What Exactly Are CGC Graded Comic Books And Why Should You Care?

The Title Of This Post

Says It All !!

What Exactly Are CGC Graded Comic Books And Why Should You Care?

This is a 'repost' from our Blog back in November 2006. It is repeated here today to help those 'mainstream' buyers who have been either calling or e-mailing us to either get their comics graded so they can sell them or are looking to buy but can't figure out how who to trust when it come to grading. Here is Tina's prior blog post:

What Exactly Are CGC Graded Comic Books And Why Should You Care?

That is a question that we asked earlier in our eBay selling career.

For some time now we have been selling our comics as 'raw' comic books, meaning that they were 'unslabbed', and not graded by a 'third party'. The 'raw' comics were graded by my husband and then bagged with boards inserted to protect the comic book until it was sold.

My husband, Michael, has been a reader of comics since the late 1950's, a collector since the early 1960's, sold as a dealer at the early 1970's  San Diego Comic Cons, (SDCC), and has the experience of finding great deals at comic book conventions for sale in my eBay Featured Store in the 2000's.

We have all three Editions of the Overstreet Grading Guides, and our grading has been praised in many of our eBay positive feedbacks.

However, no matter how good you might think your grading is, there is always some prejudices involved while grading.  Michael doesn't particularly like slightly mis-wrapped covers and downgrades for those, but others would not.  Some collectors are a little more fussy about misplaced staples, while others place more emphasis on the spine.  How does one get around this grading dilema?

Well, we have been watching the 3rd party grader, CGC, for a while.  We finally decided to ship off several comics for their grading and encapsulation. Why? Because 'slabbed' encapsulated comics are becoming a 'commodity' instead of a collectible encased inside a plastic holder.

Indeed, there is even at least one web site that shows how CGC graded comics are faring sales wise and price wise. We have subscribed to the service at www.gpanalysis.com for CGC graded comics sales history.  The history goes back to September 2002, so there is now a little over four years of history.  That is why we know that one of our current CGC graded comics, Fantastic Four #17 in CGC 9.2 grade, is the highest known copy (per GPA) of that issue for sale, ( and will be when it hopefully sells at or above our reserve price), since 2002.

CBG, (Comics Buyer's Guide) has a great book out, called Standard Catalog of Comic Books 4th Edition, that we also have, but being in print makes it not as current as GPA is.  Plus it is a little unwieldly being so bulky.  However it is a great reference for those that don't want to pay a monthly fee for a service such as GPA.  CBG also had a monthly magazine that showed the latest averages for NM 9.4 CGC sales for popular comic book titles.

Back to the main theme of this post.... With 3rd party graded comics, even though there are some questions on their grading standards on some discussion boards, at least the comic is stated to be a certain grade, which the seller and potential buyer can recognize that an authority is stating as such.

Otherwise some sellers would tend to overgrade while some buyers would tend to undergrade, and in older comics a 'half grade' difference can mean hundreds of dollars. The 'slabbed' comics have a seal, which when broken, voids the stated grade. A picture of me holding some recent CGC slabbed comics can be seen below.

While we will continue to sell 'raw unslabbed' comics, we will be joining the growing numbers of dealers who are submitting their 'raw' higher grade books to CGC for grading.  It is far easier from a marketing standpoint to have the large decimals at the top left of the holder show exactly what stated grade the encapsulated comic book is.  Additionally each slabbed comic comes with a certification number that can be looked up for additional details about the graded comic.

This post is not meant to be an endorsement for CGC, or any other 3rd party grader, it is meant to state that in the current evolution of e-selling on the internet means that standardization has to be in place, and we have decided to  Make It So for our current and future customers!

Thanks for listening!

Tina

Above is an example of a high grade CGC Graded Comic Book, graded at 9.6 which is NM+ (Near Mint Plus). This is a highly regarded and popular comic book series, and 9.6's of this series don't sit unsold for long!  'Tomb of Dracula' Ran For 70 Issues in the 1970's! Just click the above photo to see what issues we currently have in stock!

