Presents His Take On...

The Jack Kirby Collector #61

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3918 -     Yesterday, I blogged about the American  Comic Book Chronicles: The 1960s 1960 - 1964, as seen in blog #3917. Which was my review blog on the free book I won at the 20th Anniversary Panel for the TwoMorrows Publishing company at the recent 2013 San Diego Comic-Con International.

In the same blog I mentioned that I had stopped in at the TwoMorrows Publishing booth on Wednesday's Preview Night.  Why?  Well... Ever since the Jack Kirby Collector magazine had gone to the oversized (Treasury size) edition, I had stopped subscribing.  The USPS had messed up a few of the oversized magazines, and I elected to pick up my JKCs at the San Diego Comic Con International instead.

So instead of getting my JKC fix every so often, it would be just once a year at the TwoMorrows booth at the SDCCI!

Anyways, the photo at the top right of this blog post is a photo of me picking up the Jack Kirby Collector #61 from the Editor / Publisher, John Morrow, on Preview Night.  Thanks for the photo opportunity, John!

So what's the magazine issue #61 about?  Here's the scoop from the TwoMorrows web site:

Summer 2013 - 100-page FULL-COLOR magazine
NOW IN FULL-COLOR! JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR #61’s theme is JACK KIRBY: WRITER! Whether creating stories while drawing, or pecking away at a typewriter, Kirby gave his work a unique voice which fans either love or hate. Don’t miss this examination of the quirks of Kirby’s conceptualizing and wordsmithing, from the operatic FOURTH WORLD to melodramatic ROMANCE work, and beyond! There’s a feature-length Kirby interview, MARK EVANIER and our other regular columnists, NORRIS BURROUGHS on Kirby's design and composition on the NEW GODS, a comparison of STEVE GERBER’s Destroyer Duck scripts to Jack’s pencils, Kirby’s best promotional blurbs and sound effects, an unpublished STUNTMAN story (in color!), galleries of pencil art including NEW GODS, DESTROYER DUCK, 2001, and more, plus an unseen Kirby cover painting! Edited by John Morrow.

Okay... So what's 'My Take' on this issue?

Well... The choice of the scan on the cover page of the magazine was an interesting one... I don't see how it fit into the issue's theme of 'Jack Kirby: Writer', though... So I went ahead and turned to the inside cover page.

Which was an in-house ad featuring 'TwoMorrows Publishing Update', which was interesting to read what was coming out from TwoMorrows other magazines.

The first page was the Contents Page for issue #61.  With the theme, 'Jack Kirby: Writer' at the top left.  Then listing the articles that were presented in this issue.  At the right was a 1979 illustration of 'She-Demon', a 1979 project that Jack had put together.

The second page in was an article by John Morrow titled 'The "!!" Effect'.  So right away the magazine went into presenting its features for the issue.  I'm only going to mention the articles that appealed to me...

Which included:

WHACHUTALKINBOUTKIRBY? feature - 'That Is Strong Talk... Whoever You Are by Mike Breen.  Which was a Quick Quiz -where 'Can you identify the sources of all of these typical Kirby quotes?'.  I found the answer to be part of a very interesting article.   The source was from my favorite series that Jack did over the years.

INCIDENTAL ICONOGRAPHY feature - Greek God... To Hippie! by Sean Kleefeld. Which is part of an ongoing anlysis of Kirby's visual shorthand, and how he inadvertenly used it to develop his characters.

OVERVUE feature - Poetry In Motion.  Jack Kirby and the Death of JFK, by Kevin Ainsworth.  A very detailed account by this author of Fantastic Four issues #25 & #26.  Something I had not known about my favorite Jack Kirby series!  Worth the price of this issue alone!

GALLERY 2 feature - The Truth.  A story by Jack that was to have been featured in a DC magazine titled: 'True Life Divorce.  The pencils / partial inks on this seven page story are something to see!  I enjoyed reading this, something I had never seen before by Jack!

UNEARTHED feature - Jack Kirby & Outland by John Workman. A six page story that although a bit hard to read, presented a nice tale.  Worth reading!

