TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3329:

I received the 6th and Final issue of the series: The Killer: Modus Vivendi from Archaia Entertainment in the mail recently.

Which was great, because I've been reading this series since issue #3 and been blogging about it. (See my posts for #3 & #4 - #5.

The following is what Archaia provides as the promo blurb:

In the final chapter of THE KILLER: MODUS VIVENDI, political tensions are on the rise as nations seek to claim the rich oil deposit discovered in Cuban waters. Amid the swelling political climate, the Killer lends Mariano a helping hand, dispatching a group of drug-dealing Hell's Angels who've crossed Mariano and his boss in a nasty way.  Despite the distraction, the Killer knows a silent war is beginning between nations.  How long will he be able to avoid being drafted into the conflict? Time may be running out faster than the Killer thinks.

So what is 'My Take' on this sixth and Final issue of the series?

The storyline that was revealed in this issue continued to interest me.  This has been a well written series since I first started reading it in issue #3.

As mentioned in my earlier blogs, I don't normally start reading limited or mini series that have already started... Something about coming in after the film has already started in a theater!

However, I made an exception for this series, because the artwork was rather unique and grabbed my attention right away!  The darker colors used in this series definitely added to the tone of this series.

Issue #6 gave me the finale, the 'punch line' if you will, to have made reading this series worthwhile!

But then on the final panel of this 6th & Final issue... I find a 'To be continued in The Killer Volume Four' text blurb.  Wait a minute... Volume Four?  I already knew there had been an earlier series of 'The Killer', (which I haven't read), but now it seemed there was another volume where the story would be continued?

That didn't set right with me... Yes, I would like to read another volume of 'The Killer', but didn't this say Issue #6 of 6?

This is the only thing that didn't set right with me after reading this far.  I realize that this series is being translated from a foreign language series in some format, but still...

Other than that final panel, I found this series to be a satisifying read.  The translation into English was very readable, the artwork different enough to make this genre of story more than readable, and the colors kept this series going smoothly on eight cyclinders throughout the series.

I'm only going to 'downgrade' this issue half a grade, because of the fact that 'the story' is 'to be continued', which I wasn't expecting to see in the final panel of a 'final issue'.  I'm not knocking this issue per se, just the fact that as a reader, I'm told in the last panel: 'To Be Continued' in another volume.

However, since this series does NOT have any ad pages, then I'm thinking where would the translators / editor of this series have placed the fact that there is another volume that continues the adventures of 'The Killer' from this point in time.

Plus I'm not aware of what sort of format this was originally published in.  So this may have been the best point in time to stop the complete storyline, and start a new volume.

To give credit... The storyline presented in issue #1 of this series does wrap up with issue #6, so a 'complete' story is presented in this series.  So maybe I'm being a little 'picky' here, so which is why I still think this series (or volume) itself is worthwhile for YOU to pick up and read in its entirety.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3328:

I've been asked why I haven't blogged about the ABC series, 'No Ordinary Family', because after all... Isn't it a 'superhero' show?

Well, beore the WGA Strike interferred with that year's TV Season back in 2007-08, I was blogging about a LOT of TV shows, 'superheroes' based or not!

Now I just blog about those shows that have a definite 'comic book' history, like 'Human Target', or have a comic book promotional item to draw in the viewing audience, like 'The Cape'.

I saw parts of both 'The Cape' and 'No Ordinary Family' panels at the 2010 Comic-Con International: San Diego (a.k.a. SDCC). 'No Ordinary Family' was at 3:15 - 4:15 on Saturday the 24th.

The main reason that I wanted to see 'No Ordinary Family' was because Michael Chiklis was starring in this TV Show.

I've liked watching Michael Chiklis portray 'The Thing' in the two Fantastic Four theatrical films. Those were a 'perfect portrayal' of both Ben Grimm and 'The Thing', IMO.

I also like Michael's portryal as 'Jim Powell' in this TV series.

However, after realizing that I was watching the 13th episode of this series, I had to wonder why the series wasn't 'clicking' for me?!

