Part 2 of A 3 Part Series by Michael D Hamersky

Yesterday I started... Reposting a little series of blog posts about how you should protect and store your paper collectibles. That would include comics, graphic novels, trade paperbacks, full size trading card sheets and more.  It had been almost two years since I last addressed this issue online.

I first published this 3 part series due to all of the collections that I was being offered to buy, and finding that most were never stored properly!  Plus the would be sellers thought that they should get the Near Mint (NM 9.4) Guide Price for Comics that weren't even in 'Good' (G 2.0) Guide Grade.  The HoRRoRs of It All!

If you missed Part 1 of this 3 part series, Click here to read!

Now today is the reposting of that 2nd blog:

Backing Boards Are Important

Backing Boards are sold in different thicknesses and different acid-free properties. You use a backing board for the basic purpose of giving the comic book some stiffness when storing, which helps keep the comic cover and pages from bending, creasing or wrinkling.

Additionally if you place a backing board in the center of the comic, the board will help protect the comic book spine from crushing when stored with other comics.

The second reason for using a backing board to protect a comic is its' potential to neutralize acid that is in the comic book paper. Seriously, acid in the paper that the comic is printed on can cause deterioration of the comic!

Using an acid-free backing board with your comic book can trap and neautralize the acid in the paper.

There are normally three types of comic book backing boards:

Economy Comic book backings, Standard Acid Free Comic book backing boards, and Archival comic book backing boards.

Economy comic book backing boards should be used only for short-term storage and stiffening purposes! These cheaper economy boards do contain acid and can contribute to the earlier breakdown of the comic book. The general eBay public and or dealers generally use these boards for quick sale items as they are the least expensive boards and do help protect during transit of the items.

Standard acid-free comic book backing boards are acid-free and can be used for long-term storage. The cost of these are a little higher, but collectors should consider using these for their personal collections!

The most expensive and best boards are archival comic backing boards which are acid-free and buffered with calcium carbonate. This will help keep your comic book in great condition for many additional years.

The next subject we will cover will be comic book bags which will be discussed in an upcoming blog post! !

If however, you decide NOT to sell your comics, and find that you have been bitten by the 'collecting bug' after bagging and boarding your own comics, then check out our eBay Featured Comic Book Store for more comic related collectibles

Thanks for viewing this comic book blog post.... and feel free to post your comment below. This blog post is written for the 'mainstream' blog post reader as well as the collector, so some of this may be of a more general nature at first reading!

And thus ended the original blog post... Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts... This ends Part 2 of my 3 Part Series on how you should protect and store your paper collectibles.  Stay 'tooned for Part 3 later!

The 1,000+ Character Sketch Cards At the 'Comics For Cures' eBay Listings Will Be Ending Soon... Starting Saturday Evening, April 4th, 2009!  Don't Miss Out On These UNIQUE Sketch Cards!

The above artists, Herb Trimpe, Harold Cupec, Greg Harms, and Daniel Miki... Are just four of the many artists who have contributed one or more sketch cards for the  'Sketch Card Auction and Gallery Show for American Cancer Society'!

I have previously blogged on the above artists individually because they took the time to illustrate and submit sketch cards for this worthy cause, and because that was either brought to my attention or I found out about them while looking at the listings.

There are so many contributors that it is not possible to individually name them all... and that says a lot for the Great turnout from the comics industry for this benefit!

So here are the links once again that will take you the eBay listings for each of the above pictured artists:

Just click here to see all four of Herb Trimpe's sketch cards on auction!

Harold Cupec's 4 sketch cards from his 'Pugnuggle Tales' which you can see by Clicking Here.

Daniel Miki's two set of collage sketch cards,

and see this link for Greg Harms set of four 'Twilight' sketch cards!

Here are the details for the benefit from the 'Comics For Cures' web site as this blog post is published:

Blue Line Art has been organizing their second annual exhibition and auction of original sketch card art to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Their first event in March of 2008 showcased 200 artist with over 1200 sketch cards. They raised over $7,400 for the American Cancer Society and are hoping that this current event will be bigger and better in raising funds.

There will be a public exhibition at Comics 2 Games, Florence, Ky location on April 4th 2009. The auction of all the original art cards will go online starting the week before the Sketch Card exhibition and will end that evening. All proceeds from the sale of the cards will go to the American Cancer Society.

