Forbidden Kingdom

With Jackie Chan AND Jet Li!

Today, April 18th is the release date for Jackie Chan's movie!

Also headlining with Jackie is Jet Li!

The film is about an American teen who travels back to ancient China to join a crew of warriors who are on a quest to free the imprisoned 'Monkey King'!

Say What???!!!

We have watched 'The Myth', one of Jackie's recent films and this sounds like a similar time travel pic.

However it is Jackie and with Jet Li, it's gotta be at least watchable... if not good!

We also have an ongoing comics and pop culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

Thanks for reading this popular culture - comics - comic books blog post and come back again!

Jim Mooney... More Than Just...

Jim Mooney...

More Than Just THE Supergirl Artist!

Jim Mooney 1919-2008

My earlier blog post was just a brief one, as I had just found out that Jim had passed while we were back East for a funeral, and had missed seeing it.

Jim Mooney had basically been a DC comic book artist during my early years of reading comics (late 1950's - early 1960's).

During that time DC had an unofficail 'policy' of not publishing the writers or artists credits on their published comic pages.

So for years myself and countless others would not always know who drew what until we found out their name somewhere and figured out their style. It was hard figuring out DC artists as DC wanted a 'house style' of art. (Indeed, when Jack Kirby came over in the early 1970's DC had his Superman's faces redrawn to fit the 'house style'!)

Jim drew the Supergirl feature from approx 1959 - 1968 for National / DC among other strips.

When Jim left DC Comics in 1968, he went back to work for Stan Lee who had him 'inking' the pencils on the Amazing Spider-Man comic book as well as other Marvel Comics, including The Avengers, The Fantastic Four and other inking jobs at first. I enjoyed his inking style.

Jim later collaborated with Steve Gerber and penciled the Man-Thing and Omega The Unknown comics that Steve wrote.

I didn't see Jim at the last couple of SDCCs as that Convention takes up the whole two wings of the San Diego Convention Center!

I remember him more like he was in the late 1990's as shown at the top right photo.

To those of you new to us, we have an ongoing pop culture - comics convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

Supergirl's Artist Passes....

'THE' Supergirl's Artist Passes....

Jim Mooney 1919-2008

Reading this past Sunday's Newspaper Comic Strips I saw one that reminded me of a Great Comic Book Artist.

It was the Funky Winkerbean comic strip which showed Supergirl landing on earth for the first time.

That made me think of Jim Mooney who is 'THE' comic book artist most associated with drawing her during the Silver Age of Comics!

I had met Jim at a few Comic Cons during the years, and always smiled at his signature where he would draw a 'moon' into his signature!

Unfortunately it appeared that he passed away March 30th, 2008 when Tina and I were back East for her Aunt's funeral.

Did not know about Jim's passing until today...

This is why I publish blog posts about who I/we meet at comic cons, because I like to 'recognize' them in our blog so that other comics readers / fans / collectors or just mainstream folk can appreciate their work while they are still living!

To those of you new to us, we have an ongoing pop culture - comics convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

What Do People Earn?

What Do People Earn?

Last Sunday's Parade Magazine published it's 'What People Earn' special issue.

I briefly glanced at it, but Tina picked up on a photo run on the bottom of page 9 and brought it to my attention.

There was the photo and the following caption: 'Elizabeth Moisant, 73, Comic-book publisher, Oak Park, IL $110,000

Well, I had never heard of her, and since she is older than me and I love comics history, I thought I should have recognized her name.

So after Googling her to no avail, (there was an actress by that name only - one film), I set out in earnest to find out who she was!

The only comic book publisher I could find in that area of Illinois was Silver Phoenix Publishing.

However their web site made no mention of Elizabeth, but rather a Charles D Moisant, who "was  once dubbed the craziest man in comics"...

Ok... well, I then saw the company's logo which is of course a Silver Phoenix, and shown on a pendant in the web site's store page.

The photo run in the Parade Magazine publication was only a 'head shot,' but the top right photo where the pic was taken from was a full upper body shot.

That more detailed photo showed Elizabeth was wearing a similar phoenix pendant!

Mystery solved!  Whew! Now I know her connection to the comics industry!

Time To 'Bring On The Bad Guys'!!

Time To

'Bring On The Bad Guys'!

Back in the mid 1970's Marvel became the most 'popular' comic books publisher.

For those that missed the earlier issues of their comics, Marvel started reprinting the earlier stories.

An idea came up to have the comic pages printed in softcover book format, and thus the Fireside series of books came into being!

'Bring On The Bad Guys' was one of those books in the series.

Because what would a Superhero be without a Supervillain?!

So Stan Lee wrote an introduction explaining why and how the Supervillains came to be, and the book included Doctor Doom, the Green Goblin, the Red Skull, Loki, Dormmamu, Mephisto, and the Abomination!

Question is, who were the Superheroes they first tangled with? Because that first happened way back in the 1960's!

For those new to us, we have an ongoing comic and pop culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale! Check us out again!
