TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3506:

I recently received a copy of 'Monsters Among Us' #1 from Rob Wuest, who is the writer of this hard cover comic book.  I say 'hard cover' comic book, because it is a 'comic book' that is bound as a hardcover book.

This format is used in Europe quite a bit, and I thought at first that the item in the envelope had been sent from the United Kingdom!  It was that nice of a presentation package!

When opening the 'comic book' to the opening credits, I found that my copy was #99 out of 200 copies printed in this format.  I also found that the comic book was dedicated to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

I could immediately see why the book was dedicated to Stan & Jack, because of the splash page!  This splash page was presented as a discolored newsprint splash page from days of old... With an 'Atlas-era' Sci-Fi / MoNSTer page to draw the reader into turning the page to start reading the story... Which I immediately did!

I was captured by the storyline, the puns placed in the dialogue, and the artwork... all at once!

It was like taking a time machine back to the 'glory days' of the period of Stan & Jack & Steve & Don & Larry when the monsters & science fiction comics were among the best that Atlas (pre-Marvel) was publishing!  Back then, (1957), there were only 16 bi-monthly comics.

The printing was the key factor to my believing that I was in a 'time warp'.  Instead of today's 'Masterpieces' style of re-printing old comics with clean, white & brite pages... This book's pages were intentionally aged.  The old school panel layout also added to the fun in reading this!

Trust me on this one... If you are a fan of the earliest 'Marvel' comics, those when the 'Marvel Age of Comics' was just beginning... You'll love this book!  Reading this is like reading the backup stories of Tales of Suspense when Iron Man was just being introduced, or Tales To Astonish, when Antman was first being featured. The 'backup' stories in those issues were great reading, during those titles transistion to superheroes!

In addition, the comic creators include a team of humans who are responsible for introducing the monsters to Earth... and that gives it a feel of the early 'Fantastic Four', minus one member.

Hey, I can't say enough 'good' about this book!

I'm giving it a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade, because I loved the concept AND the execution of it!

You can see select pages of this comic book at the Monsters Among Us Facebook Fan Page.

At the time of this blog post, you can also purchase a copy via the Monsters Among Us web site, both in a hard copy and an e-book format.

As a matter of fact at this time you can purchase an e-book for only 99 cents!  Check it out!   This is worth far more than 99cents in reading pleasure!  But you better hurry to pick up one of the remaining 200 special limited edition hard bound format copies!

My thanks to Rob Wuest for bringing his comic book to my attention!  It really made my day when reading it!  Make Mine Ma... er... Cosmic Comics Group!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3505:

The Sun Tzu's The Art of War - Comic Book Style

From SmarterComics
Adapted by Cullen Bunn and Shane Clester
Illustrated by Shane Clester

2,500 year-old military treatise, "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu, is required reading for U.S. Marines and in most American business schools.

It's known to have been studied by such champions as New England Patriots Super Bowl winning Coach Bill Belichick and World Cup soccer teams.

Gordon Gekko quotes it in Wall Street (1987): "Every battle is won before it is ever fought." Hollywood even made a modern day movie about it. Fun trivia: Wesley Snipes who stars in the movie is seen reading a copy of "The Art of War" in a previous film, Passenger 57.

Now The Art of War, originally written on bamboo strips, comes to us in comic book format, thanks to SmarterComics.

Cullen Bunn and Shane Clester adapt Sun Tzu's philosophy to modern situations. Illustrator clester applies Sun Tzu's tactics to politics, mobsters, poker (All warfare is based on deception.), business, paintball,
and retail commerce to name a few of the scenarios.

My favorite is the depiction of the opening lesson: "He who wishes to fight must first count the cost." The mobsters with their zoot suits and tommy guns set the tone for the rest of the book. Using such iconoclastic images enables the producers to get the point across quickly and easily for all to understand. It's lively and fun, and thoroughly modern.

The book ends with a recap of the main concepts, and then - a test! See how you do. I learned well and got a 100% correct!

The Art of War from SmarterComics rates a 9.0 (out of a possible 10.0) on the comic book grading scale.  A VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM).

~Tina Lo Sasso

Here's the Publisher's Info on this book:

The Art of War (2nd edition)

Author: Sun Tzu

Written by the ancient Chinese military general and philosopher Sun Tzu, THE ART OF WAR reveals the subtle secrets of successful competition – equally applicable to maneuvers in war, business, politics, sports, law, poker, gaming, and life. Required reading in modern business schools!

Learn how to succeed in any conflict with subtle secrets of winning like these:

All warfare is based on deception.

Cowardice leads to capture.

The goal of the skillful general is not to win battles but to prevent them when possible.

Force your enemy to reveal himself, so as to find out his vulnerable spots.

