While Waiting For The New TV Season To Start...

...Tina And I Broke Out The Pilot Episode Of 'The X-Files' To View!

Click Here to see all of our X-Files listings for sale! Last night there just wasn't much on for us to view on TV... And we had already seen 'The Spirit' at the theater and had no others we wanted to see on the Big Screen!

So I went through our old VHS tapes that we haven't yet listed in our online stores, and found the Pilot Episode of 'The X-Files'...

Tina and I both felt that the recent X-Files Theatrical Film was a little lacking, (click here for our reviews), and thus thought why not see the first epsiode of the show that we both watched before we were married.

Both Tina and I realized it was the chemistry between Scully and Mulder that made the TV Series work, and last so long.

Below is an archived blog post that I blogged two years ago this month. It still holds true today:

Gillian Anderson.... As Agent Dana Scully of the X-Files...

... is one of the main reasons that the TV Show lasted so long, and was sucessfully transferred to comic book format in my opinion.

Gillian was born in 1968. She moved to New York when she was twenty-two, and started her career in theater.

She moved to Los Angeles in 1991, spending a year auditioning. Although she had once vowed she would never do TV, she ended up on a few shows including the Class of '96.

As a result of her guest appearance in Class of '96, Anderson was sent the script for The X Files at the age of 24, by Chris Carter.

The TV series eventually ran for nine seasons, and included one theatrical film.

Her role as Dana Scully kept the show 'grounded' in my opinion, so as to keep it interesting for a more mainstream viewing audience. Sometimes these sci-fi shows garner too much of a cult following that turns off the mainstream viewership and ends up withe show having a shortened run.

I remember the first X-Files Convention held in San Diego, the comic book was a very hot commodity and hundreds were signed as conventioneers stood in line for those signatures!

For those interested in the X-Files Comic Books, we have several of those comics listed in our eBay Featured Store.

(End of archived blog post.)

Tonight we'll be watching one of the Wild Card Football Games, of course it's the San Diego Chargers vs the Colts! And tomorrow we've got Tina's Philadelphia Eagles vs the Vikings. So I won't have to go through our video box for the rest of this weekend, LOL!

For those of you that are new to our blog today, we have an ongoing 'Comic Con and Pop Culture Convention'  here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts,  and new listings of items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store

Spotlight On

Jay Fife!

Jay Is A Portrait, Pin-up, Cover and Fantasy Illustrator Based In The Upper Ohio Valley!

Click Here to see all of our SHE-HULK listings for sale! One of the great things about having a FaceBook Network... Is that I am able to view several works by artists and writers that I wouldn't even have found otherwise without it! After all, Tina and I can't attend every comic and pop culture convention out there!

Jay Fife recently became a new 'Facebook Friend', and of course I had to check out his artwork.

Imagine how pleased I was when I came across several superheroines including Wonder Woman pictured at the very top of this post, and She-Hulk that he is holding in the photo above!

(Long time readers know I like to post photos of Con attendees dressed up as Wonder Woman!  Plus Tina was finally able to get a photo of me with the best She-Hulk we've seen yet, who was at the 2008 SDCC and now another one of my FaceBook Friends!)

Both of those above creations by Jay are just the tip of the vast body of artwork seen at his personal web site and another gallery for artists web site.

Jay has drawn from a variety of influences and has also created portraits of television and film stars. He is a portrait, pinup and fantasy Illustrator from the upper Ohio Valley, just outside of Pittsburgh, PA.  The following is from his brief bio:

"A lifetime of interest in art with training in portraiture accompanied with a life long love of comics and old fashioned monster movies came together to help produce an interesting gallery of images. Working primarily in pencil, Jay creates realistic yet stylish images of well known characters or original creations. Jay has been featured in publications such Bad Place Productions Safe Words and Zonetrooper as well as cover art for the Victorian Horror Magazine The Willows and the comic from Pickle Press, Dare."

You can see more of his artwork at the following websites:

Thanks Jay for sending me the links to your works, and to much more additional success for you in this New Year!

(Please Note: A complimentary copy of any work for this blog mention was NOT provided by the artist.)

Jeff Mariotte

(Author of the Upcoming 'Zombie Cop' Graphic Novel)

Will Be At The Phoenix Comic Con!

January 23rd thru 25th, 2009!

Click Here to see all of our listings for sale! Jeff Mariotte... one of my newest Facebook Friends informs me that he will be there with his latest published work!

Jeff messaged me the following comment:

"My new graphic novel ZOMBIE COP will be making its debut there! Although it goes on sale Jan. 14th from Image Comics/Shadowline, I'm not doing any events until the con."

So of course I wanted to mention this in our Blog, especially if you are a fan of Jeff's and would like to see him there!

So what is his new graphic novel about?  Well it's a story that "is deliberately vague about time and place. It’s basically now, and it’s set in a big American city. But the city is never named and the time is never specifically mentioned. It’s a story that could happen anywhere, anytime that a zombie breakout occurs."

More particulars on this graphic novel:  "Joe Mundy is a doomed cop, desperately clinging to the last vestiges of his humanity before the virus that infected him turns him into a zombie. Will he have enough time to solve the mystery of what cause the virus to strike his city, before he succumbs to his horrific fate? Alternately humorous, horrific, tender and tragic, Zombie Cop will have you questioning just what it means to be human!"

