TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3793 - I received a copy of the newly published graphic novel titled: Yi Soon Shin - Warrior And Defender, from the publisher, Onrie Kompan pictured above, this past week. I have already review blogged issues #1, 2, 3 and 4 of the 4 part limited comic book series that this graphic novel originated from. The story is as follows: "This is a limted series based on the true story of Admiral Yi Soon Shin, a Korean naval commander who saved his people from Japanese invasion forces during the Imjin War (1592-1598). Much like the Nazis during World War II, the Japense were known for having little remorse for the innocent civilians of Korea. They raped women, enslaved children and killed elders. All that stood agains them was one man who could not be defeated in battle." As you can tell from the links shown above, I first started reading this limited series back in March of 2010, so it has been a while to get to this published format of being a graphic novel. However, this hardcover book is truly an awesome book! The front cover is illustrated properly, leaving room for the text, the title, the credits and... wait... a Foreword by Stan (the Man!) Lee. Okay... I opened it up and started reading. The inside front cover and the first page were a double page spread of the main character against what appeared to be a zillion foes! Not bad! The splash page added a little more to what was coming... The acknowledgements page showed the credits as well. Then the Foreword by Stan Lee... Yes, it was only was one page, but with a photo of Stan with Onrie Kompan, with the comic book issues that comprise this graphic novel. Of course Stan included a reference or two to some of his work, (Spider-Man and Captain America), but he did acknowledge what he thought of the work by Onrie and crew. What was nice is that the next page was a page of maps, Battle Locations, and then a 'Character Guide' for the Korean cast and the Japanese cast. Which was good to have to start this volume. Plus, there was a note at the bottom of the page stating that full character bios appear at the end of the book as well. Turning the page, the story starts. With issue #1, then 2, 3 and finally 4. I've already review blogged the comic book issues, as seen in the links above, so I'm not going to go into a rehash of the storyline here. I do want to point out though... that Onrie has in mind that this is the first book of a three book storyline, so that probably means a total of twelve comic book issues, (?). If they are all as good as these first four issues, then we have some good reading ahead of us! Oh, and just so it isn't just a reprint of the comic books... There is a special chapter titled 'Onward To Victory!' - The Diary of Admiral Onrie. The fourteen pages goes into depth on the background of constructing the first four issues, with several items I was not aware of. Then there are four pages of interviews with the rest of the creators of this limited series, which was good reading as well. Plus thirteen pages of character profiles, a cover gallery of the first four issues, and a full page blurb about the legend continuing in 'Yi Soo Shin: Fallen Avenger'. With the final page being about the Creators. Whew! All this in one book, and for only $25.00 cover price for the hardback! I've got to admit... that having started seeing this comic book start in March of 2010, that it is really nice to see it in hardback graphic novel format. Really nice! I've got to give this book a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale. Plus it is one that I can recommend as a purchase for you, or to give to a friend that likes graphic novels that are not superhero based stories. This truly is a modern masterpiece of work, and one to be shared. You can find the Facebook Fan Page for this series at: Yi Soon Shin. You can purchase the book at Amazon, Yi Soon Shin: Warrior and Defender OGN Trust me on this one... This is a SUPERB reading experience! ~ Michael
