From the Sci-Fi Channel TV Show

Who Wants To Be A Superhero?

Season Two

Basura !

'My Take' On This Super-Hero !

This is 'My Take' on One of the Ten Contestants from this SCI-FI Channel Mini-Series that was seen on Thursday nights at 9 p.m. this summer!

The latest season ended on September 7th! Tina and I are looking forward to a Season 3!

For those new to our blog, we have been watching this show since the Preview of it at the San Diego Comic Con International in July 2006, watched the full First season, caught the Preview at the 2007 SDCC and just finished viewing the Grand Finale of the Second Season this past week!

Why?  Because this is an actual fun and entertaining reality show!

This blog post is about Basura, who was asked to turn in her costume in Episode 4.

These observations are from her screen time on the show, her 'After Show' 7:14 minutes with Feedback, and some other videos.

Basura came to the 'After Show' with flowers in her hair, which was kind of funny, because she came across as more of a 'Kick-Ass' kind of superhero on the show!

She thought she was eliminated because she sensed things but did not act upn them.

She thought The Defuser should have been eliminated instead of her. He doesn't need the 'limelight' like the others do, she said.

She liked her proposed comic book cover. It stood apart from the others she said. It had a different style, and she was pumped up with muscles!

Basuras secret identity is that of Aja De Coudreaux. She is a 27 year old artist in real life.

Basura's super powers: Communicates with and is aided by insects of all kinds. she trains small animlas to assist her. She turns trash into treasure and reshapes rubbish into robots!

Surprising how I liked her looks, as I don't like insects...

Her catch phrase is:  "Looks Like It's Gonna Get Messy!"

Aja's choice of 'Basura' as her superhero name was a last minute choice! It was going to be 'Super Trash Girl' !!

On Feedback's 'After Show' she stated she was pleased that she made it half-way thru the competition at least!

Upon being asked who she thought would be Stan's final choice... she said Hygena or Whip-Snap.

However she also thought that Parthenon could make it all the way... His costume makeover was the best!

To her Hyper-Strike was amazing...

Tina wasn't for this super-hero one way or the other... for me she looked 'hotter' after the costume revision, but just didn't stand out in the crowd when the missions were underway.

Good luck to her in her secret identity!

Thanks for reading this popular culture - comics - comic books blog post and check back with us for some more after show thoughts on Season 2 in the near future!

'Giant-Size CHiLLeRs' ?

The CCA (Comics Code Authority) relaxed the rules on HoRRoR comics in 1971. There had been a virtual ban against vampires since the mid 1950's when the whole industry had come across scrutiny by the U.S. Congress.

The comics industry became self regulated when the CCA was instituted and comics were drastically censored. I have blogged about this period in previous posts.

Comics hit a low point during this period, many publishers went out of business, and others barely survived, including 'Atlas Comics' the predecessor to Marvel Comics.

When the CCA relaxed the rules, Marvel started testing the boundaries with 'Morbius' in the Amazing Spider-Man. Morbius was a 'quasi-vampire', and sales showed there was interest in that type of story.

Marvel thus decided to publish a HoRRoR comic book series, and decided to use a character that was in the public domain, that of Count Dracula.

Thus the 'Tomb of Dracula' was published by Marvel Comics from April 1972 to August 1979 as a color comic book.

It was so popular that other series like the one to the top right were started, 'Giant-Size Chillers' Featuring Dracula of course from June 1974! Click on that cover to see what HoRRoR / MoNSTer Comics we have listed for sale!

P.S. These are actually pretty tame compared to what movies are like today!

Jim Steranko Produced Some of the Best Pop Art In the 1960's on a James Bond Type of Comic Book !

Nick Fury, (of WWII Sgt Fury & His Howling Commandos comics history), was updated in the 1960's as a James Bond spy thriller type of comic book.

It was co-created by Jack Kirby, who started several strips, and then the strip would be handed off to other artists.

Jim Steranko was a relative newcomer to the comics scene when he started his work on Nicky Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. His artwork was given a free hand, and he produced many memorable scenes inside and on the covers of these comics.

The cover to the top left is a 'classic flag cover', and just one of the many covers that collectors today go for!  We have sold several of this strip including the one to the middle left column that was CGC'd.

Others have worked on the strip, which has had a few different series  printed since the 1960's, but Jim Steranko's work is still considered to be the finest!

For those interested in comic books about  Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD, we have a few in our eBay Featured Store!  Plus we also have the earlier strip titled 'Sgt Fury and His Howling Commandos!
