It Is The Comics Blogosphere!
Mood:  caffeinated
Topic: Comic Cons

It Is The Comics Blogosphere!

As Discussed At The 2008 SDCC Comic Con International!

This special program was held on the first day of the 2008 San Diego Comic Con International.

It was held in Room 32AB, which is one of the smaller medium sized meeting rooms at the San Diego Convention Center. Attendance was light...

However the hour from 6:00-7:00 PM went very fast for this panel, which was called "The Comics Blogosphere".

The panel was a presentation to have each of the panelists explain their part in the blog explosion, which has opened up a new frontier for comics criticism.

The panelists from left to right in the photos were:

The moderator Douglas Wolk (blogs: Reading Comics).

Tim Robins (blogs: Mindless Ones).

Laura Hudson (blogs: Myriad Issues).

Jeff Lester (blogs: The Savage Critic(s)).

David Brothers (blogs: 4thletter!).

Douglas's main point during the program was that "Letter columns don't exist any more either!" (Regarding comic books dropping their letter pages in lieu of another ad or story page.)

Tony stated that 'fanzines are dead'.  Worst thing on internet for him is that "there is a lot of flaming going on".  He enjoys blogging, because his writing style is more essay-like. His big point was that he has been involved in Dr Who fandom for 20 years but never was asked to be on a panel until his blog on comics appeared!

Laura grew up online, got interested in comics, and blogging was a natural outgrowth for her as she is pretty opionated she said!

Jeff Lester was the webmaster for Brian Hibbs' online comic store. Brian was doing the blogging at first, but Jeff started posting a few blogs, and then ended up getting opionated, and wanted to get credit for his opinions!

David Brothers started off in fan fiction. The blogging format was a natural evolution for him.

When Laura mentioned she checked her stats on a regular basis that piqued my interest.

So I asked the panel at the Q & A session what their traffic was like. None of the 5 panelists really wanted to discuss their number of visitors, page views, etc.  It would appear from their answers that blogging still has a ways to go to hit  larger numbers of viewership! However these five panelists are just a few of the hundreds of comics fans that are blogging!

Thanks for reading this blog post today and please join us again for more!

The Harvey Awards Will Be Presented...

The Harvey Awards Will Be Presented...

At The 2008 Baltimore Comic Con

 On September 27th!

This morning I received notification in my Facebook account from Charles Edward Sellner, that Visionary Studios will be attending the upcoming Baltimore Comic Con that runs from September 27th to 28th, 2008.

The Visionary Studio members will have a booth and also host a panel where they will be discussing their upcoming projects.

This notice from Sellner reminded me that I have not yet blogged about another facet of the Baltimore Comic Con, and that is that the 'Harvey Awards' are distributed at this Comic Con.

The Harvey Awards were named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman. He was one of the industry's most innovative talents, of whom I have blogged about before.

The Harveys recognize outstanding achievements in over 20 categories in comics and sequential art, ranging from Best Artist to the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame.

They are the only industry awards both nominated by and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

If you are in the area, you might want to check out the Baltimore Comic Con that features the Visionary Studios booth / panel and the Harvey Awards.

Additional Featured Guests scheduled to appear are:  Bernie Wrightson, Mike Mignola, Geoff Johns, Herb Trimpe, Gene Colan, Jim Shooter, Howard Chaykin, Tim Sale... and more!

Check the Con's web site at comicon.com/baltimore!

~ Michael

We won't be able to attend this Comic Con, but we do have our own listings in our online store for sale by clicking here!

Above is one of the prized Harvey Awards Statues that is representative of the ones to be distributed at the upcoming Harvey Awards Banquet on September 27th 2008. Please Note: The Banquet is on the 27th, but the Baltimore Comic Con runs both days, September 27th & 28th!

The Harvey Awards Banquet will be honoring the 2008 Harvey Award Nominees and Winners with a cocktail hour, (cash bar), a steak and crabcake dinner, dessert, and the Award Ceremony hosted by Master of Ceremonies Kyle Baker. The ticket cost for the banquet alone is $90.00 which also includes a 'Hollywood-style' Gift Bag with many great items for Comics Fans. For more info on this event and the contents of the gift bag, check out HarveyAwards.org !

New To The Works Of Jack Kirby?

New To The Works Of Jack Kirby?

Then Take A Look At 'The Jack Kirby Collector'!

Yesterday I blogged about seeing Joe Ruby and Ken Spears at the July 2008 SDCC - San Diego Comic Con International.

I was blogging about Jack's years at Ruby-Spears Productions where he came up with many concepts, several of which made it to animated shows being aired on TV.

The responses and emails about the blog post ran from "Thanks for blogging about Jack", to "I didn't know that about Kirby", to "How do you find out more about what Kirby?".

One of the great publications that is still being published is the 'Jack Kirby Collector', published by TwoMorrows Publishing.

I was an early subscriber to this magazine, and added those issues to my own personal Kirby Collection.

For those of you that want to know more about Jack Kirby, and can't attend the Annual Jack Kirby Tribute at the SD Comic Con, this publication is a great way of reading about the different periods in Jack's life.

The publisher has the latest issues in stock at their web site.

For those that just want to read the OOP, (Out of Print), issues of the magazine, (not collect), The earliest issues have been compiled into 'The Collected Jack Kirby Collector' TPB format.

The earliest issues are OOP and have to be purchased on the resale market. If you cannot find them at your regular shop, my wife and I have several copies of these in our online store.

There should not be any reason to miss any previously published issue, either in original format or collected (reprinted) format, thanks to the publisher's efforts to keep them in print!