KIRBY AS A GENRE feature - by Adam McGovern.  A follow up on the Argo film, the Best Picture Award Winner at the Oscars for 2012.  Presenting two scans that I had not seen before.

RETROSPECTIVE feature - Where Kirby Stopped by Glen Gold.  This article is on where Kirby left the Marvel train, per the author's thoughts.  The Fantastic Four issues #74 through #77.  Interesting reading, and something that I just may agree with...

There are other articles in this issue as well, but the above individually named articles are my favorites of this issue.   As you can tell... There were quite a few of them in this 100 page issue!

So as for the comic book grade I'm giving this issue... Well, it is a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Overall the issue was very readable, and enjoyable.  The Jack Kirby Collector is a magazine that I look forward to for each issue that is printed.   My last review blog on this magazine series was issue #60 which I picked up at WonderCon in Anaheim in April of this year.  As seen at blog #3838.

Now that the magazine has been downsized from the tabloid size it was printed in for several years... I'm sure that the USPS will take good care of delivering this issue to your mailbox.  You can purchase a copy of this issue at the TwoMorrows web site.

My thanks to John Morrow, Editor & Publisher of this magazine, for another fine issue in this Jack Kirby Collector series!

~ Michael

American Comic Book Chronicles: The 1960s 1960-1964

TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3917 -     This book was picked up at the TwoMorrows Publishing Booth at the recent 2013 San Diego Comic-Con International.

How?  Well... I attended the 20th Anniversary Celebration Panel at the SDCCI, and on the way out of the panel, was given a business card.   On the back of the card I was given it said, 'Free Book at the TwoMorrows Booth'.  So I made sure to stop in again at the booth later that same day and checked out the rest of the items John Morrow had brought to the Comic-Con.

I had already purchased the Jack Kirby Collector Sixty-One on Preview Night... So that wasn't my first choice for the 'Free Book'.

So I looked through all of the goodies that John had brought and it came down to this book and one other...  This book won out for me, and I handed over the business card for the book.

I'm glad I did!   This was a very good book for me to read!

The book itself is just one volume of several in the 'American Comic Book Chronicles' series published by TwoMorrows Publishing.  I have not read the other volumes published or to be published.

This hardback book is printed with a white background cover, along with a vertical strip at the far right. A really nice presentation!

Opening the hardback, you see the inside cover page and the first page, in a silver color.  Another nice presentation with a DC promo page, and an Amazing Fantasy Fan Page.  Nice touch!

Thumbing in a couple of pages, you come across the Dedication Page, along with the Credits to this book.  The Writer is John Wells. The Editor is Keith Dallas.  The Cover Design is by Jon B. Cooke.  Nice page!

The next page is the Table of Contents Page...

Page 4 is the Introductory Note about the Chronological Structure of American Comic Book Chronicles. You should read that to get an idea about where the book series is going.

Page 5 is a Note on Comic Book Sales and Circulation Data.  Interesting figures...

Page 6 is the Introduction and Acknowledgments page.

Chapter One: 1960 starts on page 8 and ends on page 39.  I lived this period in American Comic Books.  Of course, being a kid, with a limited allowance... I didn't buy all of these comic books when they were first published.  So it was very much fun to read the background history of each comic book publishing company along with the issues that were being published in the year of 1960.

Chapter Two is on 1961, with Chapter Three on 1962 and then so on until Chapter Five being through 1964.

Page 213 is the end of the stories... With Pages 214 - 219 being the Works Cited by Chapter.

Page 220 starts the Index to this volume, ending on page 222. Pages 223 - 224 are in-house ads by TwoMorrows with 223 showing the 1980s volume to this series, and 224 being photos of other books from TwoMorrows.

All in all, a pretty darn good book to read!

Even though I lived through this period in American Comic Books history, this Chronicle put it all together for me!  So for those of you that lived through part of these years, 1960-1964, or were born later and want to know more about this period of American Comic Books... I highly recommend this book!

There is a timeline for each year, along with world history combined with comic book history.  This book doesn't just state historical facts, but intertwines why and when different comic book features were started and in what comic book titles.  Knowing a little more about the history of the comic book publishers is also interesting reading.

