Conan The Barbarian's Creator
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Comic Book History

Robert E Howard....

... was portrayed in a recent film called 'The Whole Wide World' (1996).
I thought I knew a lot about Robert E Howard, (REH), but this movie added another facet to his life.
The movie is about a Texas school teacher,(Renee Zellweger), who has been dabling with writing while teaching school.
Her old boyfriend introduces her to REH, and she is drawn romantically to him.
However REH is an idiosyncratic writer, (played by Vincent D'Onofrio), of pulp action / adventure / fantasy /horror tales. Actually he describes himself as the 'greatest pulp writer of all'.
However the romance that Novalyn, (the school teacher), wants with REH doesn't go anywere because of REH's Oedipal attachment to his convalescent mother.
Add to that problem that REH has some other emotional troubles, such as his attitude towards women, and that he doesn't want to be tied down.  Yet he is tied down to his mother, who he could afford to have a home nurse care for, due to all the money he makes writing pulp stories!!
This is definitely an offbeat romantic movie that was based on the memoir "One Who Walked Alone". The book was written by Novalyne Price at 76 years of age about her brief affair with "Conan the Barbarian" creator Robert E. Howard, (REH) in the early 1930's.
Tina wanted to watch this for the romantic aspect of the movie, not realizing who it was about. I was thrilled to see it was about REH, who besides creating Conan, also created Solomon Kane, Kull the Conqueror, and Red Sonja!!!
Recommended viewing for those that love REH's works, and you can 'sneak' this DVD in as a 'chick flick' to watch with your loved one besides! LOL !

Saturday Morning and...

Yes... Saturday Morning Cartoons Are Coming Soon!

Ok,in a couple of days the kids are through with school for the week.  And several of them will be looking for things to do, other than their homework of course!!

Years ago I remember the 1967-68 year cartoon season when ABC had on some decent cartoons for all ages!

Their Saturday morning lineup include the Fantastic Four, Casper the Friendly Ghost, King Kong, the Amazing Spider-Man, George of the Jungle, and Journey to the Center of the Earth!

ABC TV and Marvel Comics co-published a one-shot GIANT-SIZED comic book to promote that season.

It was cover priced at 25 cents! The price of standard sized comics at the time was only 12 cents.  Today this comic book would be worth approximately $95.00 in Near Mint (NM) unslabbed (not 3rd party graded) condition.

Just imagine if you had bought a copy and had kept it protected all these years. What an investment from one thin quarter!

The company that printed this promo comic for ABC was 'Marvel Comics'. By 1967 Stan Lee had come up with several superheroes for his publisher Martin Goodman.

The Fantastic Four originated in 1961 and were written by Stan Lee and pencilled by co-creator Jack Kirby.

The series created by these two have given me great enjoyment for 46 years.  Thank you Stan & Jack

For those interested in checking out the Fantastic Four comics run we have several unslabbed and CGC graded comics listed in our eBay Featured Store .

Thank YOU Blog Readers

For the 15,000 Visits

Since July 15th 2006 !

In an earlier blog post this week we posted that it was projected we would hit the 15,000 benchmark when we were not on-line.

Well, it happened late last night, at 11:17 p.m. PST, when a blog reader from Hong Kong became our 15,000th visitor!!

Although we started blogging here on eBay on June 7th, 2006, we didn't add on a visitor/stats counter until July 15th, after seeing another blogger rave about how their stats counter was working for them!

Checking out the benefits of having HitCounter we installed it at the bottom of our comics blog posts immediately! Which is good, because we have a LOT more visitors that only view the posts and don't comment!

We are taking the time now to THANK YOU for visiting our endeavors either now or in the past!

This blogging each day has turned into so much fun, that we have added our blog posts to a domain name specifically created for promoting our eBay Featured Store, our current and past pop culture interests, plus our comic book collecting insights at:

www.ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com

Our main purpose for this eBay Blog and our Domain Name Blog is to promote interest in comic books and their history, comic book movies, 'Our Takes' on sci-fi tv shows that we have interest in, upcoming sci-fi movies, pop culture and comic book conventions, or other pop culture items to a mainstream audience as well as comic book fanatics! Whew! And we even throw in 'Our Take' on American Idol results in season!!!

After getting you or the other blog readers interested in the above topics, we keep approximately 2,000+ items listed in our eBay Featured (Premium) Store  to satisfy your newly awakened desire for those items!!

Thanks for viewing this pop culture - comics - comic books blog post! Check out the pictures shown on this blog post to see items we have listed, or previous blog posts about those shows, and feel free to comment below!

Thanks again!

The Pictures to the Left give you a BIG Clue!!

I blogged earlier how I love this time of year when there are upcoming TV Shows that I am eager to see!

One of my All-Time Favorites was the Green Hornet TV Show of 1966-67.  Another was watching the Lone Ranger half hour shows of the late 1950's.

Would you believe that Britt Reid, (aka Green Hornet), was related to the Lone Ranger??   He was the grand-nephew of the Lone Ranger (also a Reid) !   No Kidding!!  Check out their histories when you get a chance!  Their relationship is why I titled this blog post the way I did asking what 'Silver' and  'Black Beauty' had in common! Answer: They were both owned and ridden by a 'Reid'!

I also posted earlier about the Green Hornet Gold Key comic books based on the TV Show.  In comparison one of the most popular Dell Comics titles for collectors  are the Lone Ranger Comics run.  The Dell Comic Book title ran for 145 issues from January 1948 to May 1962.

The photo covers with Clayton Moore are the main reason for this title's popularity, (see comic book cover to the top left for example).

Growing up in the 1950's I watched a lot of westerns on TV.   I didn't get to see many movies until the mid 1960's as they cost  money and I was buying comics for my entertainment with my allowance.

However I did get to see the TV show with Clayton Moore which originally ran from 1950 - 1957. There was a break after two years of show where Clayton had a salary dispute and he was temporarily replaced. That I don't really remember, but found that out while researching for this blog post.

I didn't see the two feature films starring Clayton and Jay Silverheels, the last one being released in 1959. Clayton basically left acting after that and spent several years in public appearances as the Lone Ranger.

My main interest in the Lone Ranger was his TV show and the comics.  I would put him up there with Roy Rogers, and  Gene Autry, as three of my personal standout late 1950's cowboy heroes.

Clayton passed away in 1999, but his work as the Lone Ranger lives on in TV reruns and DVDs, especially now that so many households have DVD players and the cost of the DVD TV episodes have become so reasonably priced!

For those interested in the Lone Ranger Comics run and other Western Comics, we have several listed in our eBay Featured Store.  The Lone Ranger issues usually are picked up pretty quick though pardner!!

Thanks for reading this pop culture - comics -comic book blog post, and feel free to post your thoughts / memories / etc. below!!