I asked Tina, (my wife), who was watching with me, (and checking her Droid), what she thought of this series.

Her reply: "I don't feel compelled to watch this".  She followed up with: "It's not bad, but... It's like a mayonaise sandwich".

Which brought me back to reality, right during the commercial break.

Yes, there are comic book references in this series, like tonight's reference to 'Kitty Pryde' from the X-Men.

But 13 episodes into this series, neither Tina nor I can fully name the main characters names in the series, let alone their 'real names'.

Tina and I both started asking each other questions about the show and Tina stated further... "It's a very bland show, very predictable".  She also added: "You can be 'cute' and be a family oriented show, yet have an action packed entertaining show".

Tina ended with the fact that we both love 'EUReKA' and 'Warehouse 13', which was ironic, because Joanne Kelly, who plays 'Myka' in Warehouse 13, was the guest star in this 13th episode of 'No Ordinary Family'!

The super-powers that the four family members obtained in this show are not overpowering which is good, and are actually relatively realistic. Yet the show seems a little 'disjointed' to me, when watching each family member do their own thing with the powers in individual scenes.  There seems to be 'no direction' in their discovering their powers and what they could do with them.

Additionally, Stephen Collin's role as Dr. Dayton King, Stephanie's boss at Global Tech, wasn't even seen in the episode by 8:51 PM, nor did he show up in the remaining minutes or in the preview of next week's episode.  He is supposed to be the main 'bad guy' of this series, but is under utilized..  And I like Stephen Collins as an actor.  And Julie Benz was fine in 'Roswell' and 'Desperate Housewives'.

There are moments or scenes that 'work' for me in this series, like the ending scene of the 13th episode. Jim asks: 'You guys remember 'Die Hard'?  I lived it!", but unfortunately not enough of them for me to rave on about this show.

The series has been picked up for a full season, per news on October 25th.  I know that I'll continue to watch, but I also know that when 'Glee' returns to Fox, Tina will want to watch that show 'live' and tape 'No Ordinary Family' to watch later with me.

We both think that the writing of this series is what is keeping us from liking it more.  Plus the cast of the show doesn't seem to 'jell' for us.  So after 13 episodes into the 'full season', we just don't have the 'immediacy' to watch it live, unless 'Glee' is on season break like it has been.

Unfortunately I have to give this series a 'Comic Book Grade' of FINE (F) 6.0 out of a possible 10.0 grading scale... Which is a shame, because this show had better potential when it was first previewed at the 2010 SDCC... I'm hoping that this show can turn it around in time to be renewed for the next season.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3327:

I met Elizabeth Watasin for the first time at the 2010 Long Beach Comic Con (LBCC) held during Halloween Weekend, even though we had been 'Facebook Friends' since May of 2010.

I published a photo of Elizabeth on my Facebook pages later after meeting her, and another Facebook Friend of mine, Matt Levin, asked if I published 'guest blogs', which I will do if asked!

Here's Matt's 'guest blog':

Michael Hamersky’s blog-photo of Elizabeth Watasin, her book, Charm School in hand, sent me looking for the nine issues I’ve had from long ago, which I read again, and liked again, and want to call more attention to.

A black-and-white comic from the best of the good old black-and-white days, published by Slave Labor Graphics, issue one appeared as of April 2000. The story’s about “The Witch,” “The Vampire,” and “The Faerie”—Bunny, Dean, and Fairer Than. Bunny and Dean are in love; Fairer Than is more than Faerie, part dragon, and wants Bunny’s love as her own. Dean is set for the drag race of her life and then to take on Fairer Than.

It’s fun. The characters are left to reveal themselves gradually, as is the multi-“monster” world they live in (Dean’s chief dragsters competition are the werewolf boys).

It’s elegant to look at. Watasin’s sense of layouts creates nicely framed pages, and balances black and white spaces skillfully.

Her faces are individual and emotional, are charming. Her dialogue’s natural and in fact is at times exciting. You can read it for yourself at Elizabeth Watasin’s Charm School website-- read issues 2-8 at Elizabeth Watasin's Charm School.