Publishing Details for this Graphic Novel:

Zombie Cop
Written by Jeff Mariotte
Art by Szymon Kudranski
Lettering by Brant Fowler
cover price: $14.99
Format: graphic novel
Pages: 136   Note: 96 pages are a comic story, and the remainder is an original horror novella by award-winning horror writer Jeff Mariotte, set in the same universe.

Tina and I vacationed in Sedona, Arizona during the Christmas Holiday Week, but won't be able to attend the Phoenix Comic Con at the end of January, (sigh)...

Here are the details for the Phoenix Comic Con:

Where:  Phoenix Comicon 2009 is being held at the Mesa Convention Center. The Mesa Convention Center is a full-service event facility located in the heart of downtown Mesa, Arizona. The Center is conveniently located just 20 minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, and is easily accessed via the Loop 202, Loop 101, and US 60.

Cost:

Full 3 Day Membership Purchased At The Door $35

Friday Single Day Membership $20
Saturday Single Day Membership $25

Thanks Jeff for bringing your graphic novel to my attention! And blog readers don't forget it goes on sale January 14th at all your usual sources!

BTW, Jeff is also the author of several genre’s of books, from Spider-Man to CSI: Miami, to Star Trek, and even to Conan! Plus Jeff is writing a four-issue movie adaptation of the upcoming film Terminator: Salvation, that Tina and I previewed at the San Diego Comic Con International last July! The film looks so cool that I kept my Film Promo T-Shirt instead of selling it, LOL!

Don Heck Would Have Been...

Don Heck Would Have Been 80 Years Old Today

Celebrating The Birth of Dashin' Don Heck

On January 2nd, 1929!

Starting off this new year by looking back a bit... and thinking about those comic book creators that made me get interested in comics in the first place!

Don Heck's artwork was one that I followed for many years when I first started to actually collect comics.

Don had started at Harvey Comics, but soon worked for Quality Comics, Hillman Comics, and Toby Press.

But it was his work for Timely/Atlas/Marvel Comics that really brought his artwork to my attention!

Don never achieved the stellar fame of others in the early Marvel Bullpen, like Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko.  But like Dick Ayers, Don was good and dependable in meeting his deadlines and drawing quality work.

I enjoyed his early work on Iron Man which he co-created in 1963. His style was right for that strip IMHO, especially for the characters of Tony Stark, Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan!

The Avengers was another 1960's series he was known for drawing, and with so many in that group it had to be hard for any artist to put in so many characters in each issue!

However, what I most liked about his drawing, was the earlier non-superhero stories that Atlas / Marvel had before the birth of their Marvel Superheroes line.  Don's artwork was so unique that you could spot his work easily. I for one really enjoyed those sci-fi stories when published in 'Tales Of Suspense', 'Strange Worlds', 'Worlds of Fantasy', 'Strange Tales' and more titles in that genre.

Don could also draw a 'heck' of a beautiful woman, as evidenced in his romance stories!

Don passed away February 23rd, 1995. His Marvel Comics work will continue to entertain new readers for many more years, as it is being reprinted in 'Masterworks', and 'Essential' volumes.  Which is good, because any photos of Don Heck the artist himself are hard to find!

Thanks Don for the memories!

Our Take On... The Spirit ! - Part 2

Our Take On...

The Spirit!

Part 2 - Tina's Review Of The New Film Now Showing!

As blogged about previously in Part 1... we didn't get to see 'The Spirit' when it opened on Christmas Day in Sedona, Arizona where we were vacationing, as they did not have it showing in any of the 6 Theaters at the local Harkins!

This blog post is written after a late-afternoon showing of it at a local theater near us. We wanted to see this film at the theater, as the previews we had seen at the San Diego Comic International had made us realize that if we were to view this at all, it would be best to see it on the Big Screen....

Here are Tina's thoughts, who should be considered more of a mainstream viewer even though she does attend many comic con and pop culture conventions:

The Spirit is most notable for its' excellent casting, (especially the bodacious Eva Mendes!), great stylized look, art direction and costumes.

I'd give it an 8.0 out of 10.0 on a rating scale. I can't quite put my finger on what I didn't like, except to say it was epitomized by the guy behind me snoring several times throughout the movie. These were the the same times I found myself nodding off. I thought it was just the after effects of New Year's Eve, but his snoring made me think maybe not!

Suffice it to say, it was long and unduly outrageous in spots. I coudn't figure out if the Octopus was supposed to be funny, insane, or scary. He wasn't so scary, he was more just weird, and I kept wondering why Scarlett Johansson had hitched herself to him. She seemed to think he was nuts too.

The Spirit's odes to his city got a little old for me, before he was done with his first one!

I enjoyed all the comic book industry Easter Eggs and nudged Michael when I caught several - Ditko, Pfeiffer, Eiger St, etc.

The best part of the movie for me was seeing Louis Lombardi, (Edgar from '24' TV Show) resurrected as the clones.  He / they were one comic element in the movie that worked every time.

If you are a '24' TV show fan like me and Michael, pay close attention to Sand Sharef's husband. You'll be rewarded by seeing 'Miles'!

Gabriel Macht (Denny Colt / The Spirit), was surprisingly good. I was prepared to dislike him and even feared a big dissapointment ala the light weight Brandon Rausch in 'Superman Returns'. However, Macht carried the load - and what a great one.

Frank Miller fans will delight in the film and in seeing Frank in the film also. Watch the first act carefully for Frank's appearance. He goes all out at times, he even loses his head!
