TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3304:

Vinnie is with us this weekend, and has his first blog ready to be posted.

I appreciate his reading and submitting his guest blog(s) for publishing here!

------------------------

Welcome one and all, to "My Take" on Space Punks #1!

As I was looking through comics to review for my dad's blog, this comic jumped out at me. This was the only comic in the large stack of comics to possibly review,  that was not realistic looking.

It also 'felt' age appropriate, as there were no blood, guts, gore, or any other thing I'd rather not see.

After reading just a short bit of it, I realized that this was a comic book series of major foolishness. Although there was that "Cartoon-y" feel to the art, which makes it seem suitable to young children, it is somewhat the opposite. There is a little bit of mild language, but most of it is censored with random symbols. Anyways, I will now describe the art and story, as well as the covers and interior pages.

The Front Cover is what mainly caught my attention. It looked 'cartoony', which if you have read a previous blog post of mine, you would know I love the style. It depicted half of a battle scene, that is continued on the Back Cover. More information on that later though. The name, "Space Punks" also made me interested. It made me think there was some mischief going on. My suspicions were correct.

The Inside Front Cover shows the logo seen on the Front Cover for the Space Punks. Below that, it states each job of the four people who worked on it. I now know that the creator of Space Punks is Josep Blas. Beneath all those "credits" is where Josep introduces the characters and their names. It helped, as some conversations you didn't see who was talking. You would have had to seen what names each voice was saying, so you could know which character was which. Below that is the copyright information, so let's move on to the Interior Pages.

The Interior Pages, sadly are just in black and white. As the cover was in color, I figured the rest of the book would be too. Despite the conditions that were well fit for being a dull and boring comic, this was great instead!

Some of the art had looked like sketches straight off the drawing board, but just something about it made me grow on it. I liked the story, and especially the dramatic and suspenseful ending.

Reading this makes me want to read the second and third book. However good it may have been, I think the writer could've left out a couple censored words. Not just the censor, but the word being censored as well. Maybe my age isn't the age group expected for this? I'm not entirely sure. Whatever the case is, it was still definitely a good comic.

The Inside Back Cover has two, what I believe are, advertisements. It is split in half equally, horizontally. The top one is for the Space Punks.

Josep stated his thanks for his readers, er well, reading. He also left his email for anyone to leave their thoughts for him about it. The advertisement below that was for Blambot, a comic lettering, font, and logo design company. I found it funny, as it was talking about radioactive Kung-Fu chihuahuas bombing an orphanage. Well, I at least found the part about the radioactive Kung-Fu chihuahuas funny...

The Back Cover, as I've already mentioned above, is a continuation of the Front Cover's image, being a 'wrap-a-round' cover.  This shows the enemies, and the rest of the battle scene. These are the same enemies you would have seen in the comic, had you read it. I had liked this whole battle scene, as it was in color, and not just black and white.

It was quite strange seeing it this way as a wrap-a-round cover, as lately, all I've seen on the back of a comic is either advertisements or other promotional stuff. I much prefer this, but any extra money for them helps, I guess, in recovering the cost of printing.

Overall, I really enjoyed this first issue of "Space Punks". I would have better enjoyed it, had it been in color, though. I liked the art and the story, and really don't have much to complain about. I would give this comic a comic book grade of a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM), a 9.0 out of a 10.0 grading scale.

And hopefully, Josep can make a color version too! I haven't seen the Interior Pages of issue 2 or 3, but hopefully they are in color!

I thank you all for reading my review.

~Vinnie.

NOTE From Michael: You can check out more on this comic book series from the publisher via their web site at: SpacePunks.com.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3303:

I met Phil Ortiz at the 'Cartoonists Across America' booth during the recent 2nd Annual Long Beach Comic Con (LBCC), held in Long Beach, California!

Aditionally, Phil Ortiz was with Phil Yeh in the booth, as the booth's banner was subtitled "Two Phils" Tour.  I've blogged / Facebooked about Phil Yeh before, who has re-started the magazine 'Uncle Jam'.

Phil Ortiz was kind enough to sign a recent comic book work from Bongo Comics for my son and I.

I couldn't pass up getting the issue, because as seen above, it's Homer Simpson driving the 'Fatmobile / Batmobile' on the front cover of the comic book!

Long time readers of this Blog know that I have an essay in a book on the 1960's Batman TV Show, that will be shipping soon for sale, Gotham City 14 Miles.

(Which reminds me, the book, Gotham City 14 Miles, is having its '1st Book Signing' at Monarch Cards & Comics, 4400 Heatherdowns Blvd., on December 18th from 1 to 4 p.m. in Toledo, Ohio. If YOU are near that area, check it out!)

Just a few notes on the inside pages of the comic book show above.

The pencils by Phil Ortiz fully illustrated the point that the writer of the script, Chuck Dixon, intended to portray.  'Pardon My Clunker' was well written and fully illustrated.  Thanks for the signed copy, Phil!

