Midnight Tiger #1!

Ray-Anthony Height Showing Me A Copy of Midnight Tiger #1 (the KickStarter Exclusive Edition) at the 2013 LBCC EXPO!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3858 -    This review blog is on Ray-Anthony Height's comic book that was funded via a KickStarter program back in October of 2012

I've met Ray-Anthony a few years ago at a comic con, and then saw him in succeeding years at other Southern California comic conventions.  He went on to work for Marvel Comics, and other comic book companies.  This comic book, Midnight Tiger #1 is his first self published comic book, which he gave me at the recent 2013 Long Beach Comic Con Expo for possible review purposes.

So what is the comic book about?  Here's the promo for it via the KickStarter project:

The story revolves around young high school senior  Gavin Shaw, a disillusioned teen living in the crime infested city of Red Circle who's lost faith in the heroes he admired growing up. After attempting to save the life of the gravely injured hero known as Lionsblood while on his way home from school, Gavin finds himself waking up in a hospital bed days later with amazing new super human abilities and smack dab in the middle of a 15 year old secret that could unravel the fabric of the superhero community. Gavin is determined not to let that secret destroy his city.

Overall Theme: If you've ever felt that deep disheartened sensation that tells you that there is something BETTER out there waiting for you, but you feel trapped in the place you are and don't know why. If you've turned to look at a loved one and they seem to have given up on their hopes and dreams and you would do anything to inspire them to keep striving for their personal greatness, but don't know how. MIDNIGHT TIGER's overall theme deals with those very feelings. At its core, it is a character driven series that is part coming of age story and part hero's journey. A fun teenage superhero action-adventure told in the Silver Age style of comics that chronicles a young hero's rediscovery of his childhood dreams and his determination to help the people of his city rediscover theirs.  MIDNIGHT TIGER will examine the idea that in order to truly save a life, sometimes you have to inspire people to live.

The Creative Team: Creator/Artist/Plots - Ray-Anthony Height (Fear Itself: Fearsome Four, Shadowland: Power Man)

Writer -  DeWayne Feenstra

Colors - Paul John Little

Letters - Charles Pritchett

Okay... So what's My Take on this comic book?

Front Cover - A nice slick front cover of the Midnight Tiger, but I can't make out who or what the character is in the foreground...

Inside Front Cover - The Credits Page.  A well produced page with all of the necessary ingredients.

Splash Page - The 1st page is NOT used as a 'splash page'.

Interior Pages - The artwork is great as usual, being a fan of Ray-Anthony's work.  The storyline by Ray-Anthony & DeWayne Feenstra is a pretty good intro to the character.  The 22 page story is well paced.  I'm concerned from reading the KickStarter project that this is just the first of a nine issue story arc though.

Behind The Scenes - Since this was a KickStarter Special Issue, there is a special section instead of ad pages.  First there are 'A Few Words From Our Creator / Penciler', which I found to be interesting.

Then there is 'A Few Words From Our Writer' page by DeWayne Feenstra.

Then the following five pages are the names of those that contributed to this KickStarter Project, which I believe was 234 backers!

The last interior page was a 'Concept Design & Origin' page on the Midnight Tiger, a nice additional touch. The ad page from Write Height Media.com.

The Back Cover - Is a 'Meet Gavin Shaw' intro, which is an okay use of the back cover to help guide a potential buyer into purchasing the comic book.

I found this comic book to be in what I would call a 'Silver Age Format', which being 'Old School' myself... I quite enjoyed!  My only concern was the front cover with the unidentifiable character in the foreground, and that this would be a nine story arc, (nine issues), which I only found mentioned in the KickStarter project.

So what's my grade for this comic book?  Well... I'm giving it a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

You can purchase a copy of this comic book at Write Height Media.

My thanks to Ray-Anthony Height for bringing this comic book to my attention at the LBCC Expo!

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents More On...

The Detroit Triple Fan Fair!

As Told By Rich Buckler!

Rich Buckler at an early Detroit Triple Fan Fair!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3856 -    This blog is being posted to add a little more history on the Detroit Triple Fan Fair (DTFF) that I have blogged about in the past.

I just became Facebook Friends with Rich Buckler, the famous artist.  I sent him a blog that I had posted a few years ago, after meeting Dan Murphy out here in Southern California.  Dan had traveled here, and I met him shortly before he moved to Las Vegas.  Dan had been involved in the early years of the DTFF, and I published the memory he had of it in this Blog.

After reading the below message from Rich, I asked him if it was okay to post it in this blog.  He said fine, so here it is.

Hi, Michael:
I went to that link to give it a read. You know what? I have an original poster from that first Detroit convention--it's not in very good shape, but still extant. I posted a scan of that art on one of my blog entries at Diversions Of The Groovy Kind (or maybe it was 20th Century Danny Boy--one of those two anyway).

I was actually on the first committee for that con (yep--So one could say that I was, in a modest way, one of the founders of "organized comics fandom, being in that circle and working closely with Jerry Bails and sci-fi fan Marvin Giles).

I was also close friends with Shel Dorf at the time. Shel was responsible for getting my art samples sent to Jack Kirby--and that landed me work shortly thereafter at Marvel Comics. I produced many of the DTFFr progress reports and the program book, putting together everything in my living room and then handling the printing and mailing! Even in my teens I was somewhat of an "overachiever".

Check out those blog entries at the sites mentioned above. I cover some of those early fan days. And you're right--there's not a whole lot of information on the web or in print regarding the origins of the DTFF. Wonder why? It was an important part of comics history, I think.

