Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

The 2013 Dinner & A Movie Night

At the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park In Carlsbad, California!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3931 -     Yesterday morning, I blogged that Tina and I would be attending the 2013 Dinner & A Movie Night at the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park in Carlsbad, California, where we live.

Here it is Saturday morning, and I've got to get ready for the Latino Comics Expo in Long Beach... But it doesn't start until 11 AM.  So I've got time to post this blog & upload the photos from the event last night first!

Well... Tina & I arrived at the Leo Carrillo Ranch at 6PM, and I stood in line to pick up our welcome package, while Tina found us a place to sit at the tables area.

There were at least 150 attendees at this gathering, and all were there earlier than the regular Film Festival Nights crowds!

Tina found us a good spot, and I elected not to bring in our chairs to sit up close on the lawn afterwards.

There was a musician there playing tunes that I recognized, and the music added to the atmosphere.

At 6:30 PM the lines to the buffett food opened and I was among the first to be in line, as I was taking photos of the event, which will be uploaded to the special photo album at my Facebook Fan Page.

There was also a Silent Auction running, which in addition to the charge of the Dinner & a Movie Night event, were funds to pay for the 2013 Leo Carrillo Film Festivial Season.  Tina and I placed a bid on one of the items, but were outbid...

The food was catered and was great!  Both a meat eaters meal and a vegetarian table.   Tina and I both enjoyed the meal, plus tea, lemonade & coffee.

The Silent Auction ran for quite a while, and ended shortly after the episode of the Cisco Kid was aired.

The short program of speakers was nice, and then the winners of the Silent Auctions were announced.

Then the evening's film was aired, a 60 minute WWII era film, titled 'Moonlight and Cactus'.  The 1944 film starred the Andrew Sisters and Leo Carrillo!

Tina and I had seen this short film at the Leo Carrillo Film Festival a few seasons back.  I was once again entertained by the girls, and of course Leo.   Leo acted a lot like 'Pancho' on the later Cisco Kid TV Show series IMO.

Sitting outside under the stars added to the atmosphere of the film.  I could imagine Leo out there with his friends watching the film in the 1940s...

Last night was a great night for me.  I'm really glad that Tina and I were able to attend!

I'll be blogging about the rest of the Film Season in the weeks to follow, as the 2013 Season starts next Friday Night, August 23rd.

Tina and I will be missing that one, but are reserved for the following four nights of the Season.  Here is the link to my blog explaining the 2013 Leo Carrillo Film Season. Please be aware that you HAVE to call and reserve the night(s) you want to attend ahead of time!

My Thanks to those who sponsored and put on the Dinner & A Movie Night last night!   It was FUN!

~Michael

The caterers had two lines, one for the pulled pork folks, and one for the vegetarian line!

The event had a few speakers, like Charles Balteria at the right, and some nice music by the guitarist!

A really nice evening was had by all 150+ atttendees to this 2013 Dinner and a Movie Night!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

The 15th Annual Art In The Village

In Downtown Carlsbad, California!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3928 -     Yesterday, after church, Tina, Vinnie and I went to the 15th Annual Art In The Village event in Downtown Carlsbad, California.

I didn't think we would be coming across any comic book art at this event, but I wanted to expose my youngest son to other art than just comic books.

We found a parking space, and immediately ran into a booth that had what appeared to be a style of comic book art!  To the top right is a photo of Vinnie with Greg Visintainer, owner of Viz Art Ink Gallery.

The event was laid out in the shape of a cross, and near the middle was a Welsh Baker Cakes booth.  Of course I had to stop for a sample!  Tina and I purchased a cake package for later consumption.

We finished walking the event, had a good time, and then discussed where to eat.  The hostess at The Australian Grill invited us to check out their menu, and Vinnie wanted to try their Kangaroo patty burger.  So we did!  Very good food!

While we were eating there, Tina and I discussed the Organic Art that Larisa Thaney had shown us in her booth.

After eating, Tina and I went back to that booth, and Tina became the proud owner of the piece that captured her when first looking in the booth.  (As shown to the right!)

It was a really nice day & fun at the 15th Annual Art In The Village event for us!  More photos at this special photo album!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3927 -     I mentioned this little comic book 'get-together' on my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics, but haven't yet blogged about this upcoming event.  So I'm doing it today!

The reason why, is that the event date in San Diego was changed.  Here, let me re-post what is on the Facebook Event Page for this event:

Yes, sequential art fans, it's time once again for the annual Read Comics in Public Day celebration in San Diego! *Kermit arm wave*

WHEN:
For 2013, our San Diego celebration will be on August 24, a Saturday. (NOTE: date changed to 24, was originally August 31)

Each year RCPD, an international event, is scheduled for Aug 28, which is Jack "The King" Kirby's birthday. But that's a Wednesday this year. So we're going to hold our San Diego RCPD festivities the Saturday before on August 24. After all, it's scheduled for Kirby's b-day and sometimes you've gotta celebrate a friend's natal date the weekend before or after the actual day.

WHERE:
The tables outside the Starbucks at the corner of Genesse and Balboa (4227 Genesee Avenue) in the Clairemont neighborhood on Saturday, August 24, from 10:am to 3:ish.

I'll have a Read Comics in Public Day sign taped up on one of the umbrella poles, and a pile of comics on a table.

WHAT:
A day of reading and talking about comics in public on a sunny summer day.

There are lots of tables and umbrellas at the Starbucks, but you should still wear sunscreen and a hat. SERIOUSLY, WEAR A HAT. And bring water.

Most importantly, bring comics and/or graphic novels to share. A big part of Read Comics in Public Day is sharing and discovering new titles.

This is the fourth year of this international event, originally founded in 2010 as a day to show off your love of comic books by being seen reading them in public.
http://www.facebook.com/readcomicsinpublic

It's a public event, so feel free to invite other people. Children encouraged.

My thanks to Chriss Cornish for hosting this event again this year!

Hope to see some of you in the San Diego Metro Area at this event!

For a pictorial on what this event is about... Here is the link to the special photo album on the 2012 event in San Diego!

~ Michael