I've already posted Phil's Biz Card above, which you can left click on and see in a larger view.

Phil's comics credit are listed here: at the Grand Comics Database.

Phil's Wikipedia Entry can be seen here: Phil Ortiz.

Until I read those two links, I wasn't aware of all that Phil has done for the past 30 years!  You should check those links out further!

Too often, credits are not hi-lighted in animation, so it was good to see the listings. I'm glad that comic books have progressed over the decades to provide more credits.

This is my 'Spotlight On... Phil Ortiz', one of several 'Spotlight On' blogs I've done over the years...

Matter of fact, YOU can check out the 'Spotlight On...' blogs by clicking this link where there are over 840 different links served up by Google!

There aren't THAT many individual posts, but the blogs have been picked up and re-posted by many others, including the persons 'Spotlighted' at this Blog!

Some of those include (but not limited to): Bruce Durham, Scott Shaw!, James Pinard, Elisa Feliz, Amanda Stevens, Tonya Kay, Bryan Reesman, Robert Roach, Christian Meesey a.k.a. Messimo, Erik Andresen, Jeff Balkeand Joe Pepitone a.k.a. JoepeP.

Thanks again to Phil Ortiz for being a great guy to my son and myself at the recent Long Beach Comic Con!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3303:

Each year since 2001, either myself, or Tina and I have 'attended' the special event 'Free Comic Book Day', (FCBD), in San Diego, in one way or the other!

In 2009, Tina and I surveyed almost all of the FCBD events at our Local Comic Book Shops in the San Diego Metro Area, (LCBS), in order to find out how the response was to that day, and to find out how each LCBS participated. Here are the links to those two blogs, Part 1 & Part 2, and you won't believe how many LCBS we visited! So many it took two blog posts!

Last year I blogged and 'Facebooked Mobiled' from a LCBS, SoCal Comics, in the middle of all the action!  Thanks again to Jaime Newbold for inviting me to do so!

So, yes... You could say I am an active participant in the FCBD tradition, which is going to celebrate its 10th Anniversary in 2011!

In honor of that... FCBD has already publicized what the 'Gold Level of Sponsorship' Comics will be!  I've chosen a few to show you here today, and the others can be seen at the FCBD web site itself here!

So, like the folks at FCBD say... "Save The Date", which in this case will be Saturday, May 7th of 2011!

Have Some Fun! I know I will!  Where at... I don't know yet, but I'll be sure to tell YOU... My Blog Readers in advance!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3302:

I'm still reading, (and possibly review blogging), publications that I received at several comic cons this year, including a couple of short comic book boxes full of comics and graphic novels from the recent 2nd Annual Long Beach Comic Con (LBCC)!

In the Artists Alley of the LBCC, I came across Mark Rivers' table, where he showed me one of his comics from his 'Dirty Kitchen Press' imprint, 'Freaks Mutants, and Monsters' #1.

Here is 'My Take' on this indie comic book:

Front Cover:  Kind of a cool comic book cover in an 'underground comix' style.

Inside Front Cover: Table of Contents shows 4 separate stories.  The copyright info, which I always read...portrays an 'attitude', which may or may not be reader friendly for those that read it. There is a good placement for Mark's web site at the bottom right of the page.

1st Story: 'Saga of the Burrito Monkey' - You know... As I read this, I find myself transported back to the late 1950's when 'Atlas Comics' was in its heyday with MoNSTer and HoRRoR Comics! Titles like 'Journey Into Mystery', 'Tales To Astonish', and 'Tales of Suspense' started back then.

This story although updated for the 2000s, reminded me of the presentation format that was used in those above named comic book titles. Being 'Old School'... I kind of liked this, even with the 'Underground Comix' style of art, and 'current day' dialogue that was used.  Actually, I 'Liked' this feature!  Good start for this 'anthology comic'!

2nd Story:  'I Fought Muscadon and lived' - Yet another story that reminded me of the 'Good Old Days' of Atlas Comics, yet updated in artwork and dialogue.  Great moral to the story and a twist ending.  Another 'Winner'!

3rd Story: 'Attack of the Meme Meeps'! - Really good situational sotry plus with a twist ending.  Again using influences from the past, yet updated for the 2000s audience.

4th Story:  'Merry Christmas' - A 2 page only story.  Unfortunately, this one didn't 'flow' with me.  It wasn't like the previous three stories.  Maybe because it was only 2 pages in length? I don't want to call it a 'filler' story to round out the pages needed for the comic book, but the two pages didn't work for me. A weaker story to end the issue in my opinion.