Take care--RICH

Well, I want to thank Rich for his rememberances of the Detroit Triple Fan Fair in the message that he sent me above.  It was nice to hear from someone else that was at the DTFF during those early formative years!  As a matter of fact, Rich was actually one of it's co-founders. Rich was the main person to go to for the comic book aspect of the convention (remember, it was originally sci-fi, film, and comics). The science fiction fans who began things knew next to nothing about comic books. Rich was an avid science fiction fan back then (and still is), but for him: "...the comics were always my main focus. Organized comics fandom, in those days, was just beginning--and a lot of fan artists like myself were a part of making that happen. And I should mention that Detroit was a hotbed of creativity and a whole lot of pro comics artists came out of that milieu".

If you are reading this, and want to add your thoughts about the DTFF, feel free to message me at my Facebook Fan PageAlthough I've not been to one of those DTFF cons in the past, I have been nominated as 'Blogger of the Year' the past two years at the current day Detroit Fan Fair.

BTW, you can find more on Rich's history at: "Secrets Of Drawing Comics" and "Swash Buckler Saturdays" at Diversions Of The Groovy Kind.  Also there is more at: "From The Desk Of Rich Buckler" at 20th Century Danny Boy.

Plus, if you are a fan of his artwork, here is the link to Rich's own web site, where you can commission him for a drawing.

For a list of Rich's credits in comic books, be sure to check this page at the Grand Comics Database.

Oh, and for more photos on the Detroit Triple Fan Fair, take a look at my special photo album.

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That...

She Was 'Lava'!

Blog #3855 -  I'm back from the one day Long Beach Comic Con Expo, as shown yesterday in blog #3854.

While I was there... I went through some of the comic dealers' back issues boxes, and came across a few nice items to read and / or resell.

One of the items that I saw was a copy of the 1997 'Lava' comic book that was published by Crossbreed Press.

I've blogged about this comic book before and the model that was the 'star' of the comic book.  However, those blogs go back to 2007 / 2008 in the old eBay blogging format that this Blog of mine started out in.

So I'm going to re-format that blog and add some additional info here as well.

First of all, here's the publishing & credits info:
Title                Lava: Chapter One
Authors      Max Espinoza, Ruben Gerard, Rick       Valenzuela
Editor              Judy Sofer
Illustrated by  Gabriela Mottino
Publisher        Crossbreed Press, 1997

Here's what the comic book is about:
Written by Max Espinoza. Art by Ruben Gerard and Gabriella Motino. A chronicle of a a wild beauty's fight for freedom in an ecologically ravaged future. 32 pages, B&W. Cover price $2.95.

In an apocalyptic future, the beautiful bikini-clad Lava lives a simple life in the rocky Deadlands with her lover, until the day they wander too far into the green, lush forest. Lava awakes to find her lover murdered and herself at the mercy of Deadlands slave traders.

Soon, she finds herself the slave of her evil cousin, Queen Mala. Lava is pressed into gladiatorial contests to amuse the prison guards, and eventually into vicious fights in arenas for the amusement of the aristocracy.

Her spirit unbroken, Lava must plot her escape, if she can survive constant trial by combat. Will she break free from her dank prison, and rise above her hopeless existence? And will she someday have her revenge on the cruel Queen Mala?

My memory about this comic book is that back in 1997 at the San Diego Comic Con International... My two oldest sons and I met Leah Samonte, who was there in character dress to greet all those who entered the the Small Press area.  See 2nd photo on the right.

Her booth had a polaroid camera which was to have your picture taken with Leah in character as LAVA. So of course I had my boys have their pic taken with her as shown in the top left photo of this blog.

In the early to mid 1990's 'Good Girl' and 'Bad Girl' art in comics was the latest 'Hot' Fad, and there were plenty of models that had comics books based on their adventures. Most of them were sold based on the photo covers or artwork inside.

Today, looking via Google, I see that the small press publisher just had the one comic book published.  And that Leah Samonte doesn't appear in the search engine with a mention of the comic book!  So it must have been just one fabulous 'One Hit Wonder' from 1997!  Anyways, that comic book is what I wanted to share with you from the LBCC Expo today!

~Michael!

Of course my sons met more than just 'Lava' at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con International!
They also met 'Super Underwear Man' and his comic book!  As seen in the photo above!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3854...

Well, I've got just a short blog to post today, on where my wife, Tina LoSasso, and I travelled to yesterday!

That would be the Long Beach Comic Con Expo, that took place at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California, from 10AM to 6PM.

At the right are photos from that event.  Here is the link for the special photo album that these photos and the others that Tina  & I shot while at the comic con expo are placed at.

I've already posted blog #3851 that showed who would be in Artist Alley, and who would be guests of the Expo. The blog also had the links to previous years at the LBCC where I posted photo albums.

I had a pretty good time at this event, and really enjoyed seeing two panels in particular.

The first one was the 11 AM - 11:45 AM - Building Your Comic Book Collection Program in Room 103B.  Hosted by Bob Bretall, (2nd photo to the right).

The second one was the 5 PM - 5:45 PM - program titled: Marketing On A Shoestring Budget - Hosted by Dale Wilson of BuyIndieComics.com and Dani Dixon of Tumble Creek Press. Sebastian Jones of Stranger Comics filled in for a sick Dale

Tina enjoyed seeing all the new faces at this year's Expo! As seen in the 4th photo to the right.

I give this 2013 LBCC Expo event a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 comic book grade. Our Thanks to Phil Lawrence, Martha Donato (shown in the bottom photo with me), Mike Scigliano, and the rest of the staff at MAD Event Management for producing such a great ongoing event!  Next year the Expo is moving upstairs to a larger ballroom!

BTW, If you are in the LA Metro Area this upcoming November 23rd & 24th, you gotta check out their larger 2 day comic con! I'll be blogging more on that in the months to come.

If you went to the LBCC Expo... You are welcome to post your thoughts on your own personal experience at my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics
