You Can See Alan J Porter At Several Places During Comic-Con!

Continuing My Series On Creators that will be at the Comic Con International San Diego 2009, AND whom I think You should make a point to stop and see...

Is Alan J Porter, writer, who will be at several areas during this year's SDCCI!

First, for those that aren't familar with his work... here's Alan's self bio:  "Publishing software executive by day - Freelance Writer by night. I blame it all on Tom Swift, Stanley Kubrick and Adam West. In the space of a few short months in the late 60’s I borrowed “Tom Swift And The Cosmic Astronauts” from the local library, not longer after I watched “2001”; at the movies, and thanks to Adam West and the Batman TV show discovered comic books!"

Alan sent me his schedule of where he will be at the Con, whether signing, on panels, etc.:

Wednesday, July 22nd
6:00pm - 7:00pm - BOOM! Studios booth #2543 - signing.
9:00pm onwards - ComicCon Tweet Up

Thursday, July 23rd
11:00am - 12:00pm - BOOM! Studios booth #2543- signing
9:00pm onwards - BOOM! Studios party @ Hyatt

Friday, July 24th
11:00am - 12:00pm - BOOM! Studios booth #2543- signing

Saturday, July 25th
11:00am - 12:00pm - BOOM! Studios booth  #2543- signing
1:00pm - 2:00pm - Hermes Press booth - signing

Sunday, July 26th
11:30am - 12:20pm - BOOM! Studios booth #2543- signing
2:00pm - 3:00pm - "The World of CARS" panel - Room 5AB

Please Note:  I have only read Alan's 'World of Cars' work so far that he has written.  Which is what most of his activities around this year's SDCCI is revolving around.

However, Alan will also  have his new book from Hermes Press launching - STAR TREK: A Comics History, which I'll take a look at during the Con because I do like Star Trek!  For those of you not attending the Con, I understand you can find details on this book on the Hermes Press website.

Alan will also be signing copies of "JAMES BOND: The History of the Illustrated 007" at the Hermes Press booth, which I have also not seen, but I'm sure my wife Tina will want to take a look at this as she is a bigger Bond fan than I!

BTW, if you are not one of the 125,000+ persons that are attending this great comic book & pop culture convention this month, then you could take a look at Alan's web site:  http://www.alanjporter.com

However, if you are attending  the San Diego Comic Con International NEXT Week, then please find and then hi-lite on your program map the locations that Alan will be at during different times of the Con!

Please Note:  Days and Times of signings /programs / panels / doors opening etc., are subject to change at any convention, so double check that when you get there!  There is a daily updated printed schedule that is available onsite!

For those that don't know... the 2009 SDCC / CCI-SD is being held at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California.

The address is: 111 W Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA.  Dates of the Con are from July 23rd through July 26th, with a Preview Night July 22nd for 4 day Badge Members Only!  However as this blog post 'goes to press' ALL memberships have been SOLD OUT already!

BTW, unless we are onsite all day & night during a comic con... we do blog daily on comics and pop culture news and events!  Check out our daily blog posts, new listings of comics, graphic novels, Comic Con exclusives and more pop culture items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store

Mark Evanier Once Again With Multiple Programs @SDCC!
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Comic Cons

Click here to see our ENDING SOONEST Comics, Graphic Novels, Toys, Cards and Magazines for sale!

Some Years I Seem to Hang Out At Room 8 more than any other rooms at the San Diego Comic Con International!  That's because Mark Evanier has the 'Best' Ongoing series of panels / programs at Comic-Con IMHO!  Above is a photo from a Friday panel at the 2008 SDCC!  Can YOU guess who the six guests are shown in the photo?    To the right is Mark Evanier close up at the same panel!

Mark Evanier

Will Once Again Be Hosting Multiple Panels At The 2009 San Diego Comic Con International

Click Here to see our NEWLY LISTED Comics, Graphic Novels, Toys, Fanzines and Prozines!

Continuing My Series On Creators that will be at the Comic Con International San Diego 2009, AND whom I think You should make a point to stop and see...

Is Mark Evanier, who You would most likely see at Room 8 of the San Diego Convention Center.  It's almost like he 'lives' there during the Con!

I personally have enjoyed Mark's panels / programs for many years.  I usually can take in the whole hour or so that he conducts each program, with the exception of his programs that overlap with something else happening the other side of the convention center.  And when that's a 1/4 mile away, a person has to leave early unfortunately...

However I have Not yet missed any of the Annual Jack Kirby Tribute Panels Mark has moderated over the years.  That One I will not miss!

Below is a list of what panels Mark will be hosting at Room 8 only. He will be at or co-hosting other panels / programs during the Comic-Con, but those are not listed here:

Thursday, July 23:

2:30-3:30 Sergio and Mark— They're back! Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier reunite for their yearly discussion on all things Groo and beyond. Joining them are their Groo-horts Stan Sakai and Tom Luth. Room 8

3:30-5:00 Golden and Silver Age of Comics— A Comic-Con tradition: the yearly gathering and discussion of the clan of some of the finest comic book creators ever to put pen or typewriter to paper! This year's panel—moderated by Mark Evanier—includes Comic-Con special guests Murphy Anderson (Hawkman), Gene Colan (Tomb of Dracula), Ramona Fradon (Aquaman), Russ Heath (The Haunted Tank), Jack Katz (The First Kingdom), Jerry Robinson (Batman), and Leonard Starr (Mary Perkins On Stage). Both Katz and Starr, known best for their underground comix and comic strip work, respectively, also worked in comics in the Golden and Silver Ages. The stories these people can tell are the stuff of legend...be a part of the yearly magic of this panel. Room 8

Friday, July 24:

11:00-12:00 Spotlight on Gene Colan— He's the dean of comic book artists, the master of shadows and a hallmark of the Marvel Age of Comics! Comic-Con special guest Gene Colan is back at the big show, talking with Mark Evanier and co-host Marv Wolfman about his legendary career in comics. Room 8

12:00-1:30 That '70s Panel— Comic-Con started in the nostalgic decade of the 1970s, and this panel—moderated by Mark Evanier—takes a look at the comics industry way back then. Joining Mark are comic book superstars writer/editor Marv Wolfman, and Comic-Con special guests Steve Leialoha (Howard the Duck), Mike Royer (inker, Jack Kirby's Fourth World books), Doug Moench (writer, Moon Knight, Master of Kung Fu), Nicola Cuti (writer, co-creator, E-Man), and a few surprises. Bell-bottoms optional. Room 8

1:30-3:00 Legends of The Batman— Seventy years ago Bob Kane and Bill Finger introduced the second great superhero in comics: Batman. On the anniversary of this momentous occasion Mark Evanier talks to legendary Batman artists—and Comic-Con special guests—Sheldon "Shelly" Moldoff, Jerry Robinson, and Lew Sayre Schwartz about their time with the Caped Crusader. Room 8

Saturday, July 25:

Mark is on 5 different panels / programs on this day, but none are in Room 8 where he is the sole moderator!  The other panels / programs look to be fun to attend, but are not what I consider his more intimate programs with those he is talking with.

Sunday, July 26:

10:00-11:00 The Annual Jack Kirby Tribute Panel— Fifteen years ago, Jack Kirby left us, but his vision and creations live on to inspire everyone who comes into contact with his work. Mark Evanier (author, Kirby: King of Comics) moderates this annual tribute to the King. Joining Mark this year will be actor Bill Mumy, Kirby inker Mike Royer, editor Steve Saffel, and members of the legendary "5-String Mob," a group of Comic-Con founding members who Kirby immortalized in the pages of Jimmy Olsen: Barry Alfonso, Roger Freedman, William R. Lund, Scott Shaw!, and Mike Towry. Room 4.  Please Note Change of Rooms for this SPECIAL Annual Tribute Program! It's NOT in Room 8!

BTW, if you are not one of the 125,000+ persons that are attending this great comic book & pop culture convention this month, then you should take a look at Mark's web site, where there are links for his other endeavors as well.  I did say this was a blog post on Creators attending the SDCC after all!  Web site:  http://www.povonline.com

However, if you are attending  the San Diego Comic Con International later on this month, then please find and then hi-lite on your program map ROOM 8 as you'll probably find him there most any hour, LOL!

