Daniel Miki's Sketch Cards

For 'Comics For Cures'!

The Benefit Auction Runs March 28th - April 4th, 2009 With Listings on eBay!

Click here to see our current listings of HoRRoR and MoNSTer Graphic Novels, Comics, Magazines, and other Pop Culture Items for Sale! Daniel Miki... Best known as an inker in the comic book industry, tells me that he has 8 illustrated sketch cards listed in the 'Sketch Card Auction and Gallery Show for American Cancer Society'!

What makes Daniel's contributions to this benefit auction special is that Daniel rarely pencils, thus making these sketch card contributions of his a rather 'rare' set of cards!

Besides the first set of four cards shown above with Captain America, Iron Man, Silver Surfer, and the Man-Thing, there is a second set of cards... which you can see for yourself when checking out the auction listings in the link provided below!

Here are the details for the benefit from the 'Comics For Cures' web site as this blog post is published:

Blue Line Art has been organizing their second annual exhibition and auction of original sketch card art to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Their first event in March of 2008 showcased 200 artist with over 1200 sketch cards. They raised over $7,400 for the American Cancer Society and are hoping that this current event will be bigger and better in raising funds.

There will be a public exhibition at Comics 2 Games, Florence, Ky location on April 4th 2009. The auction of all the original art cards will go online starting the week before the Sketch Card exhibition and will end that evening. All proceeds from the sale of the cards will go to the American Cancer Society.

Bob and Mike Hickey, founders and owners of Blue Line Art, are organizing this fundraiser in honor of Bob’s wife Katie, a breast cancer survivor. Blue Line publishes Sketch Magazine and Graphic Novel Scene and sells Blue Line Art boards to both comic book companies and individual artists. The Hickey family has long been aware of the generosity of the comic book community. All involved are looking forward to another successful event that celebrates the diversity of comic book artists’ unique talents and their heroic spirit of helping those in need!

For those of you that are interested in bidding on Daniel's sketch cards, or any other sketch cards to raise funds, please check out the following link to take you to the eBay page where all of those auction listings are listed until the end of the auction time:  Click Here!

(Note: Make It So Marketing Inc is NOT affialiated with Comics For Cures, nor any of the sponsors of the benefit auction. This is for review / mention purposes only, and to hi-light Daniel Miki's contributions to the fund raiser.)

Come April 1st... It's YOUR Turn To Vote For The

Small Press Idol!

And That's NO April Fool's Day Joke!

Erik W Hendrix...  Has been sending out several notices that the judges for the 'Small Press Idol', (SPI), are no longer the Only Ones that Can Vote on entries that were submitted to the contest.  Well at least starting April 1st that is!

Click Here to see our current listed Comics, Magazines, Games and more!  Erik wrote me:  "I will end up sending a couple more of these before voting starts on April 1st, but just a reminder. If you have not already done so, please go to dimestoreproductions.com and sign up. The link is near the top left corner and it's a really quick and easy process. A link to the process I wrote on "how to sign up" is below.

Note: If you signed up but didn't get a confirmation email, send an email to ian@dimestoreproductions.com from the account you used to sign up and ask him to activate you.

Note 2: Starting on April 1st, you get ONE VOTE PER DAY, so please go onto the site daily and vote for your favorite (hopefully it's Faction).

Process for voting: http://www.geocities.com/thelastbard/faction/SPI-JoinForums.doc

Link directly to sign up for DimeStore:
http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/signup.php ."

My thanks to Erik for re-submitting this reminder to so many!  FYI, Erik also has an entry titled 'Faction', which is one of the 27 entries that are moving on to Round 2 of SPI... so give his work a look at also if you are so inclined!

Click Here to see our current listed Comics, Magazines, Games and more! Ian Shires , (pictured to the left), listed on the main web site all 27 of the projects that made it into Round 2.   By making it that far all 27 are set to have their projects printed in 'Mysterious Visions' at the very least.

Ian also says "But more over, they are still in contention for the $700 cash prize, 4-issue publishing commitment grand prize. So take a moment this week to check them all out, make your own notes about them, and get ready for Round 2 where we turn up the heat big time, and YOUR VOTES COUNT!"

For those of you that have missed my previous blog posts on SPI, you may be thinking "So what exactly is Small Press Idol?".  I'll let their web site promo say it for them:

"Small Press Idol is the greatest amateur's contest in comics, mixing a bit of American Idol with a bit of The Apprentice, and a bunch of our own special social experiment elements. This contest is not for everyone...but it will be fun, and, for those that participate, it will challenge you to be the best you can be. If you survive round 1, your work WILL BE PUBLISHED! This year: We have national store distribution! It's our biggest year ever!"

So starting April 1st, 2009, YOU can start voting for your faves on Small Press Idol... so take the time now to register and take part!

Not Just Conan... But Also WULF The Barbarian!

Wulf the Barbarian ran for four issues in 1975. The series was published by Atlas Seaboard Comics.

Not Just Conan, But Also...

WULF The Barbarian!

Click Here To See Our Current Listings including several of Larry Hama's works listed for sale!

Based on the works by Larry Hama

Yesterday I blogged about the latest release in the set of... Conan The Barbarian statues based on the John Buscema & Ernie Chan cover for issue #88 of Marvel Comics 'Conan The Barbarian'.  I was blogging about the 'Belit - Queen of the Black Coast' statue that will be available in April.

After the blog post was published, I received several emails, questions, messages and comments about both blog versions of the post, which I was thankful for!

