TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3137: Earlier this week I posted on my Facebook Group Page, (found at Hamersky.com), that I had received a 'Facebook Event Invite' to attend the May 16th meeting of Semantink's Comic Savvy in the Mission Valley area of San Diego. So last night I drove down to check it out, making sure I would be back in time for the Season Finale of 'Survivor' to watch with Tina at home. The 'Facebook Event' showed the following: Semantink's Comic Savvy! Date: Sunday, May 16, 2010 "We will meet, enjoy a java-inspired beverage, chitchat on everything comic books (and maybe more), perhaps meet some industry professionals and hopefully learn more about comics from one another through inspired dialogue." This event's page, even though it is now over, can be found by clicking here. What I found at this meeting, was that it had been previously held elsewhere, and that this location was the first time they had met here. I found that the parking was a limited time duration, and that a parking permit placard was needed to be placed in my car's windshield, so as not to be towed after the one hour time limit.The meeting was casual, beginning at 5 PM, and not going too much in depth at first, allowing those others that were expected to be there to find parking and walk to the coffee house. The first topic was the Iron Man 2 Film that recently opened. That was a good ice breaker for those attending and not knowing each other. Additional films including 'Kick Ass', 'Watchmen', and 'The Dark Knight' were brought up. From there other topics were discussed that included comic books themselves. Several attendees, including myself, would break from the group and order additional coffee refills, as Milano Coffee Co had a 5 at 5 Coffee Special going on. $5 for unlimited coffee refills starting at 5 PM. There were also sandwiches and wraps available from the coffee house. The sponsor of the meeting, Semantink Publishing, was represented by four of the eleven persons attending. The topics were not mainly about indy comics, which is what Semantink publishes... but instead were a lot about mainstream comics. Also, the ages of the attendees were far ranging, from the mid 20's to the mid 50's. There was one female there out of eleven attendees, Shannon Forrey, who has read comics since a young age. The comics reading experiences of the attendees ranged from the Silver Age of Comics to the Modern Age of Comics. Indeed, we even viewed a comic book on the iPad brought in by Christopher Henderson! Which got me to conducting an informal survey. I have already blogged about the LCBS in the Metro San Diego Area that participated in the 2009 FCBD (Free Comic Book Day), as seen by clicking this link. With such a wide range of experiences with those attending last night, I decided to ask where each normally picked up new comics. This was the tally: 4.5 Southern California Comics (a.k.a. SoCal Comics). 1.5 On Comic Ground 1.0 Comics N' Stuff (the biggest chain in San Diego) 1.0 ComicKaze 1.0 Borders (graphic novels & TPBs) 1.0 Amazon 1.0 None (did not pick up new comics) I found the above informal survey interesting. As the attendees have a lot of choices to choose from to buy new comics in Metro San Diego. There were additional topics discussed, and we all found ourselves to be enjoying the conversations so much that we ran over the 'official' ending time! I thanked everyone for making me feel welcome, and proceeded to head back up to North County San Diego, where I joined Tina who was already watching the 'Survivor' Season Finale, already in progress....