Derek McCulloch

Continuing My Series On Creators that will be at the Comic Con International San Diego 2009, AND whom I think You should make a point to stop and see...

Is Derek McCulloch, who will be at a table with Jimmie Robinson in the Image Comics Booth area.  Some of you comics fans may be a little surprised by the children's book shown above, as most of you will know Derek for 'Stagger Lee', his graphic novel based on the story of Stagger Lee and illustrated by Shepherd Hendrix!  It was this graphic novel that was published by Image Comics in May 2006 that was nominated for several awards, including the Eisner Awards in 2007 and also the Eagle Awards in 2006.  Matter of fact 'Stagger Lee' won several Glyph Comics Awards in 2007 also!

His second graphic novel, 'Displaced Persons', is also being  published by Image Comics.

Derek sent me the following message:

"I'll be there for the whole show. Right now, I'm scheduled to sign at the Shadowline table at 4 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday and at the Comic Relief table at 1 p.m. Thursday. That'll be me signing with Jimmie Robinson in all three instances. I'll likely be signing at the PopGun table at some point too...that's not scheduled yet, but since the PopGun table is right next to my table at the Image booth, it doesn't really make much difference.

Jimmie and I will have a small supply of our children's book, T. Runt! with us. (And a small supply of very rare homemade T. Runt! tote bags.) I'll have a little stack of my GN, Stagger Lee. Jimmie will also have a whole bunch of Bomb Queen trades and merchandise, including the newly released Bomb Queen Omnibust edition and some astounding Bomb Queen skateboards."

So Blog Readers... if you are interested in those limited numbers of T. Runt! items, you gotta get there early!

BTW, if you are not one of the 125,000+ persons that are attending this great comic book & pop culture convention this month, then you could take a look at Derek's web site:  http://www.derekmcculloch.com

However, if you are attending  the San Diego Comic Con International later on this month, then please find and then hi-lite on your program map the Image Comics Booth to see Derek.  You'll be glad You did!  I know I will be adding Derek of creators to see!

Please Note:  Days and Times of signings /programs / panels / doors opening etc., are subject to change at any convention, so double check that when you get there!  There is a daily updated printed schedule that is available onsite!

Will Be Busy As Ever At The 2009 San Diego Comic Con International

Click Here to see our NEWLY LISTED Comics, Graphic Novels, Toys, Fanzines and Prozines!

Continuing My Series On Creators that will be at the Comic Con International San Diego 2009, AND whom I think You should make a point to stop and see...

Is Scott Shaw!, who will be at his booth, which is next to Sergio Aragones's booth of course, PLUS at multiple panels / programs this year at the SDCC!

For those of you that aren't aware of Scott's background, you can find this writeup from him on his Facebook member account Wall: "An experienced professional cartoonist writing and drawing comic books, animation, advertising and toy design, I'm also a historian of comics and cartooning."

I've taken my older kids to Scott's Oddball Comics Slideshow for several years running while they still lived at home.  They would always get a kick out of it when it played in the evening!  Now, my wife Tina and I attend the Slideshow, although it is usually scheduled earlier in the day in recent years at this Con.

Scott has sent me the following schedule for those of You that would like to see the programs he is either hosting or participating on:

SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL ‘09
SCHEDULE FOR SCOTT SHAW!

WEDNESDAY, JULY 22:

It’s preview night! I’ll be setting up business at Table #I (rhymes with “eye”) 08, right next to Sergio Aragonés! Throughout the convention, I’ll be signing my comics, doing complementary cartoon sketches for kids 12 and under and promoting new projects! Look for my ODDBALL COMICS banner!

THURSDAY, JULY 23:

Secret Origins of Comic-Con! -- 11:00-12:30 am --Room 2: How did it all begin? Those who were there in 1969 (most of them teenagers at the time!) have the behind-the-scenes story of the very first meetings, the first mini-con, and the first Golden State Comic-Con at the U.S. Grant in 1970. Panelist include Richard Alf, Barry Alfonso, Greg Bear, Dave Clark, Roger Freedman, Ken Krueger, Scott Shaw!, and Mike Towry, with William R. Lund as moderator.

