Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

The Commander X All-Star Special #1!

 From The Nemo Publishing Group

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3730 -   I received this comic book in the mail recently.  It's titled: 'Commander X All-Star Special #1'!

What's this issue about?

"Comic Summary: Return to the golden age of high adventure with Commander X in three tales featuring giant monsters, robots, mystery and action! The Red Octopus and the Axis powers want super weapons from Atlantis. Can Commander X stop them? Commander X is part of the ongoing Capt'n Eli graphic novel series.

40 Page full color comic book featuring three Commander X adventure stories written and illustrated by Jay Piscopo: The Guardian of Tantarus, Allies, and Wake of the War-Beast."

Here's 'My Take' on the comic book:

Front Cover: This title's main character, Commander X, was familiar to me, because I have other comics from the Nemo Publishing Group that included him.  It is a striking front cover, which made me want to open the comic book to the...

Inside Front Cover:  A nice intro page... Showing that there will be three stories in this Special Issue.  With credits, and other important info.

Splash Page:  A nice retro looking pin-up page for the story titled: 'The Guardian of Tantarus'.

Interior Pages - 1st Story:  This  story takes place in Tibet in 1939. As I am also a fan of Indiana Jones, this story was right up my alley!  Commander X is sent into Tibet's snowy climate to stop the Red Octopus, who is working with the Nazis.  Their mission?  To trap the abominable snowman!  In this story, the Commander encounters Nazis, Tibetan monks and of course, the abominable snowman!

2nd Story:  This second story is called 'Allies' and recounts the first time that Commander X met the Sea Ghost, who was actually going by the name 'Sea Raider' during World War II.  The first splash page of the story has some great looking equipment, and all too soon the story is over!

But wait... There's a 3rd Story!   Titled: 'Wake of the War-Beast', starring Circe, Sorceress of the Sea!  It kind of reminded me of the old time 'Atlas Comics' stories, with the monsters, before the superheroes came in!

The final two pages are pin-ups, with the Inside Back Cover a 'house ad' for Nemo Toys.

The Back Cover is also a 'house ad', with a pinup of Commander X and Captain Midnight, being published in December 2012 from Moonstone and Nemo Publishing.

All in all... A pretty darn good read, IMO!

The story & art in the three stories are by the creator of Commander X, Jay Piscopo.

My comic book grade for this special issue is a Near Mint, (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!.

You can 'Like' the Facebook Fan Page for 'The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli', which the Commander X belongs to that 'Universe'.

Also, you can order this book and others from Nemo Publishing at this link

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents Another Look At:

The Alan Weiss Comics Reprints / Thorpe and Porter Double Double Comics Series!

As Published in the United Kingdom

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3729 -   The past few days I've been seeing two older blog posts, from August & September of 2007 being viewed quite a bit in the stats of this Blog.

From the August 25th blog post

Alan Class United Kingdom Reprints -

Earlier This Week We Had An UK eBayer... buy two of our Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion from DC Comics.

He and his brother would read the Alan Class UK reprints of these stories over in the United Kingdom when they were younger and he was now looking for the original stories source!  Always interested in learning more about comic book history I wanted to know more of what he was talking about!

So I checked out my favorite search engine and came up with the following information:

I had already known that some companies like Marvel Comics had had their own imprint in the UK decades ago, plus there were predecessors in the UK itself that had the reprint rights before the major companies started printing their own UK editions.

Since this UK buyer was interested in just the Alan Class UK source stories, this blog post will center only on those reprint series.

It would appear that from the early 1960's up until the early 1990's, a British publisher called Alan Class published what is considered to number in the thousands of black and white reprint comics!

These reprint comics featured material from Atlas Comics (pre-Marvel), Marvel Comics, ACG Comics, Charlton Comics, Archie Comics.  There appeared to be some other American publishers works reprinted, but not for certain which ones.

For those fans of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko there is a relatively high proportion of reprinted work by these two master artists!

Although the reprints were reproduced on low quality paper, the pulbications provided a great opportunity to obtain stories that were usually difficult and expensive to buy as originals, and often had not been reprinted elsewhere.

