Tina Shopping on FCBD 2009

My wife, Tina and I are big fans of Sci-Fi Channel's EuREKA.  As Tina says, "When you watch this show, you just feel good."   So we were delighted to discover this comic book limited series while touring our San Diego area stores on Free Comic Book Day this past Saturday, May 2nd, 2009.

Here are our reviews of the first two issues of the four issue limited series by Boom! Studios.

Tina says:

I loved how the comic captures the spirit of the show: playful and sweet with a side of zany scientific government conspiracy theory. The dialogue and phrasing matches the show's quirky characters perfectly.

As usual, something's up in Eureka. The story opens in Cafe Diem with Sheriff Carter busting Vincent's chops over the Eureka Fantasy League. Cute. Suddenly, there's a hostage situation at the high school. Of course, Zoe's involved! Carter to the rescue, but the suspect escapes in a unique, only in Eureka way. A manhunt ensues. Could the menacing hulk of a suspect be a victim of a secret scientific military experiment? And, what's his connection to Jo?

Two criticisms:

1. The lettering is much too small and difficult to read!
2. The faces of some of the characters are way off: Taggart, Allison, and most notably - Carter.  This detracts from the overall enjoyment of the comic.

But for storyline and dialogue, Eureka the comic book rates an 'A'.

~Tina

Michael says:

I am pleased that there are comic books out there that Tina herself will pick up and want to buy now.  As a woman and one that was not brought up around comics, there must be something more than just superheroes comics that will appeal to potential customers like her.

The fact is that while Tina was going to Local Comic Book Stores for FCBD, she also browsed the shelves to see what was available for her to read if anything. This emphasizes the fact that LCBS need to stock comics that are cross-overs from TV Shows and Films for variety if nothing else!

Comic book companies like Gold Key, Dell, Marvel and DC used to bring multiple licensed properties to comics during the Silver and Bronze Ages of Comics.  I remember buying several of these with my allowance years ago, even though for the most part I was a 'Marvel Zombie' growing up! (i.e. The Green Hornet, Land of the Giants, Star Trek, etc.)

I enjoyed the first two issues of this four issue limited series as much as Tina.

The plot, the script, dialogue caught the show perfectly. Which would be because EUREKA creators Andrew Cosby and Jaime Paglia are involved in this series!

The artwork on the covers were right on.  However the interior pages did not capture the persons as well as the covers.  I would agree with Tina on the fact that it did keep me from giving it higher than a VF/NM 9.0 rating.

Talking about art, here is something that bothered me about the series.  The nine LCBS we shopped in on FCBD did not have all of the covers for the issues that were on the shelves.   Issue #1 has 2 regular covers plus a 'Limited Edition' 3rd cover.   Issue #2 has 2 covers.  Same for Issues #3 & #4.

Being the 'completist' that I am, this is a total 'turn-off' for me.  I am a firm believer in picking up monthly issues of comic book series and NOT waiting for the Trade Paper Back format.  (Which this series will have shortly.)  In this case I would have almost preferred to have waited for the TPB format, and then check to see if our local library system brought it in for checking out. However, since it was Tina that purchased these, I'm along for the rest of the series in single issues...

I also was around with the boom and bust of comics during the early to mid 1990's with all of the variant covers krap that was going on then.  That was when I stopped buying several series that I had followed for many years...

So, that's my thoughts on the first two issues of this series.  If you are thinking of buying this just to read, and are not a 'collector' then possibly the TPB might be the way to go...

If you are buying it because you are a fan of the show, you might want to check out the first single issue to see if it 'hooks' you, as it is a four issue story arc.  Then it is up to you to either buy the monthly series, or wait for the TPB compilation.

If you are a TV Show 'fanatic' and don't buy a lot of other comics, and just want to specialize in this series, then you might want to look at the multiple covers for each issue number, which have the same story inside.

~Michael

Details for this four issue series:

Writer(s): Andrew Cosby, Jaime Paglia, Jonathan L. Davis, Brendan Hay

Artist(s): Mark Dos Santos, Diego Barreto

Cost:  Each issue is $3.99 cover priced, with the exception of Issue #1 Limited Edition Cover @ $7.99 .

TPB compilation:  When made available will be $15.99 cover

ADDENDUM to above blog post:  Since posting this blog earlier this morning, artist Michael DiPascale has informed us of the 'retailer incentive' issues with special covers.  These are in addition to the ones mentioned above.  Michael knew of this because he was the cover artist for those very limited 'retailer incentive' issues!  BTW, Michael DiPascale did a great cover featuring Jo for issue #4, which is the only one I've seen so far of those covers ! Thanks for bringing this to our attention Michael!

Softcover TPBs

By Jimmy Gownley

Today my wife Tina is our 'Guest Blogger' with her thoughts on... Volume 4 of "Amelia Rules! When The Past Is A Present".

Amelia Rules! has been a comic book series, and this is a compilation of several comic book issues into Trade Paper Back format, (TBP).   Here's Tina's post:

Amelia Rules by Jimmy Gownley is fun for tweens that parents will approve - but don’t tell the kids!

Volume 4: “When the Past is a Present” is a joy – funny, clever, and heartwarming.

The new kid in school, 4th grader Amelia has her share of problems – her newly divorce mom is dating again – yikes! But she gets by with a lot of help from her zany friends, including a caped semi-super hero.

