Fifty Years Ago In The Town Of San Diego...

Fifty Years Ago In The Town Of San Diego...
Came The Beatles!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4050 -   Yes... 50 Years Ago this weekend came The Beatles to San Diego!

They came for one night only during their tour of America back in 1965!

The place the concert was at was the San Diego High School's Balboa Stadium!

I was still up in Kodiak, Alaska where my Navy Dad was stationed, so I missed out on this event.  But then again I was only 13 at the time, so the odds of me attending would have been plenty slim.

The Beatles were pretty big in Kodiak, as I remember singing the Beatles songs on the school bus from the Navy Base to the Catholic School in the town of Kodiak.  (St. Mary's.)

The concert was NOT a sellout on this tour, as it was a surprise event, squeezed in before their scheduled event in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl on August 29th & 30th.

The schedule was called the 'North American Summer Tour'.  There were a few sellouts on the tour, but at San Diego only 17,013 of the 27,014 available tickets were bought.

The Beatles earned $50,135.17 for this performance, just a little over the $50,000 they were guaranteed in advance.

The stadium therefore wasn't full, but for San Diego that was a huge crowd back in those days.

There wasn't another concert at San Diego in the future, as The Beatles stopped touring in 1966.  They ceased to be a band as of 1970 as well...

In addition to The Beatles, the opening acts were Cannibal and The Headhunters, Brenda Holloway, Sounds Incorporated, and King Curtis.  Ever hear of them?!

BTW, most of the Balboa Stadium was torn down in 1979, so you can't even go back to where the Beatles performed!

Oh,and you want to know what the backstage food and accouterments were?  How about:  two cases of soda, two tubs of Kentucky Fried Chicken, three portable TV sets, four cots and sets of clean sheets, five 1 gallon bottle of water and 24 assorted sandwiches!  Total cost $33.06!

Oh, and what does this have to do with comic books?

Well, the Beatles were featured in several comic books over the years, as seen at this link.

One of my favorites were when The Thing & The Human Torch met the Beatles as seen on the Strange Tales cover for #130 published March of 1965!

And to think... It was 50 Years Ago This Very Weekend that the Beatles played in the Town of San Diego!

For those of you near San Diego... On September 1st at 12:50 pm there will be: 'The 50th Anniversary' of the Beatles 1965 Balboa Stadium Concert at the Saville Theatre, San Diego City College, at 1450 C Street, Downtown San Diego.  Admission is Free for the students and the public!

Tales Of The Gold Monkey... As A Comic Book Feature!
Mood:  cool
Topic: Comic Book History

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Is Pleased To See...

Tales Of The Gold Monkey
As A Comic Book Feature Series!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4049 -   As long time readers of this blog already know... I'm a big fan of Quantum Leap, the TV Show, that ran from 1989 to 1993 for five seasons.  (Here's a link to my previous blogs on Quantum Leap.)

The creator of that show was Donald Bellisario, who was also involved in other mighty fine TV series, including:  Magnum P.I., Airwolf, JAG, and NCIS.

In between Magnum & Airwolf was a TV show that lasted just one season titled: Tales of the Gold Monkey.

I watched that season on TV and was sad to see it not be picked up for another year.  I did not know that there was a comic book feature of the show that ran in a United Kingdom comic book titled:  TV Comic.

Tales of the Gold Monkey started in Issue #1,656 (16 September 1983) as "Tales of the Gold Monkey" and was drawn by Geoff Campion.  The feature finishes in the last issue of TV Comic #1,697, which was published on 29 June 1984.  Here is the link to the uploaded pages of the feature.

Geoff Campion was the well known British illustrator who set the 'House Style' in the 1950s & 1960s for AP / Fleetway adventure strips.  His work on 'Tales of the Gold Monkey' can be seen at the following link which is provided by Patricia Annino.

I am pleased to have found this out while checking out several Wikipedia entries while watching a Quantum Leap rerun.  Thus I am sharing this new found knowledge with you today.

Fans of Donald Bellisario, Tales of the Gold Monkey, Geoff Campion and / or comic book history should be pleased with this news if they were not already aware of it...

Sad To Hear Of The Passing of Yvonne Craig aka Batgirl
Mood:  down

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Is Sad To Mention The Passing Of...

Yvonne Craig
(aka Batgirl on the 1966 Batman TV Show Series!)

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4048 -   I just read of the passing of Yvonne Craig, who died August 17th of 2015.

I had the fortune of meeting Yvonne a few times at conventions, including the San Diego Comic Con in 1996 with Julie Newmar, (blog #3173), and at the Wizard World Anaheim 2010, (blog #3112).

At the Wizard World Anaheim convention I mentioned the then upcoming book that I had written a chapter for, 'Gotham City 14 Miles', which she expressed interest in.  She then told me of her then recent book, 'From Ballet to the Batcave and Beyond'.  (Photo of her and her book at top right.)

Before Yvonne was 'Batgirl', I had seen her in several Elvis Presley films, and always enjoyed her roles in the films.

She also was 'Marta', the green skinned Orion girl in the Original Star Trek episode 'Whom Gods Destroy'.

Yvonne was definitely a fine actress during her screen career. For more info, please see her Wikipedia entry.

I feel sad about her passing at the age of 78.  I am glad I got to meet her during the years.

My condolences to her family and friends...

~ Michael

Quoted In A Doctoral Thesis...

