TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3239:

Yesterday I blogged that this past Sunday we attended the 3rd Annual San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Festival in El Monte, California. For that Part 1 of this 2 Part series, please click here.

For earlier posts about who would be there, and what was going to happen there, here is the link to those earlier blog posts, and other links that have picked up my earlier posts.

Now, on to the those that I wasn't able to include in yesterday's post:

First up is Ted Seko. I had not met Ted before, nor read his works.

However, I understand that he is best known for creating comics with B-Movie-like storylines. So I now have one of his comics to check out for possible review in this blog, which is the one he shown holding for the photo. The title of the comic book jumped out at me!

Next is Rafael Navarro.  He is pictured behind his table, with Tina taking a photo to upload to Facebook.

Tina was working so hard at this con, that I had to take a photo of her taking a photo! Thanks again, Tina!

I had met Rafael briefly at the recent San Diego Comic-Con International.  He stopped by for a moment at another booth there, where I was told he had illustrated some Gumby material.  Rafael's own booth was so far away at the Comic-Con from where we were, that we never made it there.

Which is why this smaller more intimate comic con was nice to attend! Rafael suggested I try some of his comics to read and hopefully blog about them?! I've already started his first TPB compiling his first three issues of El Sonambulo. Which I am enjoying.  So it's just a matter of time before I post a blog on that!

I was a little surprised to see Drew Edward Johnson at a table at this comic con.  Pleasantly suprised actually, as I knew he had illustrated the Fantastic Four: 40th Wedding Anniversary Special. Being a Fantastic Four Fan since 1962, I wanted to see how he illustrated them.

Drew is shown holding an original art page from that FF publication that he illustrated, in the photo above.

We also met Bernyce Talley, who is pictured to the left, holding one of her latest publications.

As you can see by this blog post and the one from yesterday, there were many comics creators at this comic book festival.

Additionally several of the exhibitors there were also in other genres, including animation.

Those would include Jim Lujan, pictured near the top of this post. Steven Sievers (a.k.a. Daniel the Turtle, also pictured at the top of this post), and Dahveed Kolodny-Nagy, among others at the festival.

The number of creators at this comic book festival were plentiful in numbers and in quality merchandise for sale at their tables.

Others attending that either Tina or I talked with but not pictured in either of the two parts of this blog series, included Michael Aushenker, John Narcomey, Geo Brawn IV, Jamie Gambell, Dan Smith, Sherm Cohen, Karl Altstaetter, Gerimi Burleigh, among others. There's only so much room for photos & text in a blog post, even one as long as mine are!

There were also raffles for items that were donated by the creators.

Some are shown to the left, being held by Renato Aguirre, of the Nuvein Foundation. The Nuvein Foundation is the Sponsor of this comic book festival.

Also, as mentioned before, there were programs, three in number, that were presented during the day.

At the left, I'm in the back row, while others are listening intently to Raul Aguirre, Jr. who was presenting his program.

Tina and I caught a portion of each program during the day.

The reason that we didn't catch all of the programs is because of two reasons.

First, we were spending so much time at each creator's table, that we were starting to run out of time. Which actually was a good sign that this was a good comic con for us, as we made a lot of new connections, plus got to see several new publications that are out there that we hadn't seen before.

Second, although the choice of music being played by the deejay pictured to the left were good, (Thanks for the Led Zepplein, BTW!), the low lying ceilings inside the Cuban Hall made for a noisier atmosphere inside, where we couldn't fully hear the program speakers above the din of the crowd on the exhibit floor, plus the music that was being played from the outside front of the street access area leading to the Hall doors.

Perhaps, if and when the 4th SGV Comic Book Festival is at a different venue, this noise volume could be lowered?  Again, the choice of music was fine, just that the inside of the building was not built to accomodate crowd noise and music while a program is being presented.

After saying that, and all that I've said in the 1st Part of this blog series, plus today's post...I still gotta say that Tina and I enjoyed ourselves immensely at this 3rd Annual SGV Comic Book Festival!

So...Here is the link to the event on Facebook to see what others have said about the SGV Comic Book Festival.

And this is the link to the web site for the Festival.

Our thanks again, Grasiela and Javier, for inviting us up to this comic festival and for the info / pics that have been used in earlier blogs here publicizing the event!

