TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3328:

I've been asked why I haven't blogged about the ABC series, 'No Ordinary Family', because after all... Isn't it a 'superhero' show?

Well, beore the WGA Strike interferred with that year's TV Season back in 2007-08, I was blogging about a LOT of TV shows, 'superheroes' based or not!

Now I just blog about those shows that have a definite 'comic book' history, like 'Human Target', or have a comic book promotional item to draw in the viewing audience, like 'The Cape'.

I saw parts of both 'The Cape' and 'No Ordinary Family' panels at the 2010 Comic-Con International: San Diego (a.k.a. SDCC). 'No Ordinary Family' was at 3:15 - 4:15 on Saturday the 24th.

The main reason that I wanted to see 'No Ordinary Family' was because Michael Chiklis was starring in this TV Show.

I've liked watching Michael Chiklis portray 'The Thing' in the two Fantastic Four theatrical films. Those were a 'perfect portrayal' of both Ben Grimm and 'The Thing', IMO.

I also like Michael's portryal as 'Jim Powell' in this TV series.

However, after realizing that I was watching the 13th episode of this series, I had to wonder why the series wasn't 'clicking' for me?!

I asked Tina, (my wife), who was watching with me, (and checking her Droid), what she thought of this series.

Her reply: "I don't feel compelled to watch this".  She followed up with: "It's not bad, but... It's like a mayonaise sandwich".

Which brought me back to reality, right during the commercial break.

Yes, there are comic book references in this series, like tonight's reference to 'Kitty Pryde' from the X-Men.

But 13 episodes into this series, neither Tina nor I can fully name the main characters names in the series, let alone their 'real names'.

Tina and I both started asking each other questions about the show and Tina stated further... "It's a very bland show, very predictable".  She also added: "You can be 'cute' and be a family oriented show, yet have an action packed entertaining show".

Tina ended with the fact that we both love 'EUReKA' and 'Warehouse 13', which was ironic, because Joanne Kelly, who plays 'Myka' in Warehouse 13, was the guest star in this 13th episode of 'No Ordinary Family'!

The super-powers that the four family members obtained in this show are not overpowering which is good, and are actually relatively realistic. Yet the show seems a little 'disjointed' to me, when watching each family member do their own thing with the powers in individual scenes.  There seems to be 'no direction' in their discovering their powers and what they could do with them.

Additionally, Stephen Collin's role as Dr. Dayton King, Stephanie's boss at Global Tech, wasn't even seen in the episode by 8:51 PM, nor did he show up in the remaining minutes or in the preview of next week's episode.  He is supposed to be the main 'bad guy' of this series, but is under utilized..  And I like Stephen Collins as an actor.  And Julie Benz was fine in 'Roswell' and 'Desperate Housewives'.

There are moments or scenes that 'work' for me in this series, like the ending scene of the 13th episode. Jim asks: 'You guys remember 'Die Hard'?  I lived it!", but unfortunately not enough of them for me to rave on about this show.

The series has been picked up for a full season, per news on October 25th.  I know that I'll continue to watch, but I also know that when 'Glee' returns to Fox, Tina will want to watch that show 'live' and tape 'No Ordinary Family' to watch later with me.

We both think that the writing of this series is what is keeping us from liking it more.  Plus the cast of the show doesn't seem to 'jell' for us.  So after 13 episodes into the 'full season', we just don't have the 'immediacy' to watch it live, unless 'Glee' is on season break like it has been.

Unfortunately I have to give this series a 'Comic Book Grade' of FINE (F) 6.0 out of a possible 10.0 grading scale... Which is a shame, because this show had better potential when it was first previewed at the 2010 SDCC... I'm hoping that this show can turn it around in time to be renewed for the next season.
