'Lost' Returns...

But Does The Island?

We'll See Tonight With The Two-Hour Episode!

Click Here to see our current listed SCI-FI Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels!  At the top left of this blog post is the scene from the Lost TV Show episode where the Atlas Comics comic book... was shown along with the knife that the young John Locke chose instead of the comic book! The comic book's cover is shown to the left of this starting paragraph for better detail.

The comic book was used as a prop in the 05-08-08 episode. Sharp eyed viewers saw this comic and immediately started searching for it online.

Several discussion boards mentioned the comic and inquired what significance it had to the storyline. As a matter of fact a couple of those boards linked to our blog posts, even though we aren't a 'Lost' TV Show specific blog.

We had blogged about it a few times that week, as we could see that without the hand and the knife obscuring the comic book cover, you get a better idea of how an island could be moved!

Plus we posted a photo of Steve Ditko below the comic book, because it was this very issue of Mystery Tales #40 that Steve Ditko had his first artwork for Atlas Comics published! Atlas was the pre-cursor to what we know as Marvel Comics today!  The story on how an island could be moved, plus the additional stories in the comic book were listed in that same blog post... (Click here to see that blog post.)

Tina has been wishing that January 21st would come sooner, as the 'Lost' TV Show is still in her Top 3 Favorite TV Shows!  As for myself, even with the starts and stops and strike, I am still interested in the series, especially when they include comic book memorabilia as 'Easter Eggs'!

For those of you that are new to our blog today, we have an ongoing 'Comic Con and Pop Culture Convention'  here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts, and new listings of items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store

From Batman  To Ghandi

At MoCCA

7PM Thursday January 22nd, 2009

From Batman  to Gandhi:

Comics from Super Heroes to the Nonviolent!

This is a timely program this week...  What with Monday being the holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr., and then the inauguration on Tuesday in the nation's capital.

I received the following promo notice from Ellen S Abramowitz regarding the program this upcoming Thursday evening:

Discussion with Mark Badger and Dian Killian, moderated by Keith Mayerson.

No other city can boast as many super heroes as New York---Superman, Batman, and Spiderman all play out their larger-than-life adventures in the Big Apple. Yet what happens when the action figure genre is applied to a different kind of risk and adventure--every day interactions between New Yorkers? And rather than using physical force or finesse--like Superman and Spiderman--it’s communication skills to the rescue?

On January 22nd, a moderated discussion will take place featuring Mark Badger and Dian Killian, co-creators of a new graphic novel (being launched that night at MoCCA), Urban Empathy: True Life Adventures of Compassion on the Streets of New York. The discussion will be moderated by Keith Myerson, who teaches cartoon art at the School of Visual Arts, with members of the audience invited to comment and ask questions. The presentation will include a slide show on the history of super hero comics. It will be preceded at 6:30pm by a “Meet and Greet” with the authors for MoCCA members. Both authors will be available after the discussion to sign books.

The following are additional details:

Discussion Program with Mark Badger & Dian Killian:

Where - 594 Broadway, Suite 401, New York, NY 10012,

Please Note: the Museum has regular hours of viewing which have an admission fee: General Admission: $5

I blog about several events that are at MoCCA. That is because Tina and I have enjoyed visiting this Museum while on our last trip to NYC.  I for one would love to live closer to this Museum so as to attend programs such as this one taking place on Thursday night!  If you are close to NYC or find yourself there on a trip, be sure to check the Musuem out and see if there any special programs going on while you are there!

Typhon

Volume 1

Reviewed!

Danny Hellman recently sent me...  A digital review copy of his new trade paperback book, 'Typhon'.

If you think you've heard the name 'Typhon' before; that is because he was a creature out of Greek Mythology. Typhon was a frightful multi-headed monster who did battle with Zeus!

Additionally, for those that are reading this blog post and are not aware of Danny Hellman who is the publisher of this book; he has been creating art for publication since 1988.  Since that time he has worked for a wide variety of clients, including Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, FHM, Guitar World, New York Press, and many others. He is also the publisher of Legal Action Comics Volumes 1 & 2.

What Danny has here is a full-color, 192 page comics anthology trade paperback book called "TYPHON". This book features new work by forty-two cartoonists from across the USA, Canada, South America and in Europe.