An 8.5 is considered high grade when in a 'raw' state, but most comics sent in by dealers are usually looking for a 9.4 or above in modern day comics. Modern day are considered from approximately 1980 to current. This is still a desirable comic, but does not command a large premium. Daredevil and Elektra are very popular even tho their movies were not high grossing in the theaters! Check out the DD comics in our eBay Featured Store by clicking the above cover!

For you HoRRoR and / or MoNSTer Comic Book Fans you already know that most of the comics that come your way are usually well read, worn comics. So when a 9.6 NM+ comic comes your way, you know you should get it graded!   Besides 'Tomb of Dracula' comics, we also have more HoRRoR comics listed for sale in our eBay Featured Store. You can view them by clicking the above cover!

Was Played By Ben Affleck....

A Real Daredevil in the Comic Book Based Movie !!

Ben Affleck was born as Benjamin Géza Affleck-Boldt in Berkeley, California, to Tim Affleck, who was a social worker, and Chris Boldt, a school teacher.

At eight years of age, Affleck met ten-year-old Matt Damon who lived two blocks away in Cambridge. Affleck and Damon would later attend Cambridge Rindge and Latin School together, although they were in different year groups.

Ben came to national attention in 1997 when he and best friend Matt Damon wrote the screenplay for and starred in Good Will Hunting.

After other sucessful films, Affleck starred in Daredevil, a 2003 movie directed by Mark Steven Johnson, who also wrote the screenplay. The movie is based on the Marvel comics character, using predominantly the 'grim and gritty' stories written by Frank Miller.

As a sidenote, Ben subsequently dated his Daredevil co-star, actress Jennifer Garner who portrayed Elektra, and the two were engaged. In May 2005, it was announced that Garner was pregnant and the couple were married on June 29, 2005 in the Caribbean. Garner gave birth to a daughter, Violet Anne Affleck, on December 1, 2005.

I started with the Daredevil Comic Book when it first appeared in print, back in 1964, and stopped reading it in 1974... so I missed the change to the 'Grim and Gritty' aspect by Frank Miller and others in the 1980's.

The Daredevil Movie and the Elektra Movie that featured Jennifer without Ben, were both of a 'Grim and Gritty' Style,' but I still enjoyed both of them, mainly because of Jennifer!

For those interested in the Daredevil comic books, we have several listed in our eBay Featured Store, including the comic to the right! We also have a few Elektra comics that Jennifer Garner portrayed, just click on the cover to the right!

Ok, to be honest, there is NO WAY we could watch ALL of the above, nor would we want to!!

We are currently watching The 4400 on DVD to catch up with it. The first two seasons have been outstanding, with only ONE poorly written episode (IOHO) so far!

There are some shows like 'Smallville' that I have just never been able to get into... even though we sold out of ALL the recent TV Guides with the Smallville picture on the cover and can't keep Smallville comics in stock!  Probably best to start with season One on DVD, as it is now going to start Season Seven!

By the looks of sales, the Bionic Woman Show could be a breakout hit this Fall!  Can't come up with any items to sell as those promo items were snapped up quick at the conventions we have been to!

Who Wants To Be A Superhero comic book #1 is sold out out the stands and is OOP at the publisher! We only have two copies left for sale at this time....

We are waiting for the Heroes #2 promo comic book to be sent back to us from CGC with their 3rd party grading. We have five copies (NM or better?) enroute sometime in the future to us for to list for auction sale!

We just sold this past week the FIRST APPEARANCE of Doctor Who in an AMERICAN comic book, those are not easy to find anymore!

Kyle XY the promo comic is still available in our eBay Featured Store... it picks up from where the first season ended!

Desperate Housewives ended on a high note with season three, after stumbling around in season two.  Hopefully it will stay the course...

