TODAY'S FEATURE:

I've been in contact quite a bit with Allen Bellman recently, ever since we've become Facebook Friends...

That's because he is a wealth of information on the early comics industry. Before I post where he will be headlined at, let me tell you just a little of what he has done in the World of Comics:

First I'm going to post a couple of links.

Here's the known credits for Allen Bellman's pencils in comics:

http://www.comics.org/penciller/name/allen%20bellman/sort/alpha/

Here's the known credits for Allen Bellman's inks in comics:

http://www.comics.org/inker/name/allen%20bellman/sort/alpha/

Okay... hopefully you are back now?!  Because if you are like me, you took a look at several of those credits while you were on those links!

Oh, and there are more credits that should be entered, but for those of you that don't know, 'credits' were not published usually during the Golden Age Of Comics!  So it is really good that today we have the Grand Comics Database to look at for info.  If you appreciate this resource, why don't you stop at their home page at: http://www.comics.org and click the 'Donate Button'?!

Okay, end of 'semi-commercial' for the GCD!

Back to Allen Bellman's Bio.  The following is from the 'Allen Bellman Fan Group' started by Jeff McLaughlin on Facebook:

"Allen Bellman was born in Manhattan and studied at the High School of Industrial Arts. He eventually became a staff artist at Timely during the Golden Age of comics. While still a teenager, he did the backgrounds for Syd Shores' Captain America in 1942, and eventually worked on titles such as: The Patriot, The Destroyer, The Human Torch, Jap Buster Johnson and Jet Dixon of the Space Squadron, All Winners Comics, Marvel Mystery, Sub Mariner Comics, Young Allies and so much more.

His self-created back-up crime feature Let's Play Detective. He also contributed to pre-Code horror, crime, war and western tales for Atlas. He worked in the comics field until the early 1950s.

After the publishing business Allen became a successful businessman, and after 18 years he moved down here to South Florida where he joined the art department of a major daily newspaper, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel. After that he went into photography. He won many nationwide photography contests, winning out more than 20,000 entries. Photography is the way he now creates. Hundreds of his photos have appeared in hardcover books, have been on exhibit in museums in Florida and received great reviews in numerous newspapers. He still attends comic books shows, and is still available for commissions. In one of his most recent interviews in the Miami Herald, he was described as an artist who now paints with his camera."

Here is a link to the Facebook Group Page so that YOU can join:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=231065759127

Okay, so now YOU know who Allen Bellman is, some of what he's penciled and inked, and what he has been doing since he left the field of comic books.

Here's where it gets even better!

You can see him headline the upcoming Cosmic Comic Connection at the Orange County Regional History Center in Orlando, Florida on April 10th of 2010!

For more information on the hours and the cost to see Allen PLUS the rest of the Center, here is the link to the landing page for that event:

http://www.thehistorycenter.org/node/172

Please Note:  Even though the Center has a Facebook Fan Page, they have Not posted an event page for this Cosmic Comic Connection as of this blog's posting time...

Here is the link to the Center's Facebook Fan Page so you can see what else they have there: Orange County Regional History Center

Note from Michael:  I want to add the following that Allen sent me after the passing of another comics great:

"The comic book industry just lost an icon and legend, I speak of Dick Giodano, a great artist and above all all gentleman. He wa supposed to appear with me at a one day comic book event in Orlando on April 10th, he will be missed. Dick and I have appeared in many comic book conventions and usually our tables were side ...by side. I wonder if they publish comic books in Heaven."

For those that missed my memorial blog to Dick Giordano, you can read by clicking this link.

Again, my thanks to Allen Bellman for informing me of this upcoming event!  Plus thanks to Paul who is associated with the Center, for guiding me over the phone as to where the event was posted online so I could tell my blog readers!

AND...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now almost at the 3,100 total posts in number!!

TODAY'S FEATURE:

This is a review on 'SHELTER' - A Trees & Hills Anthology...

Matt Levin, about whom I blogged about HERE, sent me this publication for possible mention / review in my Blog.

So, what's this publication about? I grabbed this excerpt from the Trees and Hills Comics Group Web Site:!

5.5" x 8.5", 56 pgs. Following on from SEEDS, we present another anthology of comics about a basic need: SHELTER. From personal meanings of home, to foreclosures, to cooperatively-owned trailer parks, and beyond, this is a collection for any home. 25% of all proceeds from SHELTER go to local shelter organizations.

So again, the above shows that this is also a different type of publication.

So, was this also a FUN READ like 'SEEDS' was? (Click here for my review blog on SEEDS.)

Well, this publication reminded more of the 'Underground Comix' that I've read in the past.  Which always has its' fans and those that don't quite 'get' it.  Again, this is an anthology publication, so this is a mixture of story telling and artwork.

Some of the features in this issue that really jumped out at me were:

A Boy And His Robot by Jesse Durona

Houses & Stuff by Tom Pappalardo

Three Stories by Matt Young

I Set You Free by Marek Bennett

Home by Daniel Barlow and Colin Tedford

Gimmie Shelter by Matt Levin

Nebulous Prime by Bob Oxman & Cayetano Garza

As with 'SEEDS', this is definitely a 'message' publication.  Wether or not you 'get the message' or even care for the 'message', this publication has entertainment value in it as well as educational info.  I for one enjoyed seeing what these creators did with their features that were presented in this publication.

