San Diego Comic Con 1973

Stan Lee?

I have published my photo of me at the San Diego Comic Con from 1973 several times before in previous blog posts and on the web site.

I have also published a few excerpts from my story of my personal history with the Con, back when it was known as 'The Golden State Comic Con' in 1970 at the U.S. Grant Hotel.

It then became known as 'San Diego's West Coast Comic Con in 1972 while at the El Cortez Hotel.

The con ended up as the 'San Diego Comic Con' in 1973 at the Sheraton Hotel, keeping that name until 1995 when it started going by 'Comic Con International'.

However in 1973 there were only approximately 1,100 of us in attendance.

I had set up a table by myself to sell at this Con, and thus was not able to break away for the programs or to even meet all the pros!

It appears I must have missed Neal Adams, June Foray, Jack Kirby, Carmine Infantino, DC Fontana, and now even Stan Lee!

That's right!Even tho I was there... I don't recall meeting all of these celebrities and pros at that time! I did meet them in later years tho!

I am so glad that nowadays, going on 35 years later, that Tina and I make a good team in standing in line for each other, or attending one program while another one is running that we are interested in!

And no, I gave up setting up a booth at the Con years ago!

I have much more fun now buying and attending programs so I don't miss the pros or celebs!!

Thanks for reading our pop culture - comics - comic book blog post!

Michael

Dressing Up For The Convention As...

Black Lightning!

One of the fun things to do at pop culture or comic book conventions is to either dress up like your favorite comic book character or TV Show / Movie Star...

Well, the SDCC Comic Con 2007 attendee to the top left did just that!

I know, I know... I've been accused of having a fixation for Halle Berry in her Catwoman outfit, after all of the Catwoman blog posts here in this blog!

So for a change, here is another  DC Comics superhero that may or may not be recognizable to most of you!  And it's a guy this time!

Black Lightning was one of the first African-American Superheroes to be published in mainstream comics!

We'll publish other pics in the weeks to come before the Con Season starts... and if you have a pic to share feel free to tell us about it for possible publishing in this blog!

Oh.... Tina swears she'll be in costume at one of the upcoming Cons, so I'll keep you posted for that development!!

Thanks for reading our pop culture - comics - comic book blog post!

So for a change, here is another DC Comics superheroine, that of Power Girl, who is a Fanboy Favorite due to .... well her obvious attributes!

This attendee really pulls the impersonation off, as she is definitely filling out the costume as shown in the comics!

And they say that superheroines' figures are over exagerated in the comics!

Sheeeeeshhhh!

Oh.... Tina swears she'll be in costume at one of the upcoming Cons, so I'll keep you posted for that development!!

The Julie Newmar & Halle Berry As 'Catwoman'

Blog Post

...that we first posted on March 11th 2007!

Since then eBay techs have gone in and changed the blog format, thus causing most of our pre September 15th 2007 blog posts to be distorted in viewing.

However this doesn't stop new bloggers from finding and attempting to read our original post at least once a day!

Thus I am re-posting this blog post and will be referencing it for future email communications on this subject.

The following are my thoughts of the 2004 Catwoman Movie:

The 2004 movie was trashed from when it was first released until it slinked out of the first run theaters... I think the biggest problem was that there wasn't any Batman in the movie... we just had two great looking women, Halle Berry and Sharon Stone, and a lame script that didn't place Catwoman into Batman's Universe.

However I do think the best role in the movie was Halle Berry as the Catwoman.  I have seen her at a feature program at the SDCC where there were a lot of Batman fans and she was able to take them on and answer all questions about her role in the Catwoman movie.

Another Catwoman was Julie Newmar who I blogged about previously here.  I showed a picture of her and Yvonne Craig (Batgirl) from the 1996 San Diego Comic Con (SDCC).  She portrayed a more 'classy' Catwoman, one with more demure assets and attitude.  There has been a BIG difference between the portrayals of the 1960's & 2000's Catwomen.

(continued next column)

Julie Newmar - 1966's Catwoman On The Batman TV Show

Halle Berry  - 2004's Catwoman in the Theatrical Movie

(continued from previous column)

I blame that on the 'Grim and Gritty' writing that has crept into comic books since the 1980's.  Comics that you used to be able to have 8 -15 year olds read are no longer suitable for that age group.... and the comics industry wants to know where their younger readers are !!!

For those interested in Batman comic books, some of which feature Catwoman, we have several for sale in our eBay Featured Store.

Thanks for reading our blog re-post, hopefully the techs won't make another format change....

Phil Stacey & The Mile High Orchestra ???

That made me take a double look!

Was reading a local magazine of what events are happening in San Diego County and came across that headline!

Regular readers of our blog will know that we blog each week during American Idol's Season as to 'Our Take' on the performances.

Phil Stacey was last blogged about on May 3rd, 2007 when he left in a 'Blaze of Glory'...  click here to see that post!

Tina and I have been watching the 'Next Great American Band' TV Show on Friday nights for the past 8 weeks and been blogging about those performances...click here to see the latest post!

But it is DENVER & the Mile High Orchestra, NOT Phil Stacey & the MHO!

So the ad caught my attention because I knew both names and seemed incorrect.

Appears that both bands will be appearing in La Mesa, California on December 21st at 6pm and 8pm!

San Diego must be a good place for American Idol performers to appear, as Chris Daughtry's band was here recently also...

Thanks for reading this popular culture - comics - comic books blog post!

Michael