That's it for this blog post, keep us in mind when you want to know more about some of the shows above! We mainly blog about Sci-Fi and Action Shows, but we also blog about American Idol results in season believe it or not!!

Thanks for reading this pop culture / comics - comic book - comic books blog post and feel free to post your comment about this TV Show below!

Seeing 'Double Double' !!
Mood:  incredulous
Topic: Comic Book History

(Update On Alan Class UK Reprints AND New 'Double Double' Comics!)

This Is From Two e-Mails Received From An UK eBayer...

... that introduced the Alan Class series of reprints to our blog. The previous post is linked here.  Here are his recent e-mails to us.

(First e-mail presented here:)

Hi,
I read your blog and it was nice to see the Alan Class genre highlighted by yourselves. It brings to the forum a whole wide rangeing aspect to comics and their history.

Alan Class is a logistical minefield and tracking down which original issues featured in the reprints is an even harder task. As a quick note I tracked down several copies which featured the covers of original marvel greats such as Fantastic Four #1 and Tales of Suspense #39.

I even came across a bunch of UK bound comics, which I had initially thought were reprints similar to Alan Class. (A new can of worms opening up here). These are Called 'Adventure Double Double Comics'. Originally priced at 10p so Im guessing early seventies here (as their is no publisher info or any info to be precise).

Looks to me like a whole bunch of Silver Age US origin comics were bought up, covers removed and put into these sort of DC Annual editions. I am pretty sure that these are NOT reprints.

One of the examples has complete comics of: Adventure Comics 368, Worlds Finest 175, Wonder Woman 163 and Aquaman 28. I'll let you know of any more info I dig up.

(The second e-mail follows:)

Looked into the Double Double Comics a bit more. Thorpe & Porter (A UK distributor) who repackaged a lot of old US Golden age comics, were later bought out by DC, to act as their sole distributor to the UK. Any of the unsold DC comics were then removed from their covers and repackaged into these 'bumper' value comics.

The interesting thing about this is, as Ive just found out, each one was unique (say Batman Double Double Comics Number 3) having a random selection of comics put into a glue bound cover. One copy could have say, Batman 172,189,191 and possibly a Detective Comics in there for good measure, whilst the same issue could have four different Batman related comics!!

I've rummaged around and found that the occasional Marvel, or other publishing house comic could find its way in there by accident!! Along with this I've noted several different versions of this (I could write a book about this area of comic collecting), Justice League Double Double, Action Comics Double Double, Batman Double Double, Adventure Double Double, Superman Double Double & Jimmy Olsen Double Double so far.

I'm suspecting that titles such as Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Superboy, Aquaman, Brave & Bold etc would be found in some of these issues. These in my opinion are rather scarce, given the fact that British Collectors would shy away from such comics.

As Ive mentioned with Alan Class getting a little revival, I've a feeling these too will gain added interest. Primarily due to the fact that these are not reprints. They are unique in the fact that DC sanctioned what could effectively be seen as more than an 80 page Giant (some I believe have these in them!!). It's opened new avenues as a collector and puts me I suppose in a frame of 'Historian'. Imagine, these books could contain gems which are out of reach for a lot of collectors. Original cover or not, the original story pages are there!

What a wonderful thing comics are!!!

Regards,
Des

(Desmond Jukes / United Kingdom / fortunefaded72@hotmail.com)

Des is definitely right in that comics are a wonderful thing! There are the beginnings of a Alan Class publications revival at eBay.com (USA), as can be seen in that there are currently 10 auction listings listed

Thank you Des for bringing these updates to our attention, and your permission to post them in this blog!!

We at Make It So Marketing usually have several of the original publications the Alan Class reprints reproduced for sale in our eBay Featured Store. However they are not categorized (separated) as Alan Class source materials. You would have to just search our listings. To do so just click on the top right comic book cover to view all of our store listings to see if we have it in stock for you.