These Alan Class reprints are becoming more uncommon to obtain, and although in the past they have not been seen as expensive, they are now attracting more collector interest with the resulting spiral upward trend of pricing.

We at Make It So Marketing usually have several of the original publications the Alan Class reprints reproduced for sale in our eBay Featured Store. However they are not categorized (separated) as Alan Class source materials. You would have to just search our listings. To do so just click on the top right comic book cover to view all of our store listings to see if we have it in stock for you.

Then from the September 1st blog post:

Make It A Double Double!

No, I'm Not Ordering A Burger!!

(Update On Alan Class UK Reprints AND New 'Double Double' Comics!)

This is compiled from two e-mails received from an UK eBayer that introduced the Alan Class series of reprints to our blog. The previous post is linked here.  Here are his recent e-mails to us.

(First e-mail presented here:)

Hi,
I read your blog and it was nice to see the Alan Class genre highlighted by yourselves. It brings to the forum a whole wide rangeing aspect to comics and their history.

Alan Class is a logistical minefield and tracking down which original issues featured in the reprints is an even harder task. As a quick note I tracked down several copies which featured the covers of original marvel greats such as Fantastic Four #1 and Tales of Suspense #39.

I even came across a bunch of UK bound comics, which I had initially thought were reprints similar to Alan Class. (A new can of worms opening up here). These are Called 'Adventure Double Double Comics'. Originally priced at 10p so Im guessing early seventies here (as their is no publisher info or any info to be precise).

Looks to me like a whole bunch of Silver Age US origin comics were bought up, covers removed and put into these sort of DC Annual editions. I am pretty sure that these are NOT reprints.

One of the examples has complete comics of: Adventure Comics 368, Worlds Finest 175, Wonder Woman 163 and Aquaman 28. I'll let you know of any more info I dig up.

(The second e-mail follows:)

Looked into the Double Double Comics a bit more. Thorpe & Porter (A UK distributor) who repackaged a lot of old US Golden age comics, were later bought out by DC, to act as their sole distributor to the UK. Any of the unsold DC comics were then removed from their covers and repackaged into these 'bumper' value comics.

The interesting thing about this is, as Ive just found out, each one was unique (say Batman Double Double Comics Number 3) having a random selection of comics put into a glue bound cover. One copy could have say, Batman 172,189,191 and possibly a Detective Comics in there for good measure, whilst the same issue could have four different Batman related comics!!

I've rummaged around and found that the occasional Marvel, or other publishing house comic could find its way in there by accident!! Along with this I've noted several different versions of this (I could write a book about this area of comic collecting), Justice League Double Double, Action Comics Double Double, Batman Double Double, Adventure Double Double, Superman Double Double & Jimmy Olsen Double Double so far.

I'm suspecting that titles such as Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Superboy, Aquaman, Brave & Bold etc would be found in some of these issues. These in my opinion are rather scarce, given the fact that British Collectors would shy away from such comics.

As Ive mentioned with Alan Class getting a little revival, I've a feeling these too will gain added interest. Primarily due to the fact that these are not reprints. They are unique in the fact that DC sanctioned what could effectively be seen as more than an 80 page Giant (some I believe have these in them!!). It's opened new avenues as a collector and puts me I suppose in a frame of 'Historian'. Imagine, these books could contain gems which are out of reach for a lot of collectors. Original cover or not, the original story pages are there!

What a wonderful thing comics are!!!

Regards,
Des

(Desmond Jukes / United Kingdom / fortunefaded72@hotmail.com)

Des is definitely right in that comics are a wonderful thing! There are the beginnings of a Alan Class publications revival at eBay.com (USA), as can be seen in that there are currently 10 auction listings listed!

I tried to see if Desmond is on Facebook, he's not...

I then looked to see if there were any books coming out that are reprinting the above mentioned series... Didn't see any.

I'm not for certain why these two five year old blogs are seeing so many views lately, but something's up...

As for the background on the Alan Class Comics, here's just a bit: "Alan Class Comics was a British comics publishing company between 1959 and 1989, owned by Alan Class (born in London, England July 21, 1937). The company produced anthology titles, reprinting comics stories from many U.S. publishers of the 1940s to 1960s in a black and white digest format for a U.K. audience".