However, as I've said before, reviewing an 'anthology comic' is a very hard thing to do.  Writing and illustrating all the stories in an anthology has to be the same, in that it is a very hard thing to do.  Usually most regular sized anthology comics have three stories... Where I find I really 'loved' one, was 'okay' with the second, and wondered where the heck the third one came from, or why was it even included???!  Here, in this issue I was able to read three really good illustrated and written stories, and was left wondering about just one of them.

Because of that, I'm still going to give this comic book issue a very favorable rating at a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a 10.0 comic book rating scale.  That's because the 1st three stories flowed so well in their presentation!

Where can YOU get a copy of this comic book, if you aren't lucky enough to see Mark Rivers at a comic con like I did?

Well... You could go to his web site, Freaks Mutants, and Monsters where you could download a digital copy, or click a link there to order a hard copy!

BTW, while you are on that site... Check out his blog where he blogs about his creations and other topics.  Just click the 'Home' link on the order page.

(I don't see any Facebook Fan Page for his imprint, so can't direct you there at this time.)

My Thanks to Mark Rivers for bringing this comic book of his to my attention!

My thanks to those of YOU that have read today's blog post! I do appreciate that!

For those of you that didn't know me before today... I first set up as a 'dealer' at the 1972 San Diego West Coast Comic Con (SDCC) at the El Cortez Hotel. So I've been around comic conventions for a little while, LOL

My wife Tina and I now have an on-line exhibitor (dealer) table at the first "virtual" comic con titled the "Facebook Comic Con" (FBCC)!

You can view our dealer table and interact with us there on Facebook by clicking this link, which takes you to our table named: 'Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing'.

Plus I have a chapter in a new book coming out in December of 2010, that is pictured above, "Gotham City 14 Miles"!  Click here to become a 'Fan' of the GC14M Facebook Fan Page!.

Also, if you are a Facebook member and would like to also join my Facebook Network, I would have liked to have sent you a Friend Request.  However,  I have reached the maximum of 5,000 Facebook Friends and Fan pages 'limit' already, so I have now added on a personal Facebook Fan Page of my own!
Just click this link to be taken to 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics' where you can click the 'Like' button there! And Thanks!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3301:

I have mentioned before that my 'free reading time' is somewhat limited, due to on-site projects for clients, home-office web projects at all hours, and also social networking via my laptop and now my Droid!

So when I get a book, heavy with 'copy', like the one pictured above, it takes me a little time to read it all, and then possibly blog about it, if I find it blog worthy...

I met the main author of this 'pulp mag' format book during the recent 2010 Long Beach Comic Con, (LBCC), at the Silver Comics booth.

That author would be Michelle Bryson, who is pictured in the top left photo, and then with her publisher, Johnny Ortiz in the lower top photo at the left.

I've blogged about Johnny's Silver Comics line several times before, as seen in this link, but this is his first pulp mag style publication to see print.

I know that comic books have their 'roots' in the pulps, and I have read some during the years, but it is comic books that have been my main emphasis in collecting.  That's because even in the 1960's comics were a lot easier to obtain than pulps when I was younger.

However, this 'pulp' was based on 'The End', a character that I had already read a couple of adventures of his in the 'Silver Comics' series of comics, so I thought I would give it a try.

I normally don't blog about non-comics publications in this Blog, as it is titled: 'ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com', but the cross-genre nature of this publication merited at least a mention at my New Facebook Fan Page if I didn't blog about it.

I found that reading it was a pleasure.  Michelle 'paints' the pictures in my mind about what is going on in the story, even though it isn't an illustrated graphic novel.  Good job there, Michelle!

Plus, a famous comic book artist, Frank Brunner, has several illustrations of his interspersed in the text pages.  I haven't seen his work for a while, but it brought back memories to me of his works on other titles I've enjoyed in the past, i.e. Dr. Strange in Marvel Premiere, Howard the Duck, and Red Sonja to name a few. The illustrations are printed in black and white, to fit the 'pulp' format style.

In addition to the main story, there are three more stories. One by Dennis Rau, and then two by Dan Beltran, both with illustrations by Dan Beltran.  Those were also good, and made this a total package worth reading!

This is a well rounded publication, and more than worthy of blog mention! The format is in 6" x 9" softcover book format, and the front and back cover illustration definitely grabs the browser's attention when first seen.

However, for YOU to purchase this book, you'll have to order it directly from Johnny's publishing company.  The cover price is astounding for what is presented... only $6.99 + shipping!

That is, if YOU don't see him at a comic con near you.  I'm not for sure of his con schedule... So I suggest you check out the web site for Silver Comics, plus become a 'member' of the Silver Comics Facebook Group Page, which I have already done!

As to my 'comic book grade' for this 'pulp mag', I'm going to rate it a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 as it chock full of stories and illustrations, and worth the purchase if you are into pulp mag style of publications for reading!

My thanks to Michelle Bryson for bringing this publication to my attention at the Long Beach  Comic Con!  AND to Johnny Ortiz for publishing another quality publication!
