TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3466 - Part 7 of a series on the 2011 Comic-Con International San Diego:

NOTE: Part 1 of this ongoing series about the 2011 Comic-Con, (Blog #3450),  gave a 'general overview' of why the San Diego Comic Con / Comic Con International: San Diego is very important to me.  Along with multiple links to previous years blog posts, photo albums dating back to 1973, etc, etc.

Part 2, (Blog #3458), pointed out shopping tips on what we are buying to bring to the Comic-Con.  I haven't missed a year since the Comic-Con first moved to the San Diego Convention Center back in 1991.  I first started attending as a comic book dealer back in 1972, at the El Cortez Hotel.  But I still have to plan out what to bring each year, as five days on my feet means a lot of trekking around the convention center and surrounding environs! This con is expanding out every year it seems, with programs being held at two different adjacent hotels now, at opposite ends of the convention center!

Part 3, (Blog #3459), posted the links to what panels / programs I believe are the most important for those of you that are first timers to this comic convention. Plus they are the most 'representative' of what Comic-Con International is, without 'Hollywood' panels / programs being included, UNLESS they are truly comic book oriented.

Part 4, (Blog #3460) posted the links to where I normally would be spending a lot of time at while on the exhibit floor of this comic convention. Where's that?!  Well... When I'm not attending panels / programs with or without my wife Tina, I'll be most likely at the 'Artists Alley' or 'Small Press Pavilion' sections of this convention center.

Part 5, (Blog #3461) posted a link to what is in store for those of you attending the 2011 Comic-Con and wondering about how to beat the online mess of trying to buy memberships for 2012! I don't want to 'repeat' myself here, so please look at the blog #3461 link for the 'news'!

Part 6, (Blog #3462) of this series... Well, Part 5 was about the future, so here I was taking a 'look' at the 'Past'!  And not just a look via my thoughts or collections of memorablilia obtained at Comic-Cons in the past... But from the collection of the 'Founder' of the SDCC himself, Shelf Dorf!

So here's Part 7 of this blog series...

But actually... It's just a link to the online version of this week's San Diego Reader!

That's because this blog is being written before I get my hands on a hard copy of the magazine... I'm having to check it out via online on Wednesday night if possible, or wait till Thursday morning enroute to the San Diego Convention Center!

A few months back, Jay Allen Sanford, a Facebook Friend of mine, posted a request on his own Facebook profile page, and then an 'event page' asking the following:

HEY SAN DIEGO COMIC CREATORS - wanna be interviewed for a COVER ARTICLE in the SD Reader ish published during Comic-Con? If you create comics, live in San Diego, and will hit the Con, we wanna profile you & your work, including publishing your art in the article, which will be ALL OVER San Diego and the Convention Center that week! Contact me ASAP! FB or email.

Here's the intro/question sheet I'm sending around:

JAS from the Reader here. We were wondering if you're attending this year's Comic-Con and, if so, do you have current comic projects or other plans that you hope to further at the show? (landing freelance assignments, an industry job, or ?)

This year, the San Diego Reader’s annual Comic-Con cover article will profile San Diego-based creators and publishers who are attending in hopes of selling, marketing, or simply networking for their creations or seeking an industry job. The issue will hit the stands on opening day of the Con, and will be available all over downtown and elsewhere around town, including/especially at the Con itself – note that the Reader is the second highest-distribution weekly paper in the U.S., having published weekly since the early 1970s, so this exposure at the show could prove invaluable to your efforts.

If interested, please provide replies to a few queries, so we can prep the issue accordingly. We’ll need replies ASAP in order to include your profile --

1. Please tell us a bit about yourself and your background in comics, as well as what neighborhood in San Diego you live in. We’d also like to know your approximate age, and how many/which other San Diego Comic-Cons you’ve attended in the past? If you’re looking to land work on someone else’s established property, let us know if you have a background doing this kind of work.

2. What is the property you’re working on and/or taking to the Comic-Con? (Unless you hope to land work on an established property) If you’re taking your own comic to the show, please give us a brief synopsis of your comic’s topic, characters, and anything else pivotal that you want to promote at this year’s show. Has it been published yet, or are you seeking a publisher? Are you doing/planning a web-only comic? If possible, please provide one or two artwork samples, formatted as jpg files and sent to my email along with your replies. If you’re a scripter with no artwork at hand, let us know --

3. MOST IMPORTANT: The main thing we want to hear from you is what this year’s San Diego Comic-Con means to you. Not is fluffy general terms, but specifically what you hope to achieve at the show this year. Do you feel your daily life could be changed because of what happens at the Con? What would be the ideal scenario and/or achievement you hope to experience because of the show?