Read this comic version of the ancient classic, and cut to the heart of the message.

2,500 years of strategic wisdom can't be wrong. Do you have what it takes to be a general of Sun Tzu's? Find out in just ten short questions.

The legend goes that Sun Tzu was born into minor nobility and given a good education, after which he wrote a military treatise in order to get noticed and hired by royalty. He then expanded his 13-chapter THE ART OF WAR into 82 chapters and trained the army. Eventually he broke the peace by invading the southern state of Yue. Other conflicts ensued, but although his troops were once outnumbered 30,000 to 200,000 he was always victorious. Many successes followed and continued after his death. Some considered his death to be another of his deceptions.

Vinnie's Take On: Hammerboy!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3504:

(Vinnie)  Hello everyone! Today I am reviewing the Anime DVD, "Hammerboy". It was produced in Korea by Tae Kun An. It's a great tale and is actually family friendly.

The suggested rating is 13 and up, but that is just because of one minor swear word.  There is hardly any violence, and no blood or gore. I honestly would recommend it to anyone as long as they (or their child) are over the age of 5. It will most likely fly right over their heads as the guy says it and the scene changed. I don't really find it a big deal, as it's just a minor one that was focused on for a couple seconds, but it's the parents choice on whether or not they want their child to see it.

My dad and I bought this movie, as well as a couple others, up at the Oceanside Collector's Con awhile ago to resell. My dad just couldn't take it upon himself to resell it because of the name, as he had grown up being called "Hammerman". He decided to keep it and to at some point watch, which ended up being just recently. We had nothing else we wanted to watch, it was too late to go to Redbox, and it was my choice of movie for the night, so I decided to pick it. I mainly wanted to see it because it sounded silly, and quite childish, so I had decided I wanted to view that for a change.

The DVD was about a remote village trying to be rebuilt after a worldwide disaster struck. A young boy, Mangchi, armed with his trusty hammer, and the
undiscovered power of the Echo, tries to save a princess that was shot down with her plane by a military group that has taken over her kingdom. He vows to help her restore her kingdom to it's rightful state and escape her captors. They travel a long way, have some difficulties and trouble with some people, but they eventually find the leader of this group, and fight him to win back her kingdom.

All this time Mangchi has been training his Power of the Echo, in order to have
a chance to fight the leader, as he also shares this power. They fight and fight, and eventually the evil forces lose, like always, and the kingdom has been restored.

I honestly enjoyed this movie. It was a great tale, and was very action filled and adventurous. The art was actually fairly good. The characters looked good, and maintained the same looks, and everything was proportioned. The special effects used looked pretty good, and it added a nice feel to the movie.

The story was very nice and one that I've not seen before. I liked that an enemy became an ally in the end, as it showed that he had some remorse still in his soul. I also enjoyed the fact that evil lost and the kingdom was restored, because justice should win almost all of the time. I also liked the fact that it was an older girl who was in trouble, and the young boy was the hero. I have rarely seen that the hero in a movie or book was a young child, which definitely changed it up a bit for me. The fact that he had such great power compared to the evil leader just amazed me as he had a lot less time to master the Power of the Echo. Some people may find it as a flaw in the story, I just found it to be that when the power is used for good, it's much stronger than when used for evil. I do not know if that's the message that the creator is trying to pass on, but it's the message that I got from it.

Overall, I really enjoyed it despite being a little childish for me, but I honestly did. I give the Anime movie "Hammerboy" a VERY FINE PLUS (VF+), an 8.5 out of a 10.0 grade scale. It's a very good movie, and I recommend you get it. I'd personally look for it online as I have not seen it anywhere besides the one video guy at the con, who appeared to have several copies of closeouts for sale.

~Vinnie!

(Michael)  Thanks, Vinnie for the review blog today on this 2007 DVD that we watched together!

When checking out web pages for this blog to link to link to I found the following:

Hammer Boy (Hammerboy) on Facebook

Which was a reprint from Wikipedia.  On that page I found that there was an additional description of what was in the original film, although neither Vinnie, Tina, nor I found on the DVD version:

"...the movie has scenes where the Hammerboy's penis appears. Some people believe that makes the Korean anime have some "spectre" of Shotacon".

So that is probably why the film was for PG-13 on some web pages for sale. Again, we didn't see this on the American version shown at the top right of this blog post. Just the one word that we looked at each other when it was uttered, as nowhere else in the film had that language been used!

So, other than those two possible items, the film was one that all three of us enjoyed watching.  And to think that it was based on a Korean graphic novel (manhwa)!

And yes I did pick this DVD up because of the 'Hammerboy' title.  My 'nickname' ever since high school has been 'Hammerman' or 'The Hammerman', so my initial interest was due to the name!

