TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3270:

Okay... The 2010 Long Beach Comic Con, (LBCC), is now part of Comic Book History!

Tina and I enjoyed this 'Sophmore Year' of the LBCC, that took place once again at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California.

We attended all three days and were there from approximately opening time until closing time each day.

I found the 'volunteer greeters' at the front door entrance of the Convention Center with their 'May I Help You?' hand held signs to be just one of many ways the promoters of this comic con welcomed new attendees.  Nice touch!

The line for membership badges went smoothly on the first day for us.

However, Tina's badge tore on the 2nd day, and we went to the membership booth once again, to see what could be done about that.  It appeared that this tearing problem had already been found out and resolved, because it only took two minutes before we were on our way back to the exhibit floor!

The exhibit floor was laid out a little strangely, as it opened up in a 'V' shape as the attendees came in.  However, that was due to the Long Beach Convention Center, not the LBCC promoters.

The bigger publishers / vendors had the front area, which could be considered the 'prime real estate' of the con when the attendees first walked in.  Which was okay for me, as I was more interested in what lay behind those booths...The Artist Alley, or in this year's case, the two separated Artist Alleys.

I thought that was a little strange, but my wife, Tina LoSasso, said that was a smart marketing move, to improve traffic flow, and to encourage people to walk the entire floor and not to avoid sections.

The Artists Alley sections were even better than last year! Though the two sections put together were bigger in size, the ability to sop and see individual creators at their tables was still a fun experience!

The comic book vendors were interspersed pretty well.  Those interested in buying back issues could delve through dozens of $1 boxes for reading pleasure, and there were a few 'big name dealers' there also for harder-to-find collectible back issues.

The 'media stars' were not large in number, because this was a 'true comic con', not a 'pop culture con'.  I enjoyed seeting those that were there, including Dan (Grizzly Adams) Haggerty, Herb (Lt. Boomer) Jefferson Jr., and William (Falconetti) Smith, of the ones that were there.

'Bigger Name' comics creators were also there, although some like Stan Lee were there only on a specific day.  Stan had flown in from a different comic con in Detroit the day before. Busy guy!

I had already seen Stan at the opening ceremony for the 1st LBCC last year, so did not attend the few mini-events hew as at, as those were xtra fee to be paid events.  (Photo ops, etc.).

We did however attend some of the panels and programs that were staged during the three days.

Those included: 'Listen to Jimmy Palmiotti - Amanda Conner Spotlight', 'The IDW Publishing Sneak Peak', 'Secret Origins: The History of DC Comics', 'Mike Mignola Spotlight', 'Getting Your IP Recognized with Jimmy Palmiotti', among others.  I plan on mentioning / blogging on some of those separately in the future, so just listing them here for now.

I kind of liked having the panels separate from the exhibit hall, but the suggested path to walk around the building itslef to go to the next building that housed the panels was a little ways to travel. We did find that leaving through the back door of the exhibit hall to go more directly to the panel rooms was easier, but it was not suggested.

Unfortunately there was another Convention occuring during the same weekend at the Long Beach Convention Center, which had the access blocked from Comic-Con attendedees to use.  Still, it was enjoyable to be away from the exhibit floor.

Talking about the exhibit floor, there were LBCC Exclusives for sale at this con. There was quite a few attendees buying those items when we walked passed that booth a few times.

So I could see there was something for everyone at this year's LBCC, even 'Halloween Treats' for attendees.  this was really good for those families that brought their youngsters in for 'Trick or Treating' on Sunday.

Regarding the 'buzz' at this con.  I've been going to comic cons / pop culture cons for several years, (I first set up as a comic book dealer at the SDCC in 1972.) Not one of them has ever been everything to everyone, whether you were a guest, an exhibitor, a publisher, a struggling artist, or an established comic book dealer.

I found during the three days of this con, that there were those who were really pleased with either the networking, sales, exposure to their work, etc. There were those who were OK with their experience at the con. Plus there were those who didn't find this 2nd year con to their liking. I'm speaking of those that paid money to set up at a table or booth at this con, and either were 'newbies' or 'old timers' and either didn't know how to market themselves or were old pros at it.

Just having a table at a comic con of this size does not guarantee you sales, or even exposure for that matter.  Once again I found those in Artist Alley too busy to even look up  in between illustrating commission sketches to acknowledge passerb by.  That's why there should be a 'tag-team' effort at those tables if you are a struggling artists.  Either your girlfriend or wife or best friend to engage those glancing at your table while you sketch, or realize that commission sketches to pay for your way and only that do not build your 'brand'.  But I digress...

As an 'attendee', I personally found so many things at this 2nd LBCC that I liked, that I am looking forward to the 2011 LBCC next October near the Halloween Day, as well as the April 2011 LBCC Expo, which is a one day affair.

I would suggest to those of YOU that didn't attend this year's Con, to think about adding this Con to YOUR 2011 Con schedule now, either as an exhibitor, artist, or dealer.  I've already been told that the panels / programs will be brought closer to the exhibit floor, (hopefully upstairs), and that other kinks will be addressed.

I personally found this 2nd Annual LBCC a fun comic con to attend, and it still reminds me of the one I started at in San Diego before it got way too big after it moved to the San Diego Convention Center.

Again, the above paragraphs are my own personal opinion, which may not see eye to eye with others that attended or were paying participants, but those are my thoughts!

Good Show is what I say to those that were involved in putting this show on!  And Thanks!

-------------------

As an ending note: I've already blogged about who was going to be in Artists Alley at Blog #3266.

I've also blogged about a few of the panels / programs that were being presented at Blog #3257.

Also, I blogged about the guests that would be appearing back on Friday, September 17th, in Blog #3238. However, that list was updated on the LBCC's own web site since then.

Plus there were many others that were attending, and for the full list, please see this link, which will take you to the LBCC's own page for 'guests' at this year's LBCC.

I'll be posting additional pics here in my blog about those that I met at the LBCC, and also at my own Facebook Group Page, at Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing.

I have already mobile Facebooked photos during the LBCC.  Unfortunately the photos first are uploaded to my personal profile page, which is maxed out at 5,000 Facebook Friends and Fan Pages 'Liked', so I can't accept many more 'Friends Requests'.  Which is one of the reasons why I have a Facebook Group Page in addition!

Here's the link to the Long Beach Comic Con on Facebook. Please take a look and click the 'Like' button while YOU are there!

And this is the link to the web site for the 2010 LBCC. Which should be updated for the 2011 LBCC Expo in the upcoming year, as it will happen in April.  The 3rd Annual LBCC 3 day affair is scheduled for the end of October 2011 again.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3269:

I've already blogged about who will be in Artists Alley at the 2010 Long Beach Comic Con that starts TODAY(!), and runs through Sunday at Blog #3266.

I've also blogged about a few of the panels / programs that are being presented at Blog #3257.

Also, I blogged about guests that will be appearing back on Friday, September 17th, in Blog #3238. However, that list has been updated on the LBCC's own web site since then.

Here's my last blog on the LBCC, before heading up there later today.  That's because the 'Ribbon Cutting Ceremony' is scheduled to start at 12:45 PM, and I want to be there!

The above three photos are ones that I chose to present here, because to me, they are 'Special Guests'!

Each of them have spent time with me at earlier Long Beach Comic Cons, (either the 2009 LBCC or the earlier 2010 LBCC Expo), or in Herb's case...it's about time he appeared at the LBCC!  I usually see him at other cons, and wanted to include him in today's blog, as someone that I recommend YOU stop and see!

Yes, there are many others that are attending, and for the full list, please see this link, which will take you the LBCC's own page for 'guests' at this year's LBCC.

Others on that same web page that I have met before, and suggest YOU make a special effort to see in person would be: Joel Adams, Ray-Anthony Height, Stan Lee (special ticket required), Wilce Portacio, Mark Waid, Marv Wolfman, and Bernie Wrightson! I could suggest more, but even I can't see it all!

Those that I haven't met, but would like to would be: Bruce Boxleitner, Howard Chaykin, Gary Lockwood, Danny Miki, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Joe Rubinstein!

Please Note:  Posting lists like these could always lead to someone getting miffed that they weren't on it.  I'm only mentioning some of those that are on the guests page at the LBCC web site.  There are MANY others that are listed on the Artists Alley Page that I definitely want to see, but this blog was on the 'guests list' persons only.

I'll post new pics here in my blog if I get to meet those named above, and also at my own Facebook Group Page, at Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing.

Which BTW, I'll be mobile Facebooking photos to during the LBCC.  Unfortunately the photos first are uploaded to my personal profile page, which is maxed out at 5,000 Facebook Friends and Fan Pages 'Liked', so I can't many more 'Friends Requests'.  Which is one of the reasons why I have a Facebook Group Page!

Here's the link to the event on Facebook. Please take a look and click the 'Like' button while YOU are there!

And this is the link to the web site for the 2010 LBCC.

Tina and I hope to see YOU there also...We'll be walking around, taking photos for this Blog, and checking out the creators tables in Artist Alley for sure.  Stop me and say hello.  I should be easy to recognize with the indigo colored polo shirt that has 'Comic Book Collectors Blog.com' in white letters on the front pocket area!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3268:

In Blog #3247, I posted that YOU could start pre-ordering YOUR copy of the upcoming book 'Gotham City 14 Miles', (referred to as GC14M in this post), at your LCBS (Local Comic Book Shop)!

Then in Blog #3265, I stated that being a comic book / graphic novel / books on comics reviewer, I was able to obtain a 'review copy' .pdf of this upcoming book.  I thus posted a 'review blog' on this upcoming book.

As stated in that post, and now here in this post, I am also one of the fourteen contributors to this GC14M book.

However, this is NOT a 'review blog' today for this book.  It is an 'unabashed plug' for the book, with the '7 More Reasons To Love the Upcoming GC14M Book'!

Of course since I'm a contributor, (Mile Marker #10), as well as a fan of the TV Show, I've been blogging about this book now for what seems quite a while...(Click here for the almost 500 links on Google!)

Enough of the disclaimers, you now know why this book has been on my personal horizon for months now.

PLUS: I had to run one more blog on this book, as this is the FINAL WEEK for YOU to pre-order the book at YOUR LCBS! So here's my 2nd post on the GC14M book after reading the preview copy:

As stated before in my earlier posts, this GC14M book is written as a series of fourteen essays.  That's 14 chapters on the TV Series with 14 different topics.  Which was a great marketing tool to use the Mile Marker shown in the TV Series as the title!

I have already posted the first "7 Reasons YOU Should Love the New GC14M Book". Those were MY personal choices to highlight first, and were not meant to slight any of the essayists that contributed. I enjoyed reading all of the 14 Mile Markers.

This ComicBookCollectors.com blog covers far more than most blogs, as it is presented in a web page format, not just a 'blog paragraph' teaser with a link to someone else's article or blog. But I still have a 'space limit' on how much I can post in each blog.  You can see ALL of the 14 Mile Markers & their authors at my Blog #3247.  And No, I didn't post my Mile Marker #10 as one of the Mile Markers being mentioned first in Blog #3265!

Here's those Mile Markers from the 'Table of Contents' in their numerical order that comprise my second '7 Reasons Why YOU Should Love the New GC14M Book'!:

Mile Marker No. 1: “Bats in Their Belfries — The Proliferation of ‘Batmania’” by Robert Greenberger. Covers the genesis of the show and the explosion of Batmania. This was a good first essay, setting the stage for the reader as to what to expect from the other essays in this book.  Good history, and background research made this an enjoyable first Mile Marker to read.

Mile Marker No. 3: “Such a Character — A Dissection and Examination of Two Sub-Species of Chiroptera homo sapiens” by Jim Beard.  Hey, what I can say about my Editor's own essay?!  It definitely was 'A Dissection and Examination', a very learned essay, yet also enjoyable to read.

Mile Marker No. 5: “Aunt Harriet’s Film Decency League” by Becky Beard.  A deeply researched essay on the older actors who were guest villains on this TV Show.  This would be a good intro to read before watching the individual episodes, so that you would know the actors works before seeing their perfomances.  I learned several background facts on these actors, who when I first saw them in this show, were from my folks' generation, not mine.  So I didn't appreciate seeing them in their episode as much.  Now I do.

Mile Marker No. 7: “Known Super-Criminals Still at Large” by Chuck Dixon. Compares and contrasts TV versions with comic book portrayals.  A good personal insight into this topic, by a comics creator who was involved with the Batman Comics for years.

Mile Marker No. 10: “Holy Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor!” by Michael D Hamersky. Addresses the topic of youth culture as presented in “Batman.” Hey, what can I say here?!  I'm a little prejudiced here...because I know that I finished my 'final' first draft of this at the Marriott Hotel in Downtown San Diego on Preview (Day) Night at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con International!  It was fun re-watching the TV episodes, but it was tough to find it in DVD format to watch the episodes in order.  I ended up buying a collector to collector copy, because those companies that own the rights to this show still haven't agreed to publish an authorized version for fans of this show!

