TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3493:

Yesterday I was 'invited' by LCBS owner Randy Myers, to attend the 'Read A Comic In Public Day' event at Collectors Corner in Baltimore, Maryland, via the Facebook event page for that event.  (As seen here!)

I had to decline as I am on the West Coast, and wondered if there were any of these 'Read A Comic In Public Day' events closer to me in the San Diego Metro Area...

I found that there actually was one, at this Facebook event page, '2nd Annual Read Comics In Public Day - San Diego' sponsored by Chriss Cornish.  It is being held on Sunday, August 28th from 11:00am - 3:00pm at the Starbucks on the corner of Balboa and Genesse (4227 Genesee Ave) in San Diego.

Here is more info taken from the Facebook event page that Chriss posted:

NOTE: Different location from last year!

August 28 is international Read Comics in Public Day (RCPD). The first was held last year.

Some of us San Diego sequential art lovers gathered at the Starbucks by Mysterious Galaxy, in the Clairemont neighborhood. This year we'll instead by at the Starbucks at corner of Balboa and Genesse.

We'll be meeting up outside at the tables so that those with budgets that don't stretch to venti lattes can still participate without feeling self conscious.

___WHAT IS RCPD?___
Read Comics in Public Day was founded in 2010 by Brian Heater and The Daily Crosshatch. It began as a joke; something about Heater reading novels on the train because it’s too embarrassing to read comics. His fellow Daily Crosshatch editor Sarah Morean had the idea to take the joke to nobler heights. And thus we have Read Comics in Public Day.

LINKS
www.readcomicsinpublic.com

THE DATE
RCPD is scheduled for August 28 because it is the birthday of comics great and Marvel universe co-founder Jack Kirby.

THE GOAL
Be seen reading comics in public.

Step 1: get some comic books, graphic novels, or other works of sequential art

Step 2: go somewhere public

Step 3: read the comics

Step 4: have someone take photos and upload them to your Flikr account after joining the RCPD group

Repeat steps 3 and 4 as desired

____THE PLAN, STAN____
On Sunday, August 28, we will congregate at the Starbucks at the corner of Balboa and Genessee (San Diego, CA)

We'll start at 11:00am and go to around 3:00pm, or whenever.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
* Comics and/or graphic novels. Please bring some to share if possible - it's a great opportunity to introduce fellow comic lovers to new titles. And not everyone has the budget to have something new to read.

- What about digital comics?
The goal of RCPD is to be SEEN reading comics, in public, by strangers. If the public can not tell you are reading a comic than we don't really achieve that goal.

THAT SAID, if you have some way to make it very obvious you are reading a comic on your digital device (short of announcing, "oh, I am enjoying this digital comic" every two minutes) than it's all good. Otherwise, let's stick to the always obvious traditional printed format.

There are also other locations internationally that are being shown with Facebook event pages, including:

Bakersfield, California

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Frankfurt, Germany

Berlin, Germany

There are other events that don't seem to have Facebook event pages, but are being held, including:

Portland, Oregon - Perth, Australia -  Roanoke, Virgina - Overland Park, KS - and others...

You can see more of those and other news of this event at the main web site here: International Read Comics In Public Day

Additionally, here is the origin of 'Read Comics In Public Day' from the web site by Brian Heater & Sarah Morean:

About

Like so many great things in this world, Read Comics in Public Day has its roots in a joke. I don’t remember the exact wording, but it was something off-handed about reading novels on the train, because I was too embarrassed to read comics in public. Like many good jokes, that one had its root in the truth.

I run a comics blog, I travel to comic conventions, and many of my good friends are involved in some form or another in the comics industry, but I still find it hard sometimes to get around the stigma. Take that time, two years ago, when I was having my taxes done. The accountant asked if I had made any charitable donations in the prior year–I’m pretty sure she snickered when I attempted to explain to her what the CBLDF is. “That’s all right,” she said, “We don’t have to fill in the name.”

Comics are now widely accepted as a legitimate and vibrant art form–so why do I still feel a bit embarrassed to let strangers know about my not-so-secret passion?

My fellow Daily Cross Hatch editor Sarah Morean suggested that we turn the joke into something a bit nobler–and perhaps more permanent. And thus, the first annual Read Comics in Public Day was born.

The concept is fairly simple: we’re asking that everyone take an hour or two out of their day on August 28th (also the birthday of Jack “King” Kirby, incidentally) to read a comic book in a public setting–a park bench, a beach, a bus, the front steps of your local library (we do ask, however, that you be mindful of local loitering laws). Let strangers see you reading a piece of sequential art.

