Two Thumbs Up So Far....

For All The Trailers and Pics  Being Released From The Upcoming Iron Man Film

We are getting ready for the last day of the calendar year 2007 with the last of the shipping to go out before the Post Office closes early!

We are definitely looking forward to 2008, as one of the reasons is because of the upcoming IRON MAN movie being released in May 2008!

Tina and I enjoyed seeing the Iron Man cast appear at the San Diego Comic Con in July, and the teaser trailer that was shown TWICE there due to audience demand!

Iron Man has never had a live action movie before, so this is an exciting waiting period for Iron Man fans!

We are having a hard time restocking Iron Man comics for sale as there is a high demand for back issues right now including issue #163 of all things!

Thanks for reading this popular culture - comics - comic books blog post!

At this time of year it is fun to look back and see what transpired in the last year.
With that thought in mind I was getting our next blog post ready as we are nearing 45,000 visitors to this blog, and was checking what new visitors were reading via the stats.
This blog post was one of the archived ones that was just read and it reminded me that I should update it for the new blog format.  So here it is as I look back at years ago and this past year!
Pictured above is the comic book that started it all for me!  Thanks Stan, Jack and Dick!

Me Collecting Comic Books!

The publication  was 'Journey Into Mystery' #72 from Atlas Comics, (Atlas evolved into what we know as Marvel Comics today).

Before I was given this comic book, all I had been reading were 'funnybooks' with an occasional National (Superman) comic book thrown in.

Journey Into Mystery #72 was cover dated September 1961, which would have made me nine years old.  The title had started with issue #1 in June of 1952, which would have been a month older than I was.

What made this one issue stand out enough to make me start collecting comic books???

It was the artwork that did it for me. It was when I first truly realized that it was real people that drew these comics, in this case they were Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers, who signed their work 'Kirby/Ayers'.

Before this comic, all that I was aware of were the 'cookie cutter' artwork in funnybooks of Chilly Willy, Woody Woodpecker, Mickey Mouse, etc.  The art from one artist to another was almost indistinguishable, and no one signed their names to the artwork...

However the artwork of this Journey Into Mystery was so far different from what I was used to, that I immediately looked for more by the Kirby/Ayers team and kept the book in better shape!

I didn't have too long to wait... as Kirby drew Fantastic Four #1 for the November 1961 cover date, which I picked up after seeing Fantastic Four #3 from March 1962 where the FF wore costumes for the first time!

It was unusual that this comic was given to me as it was a 'monster' comic, which probably would have been thought to give me 'nightmares', but I am glad that it was given to me and that it started my lifelong collecting bug of collecting comics!!!

I was fortunate to meet Jack Kirby at the SDCC before he passed away, and to have met Dick Ayers at Wonder-Con and the SDCC a few times through the years.  They were definitely the great guys I thought them to be when I was a kid!!  Thanks Jack and Dick for the memories !!

For those interested in seeing more Jack Kirby comics, we have several in our eBay Featured Store!  Thanks for reading !!

SUPERMAN That Is!

We have been posting pics of fans that have stood out in costumes at different cons during the past years...

As one of the fun things to do at pop culture or comic book conventions is to either dress up like your favorite comic book character or TV Show / Movie Star...

The Superman fan to the top left came well dressed for the part!

It is great that more and more fans are coming to the cons dressed up, and not just for the masquerades shows!

We'll be sure to post more pics this upcoming convention season!

Thanks for reading our pop culture - comics - comic book blog post!

Sharon Blair As 'Synn'

of

 FemForce!

Femforce is a comic book title that has been published by A.C. Comics since 1985!

FemForce details the adventures of the titular team: the 'Federal Emergency Missions Force', also known as "Femforce".

Some of the members are original creations, while others originated in the 1940s and 50s. The older characters had lapsed into 'public domain' by the time Femforce was published.

The team members are all female Superheroes, and are the first and the longest running all-women 'super-team' in comics!

I didn't normally read this title, however the issue #51 was drawn by Dick Ayers, (of Fantastic Four, Sgt Fury, etc. fame).

Plus the model / actress who portrayed Synn on the cover of the issue was there at the Comic Con. So I had Sharon Blair personalize it to me!

Synn's real name in the comic book series was Silva Synn. Her powers included illusions, flight, and matter manipulation. She was an original character, not one of the public domain ones.

It Must Be That Time Of Year Again!

Our Most Popular Archived Blog Post today is our January 14th 2007 blog post published as follows:

"Watching Ebert and Roeper's Top Ten Worst Movies of 2006 tonight, and found that Uma Thurman's 'My Super Ex-Girl Friend' was listed as number seven of the worst of 2006 by Michael Phillips, (filling in for Ebert).

I first reported on this movie in our blog post of December 20th, 2006.

You can check out my comments on the movie at that post at: Review

I find it funny that it is listed as one of the TOP TEN WORST MOVIES of 2006. I didn't find it to be that bad !!

For those interested in  Movie or TV show comics, we have several comic books based on Movies orTV shows in our eBay Featured Store."

Wonder what movies will be the 'Worst of 2007"? I'll check and see if any movies we reviewed are on the list... Thanks for reading this pop culture - comics - comic book blog post!

Michael
