the others that find this online graphic novel at zudacomics and indicate there if you think so.  Because you see, Zudacomics.com is a competition of sorts.

As of this blog's posting, the graphic novel's 'Final Rank' was #1 in the competition.  It has had 157,062 page views, and 823 different persons had signed up with Zuda to be able to 'favorite' this entry.

Is this graphic novel 'outside the box' in its' presentation? Yes it is.  Is the subject matter a little outrageous? Yes it is.  Is this graphic novel the creator's dream project?  Yes it is, because Michael is both the writer and the artist for this graphic novel.

Does this have a chance of making it to publication?  Well, for those of you that don't know, zudacomics.com is now owned by DC Comics, so that should tell you something about the possiblity of this happening, but it is up to the fans of this project to let zudacomics know...

The way I understand Zuda is the following:  Dual won Zuda's June 2008 initial entry competition.  Then each month ten selected submissions compete on Zuda for a 60 screen contract. Zuda users vote for the winning titles.
After the first 60 screens, user feedback helps determine if the title will be renewed.

Michael Walton does have more to do to complete this series, including a cover for it, should it see print.  There is a base of over 700 Facebook Friends for this project over on its' Facebook Fan Page.

After reading the 60 screens graphic novel as it currently is seen online, and you are interested in seeing and hearing more about it, then Michael Walton invites you to also join his Facebook Fan Page for Dual at:

Please Note:  The Dual Graphic Novel is not for kids, and contains subject matter that is probably not agreeable for all readers. It is presented here for those that are 'into' that type of story or supernatural genre and is told in a more graphic illustrated format.