FRIDAY, JULY 24:

The Cartoon Art Museum Sketch-A-Thon Funderaiser with Bobby London and Scott Shaw! -- 3-4pm -- Table #1930: Bobby and I will be drawing sketches for Comic-Con attendees in exchange for donations to San Francisco’s stellar Cartoon Art Museum.

SATURDAY, JULY 25:

Quick Draw! with Mark Evanier, Sergio Aragonés, Floyd Norman and Scott Shaw! – 11:15-12:30 am – Room 6BCF: We say it each and every year, but it's true: Quick Draw! is the most fun panel you can visit at Comic-Con. Mark Evanier puts Sergio Aragonés, Scott Shaw!, and this year's guest artist, Disney Legend Floyd Norman, through their paces as they draw on the big screen. If you haven't seen this amazing display of cartooning magic, this is the year for you: join the fun!

Oddball Comics -- 3pm – 4:30pm -- Room 7AB:
As seen in the pages of GEEK MONTHLY MAGAZINE, cartoonist Scott Shaw! (CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK, BART SIMPSON COMICS, SIMPSONS SUMMER SHINDIG) brings back his ever-popular digital slide show featuring "the craziest comic books ever published!" See why Stan Lee said, "Wow, True Believers, I thought I'd seen it all, but Scott Shaw's hysterically hilarious Oddball Comics is the wildest, wackiest exposé of some of the craziest comic books I've ever seen! Or, to put it mildly, Scott's outrageous opuses are a blast!"

DIG COMICS screening – 6:30-7:15 – Room 26AB:
Director/host Miguel Cima, associate producer Cory Blake and on-camera interviewee/animation director Scott Shaw! discuss Miguel’s passionate quest for the answer to “Why does America ignore comic books as a legitimate form of entertainment and art?”

SUNDAY, JULY 26:

THE ANNUAL JACK KIRBY TRIBUTE PANEL – 10 -11 am – Room 4: Fifteen years ago, Jack Kirby -- "King of the Comics" -- left us, but his vision and creations live on to inspire everyone who comes into contact with his work. Mark Evanier (author of KIRBY: KING OF COMICS) moderates this annual tribute to the King. Joining Mark this year will be actor/writer/musician Bill Mumy, editor Steve Saffle, inker Mike Royer, Kirby family lawyer Paul S. Levine, a few surprises and the reunion of five of the six members of “The San Diego Five-String Mob” (go figure!), a group of San Diego Comic-Con’s founding members who Kirby immortalized in the pages of SUPERMAN’S PAL, JIMMY OLSEN (William R. Lund, Mike Towry, Roger A. Freedman, Barry Alfonso and Scott Shaw! – minus, unfortunately, John Pound, who had to cancel.)

So when I titled this blog post "Scott Shaw! Will Be Busy As Ever At The 2009 SDCCI !"  I wasn't kidding, wuz I ???

A Personal Note:   My dad worked at the San Diego Zoo for a short time in the Zoo's accounting department.  Scott's dad had been working there longer and was well known to the Zoo's personnel.  Scott, who is a year older than myself, also worked there as one of his first jobs.  I worked at the Zoo starting in my last year of high school and through college.  Talk about a 'small world', and San Diego wasn't that small in the late 1960's!

BTW, if you are not one of the 125,000+ persons that are attending this great comic book & pop culture convention this month, then you should take a look at both of Scott's websites for fun and great deals:  http://www.shawcartoons.com/  and  http://www.oddballcomics.com

However, if you are attending  the San Diego Comic Con International later on this month, then please find and then hi-lite on your program map to see both Scott Shaw! at his booth and at the panels / programs he'll be at.  You'll be glad You did!  I know I will as always!

Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts!!

CONVENTION TIP:  Always make sure that the creators You want to sign Your comics know how to spell your name, even if it is a 'common' name.  You wouldn't believe how many people mis-spell 'Michael' !  Either hold your Con Badge out with the correct spelling as a guide for whoever is signing, or have a card with a legibly written name you want the item signed to.  Below is Michael after having Herb Trimpe sign his Fantastic Four Unlimited Comics at a 2002 San Diego Comic Con International held at the Convention Center in San Diego, California.
