The Harvey Awards Winners For 2008

Presented At The 2008 Baltimore Comic Con On September 27th!

Last week I received notification in my Facebook account from Charles Edward Sellner, that Visionary Studios would be attending the Baltimore Comic Con. That reminded me that I had not blogged about the Harvey Awards that would be presented at that Con....

The Harvey Awards were named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman. He was one of the industry's most innovative talents, of whom I have blogged about before.

The Harveys recognize outstanding achievements in over 20 categories in comics and sequential art, ranging from Best Artist to the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame.

They are the only industry awards both nominated by and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

The following were the receipients of the 2008 Harvey Awards:

Best Letterer – Chris Eliopoulos, Daredevil

Best Colorist – Laura Martin, Thor

Best Syndicated Strip or Panel – Doonsbury, by Garry Trudeau

Best Online Comics Work – Perry Bible Fellowship by Nicholas Gurewitch

Best Inker – Kevin Nowlan - Witchblade

Best American Edition of Foreign Material - Eduardo Risso’s Tales of Terror by Dynamite Entertainment

Best New Series - The umbrella Academy, Dark Horse Comics

Best Graphic Album, Previously Published - Captain America Omnibus, Marvel Comics

Special Award for Humor in Comics - Perry Bible Fellowship by Nicholas Gurewitch

Best New Talent – Vasilis Lolos, Last Call, Oni Press

Best Biographical, Historical or Journalistic Presentation - Reading Comics: How Graphic Albums Work and What They Mean by Douglas Wolk

Best Anthology - Popgun Volume 1, Edited by Joe Keatinge, Image Comics

Best Domestic Reprint Project - The Complete Peanuts, Fantagraphics Books

Best Cover Artist – Mike Mignola, Hellboy

Special Award for Excellence in Presentation - EC Archives, edited by Russ Cochran, Gemstone

Best Graphic Album, Original - Scott Pilgrim Gets it Together, Oni Press

The Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award – Nick Cardy, presented by Todd Dezago

Best Continuing or Limited Series - All Star Superman, DC Comics

Best Writer – Brian K. Vaughan, Y: The Last Man, DC Comics

Best Artist – Frank Quitely, All Star Superman, DC Comics

Best Cartoonist – Darwyn Cooke, The Spirit, DC Comics

Best Single Issue or Story - All Star Superman #8, DC Comics

The above are mentioned here so you can check out their works if you already haven't!

The BIG Question Of The Day For Me Is....

The

BIG

Question Of The Day For Me Is....

Which

Iron Man Film DVD

To Purchase Today?!

That's right!

Today is the day the Iron Man Film is released for sale on DVD!

Woo-hoo as my wife Tina would say!

I have seen ads, promos and blurbs about the DVD being available for sale, from discount prices to actual MSRP, from single disc DVD to special editions.

The BIG question for me is do I really want these 'special editions' for my personal DVD library?

I remember buying the 'special' three disc wide screen edition of 'Spider-Man 3' from a department store. The 3rd disc was actually not all that 'special' IMHO, and the department store was basically just adding that 'bonus' DVD to the regular 2-Disc Special Edition.

However, I know that I'll pick up one of these for my 'Marvel Superheroes Film Library', as I have been waiting for these superheroes to appear on the Big Screen ever since I first joined the good ol' M.M.M.S.!

For Tina's May 3rd review of the Iron Man Film, (not the DVD), click here.

For Michael's May 3rd review of the Iron Man Film only, click here.

No matter which edition I buy today, I know that we'll be watching it several times in the future, as Marvel "got it right" on this film for me and for Tina!

EERIE # 136 Had A Special Model For It's Cover!

WARREN'S MAGAZINE EERIE # 136

Had A Special Model For It's Starlad Cover!

One of the fun things about blogging is the being able to share experiences that my wife or I come across in our pop culture activities....

For those that are new to us, we run a few websites, as well as having an online store that buys and sells comics, graphic novels, magazines that are part of 'pop culture'.

I waited a while to blog about the following, because our buyer was getting the magazine as a 'gag gift' for their friend's birthday.

The "friend" turned out to be Bill DuBay, whose father is William Bryan 'Bill' DuBay, the famous comic book writer, artist and editor!

Our buyer had seen the original artwork to the cover of Eeerie #136. She stated in an email to us:   "I have seen the actual front art Starlad cover, which is a huge original painting hanging on the wall, and sure enough... the boy on the front cover is Bill jr. as a kid.".

So this buyer was comparing our listing for the magazine to another listing she was also looking at. She didn't know how comics / magazines were graded and emailed us first with her question: "Your comic states an "8", as the other guy states his comic "very good".... what is the difference? What does "very fine" mean in the comic book world."

Well, I answered her question on comics grading, and she followed up with another question, and then she bought the magazine from us after emailing us this:  "Thank you very much for your fast reply, and your informative info on the comic grading scale. So, I would gather that yours is a very nice copy to own... which would make for a nice gift....smile.".

It is really neat when we sell something that is going to someone that is related to the subject matter. We recently sold a Warren Sattler drawn comic book to his nephew Theodore Sattler for his collection, (click here for that blog post!).

Are You A Fan Of The Harvey Cartoons & Comics?

Are You A Fan Of The

 Harvey

Cartoons & Comics?

I so often blog about Superheroes, HoRRoR & MoNSTer comics and magazines and movies, that I sometimes neglect to blog about other genres of comics!

I recently became 'Facebook Friends' with Mark Arnold, who is the Editor of the ongoing Harveyville Fun Times, which just released issue #70 this past July 2008!

I received an "invitation" from Mark yesterday to see the Harvey Art Show at the San Francisco's Cartoon Art Museum which is showing now through November 2008.

The show will then move to the MoCCA in New York in December and later to the Toonseum in Pittsburgh in mid-2009.

The projected ending of the show is at Geppi's Entertainment Museum in Baltimore in 2010.

Unfortunately, Tina and I won't be near San Francisco during that time period, and then the show journeys Eastward, even further from us!

So, I guess we'll have to make do with viewing pics from the Harvey Art Show Opening Reception that Mark has added to his 'Fun Ideas Productions' group on Facebook!

For those that haven't seen an issue of Harveyville Fun Times, this could be a chance to check out "The Best Of Harveyville Fun Times" in softcover format!

The softcover format was edited by Mark Arnold, with a foreword by writer Tony Isabella.

I believe that this is the first major book on Harvey Comics' history published!

For more info on this publication, please see the next column for the photo of the cover and what the book contains. The 400 page book can be found for approx $29.99 plus shipping.

For those of you that are new to our blog, we have an ongoing 'Comics Show and Pop Culture Convention' ourselves here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and new listings of items for sale in our online store!

This softcover format reprints some of the best material from the long-running 'Harveyville Fun Times' fanzine which of course features articles about various Harvey Comics characters such as Casper, Richie Rich, Hot Stuff and Sad Sack!

Additionally it serves as a survey of Harvey-related feature films, animated series, comic book indexes and reviews, and interviews and tributes to various Harvey artists, writers, and creators including Ernie Colon, Sid Jacobson, Dom Sileo, Paul Maringelli, and Fred Rhoads!