4. If you’ve attended past Comic-Cons, what has been your best experience to date regarding your own aspirations as a comic creator?

Please provide your phone number and best email contact info. Once we process replies to this questionnaire, may we have permission to contact you directly with more specific followup queries? May we also have permission to publish your artwork samples in this issue of the Reader (you of course retain all copyrights and trademarks to your works, and we’ll run a copyright notice with the art listing whatever/whoever you request as the rights holder)?

Thanks very much for your participation in this cover article, and best of luck in all your endeavors!
Jay Allen Sanford

That was then... This is now... And all that I know about the finished article is the above featured cover shown at the top right of the blog post, and this mention by Jan Allen Sanford:

"My cover feature on San Diegan comic creators attending Comic-Con will run this Thursday, on opening day of the Con - over a dozen local creators are interviewed/profiled, including Oz artist Eric Shanower, IDW publisher Chris Ryall, Archie Meets the Punisher artist Batton Lash, Item Comics mainman Mikal Vollmer, and more --".

So unless I get a chance to read the online version on Wednesday evening, which I doubt, as I have a lot of ground to cover on the exhibit floor... I'll be looking for a hard copy on Thursday, enroute to the San Diego Convention Center!

Oh, and the link to the online issue's cover feature?  Right here! And YES, I'm looking forward to reading a hard copy of this special issue!

That's It for Part 7... As Comic-Con has already started this week, and I need to get back to it!

Please Note: I will be uploading photos at my Facebook Fan Page in the interim during the day if possible, via mobile uploads.  At:  'Michael D Hamersky On Comics'.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3465:

This comic book was moved up in my 'To Review' stack due to the fact that I had already read and review blogged issue #1 a while back, as seen here... And that the writer of the comic book series will be at the upcoming Comic-Con International that starts later today, Wednesday the 20th, with Preview Night, from 6PM to 9PM!

Please take a moment and check out what I said about issue #1 of this series...

Okay, back?

Well, this issue continues with an eye catching front cover.

The inside front cover is the 'credits page', which shows that the interior pages will be 'based on the works of L. Frank Baum.  Which I have to say must be pretty much right on, as Kirk Kushin was a recent attendee of the 2011 Winkie Con, the Official Wizard of OZ convention, and I don't believe they threw him out, LOL!

However, once again the first page, and the additional pages are printed in black & white, which can be a 'turn-off' for some potential readers.  For those of you that have to read your comics in color, and don't want to even peruse non-color comics... You are missing out on a good 2nd issue...

I mentioned before that I have received several Wizard of OZ comics in the fast couple of years.  This series so far ISN'T an adaptation of the series of OZ books just being rewritten into a current day 'grim and gritty' revisionist tale.

Which is just fine with me!

The main characters appear to act 'in character', although its been several years since I read most of the OZ books.

What I like besides Kirk's writing, is that the interior art is illustrated by Gonzalo Martinez which flows with the storyline and dialogue. No writer / artist conflict there.

Yes, the front color cover is painted by Sylwia Smerl, but once the cover grabs the attention of the possible reader / buyer of the comic... The interior art better deliver... This issue does!

Like I said above, its been a few years since I read the series of books, so when this issue #2 starts to introduce more of the gazillion Oz characters, I get a little lost on who is who and what they do (or did) in the book series.

However, I'm okay with Kirk bringing in Trot, Cap'n Bill, Scraps, and the Scarecrow, even though they seem to me to be with a twist in costuming(?) by Kushin & Martinez in art style.

What 'centered' this storyline for me, was that the story revolved (pun intended), around Dorothy's old house being converted into a museum.  Again, deja vu one more time... Another tornado whips it up into the air and off everyone goes... So it is a fun little caper, but I won't spoil it further for you!

Like issue #1, this second issue also contains a self-contained story, but I believe that Kirk is formatting it into part of a longer story arc.

It's been a while since issue #1 came out, but this issue #2 was worth waiting for!

I need to cut this review blog a little short, as although it is called 'Preview Night' at today's San Diego Comic Con... Everyone gets down there by noonish to stand in line to get in!

So, my comic book grade for this comic book is a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 grading scale.

Here's the link where you can obtain a copy of both issues #1 & 2.