Mile Marker No. 11: “Gotham City R&D” by Michael Johnson. If you like gadgets, (and who doesn't?!), then this essay is for you! An in depth essay is presented here.

Mile Marker No. 12: “Theatre of the Absurd – ‘Batman: The Movie, 1966’” by Rob Weiner. Rolls film on the 1966 feature film.  The film itself is one that I haven't watched that much over the years since it first came out.  It is too long for me to watch, (I believe it is like 5 TV episodes in length), and just didn't work that well when 'standing the test of time' for me personally.  However, Rob does a good job on his take on the film in this essay!

Those are the 7 Additional Reasons that YOU Should Love THIS book, GC14M. Put together by an Editor that defintely has a love for this TV Series, and by those 14 essaysists that wanted to contribute their thoughts in print.

Oh, there is also an 'Afterword' by Jeff Rovin, co-author of Adam West’s “Back to the Batcave,” which offers a few personal anecdotes about the show and working with West.  A fun read and I'm glad it was included.

Additionally there is a first Appendix:  The Episode Guide by Joe Berenato. A rundown of episodes, with airdates and fun facts.  This is a 'Must' for this book, because after re-introducing the TV Series via a series of serious essays to fans and hopefully to future fans of the show... You gotta have that Episode Guide!

So in summary... The above paragraphs present 7 more of the 14 Mile Markers that I have space to mention here this morning. They are also good reading, and are presented in this second blog post because of space limitations in this blog format.  If you haven't read the earlier blog posts referenced at the beginning of this post, I urge you to do so.

I'm posting this additional blog this morning, because this is the FINAL WEEK for YOU to pre-order this book from Your LCBS, (Local Comic Book Shop).  That is the way this book will be distributed for 2010.  In early 2011 it will be distributed via a more 'mainstream' venue.  But I wanted YOU to know how to get it earlier!

So this week, when YOU go to your LCBS to pick up your weekly shipment of comics, don't forget to pre-order this upcoming book that is due to arrive at the end of December!

Gotham City 14 Miles / ISBN 9780578064611 / $22.95 MSRP

Also, in the meantime please feel free to check out the Facebook Fan Page for Gotham City 14 Miles and 'liking' it!

PLUS...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now over the 3,265 total posts in number! I do appreciate your continued reading and support of this Blog!

For those of you that didn't know me before today, I first set up as a 'comic book dealer' at the 1972 San Diego West Coast Comic Con (SDCC) at the El Cortez Hotel. So I've been around comic conventions for a little while, LOL

My wife Tina and I, (both pictured at an early 2000s SDCC), now have an on-line exhibitor (dealer) table at the first "virtual" comic con titled the "Facebook Comic Con" (FBCC)!

You can view our dealer table and interact with us there on Facebook by clicking this link, which takes you to our table named: 'Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing'.

Plus as mentioned in today's blog...I have a chapter in a new book coming out in December of 2010, that is pictured above, "Gotham City 14 Miles"!  Click here to become a 'Fan' of the GC14M Facebook Fan Page!

So if YOU are a Facebook member, please 'join' our Facebook Comic Con - Make It So Marketing exhibitor table for updates, specials, links to this blog, and other wall comments that we post every day!

Also, if you are a Facebook member and would like to also join my Facebook Network, feel free to send a 'friend request' to 'Michael D Hamersky'. I am reaching the maximum of 5,000 Facebook Friends soon, and I don't want YOU to be left out!

Talking about comics: if YOU are a comics creator, (writer, penciler, inker, colorist, letterer, etc.), OR even a Comics / Magazine Publisher, feel free to contact me regarding YOUR works for a possible mention / review!

I've made a special blog post about: "How To Best Submit YOUR Publication For Possible Review!" for those creators / publishers that would like to possibly have their publications mentioned or reviewed. Just click on the link provided in this paragraph!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3267:

Yesterday morning while getting ready to pack up and leave for the day, my wife told me that there was a special feature on TV. This was about 8:15 AM.

She was watching the feature on the Today Show, and knew that I would want to check it out...

That's because six persons involved with the 'Back To The Future' (BTTF) were in the feature.

I've copied the segment to share with you here:

Please Note:  The segment is 11:49 in time length.