Bob and Mike Hickey, founders and owners of Blue Line Art, are organizing this fundraiser in honor of Bob’s wife Katie, a breast cancer survivor. Blue Line publishes Sketch Magazine and Graphic Novel Scene and sells Blue Line Art boards to both comic book companies and individual artists. The Hickey family has long been aware of the generosity of the comic book community. All involved are looking forward to another successful event that celebrates the diversity of comic book artists’ unique talents and their heroic spirit of helping those in need!

There are a thousand total listings of other sketch cards in this special event to raise funds; please check out the following link to take you to the eBay page where all of those auction listings are listed until the end of the auction time:  Click Here!  The listings start to end on this upcoming Saturday night, April 4th, 2009!

(Note: eBay doesn't allow 'hot links' in the eBay blog posts to non-eBay pages, so if you are reading this on our Blog's eBay format version, just copy and paste the url into your browser and add the www. if necessary. Also, Make It So Marketing is NOT affialiated with Comics For Cures, nor any of the sponsors of the benefit auction. This is for review / mention purposes only, and to hi-light several artists' contributions to the fund raiser.)

Note:  If any other contributors for this special benefit see this blog post, you are welcome to contact me for possible inclusion on a follow up post before the auction listings end on April 4th! That's only a little over 3 days away at the time of this blog posting...

So Comics fans... don't delay looking and placing your bid on these items!

BAG and BOARD Your Paper Collectibles!

Part 1 of A 3 Part Series by Michael D Hamersky

It's been almost two years... Since I ran a little series of blog posts about how you should protect and store your paper collectibles. That would include comics, graphic novels, trade paperbacks, full size trading card sheets and more.

Here is the repost of that first blog:

BAG and BOARD Your Inexpensive Comic Book Collectibles !!! It's the LEAST You Can Do!

No matter where you found the comics, if you bought them or if they were given to you, the very LEAST you can do is to protect them until it is time to either give them away or attempt to resell them!

There are multiple sellers on eBay that sell inexpensive plastic bags, made especially for comic books, so there really is no excuse not to!

The only thing is when buying the bags, is to buy the right size for the comics you are trying to bag!  Comics have 'shrunk' in size during the decades, so older comics from the Golden Age of Comics (from approx 1938 to 1950's) are put into bags that say 'Golden Age on the package!

Silver Age Comics, (from approximately mid 1950's to early 1970's), need a smaller size to fit properly, and the 'Modern Ages of Comics' including Bronze, Copper and whatever else 'age' they want to call them, have their own even smaller size!

Wait a minute!  Now that your comics are in a protective specially designed inexpensive bag, how are they going to fit nicely and keep from bending, when you put them into whatever storage container you are keeping them in?

Never fear, there are also comic backing boards, that are specially made for the comics. Just as bags are usually sold in 100 count packages, so normally are comic backing boards. You can check eBay's listings for those also, as we don't sell these type of supplies.

In an upcoming blog post I will go into more depth on what type of bags and boards to buy. This blog post is just to tell you that there are comic book collecting supplies to protect your comics until you are ready to sell. I see way too many sellers selling comics without protection for their wares!

If however, you decide NOT to sell your comics, and find that you have been bitten by the 'collecting bug' after bagging and boarding your own comics, then check out our eBay Featured Comic Book Store for more comic related collectibles!

Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts... This ends Part 1 of my 3 Part Series on how you should protect and store your paper collectibles.  Stay 'tooned for Part 2 later!

Herb Trimpe

Herb Trimpe... Artist of the first two appearances of Wolverine in the issues of the Incredible Hulk comics books #180 and #181, has contributed a sketch card of Wolverine himself for the  'Sketch Card Auction and Gallery Show for American Cancer Society'!

I have previously blogged about other artists that have also submitted sketch cards for the same worthy cause, and just came across this one among the four sketch cards that Herb Trimpe has donated for the cause!   I had missed his entries earlier, as there are One Thousand listings for bidders to choose from.  That is a Great turnout from the comics industry!

Thus Herb Trimpe now joins my earlier blog posts on this Auction Event with his set of four cards including Wolverine, the Incredible Hulk, the Amazing Spider-Man, and even Doctor Doom!  Just click here to see all four of Herb's sketch cards on auction!

So that would make four artists that I have blogged about that have contributed to this cause... Harold Cupec's 4 sketch cards from his 'Pugnuggle Tales' which you can see by Clicking Here,  Daniel Miki's two set of collage sketch cards and Greg Harms set of four 'Twilight' sketch cards!