Take to the streets. Be proud. If someone asks what you’re reading, say, “a comic book” (the phrase “graphic novel” is also acceptable, but let’s face it, it sort of defeats the whole purpose). Heck, lend them a book, if you’ve got an extra–what better way to make a new friend and convert a new reader?

While you’re at it, why not get a friend to snap a picture of you reading? Send it along and we’ll post it up for you in our photo gallery and on our site.

It’s all pretty straight forward, of course, but if you’ve got any questions–or suggestions–feel free to drop us a line at
readcomicsinpublic@gmail.com.

Thanks and happy reading.

- Brian Heater

The main Facebook event page for this 'Read Comics In Public' Day is the one created by Brian & Sarah at:  'Read Comics In Public', where you can find even more events and news.

Thanks to Randy Myers of Collectors Corner for bringing this year's event to my attention, so that I could blog about it before Sunday arrives!

Tina, Vinnie & I are planning on attending the event in San Diego.  Considering that we will be at the 2nd Annual So Cal Comic Con in Oceanside, CA the day before all day, selling comics from our table there... We'll need a place just to sit and read comics on Sunday to relax after being on our feet all day at the Con!

See you there...???!!!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3492:

Last Friday night we missed the Fund Raiser for the 2011 Leo Carrillo Film Festival in Carlsbad, California, as we were attending the final concert of the 2011 TGIF Jazz In The Park Series, also in Carlsbad.

This Friday night, August 26th is the first of the free films being shown for this season, which we are planning on attending.

Here is the link to the two page flyer with instructions on how to get there, and then on the second page is the listing of all the films to be shown this season.

You'll notice that the 2011 Season is only five (5) Friday nights this year... But there are several good films to be shown, with an episode of 'The Cisco Kid' TV series shown prior to the main feature.

Plus, you can bring your own dinner & drinks, or buy from the food shack on the premises, which is what we are going to do the first night of the Film Festival.

I have blogged about Leo Carrillo and / or the Leo Carrillo Film Festival many times through the years.  Here is the link to all of those blogs or re-posts.

For those of you that are new to this Blog of mine, (ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com), you may be wondering what this topic has to do with comics... Well, here's the link to where you can see all of the covers to The Cisco Kid  comic books that Leo starred in.  Several have photo covers! Would you believe that there are forty (40) of them to collect?!

Plus several of the films that are shown during the Film Festivals have comic books that were published, but you'll have the fun of searching those out for yourself, at the same web site!

Hope that you can make it to one of those nights during this five night 2011 Leo Carrillo Film Festival!  If not... I'm sure that I will be posting photos from each night that we attend in a special photo album at my Facebook Fan Page.  Night #1's photos will be shown in this album.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3491:

Jerome 'Jerry' Leiber passed away yesterday...

I heard this at 1:48 PM on the Sirius Satellite Radio station's Elvis Presley Radio channel as I was driving on an errand, which I found ironic, as Jerry Leiber with his partner, Mike Stoller, had co-written many of my favorite songs that Elvis had recorded...

Jerry was born April 25th of 1933, so he was 78 years old.

Jerry started writing music together with Mike in Los Angeles in 1950, so he was pretty darn young at the time.  Mike was the composer, and Jerry the lyricist. You can find at lot more details about the duo at this Wikipedia link.

For you younger readers, who didn't grow up with the duo's songs being sung by the likes of The Coasters, The Drifters, Jay and the Americans, The Exciters, and Peggy Lee, Jerry & Mike were serious song makers for many years, before going into the production side. Their last major hit was for Stealer's Wheel in 1972, with 'Stuck In The Middle With You'.

However, it was the songs that they wrote and were recorded by Elvis Presley, or ones they wrote specifically for Elvis Presley's films, that were my favorites. Basically because I was a long time Elvis Presley fan & collector. (See this blog #3319 for that info.)

The UK LP shown at the top right of this blog has what the producers thought were the best of Leiber & Stoller songs to present on that collection.  I would have to agree on that as the LP contains:

1. Hound Dog
2. Love Me
3. Loving You
4. Hot Dog
5. I Want To Be Free
6. Jailhouse Rock
7. Treat Me Nice
8. Baby I Don't Care
9. Santa Claus Is Back In Town
10. Don't
11. Trouble
12. King Creole
13. Steadfast, Loyal & True
14. Dirty Dirty Feeling
15. Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello
16. Girls Girls Girls
17. Bossa Nova Baby
18. Little Egypt
19. Fools Fall In Love
20. Saved

So yeah, I would have to agree with those selections.

