TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3456: Comics A Woman Who Doesn't Read Comics Is Reading A special column for guys trying to get their gals into comics and for gals who've never read a comic book and are trying to understand what the heck their guys see in comics. First in a continuing series! Review: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Graphic Novel) by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith - Adapted by Tony Lee; Illustrated by Cliff Richards. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife who has been trained in the deadly arts and can dispatch a frenzy of zombies with only a dagger. At least, that's the premise of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", the surprisingly clever publishing monster created by Seth Grahame-Smith that spawned "Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters", and "Android Karenina". Just as fans of comics, sci-fi, fantasy, and even Jane Austen created a literary genre called 'fan fiction', Grahame-Smith has given birth to a whole new form of fiction-fantasy parody mash-ups. P&P is Jane Austen's best known work with a multitude of film and television renditions. (My fav being the classic 6-part BBC mini-series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.) There are scores of Austen fan fiction to answer the question of whether Pemberley equals happily ever after. Others bring Austen's themes into modern day, the most satisfying being "Bridget Jones's Diary" by Helen Fielding. But none have adequately explained why Charlotte married the Mr. Collins, what was so formidable about Lady Catherine De Bourgh, and what in the heck did those Bennet girls do all day? Now with P&P and Zombies we get answers. Jane Austen is my favorite novelist, P&P my fav of all. I've read my share of the fan fiction and have been mostly disappointed. But from the first, I was intrigued by P&P and Zombies. When I saw the graphic novel adaptation, I grabbed it like a pack of zombies on a hapless human. Finally I could indulge my interest without having to wrestle my way through 320 pages of the reworked novel. My verdict? Fun, fun, fun. And, this from a gal who doesn't like horror or gore. While the romance is silly, the dialogue is filled with the wit you'd expect. Grahame-Smith pays homage to the best scenes with macabre twists on Austen's much more restrained action. In this variation of Austens world, thankfully young woman have better things to do than wait for a marriage proposal; unfortunately for them, it's fighting "unmentionables". If you love Austen, and can stomach some gore and assorted brains, you'll love Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Good news: like all things Austen, there's a movie in development for 2013! Grade: VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale. ~Tina LoSasso -------------------- Thanks, Tina, for your new column today!