For more info on the Alan Class Comics... Check out this link at Wikipedia.  A lot of good info there!

Here's the link to the Grand Comics Database that lists most (all?) of the Alan Class Comics published.

As for Thorpe and Porter, here's a brief history:  "In the 1950s and 1960s American comics typically arrived in the UK as ballast on ships. In 1959, Thorpe & Porter (widely known as 'T & P') became the sole UK distributor of Marvel comics. These were printed on Marvel's American printing presses, along with a special cover giving the British price instead of the price in cents, and shipped across the Atlantic. Inside the front cover, with the indicia, a sentence mentioned Thorpe & Porter as sole distributor in the UK market. Thus it was that brand new American-printed copies of Fantastic Four #1, Amazing Fantasy #15, The Amazing Spider-Man #1, and countless others, appeared in the UK."

Plus for more on Double Double Comics, here's a link to the Blimey blog, that shows a few pics of how they looked.

Here's a link to more sample copies of Thorpe and Porter Double Double Comics.

Here's the link to the Grand Comics Database that lists all 24 issues that were printed in the Double Double Comics titles, from 1967 - 1973.

If you have any additional knowledge of the above topics, feel free to post a reply at my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics

My Take On: N.E.W.S. Publishing Corporation - Peep Show - Charlton Comics

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents A Mini-History On:
'Peep Show'
As Published by N.E.W.S. Publishing Corporation - Owned by Charlton (Comics) Publishing!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3728 -   In blog #3709 titled: "My Take On: Humorama - A Division Of Martin Goodman's Publishing Empire", and blog #3727 titled:  "Addendum To My Take On:  Humorama - A Division of Martin Goodman's Publishing Empire" I went into the background history of that division.  For those of you that haven't read those two blogs yet... Martin Goodman was the founder of Timely / Atlas / Marvel Comics.

While I was looking for more info on Humorama, I came across 'Peep Show' that was affiliated with Charlton Comics.  Charlton Comics?  Yes, Charlton Comics!

Here's just one of the tidbits of info that I came across:

"The publishing of the song magazines was the biggest part of our business," Burt Levey, who served as Charlton Publishing Business Manager and Treasurer in the '50s to mid-'60s, said. Part of Levey's job was to secure permissions from the various song publishers. "50% of the company was devoted to the song magazines, 25% comics, and 25% for the rest of the magazines—confessions, detective, Real West, and the crossword puzzle books. Of course, this varied but it's an accurate ballpark figure of the business breakdown for Charlton."

Here is the link to a list of magazines that Charlton Publishing printed: List Compiled by Ramon Schenk.

'Peep Show' appears to be the only mag in this genre that Charlton Publishing printed, although the list of magazines published may be incomplete.

As far as I could tell... Peep Show started circa 1950 and lasted until at least 1957.  I couldn't find when it ceased publishing.

I had known years ago that Charlton was also into the songs magazines, which I sometimes picked up in collections that I bought that also included their comics, (see this list for Charlton's comics titles).  Charlton had published 382 different comic book titles with 6,482 different issues.

However, I had not known that Charlton Publishing had been in the genre of publishing that 'Peep Show' would be included in.

Charlton Comics published from 1946 - 1985.  Here is the Wikipedia entry for the company.

As for the 'Peep Show' cover pics used in this blog post... There just aren't that many of them on the web!   What few I did find will be uploaded to this special Photo Album:  N.E.W.S. Publishing Corporation - Peep Show - Charlton Comics.  The photos used in the magazines were taken by Gary Wagner, Roy Kemp, Jack Stager, Roland Carre, Charles Kell, and others.

The front covers were in color, but the interior pages were supposed to be black & white only.  I haven't seen an actual copy of the magazine, so this has not been verified by me.

This magazine, as well as all the others and the comic books, were printed at the Charlton plant in Derby, Connecticut.