This series has my recommendation for those that either want to know more about Jack (King) Kirby or just love to look at his artwork!

Jack Kirby Worked For Joe Ruby and Ken Spears
Mood:  caffeinated
Topic: TV Shows

Jack Kirby Worked For...

Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, Of Ruby-Spears Productions

As Explained  At The 2008 SDCC Comic Con International!

I had the pleasure of seeing Joe Ruby and Ken Spears at the last San Diego Comic Con International
in July 2008.

They were both in two of Mark Evanier's programs that he conducted at the Con.

One program was spotlighting their achievements and history in the animation field.

The other program was their attendance at the Annual Jack Kirby Tribute.

As explained at both programs... During the years of 1978 - 87, Jack Kirby worked for the Ruby-Spears Productions by coming up with concepts. Several of these were shown on TV.

Those included:

Thundarr The Barbarian 1980-82 on ABC

Mr. T (yes, THAT Mr. T!) 1983-86 on ABC

Turbo Teen 1984-85 on ABC

Centurion, syndicated show with 64 episodes

Rambo, syndicated show in 1986

Sectaurs, syndicated show in 1985

Chuck Norris' Karate Kommandos, syndicated show in 1986

Lazer Tag Academy, 1986-87 on NBC

There were others concepts and ideas that did not make it to the small screen.

BTW, Jack also worked on DePatie- Freling's The New Fantastic Four cartoon shown on NBC from 1978-79 with 12 episodes.

He also worked on the All-New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show that ran from 1983-84.

This part of Jack Kirby's life is not well known by many. With Jack's long history in comics, there are many fans of the different periods that he worked in.

I for one am a fan of his MoNSter work at 'Marvel Comics', and of course the Fantastic Four, my favorite of his works.

Others came in the early 1970's when Jack was working for DC Comics and created his Fourth World series of New Gods, Mister Miracle and The Forever People.

Others came in when Jack came back to Marvel in 1975 and worked on the Black Panther series, Captain America, etc.

However a lot of readers are not aware of his work in the animation field in the late 1970's in the mid 1980's.  Funny thing is... Jack started as an 'in-betweener' for the Fleischer Studios that produced the early Popeye Cartoons in the mid 1930's!

Thanks for reading this blog post, and join us again for more!

Spotlight On Warren Sattler - Comic Strip and Comic Book Artist
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Comic Book Artists

Spotlight On

 Warren Sattler

Comic Strip and Comic Book Artist!

I was reminded of an archived blog post of ours after picking up some more Charlton Comics this weekend to read and to list later. Several were drawn by Warren Sattler....

Earlier this year we sold a Charlton Comics Book, Yang #5 from our eBay Featured Store to a buyer.

When we received payment from the buyer, I noticed that there was a note as follows:

"Warren Sattler, the artist of this comic, just happens to be my Uncle. Nice to have this issue in my collection! Thanks!
Theodore Sattler"

The Item listing was: #350011996476
Item Title: YANG #5 VF+ Martial Arts Charlton Comic Book SATTLER

After Theodore received his comic book, we corresponded further, and I found out more about Warren Sattler I wasn't aware of as follows:

"My Uncle did both the Yang and Billy the Kid comic books and he also freelanced alot doing bits for Cracked and Mad magazines.

He also did a lot of substitute work for the daily comics as well where an artist would take leave for whatever reason and he would just fill in drawing the strip in that particular artist's style. I just picked up one of his Country singles on eBay also. Yep, he's a singer too!
Thanks!
-Tad Sattler"

Well, earlier this year I had not known about all the above accomplishments, was aware of some of his work for Charlton, and figured that most of our blog readers would not know this information Tad sent over either.

So, since I picked up some more Billy the Kids for my own collection, it reminded that one of the reasons for our blog is to mention those artists and writers that don't get a lot of promotion for their past or even current work!

Once I again... My thanks to Tad (Theodore) for the info and for submitting the pic of his Uncle used at the top left of this blog post!

Thanks for reading this popular culture - comics - comic books blog post and welcome to all of our new readers since this topic was first blogged!

Michael

Click here to see all of our current Charlton Comics listings!

The above picture of Warren Sattler was from his induction into the Meriden, Connecticut Hall of Fame, courtesy of Theodore (Tad) Sattler.

The following is from data that was found on the web:

Warren Sattler started cartooning at an early age. His first published work was in a newspaper when he was age 15.

Warren received his education at the Wilcox Technical School in Meriden, Connecticut.

For those of you that have seen the ads throughout the years... he later taught at the Famous Artists School from 1957 to 1962! That I thought was interesting!

Then in the 1960s, he assisted on the comic strips Barnaby and The Jackson Twins. Warren also had his own strip, Grubby, that was published from 1964 to 1997.

It was in the 1970s that Warren Sattler produced art for comic books, in particular for Charlton Comics Group!

Some of those Charlton Comics titles he worked on included Billy the Kid, Fightin' Army, Fightin' Marines, Ghost Manor, Ghostly Haunts, and Yang.

During the same time period he worked as an illustrator for Cracked magazine, National Lampoon, and also Playboy.

Warren also found the time to create a second syndicated comic strip in 1980! That was Swamp Brats, which was a Sunday-only strip.

Also, as Tad suggested in the column to the right, Warren also ghosted on such newspaper strips as Bringing Up Father, Comics for Kids, and Gil Thorp during the 1980s and 1990s.

For all of the above work and more, he was inducted into the Meriden Hall of Fame in the Year 2003.

I am glad that this Blog finally was able to bring Warren Sattler's many accomplishments to our readership with this blog post! Again my thanks to Theodore (Tad) Sattler for his contributions!
