Who's Got 'The Helm' ?!

Who's Got 'The Helm'?!

Click Here to see our newly listed Comics, Graphic Novels, Books and other listings for sale!

Well, if You missed the four issue mini-series...  Then You will have another chance to purchase it in April 2009 when the trade paperback collection is published!

Jim Hardison, (pictured at top right), sent me review copies of his mini-series that was printed just last year.  He had told me that the TPB will be available this April when I had asked him about his first comic book work.

Upon receiving the package, I immediately read the series in total.  Which is what a reader of the upcoming TPB would be doing.

Not to give away the whole four issues, but here is what the first issue of the story arc was about:

"Matt Blurdy's day has gone from crap to worse. Not only did his girlfriend break his heart at work -- and in front of all of the video-store patrons -- but he just got fired. All that's left to do is minibike his sorry, thirty-year-old (and freshly unemployed!) butt back home to his mom's basement and drown his sorrows in a bucket of extra-crispy chicken while contemplating where his life went wrong.

On the way home, Matt decides to quiet his aching heart with a brief detour to a garage sale. When an ancient-looking helmet calls to him as "the Chosen One," exhorting him to don the mantle of the "Valhalladrim," Matt touches it with trembling fingers -- and is jolted by raw magical power. Holy crap! Is he going to be a superhero? Is this why he always felt special even when everyone else thought he was a loser? Then the helm gets a sense of whom it's dealing with. Suddenly, it changes its tune: 'I was mistaken. You are not the chosen one. Good day.' "

That first issue got my interest.  Even though Jim was a newcomer to comics writing at the time of publication, he does come from a cinematic background, which assisted him in starting this four issue story arc and piquing my interest.

Additionally, he was assisted in visualizing the story by Bart Sears, whose artwork I have watched since his Valiant Comics Days of X-O Manowar and Turok.  The pencils were inked ably by Randy Elliott, and I especially liked the colors by Dan Jackson.  The colors made the magical scenes in the issues really stand out for me!

This four issue story arc held my attention, and since I had all four issues to read at once, I did so.  The storyline was plausible, contained humourous scenes, and was not overtly violent for an adventure / action type of comic book. However, I would agree with the Dark Horse rating of 14+ for reading this mini-series or TPB compilation, as there is a subtle sexual scene or two. (Note: there isn't any rating on the comic book covers.)

The only part of this four issue arc that I could 'nitpick' a little was in the final issue, where the story seemed to wrap up just a little too quickly in the final pages, (pages pacing?). The storyline had progressed smoothly up to that point... yet I was left feeling pleased with the mini-series ending when it wrapped up.

BTW, I really enjoyed the 'Letters Page' that started in the first issue and continued through the last issue.  Being 'Old School' I still enjoy those little touches that some creators deem to put in!

I am looking forward to seeing more from this writer, and suggest if you have not yet read this mini-series, you might want to check out the TPB.  I do not see if there are any additional pages containing non-published pages or background storyline in the TPB when checking out the Dark Horse Comics web site at:

The Latest Chapter Of...

The FAT Man

Is Now Online

Introducing Louise Brooks!

Click Here to see our current listed Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels!

By Thomas Cochrane and Alan Tanner!

Click Here to see our current listed Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels!  Thomas Cochrane sent me notice that his online serialized graphic novel...  Has a New Chapter added!

Along with Alan Tanner, the artist for this project, Thomas is weaving a story that has several elements that I enjoy in books and on TV.

I'm not going to rehash my whole previous blog post about this project as there is not enough room in a blog format, so... To see my previous blog post about this work, please click here.

This latest chapter is introducing a new major character... Louise Brooks.  Here's the Synopsis of the story, in the author's own words:

"Responsible for the death of millions, the mysterious 'Tegel Project' threatens the very core of civilisation. Betrayed by MI5, the Fat Man finds himself caught between the blazing guns of would-be assassins and the blood-red lips of silent movie star Louise Brooks. Unable to trust anyone and faced with a series of unpalatable choices, he careers madly along the arch of time on the seemingly impossible mission of keeping himself and his lover alive."

For those that are new to an online serialized graphic novel concept... This graphic novel is presented in a format that uses the 'My eBook' reader. It is interesting that as you 'turn' the pages, you hear the sound of pages turning.  I did find the page turner mechanism a little hard to use, but that is the software's fault, not of the writer/artist team.