Her site says she’s working on issue 10. CS Vol. 1, (as pictured in the blog-photo), republishes Charm School #1, 2, 3, a complete story arc, 'The Wrecking Fairie'.

Elizabeth reports that “Charm School” is on the backburner until she can figure out how to best bring the conclusion to the last story arc and any possible future CS stories to her readers.

Matt Levin
Walking Man Comics

-----------------

Matt's works can be found at his Facebook Profile Page, via this link. You should be able to view them, even if you aren't a Facebook Friend of his.  If not, then send him a message!

I, (Michael), have blogged about several of Matt's works, either his Walking Man series, or his contributions to anthologies from the Trees and Hills Comics Distro publishing group.

A 'current' listing of the links where this Blog has mentioned Matt and his works can be found here.  Currently there are about 219 results, where the blogs have been picked up by others!

My thanks to Matt for submitting the above 'guest blog'.  I had been thinking about blogging a review blog on 'Charm School' or 'Action Girl' or 'Carnival Anthology' after reading them, but decided that after reading Matt's great reveiw blog, that I should run a special 'Spotlight On...' blog on Elizabeth instead!

A few of Elizabeth's works can be found in this Grand Comics Database link, but it needs to be updated for sure!

(Side Note from Michael: Since the GCD is done on a volunteer basis, several works are not included until the volunteers index the works or submit the covers to the publications.  It is always a good thing if you are a comics creator to be sure to either do it yourself, or bring this to the attention of those at the GCD.  I see this reference base as one of the top used references for comics, if not THE main reference base!)

I want to thank Elizabeth for introducing herself to me in person at the 2010 LBCC.  She was with Sandra Chang-Adair in Artist Alley, and noticed my coming by that section looking for possible topics for this Blog.  I appreciate her introducing me to her previous works, and look forward to seeing her upcoming creations as well.

Matt has already provided a link to her 'Charm School' web site, but I'll repost it here: Elizabeth Watasin's Charm School.

I don't see a Facebook Fan Page for her works yet, so I'll show the following additional links for her, Elizabeth's DeviantArt page, and her animated work in film, of which I wasn't totally aware of! Elizabeth's works via the IMDb. As you will see there, Elizabeth has been involved in some really Big 'mainstream' animated films! Add that to her works in the printed sequential art field, and she's a real 'power house' and someone YOU should get to know!

If you see her at a comic-con, stop and say hello! If you don't get to many comic cons and want to see the 'Charm School - Book One' shown above in a published printed format, the link here will provide you with the means to do so:   Charm School Book One: Magical Witch Girl Bunny (v. 1)

----------------

The above was my 'Spotlight On... Elizabeth Watasin', (with a BIG assist from Matt Levin!), one of several 'Spotlight On' blogs I've done over the years...

Matter of fact, YOU can check out the 'Spotlight On...' blogs by clicking this link where there are over 929 different links served up by Google!

There aren't THAT many individual posts, but the blogs have been picked up and re-posted by many others, including the person 'Spotlighted' at this Blog!

Some of those include (but not limited to): Ray Anthony-HeightPhil OrtizBruce Durham, Scott Shaw!, James Pinard, Elisa Feliz, Amanda Stevens, Tonya Kay, Bryan Reesman, Robert Roach, Christian Meesey a.k.a. Messimo, Erik Andresen, Jeff Balkeand Joe Pepitone a.k.a. JoepeP.

--------------

My thanks again to Elizabeth Watasin for her time at the 2010 Long Beach Comic Con, her giving me a few of her previous works, which she does have for sale at comic cons that she exhibits at!

The comic book shown above was published in 1956 by The Fellowship of Reconciliation. To my knowledge that is the oldest comic book with MLK on the cover.
-
This comic book had an English printing of 250,000 copies, and a Spanish version of 125,000 copies. They were used for teaching tools about the civil rights movement.

The graphic novel shown near the bottom right of this post is 'King' by Ho Che Anderson.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3326:

Today, January 17th of 2011, marks the 25th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday.

