TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3501:

(Vinnie)  When visiting my Dad, I found a comic book titled "Zombie Ranch" in the "Books to Review" box at my dad's house.

I have a slight bit of affection for zombies, whether they be movies, books, cosplayers, or plush toys, and I found this comic to be interesting.

I decided to read this second issue, thinking I would be a little bit lost considering I hadn't read the first issue, but it was quite the opposite. The creators, obviously thought it through, and made it so you would be up to date with it, even if you hadn't read the first book, by summarizing it up in a neat little paragraph on the inside cover. I haven't seen this being done for too many publications so far, and I think it was a good choice to include it. Although not required to understand this issue, I think I will pick it up out of my dad's collection and read it to fully understand the concept.

Anyways, the story was quite interesting. It is about the making of a reality TV show on the peculiar occupation called zombie ranching. The reason for "ranching" the zombies, is because of the fact that their blood can cure cancer. I do not know how that would work, but apparently it could be used as lipstick, pills, serums, makeup, and other miscellaneous products. It's definitely not something that I have heard from another movie or book. So basically, it's so far, just been a camera following the ranchers doing their job. A mysterious person travels to the private, biohazard land, with unknown intentions. It then left off with a mystery with a character whom I had not yet seen, viewing someting that came in a package dropped by a helicopter.

The art was fantastic. It was very vibrant and colorful, despite maintaining a "doom and gloom" feel to the ranch. The artist showed that she had many different styles of drawing, including an anime type of sorts, to a more realistic, detailed figures. The anime was in the advertisement for the show, and was represented in the comic. The art matched the theme, and it just looked perfect for the story. I'm having trouble explaining it- you just have to see it for yourself.

I really enjoyed this comic. I do plan on picking up the 3rd issue, as well as the others following. It's a good series and has a good storyline, flow, and art. It is also suspenseful, and keeps you reading on, which in my opinion, is what makes a good book.

I give "Zombie Ranch" a Very Fine/Near Mint (VF/NM), a 9.0 out of 10.0 grade scale. You can pick up this comic, the first issue, and other Zombie Ranch products at www.zombieranchcomic.com, as well as talk to the creators themselves! I'd suggest taking a look at it if you want to learn more.

Note: Vinnie makes it to as many conventions with me as he can. He collects the 'Amazing Spider-Man' comic book series, but is open to read other titles from publishers that print titles that are age appropriate for him.  He also has been attending 'behind the scenes' events, such as the one he blogged about ht here: Vinnie's Special 'Look at The Captain Rochester Party for the Artists' at the recent 2010 Comic-Con International: San Diego! He really had fun meeting and having dinner with Sergio Aragones, Bob Burden, Scott Shaw! and others there at this exclusive after hours Comic-Con Party in San Diego!