Please note:  As I stated above, Kirk Kushin will be at the San Diego Comic Con International all five days.  He is at Booth Q-14 in the Small Press Area of the Exhibit floor of the San Diego Convention Center.

If you, like tens of thousands others who couldn't get tickets to get in this year, aren't attending the Comic-Con, you can still follow some of his time at the con by 'Liking' his Facebook Fan Page, here.

Thanks again to Kirk for sending me a preview copy in time to review blog for this Comic-Con!  See you there at your booth!

Vinnie's Take On: The Strand Prophecy by J.B.B. Winner

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3464:

(Vinnie) During the 2011 Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con, my dad met a trio of writers that go by the name of 'J.B.B. Winner'.

J.B.B. stands for the dad and twin sisters names, Jeff, Brittany, and Brianna Winner. My dad told them that he had a younger son that was interested by sci-fi, and they gave him a signed copy for me, which is why I am here today to review blog it after reading it.

The name of the amazing Sci-fi book I am reviewing is  "The Strand Prophecy," which has a sci-fi, scientific, futuristic, technological, and a 'Save the Environment' theme. It has an interesting way of being presented, as it firsts starts as a comic, and then transforms into a full-blown written book, with an art gallery at the end to tie it all together.
The comic makes as a great start to the story with quite well done art, however it lacks color. It makes a great start up point as it builds up the story easier for someone to get attracted to it due to it being in pictures and words, and it leaves you wanting to continue reading the novel prose section!

The story is about a normal guy, Steve Cutter, and his niece Anna. However, while he is 'Steve' to Anna, he becomes the 'hero' by the name of 'Strand,' to everyone else. He used to be a Darwinist historian and anthropologist, but he becomes a technological genius when his brother Jack dies, leaving him as the protector of Anna. He develops many futuristic technologies which he uses when he becomes 'Strand' that are much more advanced compared to the whole world's technologies.

He puts his forces to good use when he finds that the world is experiencing major DNA changes which he calls an 'excellerated evolution cycle' where everything is advancing faster than what previous scientists have thought. He takes his research to the president of the United States, where he tries to convince him that his claims are true. They later find mysterious creatures that prove the theory of the excelerated evolution process, but many countrie's forces still won't comply to the claims. More interesting events follow, and soon they find that this evolution is a threat to humankind as creatures change appearance, and their own abilities.

Honestly, this book is just amazing. It has a strong plot, strong character roles, and a great theme for a sci-fi book. This is definitely one of the best sci-fi novels I have read, possibly even one of the best books I have read of all categories.

I enjoyed that it included multiple 'platforms' to read it on, allowing for a wider audience and a great transition. I also liked the art gallery at the back which presented what appeared to be 'concept art' for the characters, machinery, and evolved creatures. It also gives a picture to put to each person, creature, or technology, which helps to better identify it.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this book series to any hardcore sci-fi fan, or even someone just starting out, such a YA (young adult reader). If they liked science or technology, then this should definitely be mentioned as a book to read over the Summer.
I give 'The Strand Prophecy' a Near Mint (NM), a 9.4 out of a 10.0 grade scale. I honestly can't wait to get the next books!

By the way... If you are going to the upcoming 2011 Comic Con International: San Diego (SDCC), you can visit them in their own panel on Sunday from 10:30 to 11:30 AM in Room 8. You will definitely not want to miss it!

The book can be found at your regular place of shopping for books, or at the web site: StrandTheBook.com.
There is a Facebook presence for the Winner Twins, but it appears to be a 'place holder' as my Dad calls it, as it is being promoted for new fans.  So I won't be linking to that at this time.

~Vinnie!
----------------------------------------

(Michael) Thanks, Vinnie!

I appreciate your reading this book that was personally autographed by the Winner Twins to you, and that you review blogged it before the start of the 2011 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

Why?

Well... The Winner Twins will next be at this Comic-Con and have a pannel on Sunday the 24th, as seen below:!

Sunday, July 2
10:30-11:30 The Winner Twins, America's Youngest Multiple Award-Winning Authors Share Their Writing Secrets— Teen authors Brittany and Brianna Winner, writers of the national bestselling "Strand" book Series, have written four science fiction novels, a screenplay and a comic book. They will share their writing process, how to overcome writers' block, and team writing skills. In addition, the twins will talk about how they had to overcome dyslexia on their journey to becoming America's youngest multiple award-winning authors. The panel will include Brittany Winner, Brianna Winner,  other panelists to be announced. All in attendance will receive a free Winner Twins Writing Secrets booklet. Room 8

Since I have not yet read this book with a comic book chapter in it... I'm not going to be able to give it a 'comic book grade' at this time...