You both made us feel at home at this Comic Book Festival that we both enjoyed very much.  Thanks for that!

We are also looking forward to attending your 4th Annual SGV Comic Book Festival next year in 2011!

PLUS: My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now over 3,235 total posts in number! I do appreciate your continued reading and support of this Blog!

My thanks to those of YOU that have read today's blog post! I do appreciate that!

For those of you that didn't know me before today... I first set up as a 'dealer' at the 1972 San Diego West Coast Comic Con (SDCC) at the El Cortez Hotel. So I've been around comic conventions for a little while, LOL

My wife Tina and I now have an on-line exhibitor (dealer) table at the first "virtual" comic con titled the "Facebook Comic Con" (FBCC)! Plus I have a chapter in a new book coming out in December of 2010, that is pictured above, "Gotham City 14 Miles"!

You can view our dealer table and interact with us there on Facebook by clicking this link, which takes you to our table named: 'Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing'.

So if YOU are a Facebook member, please 'join' our Facebook Comic Con - Make It So Marketing exhibitor table for updates, specials, links to this blog, and other wall comments that we post every day!

Also, if you are a Facebook member and would like to also join my Facebook Network, feel free to send a 'friend request' to 'Michael D Hamersky'. Please Note: I have reached the maximum of 5,000 Facebook Friends and Fan pages already, so it might be a while before I am able to accept your request. Just send a message along with the invite that you saw my Blog!

Talking about comics: if YOU are a comics creator, (writer, penciler, inker, colorist, letterer, etc.), OR even a Comics / Magazine Publisher, feel free to contact me regarding YOUR works for a possible mention / review!

I've made a special blog post about: "How To Best Submit YOUR Publication For Possible Review!" for those creators / publishers that would like to possibly have their publications mentioned or reviewed. Just click on the link provided in this paragraph!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3239:

As I have mentioned the past few weeks, Tina and I were looking forward to getting away from San Diego this past weekend.  We did get out of town, and this is the first blog post about those that we met there, either for the first time, or other creators that we have met at other comic cons before, and were able to catch up with at this 3rd Annual San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Festival that took place on Sunday, September 19th!

I'm not going to repeat myself here about who was to appear, and what programs the SGV Festival organizers were having at this comic con. Instead, here is the link to those earlier blog posts, and other links that have picked up my earlier posts.

Instead, I first want to thank Grasiela Rodriguez,  who was  the Chairperson for this Year's SGV Comic Book Festival, AND who met both Tina and myself as soon as we entered the Cuban Club Hall building, as seen in the middle photo at the top of this post!  We also stopped by her her own table at the SGV, where she proudly presented her first self-published comic book! Congrats!

Afterwards, Tina and I started from left to right through the hall, where it took us 2 & 1/2 hours to get through the first of the three aisles of creators!  That's because this was more of an intimate comic con, where you could talk longer with the creators, take photos, etc.  That's what I like about smaller cons in smaller settings.

What really made this comic con different from most others that I have attended, is that there were NO comic book dealers set up there. That's right, NO comic book dealers!  The comics creators exhibiting there were basically almost all self-publishers, and had their own creations for sale at their tables.

Here are just a FEW of those that were exhibiting there.  Please Note: Several of the creators there had promo copies for me to read and review for upcoming blog posts.  So, due to limited space in this blog post today, several of those will not be pictured in today's blog, but rather with their publications in review blogs later.

First of all, we went from Left to Right, instead of the 'norm' of right to left you see most con goers travel.

We first met Art (Arturo) Lopez, who doesn't create comic books. Instead he designs figures, that he paints afterwards.  Art also gave a presentation near the end of the day that was very interesting in how he crafted his figures!

Continuing going left, we met Dahveed Kolodny-Nagy, who has several projects going, including of course: Supa Pirate Booty Hunt that I have pictured here before!

Then we met, Javier Hernandez, who has been a Facebook Friend for a while, but I have never met in person!

Javier is the Founder of this SGV Comic Book Festival, as well as a comics creator.

We continued going down the far left aisle, and met several other creators who will be mentioned in upcoming blog posts, after I read their publications.

One I want to mention here now, because it isn't a comic book or graphic novel, (thus I won't be reviewing it in this Blog), is Richard Carradine, who wrote the book 'The Park After Dark: An Unauthorized Guide to the Happiest (Haunted) Place on Earth [Paperback]' which when I thumbed through looked to be a very interesting book on Disneyland. Richard was sharing a table with his friend who is a creator of comics.