I for one really enjoyed this book and give it a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale! I look forward to the second volume of the 1960s when it is published later this year.

You can purchase this book direct from TwoMorrows via this link. Do it and immerse yourself into some fun comic book history reading!

Oh, and for the other volumes in this series... Here's who writing them:

1965-69 also by John Wells

1970s by Jim Beard

1940-44 by Roy Thomas

1945-49 by Roy Thomas

1950s by Bill Schelly

1980s by Keith Dallas

TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3916 -     The Wolverine: A Woman's Point of View

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single (or married) woman in possession of a sound mind must love Hugh Jackman.

So Ladies, I completely understand your interest in "The Wolverine" which opened this weekend to rather solid reviews and good box office.

What you really want to know is:

How hot is Hugh Jackman in this Wolverine movie?

And, is it better than that awful "Origins" movie you got tricked into seeing a few years ago?

In a nutshell: plenty, and plenty.

"The Wolverine" delivers with plenty of shirtless Jackman, noticeably older, but he's still got the goods. Luckily this time around, he's also got plenty of action and a much more interesting, if confusing, story.

Bear with the beginning. "The Wolverine" toys with us at first. Not only must we endure the annoying Jean Grey (has he learned nothing?), but many valuable minutes of screen time are squandered on the Caveman version of Wolvervine who hasn't had a good night's sleep, or a bath or a shave in weeks, possibly months. The oiliness alone is enough to test a girl's devotion.

Logan's been dancing with bears in the Canadian Rockies trying to get over what happened with Jean. Tormented by dreams of Jean and nightmares of the bombing of Nagasaki, Logan is spotted by a zany, red-headed Japanese girl during an altercation with some nasty hunters in a local bar. Red-headed girl steps into the fight with her trusty sword and helps Wolverine dispatch the hunters. As the pair speed away in her car, you'll wonder how can she keep the windows up with Caveman Wolverine sitting beside her? Clearly she's never seen that Seinfeld episode. The smell doesn't not come out. Fortunately, in this case, the ride is a rental.

Red-headed girl Yukio (the very best thing in the movie next to Hugh Jackman), explains that her employer, Master of Industry, Yashida whom Wolverine saved from certain death at Nagasaki, is dying and wants to see him again before he passes. Yashida offers to give Logan what he wants most -- an ending to his eternal living and enduring the death of everyone he's ever loved -- in return for Yashida's own salvation.

At this point, the ladies in the audience finally get what we want: Logan gets a makeover at the hands of two stern-faced Japanese matrons who have the enviable job of bathing a beefed-up Hugh Jackman. The scene makes for some classic snarling Wolverine humor and is destined to be replayed and replayed by women everywhere once it's released on DVD.

Cleaned up Logan is a bit metrosexual as far as Wolverines go; less hairy and sans cigar and wisecracks, he is still plenty hot.

Logan becomes embroiled in a struggle involving Yashida's son, granddaughter, the Yakuza, a mutant doctor, and a slew of ninjas. Whose side is anyone on? Who can tell? It's confusing but fun with beautiful settings, lovely music and crazy fights amid shoji screens, a temple, the streets of Tokyo, and atop a bullet train.

My advice, don't worry too much about the story. (If you understand the ending, email me.) Keep your eye on Jackman and zany red-headed girl, she's the second best thing in a Wolverine movie since, well okay there's never been a second best thing in a Wolverine movie. But, she's fun and makes up for how weak her 'sister' is throughout most of the film.

Be sure to stay through the credits, there's more Jackman in a scene from the upcoming "X-Men: Days of Future Past".

Enjoy!

My rating: Very Fine  (VF) 8.0, (just like Jackman...)

~Tina LoSasso

Our Take On...

The Wolverine
(A 2013 Film)

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3915 -     We are back home after viewing the film titled 'The Woverine'... A 2013 film.

First of all, this review blog is just my youngest son's 'Take' & my own 'Take' on the film.  Tina's review blog will be posted later.