As for Leiber and Stoller's works... They do continue on in pop culture. One of the more recent episodes of the TV show 'American Idol' had a 'Leiber and Stoller' Night on May 11th of 2011.

It's taken several years for the duo to receive their 'due'.  Awards started being presented to them back in 1969, but the big ones were only presented afterwards, such as:

1985 – Induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame
1987 – Induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
1988 – Elvis Presley's recording of “Hound Dog” placed in the Grammy Hall of Fame
 1991 – ASCAP Founders' Award
1994 – A star placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of 7083 Hollywood Blvd.
1996 – National Academy of Songwriters Lifetime Achievement Award

But as Paul Shaffer said..."Leiber and Stoller?  There would be no 'Rock and Roll' without them!".

Note: There haven't been any comic books that were based on this duo's songs that I am aware of.  However there have been several Elvis Presely comics and a couple of graphic novels printed.  Should there have been any printed on Leiber and Stoller songs I'll do an addendum to this blog.

I never met either of this duo in 'real life', but enjoyed many of their songs in 'reel life' on the screen in Elvis movies.  My thanks to both of them for years of enjoyment.

...And my condolences to Jerry's family and friends.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3490:

This 'report' is on the August 2011 Semantink's Comic Savvy meetup that was held last night at the Milano Coffee Co. in the Mission Valley area of San Diego, California!

Here is the link to the Facebook Comic Savvy 'event page' for this meetup.  Even more attended than had clicked the 'attending' link, which was great! There is no charge to attend... And you have an opportunity to order food and drink from Milano's menu as well!

Chris Henderson moderated the meetup last night, which was a little hard to do, as several persons showed up later.  There were some other activities going on in So Cal affecting the attendance, and we actually had one person drive down after attending the Los Angeles Comic Book & Sci-Fi Convention that also ran on Sunday.  So there were good reasons for the late arriving crowd last night!

Chris started several good conversations, and the above video from my new YouTube Channel, at 'Hamersky On Comics' was just one of them.  This one that I filmed was on the recent movie, 'Cowboys & Aliens'.

Talking about comic book movies... My question last night to all who were present at the time, (20 of the 25 who attended), was also on 'comic book movies'.  There were actually five (5) that had been released since the July 2011 meetup.  I considered the "comic book" movies to be ones that had been based on comic books, OR have had comic books (one shots or series) based on the films. You'll notice that there was mixed reactions to the films:

Capt. America Cowboys & Aliens Smurfs Rise Of Planet of Apes Conan the Barbarian
Liked 14 2 0 7 0
So-So 0 5 2 0 0
Disliked 0 0 1 0 0
Did Not See 6 13 17 13 20
Total 20 20 20 20 20

After the tallying, I then got up and mentioned that I was passing out post card sized prints of a new illustration by one of my newest clients, 'Barbara Marker Artist, whose new Facebook Fan Page I had built and promoted just before the San Diego Comic Con International took place.  You can find the print at this link, and I encourage you to 'LIKE' that Facebook Fan Page while you are there!

On the back of one of the prints was a yellow dot, which indicated that person won the free prize I was giving away last night... The review copy of the new 'Conquest of the Planet of the Apes' hard cover book from Archaia Entertainment that Tina LoSasso had recently review blogged in blog #3485.  There was a lot of oohs & aahs on this prize, as the new 'Apes' film is out in theaters, and as you cans see by the chart above, the 7 who had seen it, had all liked it!  So 'Apes' is 'Hot' right now with those attending!

There were additional topics brought up, and several persons had their own projects to discuss.  I'll be mentioning those persons later as those projects are closer to completion.

There is a contest happening right now for the cover of the special Zombie Kill Squad.  I'm suggesting you vote for both Rich Kuhaupt, and Daniel Touchet's entries!

One person, Joel Elad, who is the co-promoter of the upcoming So Cal Comic Con that Tina & I will be setting up at NEXT Saturday, also arrived to this meetup for the first time.  He had just driven back from the Los Angeles Comic Book & Sci-Fi Con, where he was passing out flyers for his con.  I introduced him, and he passed out flyers for his upcoming show.  If you are in the Southern California area this upcoming Saturday, August 27th... Check out this link for the So Cal Comic Con event page and then join us!