To the left is a small photo of the facility.  The owners of the companies were John Santangelo and Edward Levy.  What these two men did, that was unique in the publishing industry, was to establish an "all-in-one" operation.  Which was to have everything under one roof:  editorial, printing, distribution, thus eliminating any middle-man expenses and maximizing their profit.

The Charlton Building shown above, housed the three sister companies: Charlton Press, Charlton Publications, and Capitol Distribution.  There was also an off-site auxiliary company, The Colonial Paper Company.

The two men had started publishing the song lyric magazines in 1935.  The comics started in 1945.  The biggest disaster to hit the building was in 1955 when Hurricane Diane hit the area, leaving the whole 129 acres facility under 18 feet of water!

The whole operation started running down in the 1980s... The cost to replace the printing presses was too much for the companies to bear, and operations started being sold off.  The first 35 years of the company it thrived... The last 15 years operations went downhill.  This operation at its peak had 80 publications with 250 employees.  At the very end, in 1991 it had just two magazines and 8 people there.

Since this blog is about the 'Peep Show' publication, and that it was run by Charlton Publishing, I'm going to end this post here.  Should I come across any other 'Peep Show' or other magazines that Charlton Publishing printed... I'll do an addendum blog.

I'm wondering if any of the other comics publishers also had magazines like this one, and the ones I've blogged about that Martin Goodman, owner of Timely / Atlas / Marvel Comics had?  I'll be sure to blog about them when I find out...

~ Michael

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3727 -   In blog #3709 titled: "My Take On: Humorama - A Division Of Martin Goodman's Publishing Empire", I went into the background history of that division.

(For those of you that didn't read that earlier blog post... Martin Goodman was the publisher of Timely Comics that evolved into Atlas Comics and then into Marvel Comics!)

Since that blog was published, I've been sent some sample covers of other magazines, that I will be adding to the special photo album titled: "Humora - A Division of Martin Goodman's Publishing Empire", at my Facebook Fan Page.

In the header above are a few of the front covers that will be added to the special photo album.

Unfortunately I haven't been emailed or messaged with any other additional background history on the Humorama Magazines division.

Should you have information that you would like to share with me, and readers of this blog, feel free to message me at my Facebook fan page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics'.

I will be gathering that information and adding it to a future blog post.

My thanks to those of you that have sent in links, and those of you that will be sending in information / other links.

Before the showing of Trek Nation, there was a 15 minute short film from Roddenberry Entertainment.   Which if seen in a dome sized theater would be pretty cool!

The Trek Nation's promotional info stated the following:

"Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, also known as "The Great Bird of the Galaxy" passed away in 1991. His son Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, Jr. was only 17 years old. Trek Nation, is a feature-length film documenting Rod's trek across America to understand who his father was through the touchstones Gene left behind: His Friends, His Family, His Work, and His Influence. Including surprising, revelatory conversations with actors, fans, NASA personnel, entertainment-industry leaders and other prominent figures, Trek Nation is a film that explores one of life's most universal stories — the discovery of a parent."

I was a little surprised to see Rod's features change during the film.  It appeared that the film took several years to produce, as his appearance changed through the early minutes of the film.

There was a lot of interviews with those that worked with Gene during the Star Trek years, and I learned even more about the Star Trek Universe during the showing of this film.

Yes, the film was centered on Rod's trek across America, so there was quite a bit of Rod in the film.  But it was entertaining as well as educational to view Rod's journey!

Some of those interviewed are world wide famous, while others would probably only be known to Star Trek fans.   It was a good mix of interviews, along with clips of Star Trek conventions, as well as clips of Gene throughout the years.

The film didn't shy away from controversial subjects, which I thought was a good way for Rod to know his father better...

This film was pretty darn good!   I'd give it a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

If you weren't lucky enough to view at the San Diego Film Festival... You can purchase a copy on DVD at Roddenberry.com's Shop.

In addition, there is a Facebook Fan Page for Roddenberry.com, which currently has the Trek Nation film banner on its header.

Last, but certainly not least... There is a Facebook Fan Page for the San Diego Film Festival, which I invite you to check out and 'Like'.   The Festival runs through today, September 20th of 2012, with the last of the 100 films that the Festival is screening!