Another Facebook Friend, whose works I have review blogged, but never met before in person is Shawn Granger.  He is pictured to the left.

Here are my earlier blog posts on his publications and con appearances.  Good to finally meet you in person Shawn!

Plus Dale Wilson of DWAP introduced me to the newest member of The Antidote Trust, Aposcar Guevara Cruz, who has a graphic novela that I want to read soon, and possibly review here.

Thanks for the intro, Dale!

One of the highlights for Tina and myself, was NOT comic book related!  No Kidding!

That's because the 'Fresh Fries' Van was there for the con goers to buy gourmet french fries.  No Kidding...Seriously!

Tina couldn't believe I was ordering the Peanut ButterCup Fries, (peanut butter / Nutella / powdered sugar on sweet potato fries), but she ended up eating several of mine!

I also had a bite of her 'Goat Cheese Fries' - a combination of Goat Cheese tossed with Raspberry Sauce on french fries.  That wa a hi-lite of our day there at the Festival!

That plus the fact that Tina and I imbed a Cuban drink, a Mojito, which is the National Drink of Cuba, and was smooth plus a great combo with my Peanut ButterCup Fries!  Yeah...I've got a sweet tooth! LOL!

Grasiela told me that all the tables allocated for this comic con were sold out, plus a waiting list of a half dozen that there wasn't room for this year. That should be taken care of next year, when the SGV Comic Book Festival should be moving to a larger venue.  I'll be sure to mention this at that time.

I think I need to wrap up this blog post, as it is mid-morning already, and I have a lot to do today, including shipping out sales made from over the weekend, later today.

So because I have more I want to share here from this comic book festival, I'll wrap Part 1 up for today.

Here is the link to the event on Facebook to see what others have said about the SGV Comic Book Festival.

And this is the link to the web site for the Festival.

Thanks again, Grasiela and Javier, for inviting us up to this comic festival and for the info / pics that have been used in earlier blogs here publicizing the event!

You both made us feel at home at this Comic Book Festival.  Thanks for that!

We are also looking forward to attending your SGV Comic Book Festival next year in 2011!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3238:

Tina and I are getting ready to attend a different comic con this upcoming weekend in Metro Los Angeles...which reminded me that I haven't yet mentioned THIS Long Beach Comic Con's 2nd Annual Event in this Blog!

Before time slips away, I want YOU to make sure to mark YOUR calendars for this Great event.

I say Great, because I was there for the 1st Annual LBCC last year at this time.  It's always hard to publicize a brand new comic con, because not having been to it before, you don't know what to expect, or how much you should promote it...

However, Tina and I have been both to the 1st LBCC in 2009 that covered three days, and the LBCC Expo in early 2010, which was a one day affair.  Both were Great, although on different scales.

That's because the three day con was like the old SDCC that I first selling at back in the early 1970's, with dealers and comics creators that you could talk to on a one-to-one basis, without being trampled on during an over-sized and over croweded comic con!

The one day Expo was perfect sized for an in-between show, and reminded me of the old San Diego Quarterly Cons in the 1990's. I found myself talking to creators that I couldn't even get close to at larger shows without standing in long lines to do so!

So Tina and I have definitely booked the last weekend in October to attend this 2nd LBCC.  We suggest YOU check out the links below, both to their Facebook Fan Page, and to their own web site.  I'll be blogging more about this upcoming con in the weeks to come.  This is just first notice for you to check it out for the 2010 event and buy your membership online!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3237:

Tina and I are looking forward to getting away from San Diego this upcoming weekend.  First to seeing family in the LA area, who happen to be very close to the upcoming 3rd Annual San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Festival that is happening on Sunday ONLY!

In case you missed my earlier blog about this Comic Festival...Here's the Press Release supplied to me by Grasiela Rodriquez, who is the Chairperson for this Year's SGV Comic Book Festival!

"Summer’s not over yet! Join the Nuvein Foundation for one last hurrah! at the 3rd Annual San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Festival!

Free admission to this event will give comic book readers and artists a place to learn from published artists to learn tricks of the trade!

