Today my wife Tina is our 'Guest Blogger' with her thoughts on... Volume 4 of "Amelia Rules! When The Past Is A Present". Amelia Rules! has been a comic book series, and this is a compilation of several comic book issues into Trade Paper Back format, (TBP). Here's Tina's post: Amelia Rules by Jimmy Gownley is fun for tweens that parents will approve - but don’t tell the kids! Volume 4: “When the Past is a Present” is a joy – funny, clever, and heartwarming. The new kid in school, 4th grader Amelia has her share of problems – her newly divorce mom is dating again – yikes! But she gets by with a lot of help from her zany friends, including a caped semi-super hero. The pre-teen set will enjoy the storylines – adolescent angst, bullies, dating, running away, first kisses. Parents will approve the gentle exploration of these and more serious issues – parents going off to war, divorce, and the importance of family. Beyond the stories, I was impressed by the artwork and writing, which also works on an adult level. Cartoonist Gownley manages to convey detailed storylines of Amelia’s wild imaginings, crazy adventures and secret fears all within the limited space of a graphic novel. It’s well-done indeed. Amelia Rules! earns a higher grade than little Amelia gets in school: A+! Enjoy, ~Tina