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That He Was Quoted In...

A Doctoral Thesis By
Caitlin Foster
(Titled: Clash of the Industry Titans: Marvel, DC and the Battle for Market Dominance!)

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4047 -   At the top of this blog post is a scan of the front page of the Doctoral Thesis by Caitlin Foster, at the University of Western Ontario, which was published August of 2013.

The title of the thesis is... Clash of the Industry Titans: Marvel, DC and the Battle for Market Dominance.

I bring this up because on pages 55 & 56 she quotes me from the chapter I wrote in the 'Gotham City 14 Miles' book that was published in 2010.  I was one of the authors of that book that was edited by James Beard.

I've blogged about the ongoing process of the book being written, printed & promoted over the years that it took to get all of that process completed!  Here are the blog links plus what others wrote about the book and/or me!

So what is this thesis about?  Here's the abstract:

"This thesis examines the corporate structures, marketing strategies and economic shifts that have influenced the recent resurgence of the comic book superhero in popular Hollywood cinema.

Using their original texts and adaptation films, this study will chronologically examine how each company’s brand identities and corporate structures have reacted to and been shaped by the major cultural and industrial shifts of the past century in its attempt to account for the varying success of these companies throughout their histories.

Beginning with the superhero’s first appearance on screen in the 1940s, this study traces the development of Marvel and DC’s distinct brand identities through their major franchises including Superman, Batman, Captain America, X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and The Avengers. In particular, this thesis links cultural and commercial dominance of Marvel’s independent, vertically integrated corporate structure to its proliferation of blockbuster film adaptations over the past decade."

Ok... Now that is a subject that would interest me!

So I went on to the Table of Contents:

Abstract ........................................................................................................................................... ii
Acknowledgements ........................................................................................................................ iii
Table of Contents ........................................................................................................................... iv
List of Figures ................................................................................................................................. v
Introduction ..................................................................................................................................... 1

Origin Stories: The Birth of the Comic Book Industry in the 1930s-1940s ................................. 15
Chapter 2 ....................................................................................................................................... 32
Super-Seal of Approval:  DC’s Proliferation of Family Values & The Comics Code of America

Mighty Marvel: The Emergence of Marvel Comics in the 1960s and 1970s ............................... 42

Again, the above chapter titles piqued my interest.

So I read it.  All of it.  Pretty darn good reading!

My compliments to Caitlin Foster for writing this thesis.  And for referencing some of my published material in her thesis!

For those of you that wish to read it also, here is the link to the thesis

Update On The Mid 1970s Comic Book Dealers...
Mood:  chatty
Topic: Comic Cons

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents An Update On The...

The Mid 1970s Comic Book Dealers!
(As Shown At Various Sources!)

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4046 -   At the left is an advertisement page from a mid 1977 Marvel Comics book.

Mid 1970's Comic Books Dealers advertising on this nationwide page were:

Richard Alf of San Diego CA, Robert Bell of Hauppage NY,  Howard Rogofsky of Flushing NY, Discount Comics from Santee CA, American Comic Book Company from Studio City CA, Grand Book Inc from Brooklyn NY, Clint's Comics from Kansas City MO, and Superhero Comics from Weston Canada.

Recently I posted the membership page of the 1973 San Diego Comic Con on my Facebook Page.  As seen at this link.  The page was posted small via the Facebook photo procedure, so I'm going to list here in my blog those names identified as dealers.

Those dealers included:  #6 Larry Bigman, #11 Joe Colabella, #16 Gary Nishimura, #17 Mark Reynolds, #24 Melville C Hill, #25 Lucas Dang, #26 Gary Carter (later the publisher of Comic Book Marketplace!), #29 North County Book Shop, #30 Bob Sidebottom (later an Editor of a few comic books), #40 Tom Heaton, # 42 Joe Kotuna, #43 Tony Raiola, #44 Shane Shellenbarger, #74 Roger C Nelson, #78 David Boring, #91 Lance Casebeer, #93 Jay Knowles, #121 Don Morris, #122 Russ Cochran - (still selling today), #127 Jim Buser, #128 Joe Swan, #129 Will Conine, #136 Marc Zarkarin, #145 Harry A Hopkins, #150 Tom Tallmon, #169 David T Alexander (still a dealer today in 2015), #174 Michael D Haw(m)ersky (that's me!), #188 Terry Stroud (still a comics dealer & was a comic book writer), #195 Arnold Berman, #198 Tom French (SDCC's dealer room organizer - died 1997), & #201 Prince & the Pauper Imported Toys.

If you have been buying comics since the 1970s, you will recognize several of the above names!   Some like myself went on to advertise in The Buyers Guide, as well as other publications.  Some just sold at comic cons that sprang up nationwide during the following years!

Also, the photo to the left is a photo of myself holding the 1973 San Diego Comic Con Souvenir Book, along with a copy of the 2pages showing the 1973 membership list as of date of publication!

BTW before I forget... Richard Alf, named in the first paragraph above, who also had bought many of my duplicates issues before I started dealing myself, went on to sell out to Chuck Rozanski, Owner of Mile High Comics in Colorado, in 1978. Richard had built his mail order business into a going concern, but by then there were some major competitors in mail order including Pacific Comics (also in San Diego), Passaic Book Center and of course Robert Bell.

I will be adding more info to this mini-history in the months to follow...

~ Michael