As I have blogged about before, anthology comics are harder to 'review' due to the fact that returning characters or storylines are usually not part of the mix and in several cases were not meant to be continued.

However, anthologies are a great way for a publisher to experiment with different styles and content when publishing.

Indeed publishers can pick and choose what they want to publish, as several creators do not produce enough pages of their creation to be a stand alone one-shot comic or graphic novel. As Danny puts it "As an editor of anthologies, I’m excited to provide a showcase for artists and work that we might not see otherwise. Diversity makes for a richer comics scene.”.

The question is though, will the reader(s) of the anthology comic enjoy one or more of the stories enough to come back for the next issue?  In this case, Danny's Volume One of Typhon has so many pages and so many different stories from so many cartoonists that there must be some to several stories that you as a reader must like somewhere in these 192 pages!

Here are my thoughts on the stories that caught my interest, tho not necessarily my favorite stories:

(Note: Please be aware that this book is 'For Mature Readers'.)

The Bullyrag By Patrick Moriarty is a retelling of the story between Typhon and Zeus. Starting on page 64 it is a two page story, with the gods being portrayed as animal characters. This book's cover is a scene from this story, with art by R. Sikoryak.

Goofball Heist by Glenn Head is very similar to the 1960's underground comix that I used to see passed around in high school. As it was back then, you can take it or leave it...

Tcha Chuk is a sample of a few of the one page comics that are in this anthology... three off beat stories by David Paleo.

John Star and The Robots of Atlantis has Hitler's brain, Joseph Stalin, the KKK, and Black Panthers. This strip has the potential to continue... if you dig this kind of humor.

Box Top Comics in its' one page stories are funny in a strange sort of way... four different stories by Dalton Webb.

Gregory Spalding - The Most Boring Vampire Ever by Lorenz Peter is pretty funny. There are a few one page stories included in this volume starting at page 106.

Reviewer's Note:  While reading the digital review copy of the book on my Adobe Reader, I felt like I was watching a 'Spike and Mike' Sick & Twisted Film Festival'. For those of you that either have been at one of those festivals or watched one on a DVD, you'll  know what I mean!

That being said, there will be readers that will find some of these stories 'gems', some so-so, some unreadable, and some of the stories gross. You'll wonder why some of the stories were ever published, while you'll also wonder why some of the stories weren't expanded or continued into full fledged comics of their own.

Unlike the Film Festivals that I mentioned above, you as a reader have a choice in skipping the pages you don't want to read, and center in on the ones that appeal to you. (Just like the editor / publisher picked out the stories that appealed to him when assembling the stories for this book.)

The final question is what will your pocketbook say about choosing this book to read?  That my dear blog readers is up to your choice in reading material and what you are willing to spend for that pleasure.

The book is rich in diversity as the publisher stated above, but it is in such diversity that not all stories can or could appeal to everyone.  Nor could such a book not amuse, exhilarate, offend, stimulate, alienate, invigorate, mesmerize, or otherwise move the reader into different emotions when reading the diverse stories accumulated!

The book, if not available at your LCBS or at your usual source of purchases, can be found at the publisher's web site:

www.dannyhellman.com

ISBN: 978-0-9709363-3-2
Price: $24.95 US
For mature readers

This is thought to be a complete list of TYPHON’s contributors:
Ken Avidor, Derek Ballard, Gregory Benton, Rupert Bottenberg, DJ Bryant, Mark Campos, David Chelsea, Chris Cilla, Max Clotfelter, Patrick Dean, Bald Eagles, Chance Fiveash, Richard Gagnon, Nicholas Gazin, Robert Goodin, Glenn Head, Danny Hellman, Hugo, Hawk Krall, Tim Lane, Jeff LeBlanc, Pat Moriarty, Cliff Mott, David Paleo, Lorenz Peter, Grant Reynolds, Hans Rickheit, Pshaw, R. Sikoryak, Doug Skinner, Fiona Smyth, Steak Mtn., Takeshi Tadatsu, Tobias Tak, Eric Theriault, Matthew Thurber, Motohiko Tokuta, Rich Tommaso, Rick Trembles, Henriette Valium, Dalton Webb, & Chris Wright.

(Please Note: A Complimentary digital copy for this review was provided by the publisher. The book is only in print format for purchase.)

