TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3511: Sorry for the lateness in this 'Weekend Edition' of my Blog... I had it ready to be posted, when the laptop blipped out on me, and because I didn't have a current backup when writing it... I had to re-write it...! Last night I rented the Season 1 DVD of 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' TV show that ran for the 1964-65 TV Season. I did this to introduce it to my youngest son, Vinnie, who other than interfiling the comic books of this TV series in inventory backstock to sell; had not viewed any episodes of this TV Series. We watched the first three episodes to get an idea of the show, and episode #23 'The Brain-Killer Affair', because it had Yvonne Craig in it, whom I've met recently at a comic con! Anyways... The TV show ran for four seasons... And its background history can be found at this Wikipedia entry for the show. The show was originally aired from September 22, 1964 to January 15th of 1968. The list of episodes can be found at this link. Season one from 1964-65 is shown at this link as to what the competition aired against it was. I was my son's age at this time, and in a one TV set household. So instead of this show, my folks had on either 'The Red Skelton Show' that also ran for an hour on CBS, or 'McHales Navy' / 'The Tycoon' on ABC. Season two from 1965-66 was where NBC moved it to a different night, to Fridays. Which is kind of like what is done today, moving shows to Friday that have a 'cult' type status, but low viewership. The airtime was 10PM which was better for me, because it wasn't a 'school night', and only 'The Jimmy Dean Show' was on ABC, and 'Slattery's People' on CBS. Season three from 1966-67 was terrible in that the show was moved up earlier for air time. We watched 'The Green Hornet' & 'Time Tunnel' on ABC, which overan UNCLEs time slot! Re-run time during the summer would be 'The Wild Wild West' & 'Hogan's Heroes' on CBS. Season four from 1967-68 got no better! The show was moved to Monday nights. Your household would have to be watching 'The Monkees' on NBC to continue on with the UNCLE show that was next. Otherwise your household wouldn't turn the channels half-way through 'Gunsmoke' on CBS or 'Cowboy In Africa' on ABC. This is probably why this was the last season for the UNCLE Show. I'm not going to get into talking about 'The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.' TV Show or the Gold Key Comic Books. That would be a topic for another time. I am going to mention a high school buddy of mine, David Heilmann, who was really into this 'secret agent' stuff at the time. It was due to him that I seeked out the TV Show and espisodes that I missed a little later. He had a great collection of items from this time period, but I've lost touch with him since my first getting married and moving to the LA Metro Area. Speaking of comic books... Here's a link to the Gold Key series of 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' comic books that ran from May of 1965 through April of 1969. They are hard to find in high grade today... I usually don't have any of these comics in stock, at my online comic book shop, ComicBooksCircus.com, but you can always check for sure. I've never see the 1966 Man From UNCLE Annual from World Distributors in the UK, but here is a link when someone uploads it. The Man From UNCLE 1987 comic book series from Entertainment Publishing had eleven issues. I sometimes have copies of these. The 1993 2 issue mini-series from Millennium Publications is easier to find. Also when available is listed in my online comic book shop. As far as I can tell, those are the only four comic book series or one-shots on the TV Show. Here's Vinnie's thoughts on the TV Show, after viewing only four episodes...
It came out around the time when James Bond was first getting popular in the United States, as they both featured secret agents. We watched the first three episodes, and I learned the basic storyline of the show. I haven't seen any of these episodes or read the comics before, so I essentially had no knowledge of it whatsoever. We started watching it, and I realized it was in black and white. It didn't surprise me considering the release date of the show. The stories each episode told were interesting, and I do believe that these were a lot better than today's entertainment on TV, however I don't watch much anyways. The acting was also relatively good. They all played their roles well, and acted how I figured their characters personalities would be. I really enjoyed the show as it was something different for me. Of course, with the show being 47 years old, many other people may have watched these before me. As a matter of fact, my dad started watching this show at the same age that I am today!
