THE HOUR IS LATE....

...but we have plenty to read because we have several 'Ghost Stories', 'Ghostly Tales', 'Ghosts', 'Ghost Manor', 'Many Ghosts Of Doctor Graves', and other tales!

One of the best HoRRoR Comic Book Titles  was 'Ghost Stories' from Dell Comics.

You know Dell Comics... 'Dell Comics Are Good Comics'... how they went to HoRRoR comics from that tag line remains a mystery to me....???

The Ghost Stories series ran for 37 issues from September 1962 to October 1973.

The series started when mystery and suspense shows were hot on TV, as with Gold Key's Boris Karloff Thriller and Rod Serling's Twilight Zone!

A history note:  Dell Comics did not submit their comics to the CCA, (Comics Code Authority), after other publishers in the mid 1950's did a form of self censorship. So to run a HoRRoR story anthology comic in the early 1960's was an oddity for this company.

The comics in this run are tame compared to those from EC Comics of the early 1950's, but stand up to time when reading today.

Good reading for those that like HoRRoR comics but without all the grim and gritty gore that some publishers print today.

I would recommend this series to those that would like a good mystery read. For you collectors out there, there are not that many high grade copies of this series on the CGC Census, as these comics were not generally stored away properly.  Buy 'em while you can!

Anthro... Could It Be YOU?

Anthro was an unusual DC Comics Comic Book Character!

Anthro first appeared in Showcase #74 in May of 1968.

After this one-shot appearance in DC's try-out title, cartoonist Howie Post got the go-ahead to start the series in its' own title.  It ran from 1968-69 for six issues before being cancelled!

Who was Anthro?

He was the first Cro-Magnon boy born in the Stone Age. His father, a Neanderthral caveman, was the Chief of his tribe.

His mother is the captive member from another tribe.

Anthro won two competing cavegirls who became his wives. One bore his child, beginning the 'human' race!

Whew!  That is some start of a series isn't it???

Maybe a little too intellectual for the time, and not enough 'action'.

Additionally, Howie Post's art was a little 'cartoony', although I personally liked it.

The 'hook' of the series was this could be YOUR ancestor you were reading about!

No, Not The TV Show 'Heroes'...

But Wally Wood's Heroes!

This was a two-issue comic book title that represented one of the earliest known efforts of 'independent' comics!

The first issue was self-published by  Wally Wood in 1969, with another issue published by CPL Publications in 1976.

This comic book was an 'in-between' publication, in that it bridged the gap between underground comix and the more 'mainstream' Marvel and DC Comics publications of the time.

This original one-shot comic attempted to provide mature genre stories for an adult audience. It could be considered a forerunner of the late-1970s modern graphic novel!

The one-shot was actually created for the 'armed forces' readership that Wally Wood had cultivated with his "Sally Forth" feature in Military News and Overseas Weekly.

The first issue, pictured to the top left, contained no U.S. Postal Service indicia.

Additionally it was higher priced, set at 15 cents cover price, NOT the 12 cents cover that other comics of the time were priced at.

As Wally's target market was NOT children,  it wasn't submitted to the CCA and thus had no Comics Code Seal on the cover!

Aimed at an older audience, the comic contained more 'action' violence and more 'revealing' clothing on the illustrated nubile young women than did mainstream comics of the day!

However, it was not 'grim and gritty'. It did not contain nudity or gore. Most of the deaths illustrated occurred in silhouette or off-panel.

The blaring comic book cover itself did promote "Amazing Adult Adventure" within its' pages, but it is far milder than today's comics!

That's What I Did!

I am proud to admit that I was a 'Quantum Leaper'!

Indeed, I attended the first Quantum Leap Convention held by Creation Entertainment in  Los Angeles years ago.

I then attended each sucessive one that the QL Fans put on in LA, Pasadena & Burbank. Why?  Because it was great knowing I wasn't the only one that thought  QL was great and I could share that experience with hundreds if not thousands of others !!!!

I bought all the QL fan magazines, and there were at least four that ran for a few years! Plus the fan fiction, some of that was really strange, especially when they cross overed with other TV Shows!

Naturally, being a comic book collector, I bought all the Quantum Leap Comics as they came out, and picked up extras for the stars to sign at the cons, and the artists and writer of the comics. The comic book series ran for 13 issues, plus one special reprint, and an annual. The comic book started in September 1991 and ended August 1993.

I really miss those QL Conventions, they were jam packed with actors and actresses that had guest starred on the TV show and it was great meeting them and the two featured stars at the con each year!! .