The San Gabriel Valley Comic Book festival is back for a third year, taking place Sunday, September 19, 2010 from 11:00am to 5:00pm at the Club Cubano del Valle de San Gabriel (Cuban Club) in El Monte.

Comic book readers and amateur cartoonists of all ages will be interacting with artists from throughout Southern California, displaying the best in self-published comics, including works from members of the SGV Cartoonistas. There will also be workshops for aspiring comic artists!

The San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Festival is made possible through the efforts of The Nuvein Foundation for Literature and the Arts, its Events Committee and the hard-working volunteers at Nuvein Foundation. Proceeds from this event and others produced by The Nuvein Foundation go towards educational scholarships awarded to students in the creative arts and towards bringing other cultural events to enrich the quality of life in the communities of the greater San Gabriel Valley.

Refreshments will be provided by the Cuban Club along with a special appearance by the Fresh Fries truck, LA’s only gourmet French fry lunch trunk. The Cuban Club of San Gabriel Valley is located at:10960 Lower Azusa Road, El Monte, California 91731, at the intersection of Santa Anita Avenue, near the El Monte Airport.

I saw the Featured  Participants listed on the web site, and asked Grasiela for the full list of creators that are scheduled to be exhibiting there.  Here's her reply:

"Our artist roster this year consists of:
Rafael Navarro,
Geo Brawn IV, Raul Aguirre Jr., Javier Hernandez, Jim Lujan, Neil Segura, Grasiela Rodriguez, Michael Aushenker, Jose Cabrera, Jamie Gambell, Dan Smith, Sherm Cohen, Bernyce Talley, Lance Sawyer, Karl Altstaetter, Adonna & Arvie of Agimat, Shawn Granger, Dahveed Kolodny-Nagy/Toy Hell, John Narcomey, Rob Zailo and Acee Cruz."

She also followed up with what programs they will be having:

"We have 2 wonderful workshops in the works, <--I say that because one is by Rafael Navarro who is still working that out! Another workshop is "Drawing for Animation" by Raul Aguirre Jr., you can see and learn more of Raul on Man vs. Art <--The infamous blog."

A few additional persons who will be exhibiting there have been announced since the above was first messaged to me:  Dale Wilson of DWAP Productions, Aposcar Cruz, and Ted Seko.

I have blogged about several of the above creators before, (see the names with links for those posts), plus a couple are new Facebook Friends, so it will be nice to meet them in person!

I'm suggesting highly that YOU attend this comic con if you are in the Los Angeles Metro Area on THIS Sunday, September 19th.  You can't beat the admission price...that's for sure!  And after having review blogged the publications that several of them have given me at other comic cons or mailed to me...YOU are in for a treat at this Festival.  Especially since it is a smaller intimate con, so YOU can have more face time to meet, talk, and look at the publications before purchasing!

Here's the link to the event on Facebook.

And this is the link to the web site for the Festival.

Tina and I hope to see YOU there also...We'll be walking around, taking photos for this Blog, and check out the creators tables.  Stop me and say hello.  I should be easy to recognize with the indigo colored polo shirt that has 'Comic Book Collectors Blog .com' in white letters on the front pocket area!

ADDENDUM added Friday Morning - September 17th - Another update from Grasiela:

"I have another artist who signed up - Richard Carradine.

Also another presentation has been added by Michael Aushenker & Jose Cabrera <--They will present a unique slide show that showcases some of the history of their cartoon influences. Everything from Tin Tin to Popeye, Mad Magazine and Sesame Street will be covered (Attached is the flyer for the presentation).

Also we are featuring a live art demonstration by local artist Art Lopez, He is a fine artist and sculptor who makes exciting works! Mainly fangoria-type zombies and such."

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3236:

I've already mentioned that one of the great pleasures I receive at visiting comic-cons, no matter what the size of them, is visiting the sections named 'Artists Alley', and 'Small Press' or 'Indy Aisles'.

It's even better when I find a comic book that my youngest son can also enjoy, as so many comics today are not aimed at his age group. This is Vinnie's 'Take' on a promotional comic magazine that we found at the SDCC in July.

------------------------

While at the San Diego Comic Con International, my dad and I went through the Small Press Pavillion and Artist Alley.

While there, he picked up some comics, magazines, and all sorts of things for possible review, and this happened to be one of them. The title of this comic book is "Physics Quest 2008: Nikola Tesla and the Electric Fair." It is a "promotional comic book," although, it is the size of a Magazine.