Martin Luther King Jr.

The Comic Book!

Martin Luther King Jr In 1956 Comic Book!

Today the USPS is closed...  And also several other companies because of the holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr., (MLK).

Currently there is a lot of discussion, and people searching for the new Barrack Obama comics that have been issued during the presidential campaign, and also in a recent Amazing Spider-Man Comic Book.

Well, MLK also has been featured in several comics during the past decades...

The comic book pictured at the top of this blog post was published in 1956 by The Fellowship of Reconciliation. To my knowledge that is the oldest comic book with MLK on the cover.

This comic book had an English printing of 250,000 copies, and a Spanish version of 125,000 copies. They were used for teaching tools about the civil rights movement.

There was a second comic book biography of Dr. King that was printed by Golden Legacy Comics in the 1970s. That would be issue #13 for those looking for it!

Later there was a TPB, (Trade Paper Back), on King by Ho Che Anderson. I have seen copies of this on eBay.

We do not have these publications in stock, as the 1956 printing is very rare now. As this blog post is published, there are only two of the above shown comic book listed on eBay, with the lowest priced one starting at $99.00 on an auction format!

We do however have African-American Superhero comics in our eBay Premium Store as those have been published since the 1960's: Black Panther, Black Goliath, Black Lightning, Luke Cage Hero For Hire / Power Man, and more.

Comics are a great introduction to get young people to read (more), and also sometimes a good start for someone to start collecting. Just be aware of the 'collectibles' that have been peddled during the years, as usually those 'collectibles' are printed in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, and don't become true collectible of any value. Remember the X-Men #1s of the 1990s, or Shazam #1s. or Dazzler #1s, etc., etc.?!

For those of you that are new to our blog today, we have an ongoing 'Comic Con and Pop Culture Convention'  here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts,  and new listings of items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store

New International Shipping Rates...
Mood:  caffeinated
Topic: eBay Info

Click here to see our current listings of Graphic Novels, Comics, Magazines, and other Pop Culture Items!

New International Shipping Rates...

From Make It So Marketing Inc.

( MISM )

Rates Effective January 18th, 2009!

Our shipper, the USPS, has changed its' rates for international shipping today, January 18th, 2009... And unfortunately we here at MISM must do the same.  Here are the new rates effective immediately:

SHIPPING COST TO CANADA:
FLAT RATE Priority International Shipping is for NON-CGC graded comic books only!  We will ship 4 to 9 non-CGC graded comics to CANADIAN addresses only at the $12.95 shipping charge!  Sorry, no magazines and no CGC graded comics at this shipping rate!

However, If you want to buy JUST ONE NON-CGC comic, (no magazines, just a comic), then the shipping cost would be $4.99 for FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL, but  ONLY FOR ONE SINGLE STANDARD SIZED COMIC BOOK. No Annuals or Giant-Sized Comics at this special rate as the postal cost to us is based on weight!

For 2 to 3 standard sized comics... We can ship those comics (only non-CGC comics) for $6.99 USD!

PLEASE NOTE: We will ship up to 25 single standard sized non-slabbed comics in a Flat Rate Priority Box International to Canadian addresses. The shipping and handling charge for that is $28.95 USD.

For those in Canada that are interested in magazines, we can ship one in a Flate Rate Priority Mail Envelope for $12.95 USD. Possibly two magazines in a Flat Rate Envelope depending upon the magazine size and page counts.  Please email us first with which magazine(s) you are interested in as we do not list magazines for international shipping normally.

Small magazines the size and approximate page count of comics can be shipped one at a time for a $6.99 shipping charge.  Shipping for one non-comic book full sized magazine will be $12.95 for a flat rate envelope. If we cannot fit the number of magazines you want in the envelope, then the mags will have to placed in a Flat Rate Priority Box(es) for an amount TO BE DETERMINED as magazines are different sizes and page counts and cannot be be figured out how to ship AFTER being purchased.

Please contact us first, as our magazines are NOT listed for shipping outside of the USA at this time. The listings would have to each be revised to allow you to purchase them individually. We will be glad to do so after we communicate with you on the costs and how many would fit in the box!