For more info on this publication and others that Trees & Hills sells, please see their web site at:

http://www.treesandhills.org/

My thanks to Matt Levin for bringing this publication to my attention. Plus, my thanks to Daniel William Barlow for additional information on the group and his photo to run with this blog post!

TONIGHT'S FEATURE:

Tonight’s Special Guest Blog is by Make It So Marketing President, Tina Lo Sasso, who explains how an online book launch works and some tips for making it successful.  Great advice for comic book creators looking to make a splash in their arena!

She sent me the following:

"The Anatomy of a Successful Book Launch

Our latest client, Art Sobczak, launched his new book, Smart Calling, with an online book launch today. It’s already hit #1 in his category of Sales and Selling. Many of Michael’s friends in the comic book industry have asked me how we make this happen.   Here’s how an online book launch works:

Today, dozens of Art’s fellow sales trainers and friends are emailing their readers (over one million business people!) to recommend that they buy his book. We wrote the email message for them to use. The email contains a link to the book’s landing page, which we also wrote the copy for. Check it out here: https://bbp.infusionsoft.com/go/sc/MakeItSo/

You’ll notice the landing page has several key elements: a strong visual image in the header, compelling marketing copy, a funny video, clear directions to buy (Step 1 and Step 2), endorsements of the book, and a bunch of terrific bonuses that book buyers will receive when they buy.  When you’re getting hundreds of dollars worth of gifts just for buying a $15 book, it’s a no-brainer!

Where did all the bonus gifts come from?  Art’s fellow sales trainers were happy to supply them so they would be seen on the landing page by the people buying the book.

There are several lessons here for comic book creators and publishers:

1. Create a fun launch event online to generate interest in your publication
2. Give people a compelling reason to buy!
3. Call on your fellow creators to get the word out -- and, give them something in return.
4. Don’t do it all yourself. Art hired Make It So Marketing to manage his launch. While he ran his business, conducted several training seminars, published his weekly newsletter, and everything else he normally does, we managed all the details from securing his partners to testing the landing page.

If you’d like to explore how an online launch could work for you, email me at tina@MarketingTina.com "

Thanks Tina for taking the time tonight to send the above information for this guest blog post!

TODAY'S FEATURE:

I've just become Facebook Friends with William Brent, who invited me to stop by his table at the upcoming 2010 Wonder Con in San Francisco...

He told me the following:

"I will be at Wonder Con next weekend at artists alley table AA57, displaying some of my newest art & selling prints of old & new illustrations."

I asked him what publications he would have at his table, as I saw a little of what he had in the above two published photos from the 2009 Wonder Con.  He said:

"No publications, but do still sell some of my Rock posters. I have a Max Rebo Band poster I did for Lucas that I always bring to the comic shows. I think that's behind me in my photos."

So I asked him a little about his background and what he was was doing now.  His reply:

"In the late 80's till around 2001, I worked for Bill Graham's Winterland Productions, designing posters, shirts, all manner of rock & roll & movie merchandising. I've done concept art & storyboarding for CGI animation projects, as well as texture mapping. A lot of different things. Right now I'm designing pin-up girls for Las Vegas Hotels & Casinos."

I then saw this brief bio on his Facebook Wall also:

"I grew up in Los Angeles & started drawaing & painting at about 11 years old. Spent my early school days being a jock. Then came Rock & Roll High school."

"I've been doing R&R Posters,T-shirts, album covers, & CGI animation work for about 25 years now."

Thanks William for the quick replies to my questions!

For those of you that are interested in seeing William and the hundreds of others that will be exhibiting at the upcoming Wonder Con, here is the info that you would need:

TODAY'S FEATURE:

Today we have a Guest Blogger, Vinnie, who is blogging his review on the 'PONYO' Film on DVD. Take it away, Vinnie!

Ponyo DVD

"Ponyo is a little goldfish who was found by a boy name Sosuke, age 5. When they become friends, she wants to become a human because it would be hard to be friends with a human, if you were a fish. Being the daughter of the King of the Ocean makes her different from any other goldfish; she has the magic of the sea at her use. Soon through their friendship, she gets determined  to become a human. Becoming a little girl, ponyo returns to Sosuke's home. With having a magical fish princess out on dry land, the earth becomes unbalanced, causing the moon to come closer to earth making the oceans incredibly high.

The parts I found interesting were the parts where it was making you think, as with in the beginning how Ponyo got caught in a jar while she was dodging other garbage and debris being shuffled up. And also the parts where it would make you dream, as with the water turning to fish, and with Ponyo becoming human.

There were hardly any parts that I disliked, except for when I felt there were too many things going on  at a time that you couldn't focus on everything, later causing confusion. If you could connect the dots on those parts though, you would understand it.

This is very much so a great movie with enough things going on to keep you entertained. It would be enjoyed by all ages, as most Disney movies are, but there was one part that was thrown in that was more adult appropriate. Overall, it was pretty good, and well done."

My thanks to Vinnie for watching the DVD with us, outlining the film, and then blogging about it!

For those of you that read the above review, I just wanted you to know that although we don't have the DVD for sale in our online store, we do have the Comic-Con Edition of the'Animation Magazine' as pictured to the top left of this blog.  Just click on the magazine to be taken to our store, where we have several copies of this issue for sale.

Please Note:  Although the issue itself does Not have an article on Ponyo inside, the cover itself is suitable for framing as a momento of the film!