~ Michael

Note: Vinnie makes it to as many conventions with me as he can. He collects the 'Amazing Spider-Man' comic book series, but is open to read other titles from publishers that print titles that are age appropriate for him.  He also has been attending 'behind the scenes' events, such as the one he blogged about ht here: Vinnie's Special 'Look at The Captain Rochester Party for the Artists' at the recent 2010 Comic-Con International: San Diego! He really had fun meeting and having dinner with Sergio Aragones, Bob Burden, Scott Shaw! and others there at this exclusive after hours Comic-Con Party in San Diego!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3503

When the most recent package from Smarter Comics came in with graphic novels for possible review... I decided to grab it first, as it's been Tina who has been reading these first and wanting to review blog them, (as seen here).

Which has been okay with me, as she has been promoting business authors for some time now, with their book launches.  So it was only natural for her to want to see those same business books that she has either read or promoted transformed into sequentially illustrated books.

However, this sequentially illustrated book, (aka graphic novel format), is one that I had to read.  That's because I've read the original book in text format, and a hard time reading  & digesting it.

Possibly because it is such an 'old' book.  Written by Napoleon Hill back in 1937, this is a true 'classic'.  Yet it is written in such a style that it takes a while to 'digest' it properly to be able to utilize the information that is presented in each chapter.

For those of you that don't know what the book is about... Here is what the publisher says of this 2nd Edition:

Want to learn the principles of getting rich in less than an hour? Take the illustrated advice of Napoleon Hill, whose observations make up the heart of the best-selling classic “Think and Grow Rich.” Now updated into an engaging comic book format, you can quickly glean Hill’s wisdom from these beautifully illustrated panels.

Since its publication, the book has sold over 30 million copies. Widely regarded as the greatest wealth building guide of all time, “Think and Grow Rich” isn’t just a great read; it’s chock full of money-making secrets laid out in simple steps. Inspired by a suggestion from Andrew Carnegie on how to not only achieve your dream but get rich while doing it, the book is a testament to ingenuity, foresight, discipline, and above all, the accumulation of wealth without the sacrifice of passion.

Learn why your thoughts are worth millions of dollars, and why faith removes limitations. Learn how to overcome procrastination and embrace the moment. Understand that temporary defeat is not failure and winners never quit. Above all, you can enjoy learning the underlying philosophies of wealth building while perusing a comic book. Start thinking and growing rich today!

So what's 'My Take' on this 2nd Edition?

I found this to be so much easier to read AND 'digest'.  Truly written for those that want to take the time to read, comprehend, and implement what is presented in each chapter as each chapter is presented.

'Think & Grow Rich' was one of the first books I read during my introduction to motivational speakers back in the day.  I found it to be a little 'dated' at the time, especially when the author writes about his experiences with Andrew Carneige who died back in 1919.  It was just a pretty 'dry' book, and reminded me of reading a textbook for college.

This 2nd Edition by Smarter Comics isn't 'dry' at all. Which is why I'm giving it a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale. If you have to read this book for a class or a study group, I would suggest also reading this sequentially illustrated book to help you comprehend what is being presented visually. I'd suggest the same if you are reading the book for your own personal motivational purposes!

NOTE:  The publisher has multiple ways you can purchase this book! Here is the link to where you can purchase it direct from them at SmarterComics!  Either ebook via iPhone, Android, online, iPad, android tablet, or hard copy!

I also want to mention that SmarterComics also has a Facebook Fan Page, that I suggest readers of this blog 'LIKE'.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3502:

As mentioned on my Facebook Fan Page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics', it's taken a little while for our home office to recover from the Thursday September 8th Blackout that occured in San Diego County & other parts of Southern California, (plus parts of Arizona & New Mexico!).

So I've been mainly offline the last few days, with no blog posts.  However, today I've finally got the wi-fi system back up and running, and did not want to miss mentioning this day of rememberance in the comics.

No, not the 'comic books', but the 'comic strips'.

I mentioned this then upcoming observance back last Sunday at my Facebook Fan Page.   It is the 'Cartoonists Remember 9 11' day in the Sunday newpapers, and also online, as I don't believe any newspaper will be carrying all of the comic strips that are participating in this observance.

I personally chose to feature the 'Beetle Bailey' strip here today, because that is the one that... 'got' me the most.

You can see the rest of the 93 comic strips in total at the special web site, 'Cartoonists Remember 9 11' here.  You can also view it as a slideshow.

There are several standouts in the strips that are participating in this observance, from comics I've known for years, plus others I had never heard of before...

My thanks to those comics creators taking the time to observe this day, today...

It may seem a little 'odd' to observe this day in the 'comics' or the 'funnies', because it isn't that kind of casual observance, but after you read the strips, you'll see that this was a good idea for remembering what happened ten years ago today...