For CGC Comics - We have been hesitant to ship these internationally, but are now considering shipping them to Canadian addresses. On an individual buyer basis only. Please email us if you have interest in our CGC listings. The CGC encapsulated comics would have to be shipped via Priority International Flat Rate Box for the $28.95 USD Shipping Charge PLUS Insurance if over $25.00 value of the item. We can place from one to two CGC encapsulated comic(s) in each Flat Rate Box. E-mail us via eBay's email program to discuss further....

SHIPPING COST TO UNITED KINGDOM & AUSTRALIA:
FLAT RATE Priority International Shipping is for NON-CGC graded comic books only!  We will ship 1 to 9 non-CGC graded comics, (no magazines) to the UK or AU/NZ for $14.95 USD as that is what the Priority International Envelope will hold with cardboard insert for protection.

Magazines are not normally listed for shipping to the UK & Australia. However, we can ship them, but as explained in the section above for Canadian buyers, the sizes and page counts make those purchases more difficult to figure out shipping costs. Please email us so we can figure out what can be shipped to you and for what cost.

NOTE:  We will ship up to 25 single standard sized raw (non encapsulated CGC comics) in a flat rate priority mail box to the UK and Australia.  Our charge for this would be $45.95 USD at this time for the shipping.

For CGC Graded Comics - We have been hesitant to ship these internationally, but are now considering shipping them to UK and Australian addresses. On an individual buyer basis only. Please email us if you have interest in our CGC listings. The CGC encapsulated comics would have to be shipped via Priority International Flat Rate Box for the $45.95 USD Shipping Charge PLUS Insurance if over $25.00 value of the item. We can place from one to two CGC encapsulated comic(s) in each Flat Rate Box. E-mail us via eBay's email program to discuss further....

SHIPPING COST TO OTHER COUNTRIES:

For other countries that are NOT listed above, we still may be able to ship to YOUR country! There are multiple reasons why we don't universally show that we ship to your country, but we encourage you to e-mail us with your question as to shipping charges for YOUR country!
Items like comic books are relatively easy to ship via USPS  Priority International Flat Rate Envelopes, but unfortunately they don't ship everywhere in the World via that rate yet!  And eBay doesn't separate out several countries in 'Europe', only United Kingdom and Germany from the other countries.

(i.e We will ship to France, Spain, Sweden, Finland, etc...)

However, there are some countries that we just can't ship to because of their postal systems mishandling our packages in the past... Please e-mail us with your question as to if we can ship and what the charge would be to your country!

-------------------------------

SHIPPING COST TO USA Addresses:
There is NO CHANGE to our USA Shipping Rates at this time, as the USPS is raising ONLY International Rates this weekend. To restate our shipping rates to USA addresses:

SHIPPING COST FOR NON-CGC COMIC BOOKS:
This FLAT RATE Shipping is for NON-CGC graded comic books only!  (NO magazines, NO CGC encapsulated graded comics, and NO other non-comic items are included in this shipping special!)  We will continue to ship unlimited non-CGC graded comics to USA addresses only at the special $4.99 shipping cost for a while longer! The USPS will be raising domestic shipping costs in May 2009... So take advantage of this shipping rate now if you see that we have what you want!  Whether you buy one or three or ten or even more comics, the shipping rate for comic books is still $4.99 until then!

PLUS for the $4.99 you get FREE Delivery Receipt Confirmation for tracking your purchase(s)!

SHIPPING COST FOR MAGAZINES:
We also sell Magazines, but they are odd-sized and varied in number of pages so they cannot be sent via the 'unlimited shipping' rate, sorry! However we will combine shipping where we can, but please email us FIRST for combined shipping cost BEFORE you click to buy multiple magazines! I cannot emphasize this more... e-mail us FIRST!

SHIPPING COST FOR CGC GRADED COMICS:
CGC graded comics come in plastic holders and are shipped only via a Priority BOX so as to protect the holders.  We can place 1 to 2 CGC graded comics in the Flat Rate Priority Box for $9.99 to USA addresses only for a while longer, as the rates will change in May 2009!

Personal Note from Tina and Michael to our International Buyrs:

It is unfortunate that we have to raise our shipping rates to you during these economically challenging times. However with USPS fees and PayPal fees, we just couldn't absorb the additional costs in shipping to you. We will continue to strive to make our shipping to you a rewarding experience and Thank You for your new or continued buying from us!