The pre-teen set will enjoy the storylines – adolescent angst, bullies, dating, running away, first kisses.  Parents will approve the gentle exploration of these and more serious issues – parents going off to war, divorce, and the importance of family.

Beyond the stories, I was impressed by the artwork and writing, which also works on an adult level. Cartoonist Gownley manages to convey detailed storylines of Amelia’s wild imaginings, crazy adventures and secret fears all within the limited space of a graphic novel. It’s well-done indeed.

Amelia Rules! earns a higher grade than little Amelia gets in school: A+!

Enjoy,

~Tina

Special Signing by Jeffrey J Mariotte!

I was emailed two different invitations... from two persons for the 16th Birthday Party that the independent book store 'Mysterious Galaxy' is throwing this upcoming Saturday, May 9th in San Diego, California.

Both invitations showed that there will be a day long celebration being held at the book store, but the second one showcased a Facebook friend of mine that writes both novels and comics!

That would be Jeffrey J Mariotte, who is pictured above at the top right.  His newest book 'Cold Black Hearts' is shown at the above left of this blog post.  He will be at the celebration most of the day, but Jeff says the following about his special special signing hour:

"At noon I'll be on with my friend Alice Henderson. I'll be talking about and signing new supernatural thriller Cold Black Hearts (only on sale that day, by special arrangement, then off sale again until the end of the month, so order your signed copy now!), and Alice's new supernatural thriller is Voracious."

For those of you that have only read Jeffrey's comic books or graphic novels, here's a special treat for you to introduce you to his novel work. You can actually read the first three chapters of Cold Black Hearts for free at http://www.JeffMariotte.com !

As for the rest of the big birthday bash shindig, Maryelizabeth Hart tells us the following:

"As we prepare for the next sixteen years and beyond, we invite you to join us on Saturday, May 9, for our annual all day celebration, featuring some fantastic spotlight authors, special bargains, a new assortment of our fabulous IndieBound "Eat. Sleep. Read." T-shirts, and, of course, cake! Adding to the fun, we will have a quiz about our staff that will test your knowledge of your favorite booksellers (and, of course, prizes for those with the highest scores!)."

And the above doesn't even mention who else will be there...

For those of you that like 'Harry Dresden' publications... well, Jim and Shannon Butcher will be on following Jeffrey!  It is not for certain if any of Jim's 'Harry Dresden' comics will be there, but here is a chance to meet Jim and Shannon in person.  (NOTE: This is a numbered event. Numbers for the signing line are available with purchase of Turn Coat from Mysterious Galaxy.)

With all the above going on, PLUS Jeff there in person, well... I'm definitely pushing attending this birthday bash with Tina, our 'social director', LOL!

The 16th birthday celebration runs from 10:00AM PST to 6:00PM  and will be found at:

Mysterious Galaxy
7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.
Suite #302
San Diego, CA 92111

May 5th Is National Cartoonists Day!

The Yellow Kid 1895

Thanks to Jim Brenneman for bringing to my attention that today is 'National Cartoonists' Day!  Jim is a Facebook Friend whose work I look at on a regular basis.  Besides his Facebook member page, he also has a Facebook Fan Page for his 'Artboy Design' company, as well as his own blog.

Jim is just one of many cartoonists that are celebrating this special day honoring past and present cartoonists!

So the first question you would ask is why today, May 5th?

Well, here’s the scoop:  You see, 'The Yellow Kid', which was the very first color comic strip, was first published today, May 5th, in 1895!

This comic strip was the biggest thing in its' time!   Overnight the comics became a 'staple' feature in every newspaper in the country!

So this important date in cartoonists history made sense to be designated as National Cartoonists Day!

When I was a kid, I read the Sunday Newspaper 'Funnies'.  Several of my favorite strips back then have since been compiled into books.  Even today I still read select strips in our local paper, 'The North County Times', which has some of my favorites, 'Hagar The Horrible', Mort Walker's  'Beetle Bailey', and 'Prince Valiant'.

Some folks decry the 'Internet Revolution' and its' impact on comics!   For myself, although I prefer to read my comic strips and comic books in hard copy format, the web has its' uses.

A lot of newspapers have cut back on the number of comic strips that they publish daily and also in the Sunday Comics section.  So for the strips that I can't hold in my hands to read, I'll check them out on the web as a second source!

Of course, I've also become aware of webcomics that have never been a comic strip or cartoon in the newspapers.  For those of you that haven't read any of them, I've blogged about a few here in my Blog the last several months.

And even for those that don't really like to read cartoons, comic strips, webcomics, comic books or graphic novels, several of those same persons can't help but go to comic book genre movies that have been very popular as of late!

Additionally, today's cartooning reaches way beyond the limited and sadly decreasing newspaper distribution. We all see cartoons in animation, children’s books, greeting cards, and of course in toys and games design!

So on this special day, National Cartoonists' Day, take a moment and email or message a cartoonist and tell them how much you appreciate them and their work!

Thanks Jim Brenneman for your efforts in getting the word out on this special day, and keep up the Great Works in Your Own Cartooning!  For our blog readers, your easiest way to see Jim's works are through his blog at:  http://www.artboyalpha.blogspot.com

For those of you that are new to our blog today, we have an ongoing online 'Comic Con and Pop Culture Convention'  here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts,  and new listings of items for sale in our own online Store

Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts!
