YES, Finally.... It's On DVD !

'Robinson Crusoe On Mars'! This ONE I have been waiting for!

I saw it as a twelve year old up on Kodiak Island, Alaska at the Navy Base's large screen theater.

At Kodiak Island we had like one TV station that we could get reception for!  So during the 3 years my dad was stationed there, I did see several movies as well as collect comics!

This movie had vivid scenes, and was a great story! It was one of my first Sci-Fi movies and probably one of the reasons why this film genre is still one of my favorites today!

Plus, you gotta place it in time... in 1964 it was still 5 years before Neil Armstrong stepped on the Moon.  The USA and the Soviet Union were racing for that goal, so something set on Mars was really Sci-Fi !

For those that have never seen it, 'Robinson Crusoe on Mars' was a 1964 science fiction film 'retelling' of the classic novel by Daniel Defoe, except it was set on the Planet Mars instead of an island on Earth!

It was fantastically directed by Byron Haskin, and produced by Aubrey Schenck.

The big thing to me as a kid was that storyline was fantastic! There was no need for blood, gore and HoRRoR scenes in this film to get the storyline across!

The film also starred some great acting by actors Paul Mantee, Victor Lundin and Adam West (who of course two years later went on to become TV's Batman!).

This may seem like an oddball film with the title of the movie as it is, but there are many Sci-Fi fans that have been waiting for this film to appear on DVD!

Originally in the 'Lower 48 States', this film was paired with other drive-in fare, but don't miss it because of that! 

This DVD has been released as a 'Special Edition' on September 18th. Not to be missed!

Yesterday We Went To The San Diego Zoo!

Usually by the time we get to the Polar Bear Plunge, the bears are all tired out and resting...

Yesterday we took the tram over first thing in the morning and arrived at the far end of the Zoo first thing!

There were two bears out, one playing with a rubber ball and another with a large white bone.

We enjoyed their antics, but also remembered hearing on the evening news this past week that polar bears out in the wild are losing their homes due to the Artic Ice Cap melting away...

I worked at the San Diego Zoo during my college days.

There wasn't a 'Plunge' for the Polar Bears at that time. The two bears they had then were in the old style enclosure. 

Hopefully something can be done for the ones still in the wild...

Actually when I worked at the Zoo years ago, my favorite animals/birds at the Zoo were the penguins!

I would go down on lunch break and see them.... from Rock Penguins to Emperor Penguins.

After I stopped working there, all the Penguins were take to the Penguin Encounter at Sea World in San Diego, so the Zoo no longer has any to see!

Maybe I liked penguins so much because when I was a really little kid, one my my favorite cartoons on TV was that of Chilly Willy! 

I have blogged previously about my fondness for Chilly Willy Comics like the one to middle left column.

Those are few in number and increasingly hard to find in decent shape!

So if you're ever in San Diego area, be sure to check out the Polar Bear Plunge early in the morning at the Zoo!

So far on eBay they only show one up for sale by our competitors with a 9.8 grade and they are asking $699.00 for it with a 'Best Offer' option!  They had the first CGC Graded copy listed at 9.8 on eBay which has not sold yet as of today...

However one CGC graded issue has closed on auction format for $82.99 on September 9th with 8 bids from 5 bidders! So with the season premiere this upcoming Monday night, we figure this will be a hot item!!
