TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3369: My thanks to Roger & Val Kevan of RV's Komix, who sent me copies of the preview publication for the 2011 Phoenix Comicon! Roger & I go way back to the early days of the Comic-Con International: San Diego, when it was first known as the San Diego Comic Con. He, Val and I met up again recently at the 2010 Comic-Con, as seen at the top left of this blog post. The preview publication's cover displays several characters, thus showing the reader that there are several elements that comprise the comic con. Including DC Superheroes, Marvel Superheroes, Steampunk, Sci-Fi, and fantasy. Checking out the inside front cover I found that several of the 100+ guests that are attending this year are from TV & Film also. Including Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, Billy Dee Williams, Bruce Boxleitner, Adam Baldwin, Elvira, and more! Of course there are comics guests as well, including Stan Lee, Todd McFarlane, Mark Texeira, Stan Sakai, Whilce Portacio, Michael Golden, Todd Nauck, Dan Wickline, Kirk Kushin, and Larry Hama among others mentioned on the first two pages. Programming... You ask about programming? Well, there's over 500+ hours of events at the upcoming Phoenix Comicon! There were several listed in the preview publication, along with pics from previous cons. Additionally there are a few events, including: Kids Need to Read, Geek Prom Charity Event, Charity Art Auction, Smuggler's Run, and Bounty Hunt that were listed in the publication. The Con Hotel, Hyatt Regency, had its rates published, which seemed to be a fair amount to me to stay so close to the con center. There was also a listing of several of the 'Con Exclusives', including Lady Death comics, Mecha Lincolnstein piece, Tyrannosaurus Rex print, etc., which always have interested parties looking to score con exclusives like those. Avatar Press seems to be coming to Phoenix Comicon in a 'big way', with creators, exclusives, etc. This con also has Anime & Costuming being featured. Plus gaming going on. There will be a 'Steampunk' presence at the con, with a 'Steampunk Ball', and a 'Steampunk Fashion Show'. Plus a couple of our favorite TV shows will be represented there by cast and creators, including those from CHUCK & EuREKA! There seems to be a lot of different pop culture niches being covered at this show. For those of you that attended last year, and were a little disappointed in the staging of the registration... That issue appears to be addressed for this year. Matt Solberg has an 'open letter from the convention director' stating that the size of the Con has tripled for this year. And that the registration problem from last year has shown the organizers a need for indoor registration lines. So if you are in the area, check it out! The con runs from May 26th - 29th of 2011. Yes, that is the Memorial Day Weekend! Full event passes $35 until May 25th. Kids 12 & Under Free with paying adult! The 2011 Phoenix Comicon will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center & the Hyatt Regency! Here is the Facebook Fan Page for Phoenix Comicon.