Anyways, I had already posted my blog yesterday morning before that time... Yet the segment followed me throughout the day as I thought about this Trilogy.

It's been 25 years since the BTTF 1 film was released.  it is one of the few movies that has stood the test of time for me.

When I say 'the test of time', I mean this is one of the few films that when catching it on TV when channel surfing, I will see a scene and stop to watch the film.  Only a few films, maybe a dozen, have that durability of making me stop to do that.

I hate catching a film that has already started, or for that matter a TV series that has already aired a few epiosdes or even a season.  I won't watch a TV series that I'm suggested to view, unless I rent a DVD first to catch up!

So yeah, I watched all three of the BTTF Franchise on the Big Screen at my local theaters.  At one point I even had a lot of the 'collectibles' about this show, including of course, 'comic books', like the Harvey Limited Series pictured at the top left of this blog post.  Hey, doesn't every truly successful TV Show Or Film Series have a comic book or comic book series?!  LOL!

It was fun to see the above segement on the Today Show yesterday. Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, director Robert Zemeckis and theme song singer Huey Lewis were all there to talk about the film on this, the 25th Anniversary.

It was also fun for me to see the DeLorean at the 2010 Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con. I've included two photos I had Tina snap of me in front of it in this post.

I have all 3 of the BTTF still on VHS tape. No, I haven't gotten around to purchasing them on DVD.  During the years I've gotten a little tired of buying my favorites in each of the formats that come out, except for my Fantastic Four cartoons, which because of the amount of VHS tapes for the multiple series, grew to too many boxes to easily store.

I still pull the BTTF VHS tapes out every other year to watch once, as re-watching those films remind on how good a film trilogy can be.

If you don't have this film series for your film library, I would suggest picking one up.  And no, we don't sell it in our online store, sorry!  It's stood the test of time for me, and I have shared it with each of my kids as they grew up.  It is a 'Family Fare' film, yet isn't dumbed down.  It truly has stood that 'test of time' I was telling you about above.

My thanks to all of those involved in this film 25+ years ago when it was in development.  And to those six that are featured in the segment above that are currently publicizing the Anniversary.

Also, my thanks to those that have transferred the BTTF to the comic books and magazines, that help those that weren't there at the beginning 25 years ago like I was.

Here's a link to the two comic book series that Harvey Comics published.

I'm a little short on time this morning, (pun intended!), so will have to get back to those post to add additional links in the future on the other comics / magazines...

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3266:

I realized that I wasn't going to be able to list everyone individually that is going to be in Artists Alley at the upcoming Long Beach Comic Con at my Facebook Group Page.  So I'm posting the current full list here in my blog today!

SCHEDULED TO APPEAR:

Whew!  That is a LOT of creators scheduled to appear at this upcoming event!

I know several of them, and have met others at other cons.  There are also several I've never met, so you know where I'll be for at least one day.  Always looking for good blog material!

Oh...I have to repost the Long Beach Comic Con Show Hours so that YOU could book at least one day to meet them!

Here are the show hours: Friday, 10/29 Opening Ceremony at 12:45 PM; Show Opens at 1:00 PM - 8:00 PM; Saturday, 10/30 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM; Sunday, 10/31 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM!

Tina and I have definitely booked this last weekend in October to attend this 2nd Annual LBCC.  We suggest YOU check out the links below, both to their Facebook Fan Page, and to their own web site for additional info and costs.  I'll be Facebooking more about this upcoming con in the days to come at my own Facebook Group Page:  Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing

This is just an additional notice for you to see who is scheduled to appear in Artists Alley, (subject to change, of course!).

Here's the link to the event on Facebook.

And this is the link to the web site for the 2010 LBCC.

Tina and I hope to see YOU there also...We'll be walking around, taking photos for this Blog, and checking out the creators tables in Artist Alley for sure.

So I may not make all of the programs that I blogged about before in Blog #3257... But please...Stop me and say hello.  I should be easy to recognize with the indigo colored polo shirt that has 'Comic Book Collectors Blog .com' in white letters on the front pocket area!

---------------------------

Again, this is just the Latest Notice about this upcoming event.  I'll be sure to post more notices at my own Facebook Group Page as the weekend nears. And at least one follow up blog afterwards on the event itself.  Plus any comic books / promos that we pick up at the LBCC from the creators for possible review blogs!

If YOU are exhibiting at this LBCC, feel free to message me on Facebook or send me an email so I can add you in future posts!