That's about it for today's blog... I'm no longer posting multiple pics here at the the blog from the meetups that I attend.  Instead, I'm now posting most of those pics taken at special albums at my own Facebook Fan Page.  This month's meetup pics can be found here when uploaded:  August 2011 Semantink's Comic Savvy. If you attended or know of those pictured and are Facebook Friends with them... Feel free to 'tag' yourself or them!  Plus, my thanks to Andrew Rakestraw for taking additional photos for me, so that I could be included in the photo album!

Again, my thanks to the hosts of this monthly meetup, Semantink Publishing, who have several online comic book series that you should be checking out if you enjoy reading online / downloadable comic books!

~Michael D Hamersky - who is asking you for your vote in the current voting going on over at The Shel Dorf Awards web site. I was nominated for 'Comic Blogger of the Year' on Monday, August 8th!   While being honored to be nominated, I'd also like to win! The competition has some other good nominees for the same category I was nominated for, so I'm asking for your help on this!

Voting online ends September 4th... And there are several categories to vote in... I'm only mentioning the 'Comic Blogger of the Year' here, so as not to play 'favorites' with the others nominated in the other categories!

If you have enjoyed this blog or any of the others in the now over 3,489 blogs in this series of mine, I'd appreciate your vote!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3489:

Eat That Frog! by Brian Tracy
Illustrations by Paul Maybury

Smarter Comics turns its business book/comics fusion magic to Brian Tracy's time-management classic Eat That Frog!

This is the perfect book and the ideal presentation for anyone overwhelmed by today's fast-paced world.

If you:

-- can't seem to carve out time to start that big project your boss gave you;
-- have an in-box that's never empty
-- come home from work exhausted only to start your second job of cooking, washing, cleaning and running errands;
-- tackle the small, easy stuff just so you can feel like you got something done;

... then "Eat That Frog!" is for you. No, you won't be required to down any amphibians - cooked or otherwise. But, you will be challenged to stop procrastinating and get on with what you need to do to have the life you desire.

As Tracy explains early on, 'eat that frog' is an analogy for how you want to manage your day. Mark Twain said if you eat a frog first thing in the morning that will probably be the worst thing you do all day. This is the basis of Tracy's teaching, and the reason for some very interesting illustrations of really big, and really ugly, frogs!

Tracy narrates the book which is filled with humorous illustrations of people tackling their challenges, eating really big, ugly frogs, and visualizing their success. I particularly appreciated what Tracy said about creating a 'positive addiction' by completing tasks. That feeling of accomplishment becomes addictive urging us on to attack the tasks before us.

For some, the practices outlined in the book may seem overwhelming - writing to do lists and goals by year, month, week and day! My suggestion is just get started doing one thing, then another, and let the 'positive addiction' take over.

Smarter Comics version of "Eat That Frog!" is like Cliff Notes for the harried. You can easily read the book, and absorb the principles, in an hour. Plus, you'll find a quick-reference summary of rules and principles to keep you on track each day.

I give "Eat That Frog!" a VERY FINE PLUS (VF+) 8.5 on a comic book grading scale of 10.

Here's the Publisher's Info on this book:

Publisher's Info:   Eat that Frog!

Author: Brian Tracy

Procrastinators, be advised: Success is not a magical combination of genetics and fashion sense. Rather, it is a series of time management behaviors which must be practiced on a regular basis. Luckily, “EAT THAT FROG!” will show you how to deal with those challenging tasks you keep putting off in an accessible comic book format. Instead of slowing you down, completing these hard jobs only empowers you to tackle the rest of your day.

“EAT THAT FROG!” is a vivid metaphor for conquering your most difficult tasks first. By ‘eating that frog’ during the first part of the morning, successful people know that the hardest part of the day is behind them. This allows them to plow through the rest of their business with relative cheer, and get more done on a daily basis. Plus, challenging tasks tend to be associated with the greatest personal and professional rewards. Once you learn how to develop habits that will allow you to perform at a consistently high level, the type of work you do becomes far more interesting.

Bestselling author Brian Tracy cuts to the core of what is vital to effective time management: decision, discipline, and determination. While the pace of modern life can sometimes be overwhelming, “EAT THAT FROG!” will teach you 21 time-tested habits that will not only help you get a grip on your life, but boost your productivity. By making to-do lists and then confronting the most heinous task first, successful people make the best use of their energy. Based on the international best-seller, this comic book version pairs illustrated panels with the original text. These illustrations will show you in only a few minutes how to avoid the time-trap pitfalls of technology while making the most of its efficiency.

Remember: While nobody can do absolutely everything, everybody can do a little something. By prioritizing your critical tasks, you can stop procrastinating and start accomplishing today!
