TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3918 - Yesterday, I blogged about the American Comic Book Chronicles: The 1960s 1960 - 1964, as seen in blog #3917. Which was my review blog on the free book I won at the 20th Anniversary Panel for the TwoMorrows Publishing company at the recent 2013 San Diego Comic-Con International. In the same blog I mentioned that I had stopped in at the TwoMorrows Publishing booth on Wednesday's Preview Night. Why? Well... Ever since the Jack Kirby Collector magazine had gone to the oversized (Treasury size) edition, I had stopped subscribing. The USPS had messed up a few of the oversized magazines, and I elected to pick up my JKCs at the San Diego Comic Con International instead. So instead of getting my JKC fix every so often, it would be just once a year at the TwoMorrows booth at the SDCCI! Anyways, the photo at the top right of this blog post is a photo of me picking up the Jack Kirby Collector #61 from the Editor / Publisher, John Morrow, on Preview Night. NOW IN FULL-COLOR! JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR #61’s theme is JACK KIRBY: WRITER! Whether creating stories while drawing, or pecking away at a typewriter, Kirby gave his work a unique voice which fans either love or hate. Don’t miss this examination of the quirks of Kirby’s conceptualizing and wordsmithing, from the operatic FOURTH WORLD to melodramatic ROMANCE work, and beyond! There’s a feature-length Kirby interview, MARK EVANIER and our other regular columnists, NORRIS BURROUGHS on Kirby's design and composition on the NEW GODS, a comparison of STEVE GERBER’s Destroyer Duck scripts to Jack’s pencils, Kirby’s best promotional blurbs and sound effects, an unpublished STUNTMAN story (in color!), galleries of pencil art including NEW GODS, DESTROYER DUCK, 2001, and more, plus an unseen Kirby cover painting! Edited by John Morrow. Okay... So what's 'My Take' on this issue? Well... The choice of the scan on the cover page of the magazine was an interesting one... I don't see how it fit into the issue's theme of 'Jack Kirby: Writer', though... So I went ahead and turned to the inside cover page. Which was an in-house ad featuring 'TwoMorrows Publishing Update', which was interesting to read what was coming out from TwoMorrows other magazines. The first page was the Contents Page for issue #61. With the theme, 'Jack Kirby: Writer' at the top left. Then listing the articles that were presented in this issue. At the right was a 1979 illustration of 'She-Demon', a 1979 project that Jack had put together. The second page in was an article by John Morrow titled 'The "!!" Effect'. So right away the magazine went into presenting its features for the issue. I'm only going to mention the articles that appealed to me... Which included: WHACHUTALKINBOUTKIRBY? feature - 'That Is Strong Talk... Whoever You Are by Mike Breen. Which was a Quick Quiz -where 'Can you identify the sources of all of these typical Kirby quotes?'. I found the answer to be part of a very interesting article. The source was from my favorite series that Jack did over the years. INCIDENTAL ICONOGRAPHY feature - Greek God... To Hippie! by Sean Kleefeld. Which is part of an ongoing anlysis of Kirby's visual shorthand, and how he inadvertenly used it to develop his characters. OVERVUE feature - Poetry In Motion. Jack Kirby and the Death of JFK, by Kevin Ainsworth. A very detailed account by this author of Fantastic Four issues #25 & #26. Something I had not known about my favorite Jack Kirby series! Worth the price of this issue alone! GALLERY 2 feature - The Truth. A story by Jack that was to have been featured in a DC magazine titled: 'True Life Divorce. The pencils / partial inks on this seven page story are something to see! I enjoyed reading this, something I had never seen before by Jack! UNEARTHED feature - Jack Kirby & Outland by John Workman. A six page story that although a bit hard to read, presented a nice tale. Worth reading! KIRBY AS A GENRE feature - by Adam McGovern. A follow up on the Argo film, the Best Picture Award Winner at the Oscars for 2012. Presenting two scans that I had not seen before. RETROSPECTIVE feature - Where Kirby Stopped by Glen Gold. This article is on where Kirby left the Marvel train, per the author's thoughts. The Fantastic Four issues #74 through #77. Interesting reading, and something that I just may agree with... There are other articles in this issue as well, but the above individually named articles are my favorites of this issue. As you can tell... There were quite a few of them in this 100 page issue! So as for the comic book grade I'm giving this issue... Well, it is a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale. Overall the issue was very readable, and enjoyable. The Jack Kirby Collector is a magazine that I look forward to for each issue that is printed. My last review blog on this magazine series was issue #60 which I picked up at WonderCon in Anaheim in April of this year. As seen at blog #3838. Now that the magazine has been downsized from the tabloid size it was printed in for several years... I'm sure that the USPS will take good care of delivering this issue to your mailbox.