Again, my thanks to the Winner Twins for bringing their book to my attention!

I hope you have a standing room only crowd at your panel!

~ Michael

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3463:

Last night, (July 17th), was the July 2011 meetup of Semantink's Comic Savvy at the Milano Coffee Company, in the Mission Valley area of San Diego, California.

And no, this isn't a brand new series of meetups going on in the San Diego Metro Area... Here's the link to the February 20th, 2011 Meet-Up, the April 2011 meetup , the May 2011 meetup, and the June 2011 meetup that I attended.  (I did miss the March 2011 meetup due to family members going to the hospital during that time.)

As stated in those prior blogs on this meetup... The 'official hours' of the meet-up are from 5PM to 7PM, on the 3rd Sunday of every month, but several persons, including my youngest son Vinnie, and myself  were having so much fun attending that we were there till 7:45PM last night, talking!

I've included one photo at the top right of this post, choosing to hi-lite Nathalie Grepe, who was one of the two winners of a giveaway last night, sponsored by this Blog.  Because of the limitations of this blog format, I've built a 'special photo album' titled 'July 2011 Semantink's Comic Savvy Meet-Up' at my Facebook Fan Page for you to see all that were in attendance, if YOU weren't there!  And  please.. Feel free to 'tag' yourself if you attended this meetup!

Christopher Henderson was the 'moderator' of the meetup last night.

First came the introductions going round the tables, and how many times that person had attended the Comic-Con International: San Diego (aka San Diego Comic Con), which was one of the two questions I had in mind to ask at this meetup.  The second question I had was whether or not that person would be attending this year's Comic-Con, because it was hard to buy memberships online this year, if you hadn't been there the year before in person to buy them then!

Here in brief is what was said.  Bear in mind that those attending the meetup are persons who are likely to read comics & graphic novels, and attend comic book cons, and view comic book movies!

Christopher Henderson:  Has attended 6 or 7 times at least, and is going to 2011 SDCC.

Andrew Rakestraw:  Attended 3 times, and Yes for 2011.

Louis: 2 times & No to 2011.

Rich Kuhaupt: 12 times - hasn't missed since 2006. Yes to 2011

Kimberly Prue Paul: 3 times - and Yes to 2011.

Michael D Hamersky:  Attended straight thru since 1991 when the Comic-Con moved to the San Diego Convention Center.  Set up as comic book dealer at the El Cortez Hotel in 1972.  Yes to 2011.

Vinnie Hamersky: 3 times & No to 2011.

Matt Dunford: Attended straight thru since 1994. Yes to 2011.

Steve Hendricks: 1st time attended in 1999, and Yes to 2011.

James Ninness: 5 or 6 times. Yes to 2011.

'Siemen' (sp.) 4 or 5 times. No to 2011.

Michael Wyatt: Has not missed since 1985. Yes to 2011.

Joe: 4 times.  No to 2011.

Jose: Straight thru since 2004. No to 2011.

Tiffany Smith: 3 times. No to 2011.

Daniel Touchet: 10 times since 2006. Yes to 2011.

Luke: Attended since the 1980s. Yes to 2011, but Sunday only.

Nathalie Grepe: 2 times. Yes to 2011.

Yanglyn Ou: 2 times. Yes to 2011.

Others came in after the intros, so did not get chance to participate on this.

Other mini-discussions were brought up, and then the group got back together to share their favorite moment at the Comic-Con. Here's just a few quick topics:

Jose's favorite was seeing Hall H for the first time.

Tiffany's was seeing the Captain from Firefly.

Daniel's was seeing the Last 'Lost' Panel.

Nathalie's was a Scooby Doo panel.

Sean's was getting sketches when he was 11 or 12 years of age from creators like Todd McFarlane.

Rich's was meeting three different people, including Jim Kelly.

Kimberly's was seeing the stars from the short-lived 'Nightstalker' TV series.

Michael D Hamersky's was setting up as a dealer in 1972 at the El Cortez Hotel.

Vinnie's was having cake brought to him at an after con party by Sergio Aragones.

Matt's was being served at a restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter by a costumed server who turned out to be Rosario Dawson in disguise!

Gary's was at the Big Ban Theory panel, when Bare Naked Ladies came out to perform the theme song.

Steve Hendricks' was the first time with an exhibitor pass.

James told a story about 'Data' from Star Trek and a limo.

Whew!  That was a lot of memories to cover... And some of the attendees had three favorites!  But not enough room to tell them all here!

As I said, Vinnie and I stayed till 7:45 talking with new attendees, and had a great time.  Please see the video at the top right of this blog post for what you can expect when attending one of the meetups, as everyone is welcome!

So... My thanks once again to Semantink Publishing sponsoring this monthly meet-up!  Here's the Facebook link to the event that just occurred, and here's the link to Semantink Publishing's Facebook Fan Page, which I encourage YOU to 'Like'!  Plus check out their several comic book series that are online.  When they publish hard copies of those in TPBs, I'll be sure to review blog them here!

Again, Semantink's Comic Savvy is normally the 3rd Sunday of every month, which has been held at the Milano Coffee Company in Mission Valley.  There is also another weekday meetup on a monthly basis that is sponsored by this same publisher, but I've not attended it, due to the traffic that hits on weeknights in the San Diego Metro Area.  (I live in North San Diego County.)

I'll mention the upcoming August Sunday evening meetup in an upcoming wall post at my own Facebook Fan Page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics', after the event page for August is created.  Again... This is a 'free' meetup to attend, AND Milano Coffee Co has great coffee and eats!

Till then...Have Some Fun!  Oh, and don't forget to check out the rest of the pics that weren't shown here at the blog, in the special photo album just for THIS July 2011 meet-up!

(And yes... for those keen-eyed individuals out there reading / viewing this blog post... Last night I was once again wearing one ofthe Navy Blue colored polo shirts with the 'ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com' name on them!  I needed new shirts for the upcoming Comic-Con in San Diego, and the darker color is what I chose to buy.  So I'll be wearing the Navy Blue colored shirts for the most part from now on at comic cons / sci-fi cons / etc., and using the indigo colored shirts for more 'everyday' wear, should you run into me around conventions or meetups like this one!)

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3462 - Part 6 of a series on the 2011 Comic-Con International San Diego:

As for Part 6 of this series... Well, Part 5 was about the future, so here I am taking a 'look' at the 'Past'!  And not just a look via my thoughts or collections of memorablilia obtained at Comic-Cons in the past... But from the collection of the 'Founder' of the SDCC himself, Shelf Dorf!

First of all, a BIG THANK YOU to Facebook Friend, Greg Koudoulian, for bringing this special exhibit to my attention!

Secondly, Another BIG THANK YOU to both Matthew Schiff, Multimedia Communications Associate, and Jane Kenealy, Archivist, at the San Diego History Center, for taking time out of their busy Saturday to show both my youngest son and myself the exhibit and the rest of the collection in the reseach library portion of this center!

I'm posting just a couple of photos here from the trip to the Center, and the rest will be posted in a special photo album, 2011 Shel Dorf SDCC Collection - San Diego History Center, at my Facebook fan page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics'.

My youngest son, Vinnie, and I spent a total of two hours at the Center, and I know that we will be back to take a closer look at the items that are not on exhibit, but can only be accessed via the downstairs research library.

The exhibit itself? Well, upstairs there are three exhibit cases with items that are more likely to be of a more general public interest  to those coming to the Center.  After all, it is a museum on San Diego History!

There are also banners on the wall in back of the glass cases, where you can stand in front of for photo ops, like we did, as shown at the top right of this blog.

The items presented in the cases include SDCC program books, flyers, photos and other memorabilia.  And even a comic book or two!

For more on this special exhibit... 'right click' on the top left photo, which is the promotional flyer for this exhibit. It will expand to a larger sized flyer that you can see clearer.

For additional info on hours and how you can access this material, feel free to contact the Center itself, as seen via this link.

Plus, I recommend clicking the 'LIKE' button on their Facebook Fan Page as well!

Again, my personal thanks to Matthew  (Matt) Schiff & Jane Kenealy for taking time out of their Saturday to meet with me to go over this exhibit.

I personally recommend you seeing this special exhibit upstairs and downstairs before it is taken off of display on August 2nd!  Of course you could still see the items via the research library afterwards...!

That's It for Part 6... And I believe this is the last of the blogs on the Comic-Con prior to the Con as... Comic-Con is only FOUR DAYS away!

Whew, busy week ahead!  And I already have the next four blog slots filled with topics...Just have to write them!

~Michael D Hamersky (who is shown in the below photo at the 1973 San Diego Comic Con, his 2nd comic con as a comic book dealer!)