The sponsors of this comic book are the American Physical Society. Their website is www.aps.org. You can even download this comic at www.physicscentral.com/physicsquest. We talked to the creators, who also did the promotional comic "Spectra #1," which my dad blogged about, and can be found here.

This book was very interesting, and I feel it would be a great study tool, as it is probably more interesting to read this, than a chapter from a textbook. Now to go more "in-depth."

Front Cover - It shows most of the main characters; Nikola Testla, Thomas Alva Edison, "Mark Twain", and George Westinghouse Jr. For the background, it has a flash of electricity or lightning, whichever it may be, and a tower. I feel both tie up the picture nicely.

Inside Front Cover - It shows the sponsor's title and logo. It also states their website and address, as well as the website to download this comic for free (which I mentioned above). I feel it is nice they allow you to download a copy of this for free, as this is a promotional comic after all.

Splash Page - States the title, and credits for who did what. All the people mentioned who helped with the production of this are Rebecca Thompson-Flagg, Christopher DiScenza, Justin Reeder, Kerry G Johnson, and Alan Chados. It again states the website, and in fine print, says this comic is copyrighted.

Interior Pages - The first page has an "About the Comic Book" page as well as the bibliography for their research on Nikola Tesla. The second page is an informant about Nikola, telling about his life. The third page has a picture of Tesla reading a book in front of his spiral-coiled tranformer. The fourth page and onward contains the story and art, which are both great. They presented it in a way a kid might enjoy reading it, which may be the reason I enjoyed it so much. In the way the pages are numbered, the Splash Page is Page 1, meaning a total of 12. The actual comic is only 8 pages, however, making it a quick read, which is probably why it works as a promotional comic book.

Inside Back Cover - The Inside Back Cover is blank, so I don't really have much to say about it.

Back Cover - It has a picture of Tesla, and basically uses the same words used in the "About Nikola Tesla" page to "summarize" it. It was almost as though someone "cut-and-pasted" the more interesting parts from it onto the back cover. This part wasn't as impressive, but it was fine if someone was to read that to see what it's about, and if they wanted to pick it up or not.

Storyline - The way they put it all together made it seem as though tis was the only event in his life, although they made "quick facts" about current topics on most pages.

To summarize this all, it was a great read, had wonderful art, and was presented in a way children could enjoy it, making it a great study tool. This is great if you are having a test or something related to a test about Nikola Tesla, or even electricity in general, as this gave information about currents and even has a graph of how two kinds of currents work. This would also make a good gift for someone interested in science or electricity, or have Tesla as a "rolemodel" of sorts. This is even good if you want to "spark" you or a friend's interest in science, as I can almost guarentee this is much more fun than reading from a textbook.

I give this a Comic Book Grade of Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 scale.

Vinnie!

----------------------

Thanks Vinnie for guest blogging here today, and giving us your thoughts on this promotional comic book magazine from a tween's POV!

Again, my thanks to Rebecca Thompson-Flagg and Kerry G Johnson for introducing this promotional comic book to us at this year's San Diego Comic Con International!  Looks like Vinnie enjoyed this as much as I did your Spectra #1 promotional comic book!

Besides the web links that Vinnie mentioned above...The APS web site is at:  APS.org for more info. Just type in 'Physics Quest' or 'Spectra comic' in the search bar on the portal page to see what links they have to stories about the creators and the comic books produced so far.

BTW, If you liked Vinnie's 'Take' on this promotional comic book magazine, he's also review blogged several other publications so far this year.

Including the graphic novel as shown to the left.  Here's his review blog on this publication: Vinnie's Take on Berona's War: Field Guide.  After reading that and thinking that this is something YOU would like to read or give as a gift, here's a link to where you can purchase it online! Berona's War: Field Guide!

Also...If YOU liked his review on this publication today, you may enjoy reading Vinnie's reviews on: Clutch Cargo, The All New Super Friends Hour Season 1 DVDThe Ultimate Underdog Collection Volume 1Planet HulkCoraline, Ponyo, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Sonic the Hedgehog TPB Vol 1, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, just to name a recent few!!!

PLUS...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now over the 3,230 total posts in number! I do appreciate your continued reading and support of this Blog!