One question in particular asked me if there were any other Sword and Sorcery Comics that I would recommend for reading, since it looked like I knew something on S&S comics...

And I thought back to an earlier blog post where I delved into the short history of 'Wulf The Barbarian' that was created by Larry Hama.

When the Atlas - Seaboard comics were first printed, there weren't any trade paper back compilations being printed, and 'Graphic Novels' were just being thought of.  So to read these four issues of 'Wulf the Barbarian' you would have to purchase the individual copies of the issues.

Here is what I blogged about before on Wulf's history:

Larry Hama, (pictured above right), is known for his many projects in the Comics World, including G.I. Joe Comics!

One that doesn't appear in many of his bios or credits is the Atlas Seaboard Comic Book Series, 'Wulf The Barbarian'.

Larry wrote the script and did the pencils on issues #1-2 of this 4 issue series.

I recently picked up a collection of Atlas - Seaboard Comics and decided to re-read them, as it has been a few years since I did so.

Wulf the Barbarian was an unusual sword and sorcery title for its' time. I enjoyed the first two issues of this series by Larry.

Larry went on to become a writer of another barbarian, Conan the Barbarian for Marvel Comics! He also become an editor for that series later.

Wulf's adventures took place on an unamed planet.

He was seen as a street beggar at first. We find out that he was actually the orphaned son of a king, and that his royal protector, Stavro, must hide him for ten years until Wulf becomes of age to take back the royal throne.

However Stravo himself is killed by minions of the man that killed Wulf's father. Wulf takes on the quest to avenge Stravo and also reclaim his throne.

Issue #3 was written by Steve Skeates and drawn by Leo Summer. Issue #4 was written by Mike Friedrich and Jim Craig was the penciller.

I re-read the entire series, and realized that although I enjoyed the series as a whole, it was the first two issues that set the pace for the series.

Unfortunately this four issue series is just one of the twenty-three comic book series that were ended far too soon when Atlas Seaboard closed its' doors in 1975.

Martin Goodman, who had started what we now know as Marvel Comics, had started this Atlas Seaboard Company in 1974, after he had sold Marvel Comics.

There are 22 other comic book titles that could be blogged about here, as well as 5 magazine titles that Atlas Seaboard also published.

Those will wait for another time, as this blog post is about Larry Hama's contribution to the Wulf the Barbarian title for Atlas Seaboard.

So, I emailed the link to the first blog post to the party asking the question of me, and thought with all of the new blog readers, that it would warrant re-posting here today.

There are other Sword and Sorcery series that I have enjoyed during the years, but that 4 issue series of 'Wulf the Barbarian' is one of the easiest and least expensive to find to read.  And yes, we also have a few copies of that series in different grades, from 'reader' copies to collector copies in our online store, if you can't find them at your usual source of buying comics!

(Please Note: A complimentary item for this mention / review was NOT provided as Atlas Seaboard Publishing has been defunct for several years!)

Belit, Queen Of The Black Coast In Statuesque Form!

BELIT, QUEEN OF THE BLACK COAST!

Click Here to see our newly listed CONAN comics, graphic novels, and other pop culture listings for sale!

Based on the cover of Conan the Barbarian Marvel Comics Book #88 with art by John Buscema & Ernie Chan

Every so often I stop blogging about comics or graphic novels or comic book movies... And just gape at some statues that are being released now for collectors...

Like the one above!  Belit, Queen of the Black Coast, is just one of a set of three statues that are being released one at a time in this mini-series.

The reason this set strikes me is that it is based on a Conan the Barbarian comic book cover from Marvel Comics... AND the cover of this issue #88 was drawn by John Buscema with Ernie Chan!

Those two artists had a long run together when Marvel still had the rights to publish Conan.   Matter of fact, I can still visualize 'Big John' Buscema stating at his last San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) appearance, that Conan was what he enjoyed most illustrating at Marvel.  Like a big grizzly bear John repeatedly stated at the special SDCC program that he didn't like drawing superheroes, although his style at Marvel was overwhemingly loved by superhero fans, myself included.

It was Conan that he enjoyed most, and he verbally stated that he wished he had started sooner drawing him.  However when Marvel starting adapting stories from Conan's history, the company did not want a higher paid page rate artist drawing the then mostly unknown character as a comic book series.  At that time the 'Sword and Sorcery' genre had not really started in comics, although the paperbacks with Conan was a proven good seller in that market.

It wasn't until later that John was able to drawn the series as well as the black and white magazines published by Marvel at that time.

Back to the statue... Although the look is from the cover of issue #88, this piece is sculpted by Seth Vandable.  Conan has already been released, and Belit will be followed by Zula later.

The best thing about the Belit statue above is that all three statues in the set are designed with matching bases for display!  The Belit statue stands 13.5' tall and features her gripping both sword and dagger!

Here's the point of this blog post:  Belit is already painted and ready to display when you buy her... BUT this Belit statue will be limited to a 500 edition run.  So Don't Miss Out if you have any interest in Belit, Conan, Zula or all three!  There are a lot of Robert E Howard (REH) cross over fans out there that make something like this a probable sell-out!  Even at the MSRP Of $239.00!

No, we here at Make It So Marketing won't be selling any of the three statues!   I just wanted to point out this set, as this type of quality wasn't around when I was collecting models or statues earlier in my lifetime!

So either check your favorite online source for a pre-order, or check the web site at:  http://www.hardhero.com/belit-statue.html

(Please Note: A complimentary statue or other item for this mention / review was NOT provided.)
