John Buscema!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3759 -   I'm noticing that several of my archived blogs with John Buscema's name in them are seeing some activity the past 18 hours.

That's because John' Birthday would have been today... As he was born December 11th of 1927 in Brooklyn, New York.

So John, had he lived on, would have been 85 years old today...

Sad to say, John passed away on January 10th of 2002...

The above top right photo is from the 1960's Marvel 'Bullpen' Days, which is where I first got to 'know' John via his work.

John had earlier attended the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan.

After John started working professionally, he was influenced by the art of the famous illustrators of the '40's and '50's, such as Al Dorne, Norman Rockwell and Robert Fawcett

John had a great relationship with Stan Lee during the years. Indeed, John's last published work was for DC Comics on 'Just Imagine Stan Lee with John Buscema Creating Superman'.

John was actually a long time artist with Marvel Comics, first starting there in 1948, when it was known as 'Timely'. He stayed on staff there for about a year and half. He later came back in the mid 1960's when Stan Lee needed more artists for comic book expansion. He retired from active comics drawing in 1996.

A little over ten years ago, I met John for the first time at the 2001 SDCC, (San Diego Comic Con Int'l). It would be the first and only time John made it to that gathering of fans of the comic arts where he spoke.

John spoke gruffly at his spotlight program and made fun of his superhero work at Marvel.  That included the Fantastic Four, Nova, Sub-Mariner, the Incredible Hulk, and of course the Mighty Thor.

Indeed, he said while the cameras were running that were filming the program, that his work on Conan the Barbarian  was among his favorite works.  However in the early years of Conan, Marvel could not afford his page rate for that comic. It was only after Barry Smith, who worked for less when first starting out, brought Conan's circulation numbers up that Marvel could afford to have John do the artwork!

John tried to come across as a gruff old guy during this spotlight program and other panels he attended that week, but all the audience could see that he was like a big teddy bear. The comic book industry lost a great man when he stopped drawing...

Giant Monsters A-Go-Go Issue One!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3758 -   Back to comic book reviews!

Here's another comic book that I found at the recent 2012 Long Beach Comic Con in Long Beach, California.

The title is 'Giant Monsters A-Go-Go' Issue One.

I'm always interested in this genre, especially if the front cover is a cool one, which this one is!

The inside front cover is about the creators, Rafael C Gonzalez, and Mark Rivers.

The splash page is the first page of the first story title:  'The Life and Death of Talos The Bronze'.  With Rafael Gonzalez doing the story and art, and Philip Clark doing the script and letters.

The Splash page shows an art style that I immediately like, and turning the page I start enjoying the story line.

Twelve pages in... The story ends...

There is a pin-up page, and then an early design sketches page for Talos.

Following that, there is a ten page story on the second character shown on the front cover, the one-eyed being.

There isn't a splash page, or title, or credits to this story... Why?  I don't know.

The story is an interesting one, and when reading it, I figured that this was Mark Rivers contribution to the issue.  Mark is shown at the top right of this blog post, holding the comic book.

I have previously review blogged one of Mark's own comics, Freaks, Mutants, and Monsters #1.

Then there is the inside back cover page, an in house print ad for Ka-Blam printing.

Then the back cover page, samples of art shown at Rafael's and Mark's Deviant pages.

So... Here's my comic book grade for this comic...

A Very Fine Plus (VF+) 8.5 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

You can contact Rafael at his Deviant page to find out where you can purchase this comic book, as I don't see it on IndyPlanet or elsewhere.

My thanks to Mark Rivers for bringing this comic book to my attention at the recent LBCC!

~ Michael

TODAY'S BLOG IS #3756 Comic Books are an American pop culture creation. At times they have been used for promotional purposes to sell cars, or burgers, or to introduce a company itself to the general public.

Other times they have been printed to get a point across to the reading public, such as during the 'Cold War' when comics warning about the 'Red Menance' were seen.

Well, back in the 1941 era, many comic book covers had a call for patriotism because of what happened on this date back in 1941.

So comic books also went to war!

There are hundreds of comic books from that era that were published.  In previous years in this blog, I've chosen several to present on this date.

For this year, I've chosen to present seven standout issues from the Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos title from Marvel Comics from the early 1960s!

I'm not old enough to remember that day.  My dad wasn't old enough to serve yet either.  However, 'war comics' were an early part of my growing up reading and then collecting comics. Possibly because I was a 'Navy Brat', and war comics were at the Navy Bases in relatively larger numbers in the barbershops and Navy Exchanges.

Not to glorify war, but the comic book covers shown at the top portion of this blog post helped to make this war known in the 1960s to younger children when the comics were first published.

I just wanted to remember this day, now 71 years ago...

The sacrifices that our servicemen and servicewomen gave during that time period are the reasons why we are able to have the freedom that we still have today.

My thoughts go out to those that lost family or friends during that 'Day of Infamy', and in the days and years that followed until World War II ended... I may have not been there during that time period, but I still 'Remember Pearl Harbor' each year in this blog...

Dead Dinosaurio!

By Javier Hernandez!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3755 -   Here's another comic book magazine that I want to review blog before the 2012 year is over!

I saw Javier Hernandez at the recent Long Beach Comic & Horror Con in Long Beach, California.

I hadn't seen him for a while, and he brought to my attention his new 'Dead Dinosaurio', that is shown at the left in the photo above, and in larger scale at the top right of this blog.

The front cover really caught my eyes, and it is actually a gatefold cover, which continues onto the back cover.  Very cool!

The inside front cover is an table of contents page, with a dedication.  Good start for this comic book magazine.

The splash page was presented in black & white...

Pages 2 & 3 were a full 2 page spread... beautiful!

The continuing pages showed a good story with good art... I enjoyed reading it.

Just before the end of the pages, there was a special article titled:  'The Pre-History of Dead Dinosaurio'. Which presented the layout pages of this comic book, as well as the history of the characters used.

The final four pages were guest artist cave drawings of the characters, which included pages from Mikey Cossin, Jordan Gibson, and Adolfo Torino Nunez.  Pretty good!

The inside back cover was a color pin-up by Javier.

The back cover was the continuation of the front cover spread.

You know... I really liked this comic book magazine!  It's bigger than a comic book, so just a little harder to store in a bag and board, but this was darn good!

I would give this magazine a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!

You can purchase this magazine at Javier's online store at Javzilla!

Thanks to Javier for bringing this comic book magazine to my attention...

~ Michael
