In Old Santa Fe...
Featuring The Film Introduction Of Gene Autry!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4063 -   This morning, while watching movies I had recorded on TCM to view later, I saw the first ever movie appearance of Gene Autry!  The film was titled 'In Old Santa Fe!

Contrary to the film poster shown to the left, Gene did not have any film credit in the original release of the film back in 1934!

Indeed, the film's scene with Gene was just a small part of the movie.  Both he and Smiley Burnette sang a couple of songs during a dance at the dude ranch that the film was filmed at.

That was it.  Period.  You see, the part was considered to be a 'film test' for Gene Autry.  It did show Gene had talent and he went on to be filmed in 92 additional films!

BTW, this was also the film that George Hayes created his character of being a 'cranky but lovable' sidekick.  From then on he was known as 'Gabby' Hayes.

Ken Maynard was the 'star' when the film first was released.  But when the film was re-released, Gene Autry received top billing at the start of the film.

Not a bad start for what Gene Autry was to become... America's Singing Cowboy!

          ----------------------------

You may be asking what this blog has to do with comic books... Well, a few years back I blogged about receiving a consignment of Western comic books.

That consignment included several Gene Autry comics, as well as Roy Rogers.

I mentioned the consignment to my mom, Lois E Hamersky, who had fond memories of Gene.  He was her favorite cowboy western actor, while Roy Rogers was her sister's favorite.

I lived in the Los Angeles area for several years, and watched several old TV Shows and films starring both Gene & Roy.  My favorite of the two was Roy Rogers and Trigger.

During my years as a comic book dealer, (ComicBooksCircus.com), I have sold multiple westerns.  Most of them were sold to collectors in both Germany and Australia, when I was shipping outside of the USA.  You can see the Gene Autry comics that were published by viewing this link at comics.org.

In summary, I enjoyed seeing the film where Gene Autry started back in 1934 in the movies!  If TCM shows it again, I'd suggest you DVR it to view later!

50 Years Ago Today...
Batman On TV!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4062 -   I wanted to mention that today is the 50th Anniversary of the Batman TV Show back in 1966!  Yes... Today!

It doesn't seem that long ago to me, but then again, I was just a teenager, (aged 13), when it first appeared.

I of course watched it on TV, for all three seasons, seeing almost every episode, almost all 120 of them, for the three seasons that it ran on ABC TV.

          ----------------------------

A few years back I was asked by Jim Beard to be one of the contributors for his then projected book titled:  'Gotham City 14 Miles'.  I gladly accepted the challenge and wrote my chapter for the book. It was fun doing so, and I thank Jim Beard for the assignment!

To think that today, a few years later after that book was published, comes the 50th Anniversary of that magical date when the Batman TV Show burst on the screen with its  Pow! Zap!  Bam!... WoW what excitement that was!

Plus today you can buy a legitimate copy of all 120 episodes on DVD, not like when I had to buy a bootleg copy to refresh my memory to write my chapter for the 'Gotham City 14 Miles' book! (For more info on GC14M book, see this link for past blogs on the book.)

Congrats to the Batman TV Show on celebrating its 50th Anniversary!

Remembering Elvis Presley...
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Other Cons

Elvis Presley During His Birthday Week

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4061 -   I wanted to mention that Elvis Presley would have been 81 years old this past weekend, (January 8th), had he lived on.

I've posted a few blogs in the past about January 8th being Elvis' birthday, (# January 2010, January 2011 - #3319 ) and have been reading others tributes to Elvis since the 8th online.

I wanted to mention one of the sources I found to be of much interest to me, as what I've been reading in it is very informative.  It is at:  www.elvis-history-blog.com, and is written by Alan Hanson.

The blog is published twice a month, and it goes back eight years.

I found the blog titles fascinating and the 2,000 - 2,500 words in each blog makes fine reading!

If you are a fan of Elvis, or just would like to know more about him... Check out Alan's blog!

I've been playing many of my Elvis LPs during the last month... On the new record player I bought for myself for Christmas.  Nice to have some thoughts about Elvis this week.  It does seem strange that he would have been 81 had he lived on... He passed away at age 42.

Happy New Year!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Wishes All Of You...

A Happy New Year!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4060 -   I wanted to wish all of the readers of this blog a Happy New Year for 2016!

It's been a long 2015, and I'm kind of glad to see it gone...

Seeing in the New Year comes with viewing the KTLA Channel 5 showing of the Rose Parade

This year marked the 127th Parade!

It also marked the last year of my favorite team of announcers for this or any parade, that of Bob Eubanks and Stephanie Edwards.

They have spent most of the past 35 years together doing this annual parade.

Bob had started 3 years earlier, with two other co-hosts. Stephanie had stepped out in 2006, but came back in 2009.  For more on this history, please see Bob's Wikipedia entry.

I know that 2017's Rose Parade won't be the same without them... You see, I started watching them when I lived in the Los Angeles / Orange Counties areas when they started.

Sad things put aside, I'm looking forward to what 2016 brings me...

I hope that 2016 brings nothing but good for all of you also.

Happy New Year!

~ Michael D Hamersky

A Merry Christmas!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4059 -   I wanted to wish all of the readers of this blog a Merry Christmas for 2015!

It's been tough sledding around here the last month and a half.  My daughter was hospitalized for the fourth time in the last month and a half last night, so she will be celebrating Christmas in the hospital this year.  We almost lost her the third time she was hospitalized, as they had the crash cart and the special team ready.   Like I said, tough sledding around here this Holiday Season.

Anyways, I wanted to post this blog before leaving to go back to the hospital.  Oh, and on top of that we saw her maternal grandmother last night at the hospital.  Seems that Nana was at the emergency room also and was not aware that we were there also.  Like my daughter said last night, "It's Family Night at the Hospital!".

So, I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas.  I hope it is a fine one for all of you!

(Note:  We should all be fine this Christmas holiday even with the hospitalizations...)