The Day was also designated as a 'national day of volunteer service' by Congress in 1994, which I'm sure not too many Americans are aware of.

However, many Americans do honor the civil rights leader's legacy by engaging in volunteer services.

If YOU don't know how or where to volunteer your services today, or later on this week, you could check out this Facebook Fan Page: Create The Good!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3325:

Tina and I have been fighting these bad colds we picked up in Las Vegas over the Holidays Vacation that we took.

However, my youngest son, Vinnie, was visiting us this weekend, and he expressed his desire to see the Green Hornet film that came out on this past Friday.

Well... Since I was interested in seeing what the 2011 Black Beauty would do in the film... We took in an afternoon matinee yesterday.

Here are 'Our Takes' (reviews) on the film.

Please Note:  SPOILER WARNINGS AHEAD!

First: Tina's 'Take':

(From a mainstream movie goer with recent comics knowledge through exposure the past nine years of being married to a comics geek)

The Green Hornet movie is similiar to the 1960's tv series in one sense: Kato and The Black Beauty are, again, the entertainment highlights.

I went into the movie with low expectations. Michael has been ragging on the casting for over a year. And after being dragged to The (not so) Incredible Hulk (Ang Lee version), I was reluctant to see another "green" comic book movie. I'm glad to say I wasn't expecting much and I wasn't disappointed.

Highlights for me:

Kato, Jay Chou as Kato, Kato beating the crap out of Britt Reid

All the Black Beauties

The soundtrack lifted otherwise boring scenes...loved hearing Gangsta Paradise and seeing Rogen cut short

Hearing the Flight of the Bumblebee theme from the original tv show and seeing the swirling hornet (Credits at the end of the film)

The silly, implausible, action vs. the typical CGI action found in most comic book movies

Lowlights:

Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen's "comedic" dialogue

The slew of underdeveloped supporting characters

(did I mention?) Seth Rogen as Britt Reid

In the original tv series, Bruce Lee as Kato had me and my brothers running around the house karate-chopping and kicking each other. This movie update will be lucky to inspire anyone to buy a ticket.

Grade: FINE PLUS (F+) 6.5 Out of a 10.0 Possible Comic Book Grading Scale.

Vinnie's 'Take':

(From a tween's POV)

We just came out of a mid-afternoon viewing of "The Green Hornet," and these are my thoughts on it.

When reading this, you should know that I have not had much prior knowledge of the Green Hornet. The only knowledge of it I have is from the few episodes I have seen with my father. These were from the 1967 Green Hornet TV series starring Van Williams and Bruce Lee.

What I liked about this movie was the humor and the action.

I will admit that most of this humor was adult orientated, but I still found it funny. I also found it funny that the Green Hornet was kicking or hitting enemies that Kato knocked out or killed already, and he would exclaim sbout how awesome he did, although in reality, he did little to nothing.

My favorite parts about the action were mainly the fight scenes, but a few of the chases I enjoyed as well. What made me most enjoy the fight scenes was when Kato was fighting, and time "slowed." It didn't actually slow, but he felt it did as he concentrated. During this time, he was able to identify any weapons, and he easily manuevuered himself to react to anything the opponents did. It was as if he was "in the zone," you could say. Besides that, he was just awesome.

I can honestly say that there was nothing I didn't like in this movie. I loved the filming, casting, and even the songs used, although some may argure they weren't the best.

Although the rating is PG-13, I don't think I would recommend this to someone under at least 15. There was just a lot of adult humor, strong language, most of which was for no reason or purpose, and quite a bit of violence and blood. You wouldn't even have to to be a "hardcore" Green Hornet fan to enjoy this movie; just some interest in action films and you would enjoy this.

As you can see that I am overly thrilled by this movie, it shouldn't be a surprise that I am giving this movie, "The Green Hornet," a NEAR MINT (NM) a 9.4 out of a 10.0 possible comic book grade scale.

Michael's Take:

Well... I've hinted in this Blog a few times that I would love to see the 'Black Beauty' in action in this film.  Especially after being up close to it back at the Comic-Con International: San Diego way back in 2009!  Yeah, THAT long ago!

Sheesh!  (See the two pics at the bottom right of this blog post for pics of Tina and myself in front of the Black Beauty at that 2009 SDCC!)

So, when my youngest son expressed his desire to see this film, I talked Tina into viewing it today at a mid-afternoon Saturday Matinee. As we are both still sick from a really bad cold we both caught in Las Vegas... Well, I thought it would be better to attend an earlier showing, without coughing and hacking away, interferring with the film.

Well... I was definitely pleased with the 'Black Beauty' in this film!  Or should I say 'Black Beauties'!  As there were at least three of them in the Reid Garage at the mansion.

The 'Black Beauty' was the highlight of the film for me.  It was really cool to see it in action!  And I'm NOT that much of an auto freak!

Kato, played by Jay Chou, came across really well in the film.

Britt Reid, a.k.a. The Green Hornet, played by Seth Rogen, was defintely NOT 'My' Green Hornet!  Van Williams will stay that for me!

Lenore Case, 'Casey', played by Cameron Diaz, was both 'Hot' and 'brainy'.  She just didn't see enough 'air time' IMO.

Christoph Waltz as Benjamin Chudnofsky, the villain, actually did pretty darn good in this film.  Although the film was played for ;laughs', he actually rolled with the drama / comedy / action scenes.

David Harbour as D.A. Frank Scanlon... Well, it's NOT his fault that the film re-wrote his role that I 'knew' him as in the 1967 TV Series...

There was a 'nod' to the TV Series... Edward James Olmos played Mike Axford...

Tom Wilkinson as James Reid, Britt's wealthy father and successful newspaper publisher was a 'new' bit for me... But vital to the storyline.

Yet even with all of the above characters, and a lot more included, the overall film for me had a LOT of ups and downs.

Maybe I'm getting a little older... But I'm really starting to get annoyed with younger creators taking time honored and revered characters of yesterday and 'playing' with them, 'updating' them, and siccing them onto today's younger audiences as being 'THE' character.

We stayed till the very end of the credits, so yeah, I did see that this film was 'based' on the Green Hornet 'radio series', not the 'film serials' of before my time even, and definitely not the 'TV Series' of 1967.

Yet, that is what caused me to even want to see this film in the first place.  Especially after seeing the 'souped up' Black Beauty at the July 2009 San Diego Comic Con!

To wait this long... (Read the Wikipedia entry for the Green Hornet film here as to why...!) And then end up with this uneven film... Well, I'm surprised myself as to the comic book grade I'm going to post here in a couple of paragraphs!

Did I enjoy seeing the film on the 'Big Screen'? Well yes, but I would have enjoyed it more if it was 'Brand New', and NOT building or destroying on time honored traditions of the Green Hornet, IMO.

Would I have gone to see this film if it didn't have that 'Green Hornet' tie-in?  Probably not... Because of Seth Rogen's take on the title character, and seeing the trailers beforehand would have made me not really care to see the film.

The Black Beauty and Kato were the best things in this film for me.

Which are two of the three reasons I even re-play the 1967 TV Series episodes at times for Vinnie and myself. It's a shame that Britt Reid and the Green Hornet were 'dumbed down' so much.

I'm giving this 2011 Green Hornet film a VERY FINE MINUS (VF-) 7.5 on a comic book grading scale.

----------------------

The above reviews were from three people, from different age groups, (late baby boomer / a late tween / early baby boomer), and different levels of exposure to the 'Green Hornet' history, (a child during 1967 TV Series / not yet born / a teenager who loved the 1967 TV series).

Thus I believe the reason for the wide variance in 'comic book grading' this film!

Take the above, compare it to your level of knowledge of the Green Hornet, and decide for yourself as to whether or not to see it on the 'Big Screen' / '3D' it / or wait for the video.  It cost us $25 in tickets to see this film, and it wasn't the 3D version...