There is a 'promo movie video' for this graphic novel, as well as several 'wallpapers' for your computer's desktop at the web site should this serialized project grab your interest as it did mine!

The serialized online graphic novel and the wallpapers can be viewed at:

http://www.the-fat-man.co.uk

After viewing the graphic novel, and you find yourself interested in knowing more about this work, you are welcome to join The Fat Man group if you are a Facebook member at:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=21043026251&ref=mf

For myself, I know that I will continue reading this story. Except for a few curse words, the story so far is of a PG-13 rating. I am a 'sucker' for well written time travel stories, as seen by my blog posts so far on 'Life On Mars', 'Journeyman', 'Quantum Leap', and the like.

This GN 'The Fat Man' has my interest.  I have joined the FaceBook Group to be reminded when the next chapter is online. Should you enjoy the story as published so far online, I would suggest doing the same!

(Please Note: A complimentary hard copy for this mention / review was not provided by the creator as it is in online format only.)

Kevin H Dixon Coming To MoCCA Fest 2009!

Kevin H Dixon, Known For "Gilgamesh"

Will Be Attending MoCCA Fest 2009

June 6th - 7th, 2009

Click Here to see our newly listed Comics, Graphic Novels, Books and other listings for sale!

Kevin H Dixon... Sent me copies of his Gilgamesh comic publication recently for review.  After reading the three issues currently printed, I asked him about plans for a fourth issue.

He replied that he was currently working on the next installment of his Gilgamesh adaptation and that he was planning to have it available for MoCCA 2009.

I have not yet mentioned MoCCA Fest in this Blog, although I have blogged about MoCCA itself, and the several exhibits that have been there recently. (Click here for my recent blog posts on those.)

The MoCCA Fest is June 6-7th this year, in N.Y.C.  Kevin himself says "If you've never been there, it's definitely one to check out. Caters to the unusual, underground, self publishers and 'alternative' stuff".

Real quick.... here's a little about the Festival that Kevin and his friend Paul Friedrich will be attending:

"The 2009 MoCCA Art Festival will take place the weekend of June 6-7 at the 69th Regiment Armory at Lexington Avenue and 25th Street in New York City.  As the 69th Regiment Armory is a much larger venue, nearly 100 more exhibitors will be attending, and arranged in a more democratic manner than in previous years. The festival will be open to the public from 11:00am to 6:00pm both days. General admission is $10/day or $15/weekend but is only $10/weekend for MoCCA members."

The 'Gilgamesh' adaptation is just one of several projects Kevin has been involved in during the years. There is a link to his other works following my brief review of the first three issues of 'Gilgamesh'.

At first look at the cover of Issue One of 'Gilgamesh', it is striking how the artwork is both of a 'biblical' and of an 'alternative' or 'underground'  style of artwork to me. The inside preface page gives the reader a sense of how Kevin & Kent Dixon, writers of this issue are going to take this long told tale and make it their own. The story is illustrated by Kevin in a black and white interior page format.

This story is not for young children, because as in 'underground' comics of old, there are some scenes of nudity and sexual references.  However, getting past that, the story is one that is interesting enough for me to want to continue, and I for one was glad that I had the second issue on hand to read next.

Issue two's preface page brings new readers up to date as to what had happened thus far, although I would reccomend reading this adapatation from issue one first.  The black and white format continues in this issue and the story progresses.

Issue three shows on the inside cover that this issue and the two previous issues could now be purchased at lulu.com. The inside preface page does a good job once again informing previous and new readers as to what happened thus far in the storyline.  Please note: Issue one was published in 2006, two in 2007, and three presumably in 2008.  The storyline becomes a little more graphic, and thus my earlier warning of this publication Not being for kids is repeated.

As mentioned at the top of this blog post, an issue four is being worked on now.  I find this adaptation thus far to be one that I am interested enough in to want to see issue four.  Whether the storyline and artwork style is one that would interest you, can be resolved by your taking a look at some preview pages of this adaptation and also a few pages of Kevin's other works by taking advantage of the following link if you are a Facebook member. You can also find his work to purchase by contacting him there or by checking out his work on lulu.com, or by attending the upcoming MoCCA Fest as mentioned several paragraphs above.