Here's Vinnie's Take on the film:

I took in the film with my dad and step-mother.  I know my dad enjoyed seeing it, and was actually quite surprised at that.  As for myself, I liked the film being in Japan.  There was quite a lot of scenery in that country in this film.

I thought it was strange that people seemed to keep changing their sides in the film.

I'm hard time expressing today what I thought about the film... I'll leave thathat for my Dad to discuss.

The rating I would give this film is a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

I would recommend this film to a fan of the Wolverine.  For those that like action films, I would suggest seeing this film also.

----------------------------------------------------

Michael:   Okay... So now here's my 'Take' on the film:

I've got to admit... I wasn't thinking this film would be that much fun.

Okay, I was wrong!

The film's storyline was superb!  The settings in North America and then in Japan made for an interesting backdrop for the scenes that were shown!

Here's a link to the Wikipedia entry for the film.  Please be advised that there are major spoilers all over the place though, at that entry!

I was fascinated with this 'Japanese Love Story', which is what it mostly appeared to me to be...

Yet there was plenty of action in this film as well!

The changing of 'sides' by the players in the film kept me interested in the plotline, and there was actually a lot of character development in this 2 hour 6 minute film.

Here's my thoughts on the actors:

Hugh Jackman as Logan / Wolverine: A superb acting role for Hugh!  He looked tough, acted tough, yet was well versed in making this also a 'love story'!

Tao Okamoto as Mariko Yashida, Yashida's granddaughter. - Very well played role.  I enjoyed seeing her and hearing her throughout her many scenes in the film.

Haruhiko Yamanouchi as Ichirō Yashida, the head of a Japanese technology empire. - Another well played role, exept for the ending, where the scene was just a little 'cartoonish'.  Not his fault, but the writer's / director's responsibility.

Hiroyuki Sanada as Shingen Yashida: Mariko's father - I found this role to be somewhat predictable.

Rila Fukushima as Yukio: one of the deadliest assassins in Shingen’s clan - I liked this actress, and found her scenes to be refreshing as well as being able to move the film along.

Will Yun Lee as Kenuichio Harada: a bodyguard of the Yashida family and a former lover of Mariko -  This role was kind of strangely portrayed... Yet I did like the actor playing the role, just that the role was kind of 'chopped' in parts.

Svetlana Khodchenkova as Viper: a mutant, who has an immunity to toxins - Kind of a strange villain... I'm not for sure what to think about her in this film.  But she did play a key role in the film as it progressed.

Famke Janssen as Jean Grey: a mutant and former member of the X-Men, who Logan killed at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand - Famke played a vital part in this film, in her many short scenes.  Well done!

There were others in the film, but I want to post this blog ASAP.

I give this film a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale grade.  I for one really enjoyed this film starring 'The Wolverine'.  So much more than the earlier solo Wolverine film.  If you are a fan of Wolverine... You should check it out at a Big Screen near You!

~Michael

The July 26th TGIF Jazz In The Parks Concert

With the Louie Cruz Beltran Band!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3914 -     Last night, Tina, Vinnie & I joined a couple of our neighbors and took in the July 26th TGIF Jazz In The Parks Concert in Carlsbad, California.

Featured was the Louie Cruz Beltran Band, as mentioned in my blog #3893, where I listed out the schedule of who was playing at the nine concerts this 2013 Season.

We had seen this Louie Cruz Beltran Band before... And were pleased to hear similar sounds and music again this year.

The wine and food we brought to this outdoor concert was very good, and Vinnie really enjoyed the stuffed mushrooms that Vikki provided!

The music was a Brazilian / Afro-Cuban style, with a mix of Salsa thrown in.

I'll be uploading a couple of videos to my YouTube Channel in the future, as seen at this link.

As for why I blog about these concerts... Well... I also sell comic books with music as the theme, as seen at this aisle in my online comic book shop, ComicBooksCircus.com.

We will be attending next week's concert, which will be featuring The Bayou Brothers.  See you there?!

Note:  Additional photos from this concert can be found at this Special Photo Album at my Facebook Fan Page.
