This comic book is being released November 15th and the creator / publisher has asked me if I would mention it in my Blog....

Since a preview copy of the comic book that is the first issue of a new ongoing series came in with the request, I thought I would include it in today's blog post.  I'm always interested in new comics, especially those that are the first issue of a proposed ongoing series, although I may not blog about all the comics that come in for possible review in the 'Main Feature' section of this blog.

First, here's what the Press Release said about the comic book:

"Legend has returned from retirement only to find the world on the brink of domination at the hands of his long-time nemesis, Anthrax and his team has been replaced by a rowdy, disorderly band of ex-super-criminals. HOW can Legend win and WHO can he trust.

There is an invisible war going on without our knowledge. A battle being waged between our government and an alien empire bent on enslaving our entire species. It is a fight that we are losing and our only hope is a super-human military force known as THE MAJESTIC-XII."

Here are the credits:

Created by Justin Leach and Andrew Kilian.

Written by Justin Leach.

Penciled and inked by Andrew Kilian, with coloring by Omi Remalante Jr. with Lettering by Jon Zamar.

24 pages, bi-monthly, on-going series, and produced by Odyssey Comics

Okay, so why did I take the time to blog about this first issue in the 'Main Feature' section of my Blog?

Like I said, I like to read first issues of proposed ongoing series or mini-series, so I first of all can possibly enjoy a new story arc, and / or mention it in my Blog. Independent publishers can use the mention, promotion, or publicity, especially in today's economy.

So let me talk about the storyline here. I understood from the series' title that there will be 12 team members.  Okay, that's a goodly amount of characters.  Quite often that is too many to deal with in a first issue.  So I wondered how the writer would solve that possible problem in introducing the characters.

That is where I got a little confused... Sure there were little green colored boxes by each of the newly introduced characters that stated the name of the character and what they were, but the characters came in so fast that I was a little overwhelmed.  So many team books have a problem in keeping the reader interested in their favorite characters that having too many characters could be a problem.  (Side Note: See the last two seasons of the TV Show 'Heroes' for what I mean about too many characters in an ongoing series in any format.)

I know from reading team books like The Avengers from Marvel Comics in the Silver and Bronze Ages, that there were limits on how many Avengers would be brought in for a storyline from a team membership of what seemed to be hundreds!  Quite often if the action was too much for a smooth storyline, the Avengers would be split into different teams.  Those different teams would  keep the action flowing and not have large panels with masses of characters everywhere.  Several great artists during the Silver Age had trouble keeping the panels flowing with action with too many superheroes and villains in the scenes.  One artist that stood out in later years was George Perez who definitely could draw crowded character scenes!

I understand from conversing with Justin before writing this blog,  that he got what I meant in stating the above about all the characters being introduced so quickly in the first issue.  So with that part covered now in this post... let me move on to the premise of the story.

The storyline was a little 'familiar' to me, but the characters introduced did have different powers.  I liked the initial opening scenes on the first two pages of the book, which occured in the past.  That was a good start.  Then it jumps to 'today'.  That is where the action immediately starts with the introduction of all the characters...  But I've already mentioned that.  So on with the dialogue, which flows with the storyline, and helps set up the pace for the second issue.

With all of the introductions of characters boxes and multiple characters' dialogue, the lettering does get a little cluttered in a few panels.  But for the most part it works with the crowd scenes.

Talking about the crowd scenes... it's got to be hard to illustrate so many characters right off the bat and keep all the character features and costumes straight.  I give credit to the artist for presenting what he did in the first issue.

The coloring on this book brought out the flavor of the book that I believe the writer and artist envisioned the first issue to present.  The colors chosen were just right for the individual background scenes and accentuated the characters in each panel.

Okay, I've covered the storyline, dialogue, artwork, lettering and coloring.  Now here's where YOU come in.  If you enjoy team books, then you should take a look at the following two links and click on them.  If team books are not your thing, but indie comics are what you like, then take a look at what this publisher is presenting. It's good to see what is out there for your posible entertainment.  If you enjoy getting in on the 'ground floor' of a proposed ongoing series, then do check it out.  Also, if you are a Facebook member and would like to post your input on this publication, feel free to do so by joining the 'event' shown below.  This series is projected to be printed quarterly.

Most of my Blog readers will know that I joined the Facebook Comic Con (FBCC) right after it first kicked off earlier this year.  So when there is an event, I either try to attend as a 'judge' or 'reviewer' or just publicize what is happening in this Blog.

A while back I kept seeing info on a video based art show that was going to be held at the FBCC.  Not totally understanding where the creators of this project were going with this, I held off mentioning it until seeing it for the first time yesterday when it was first uploaded to their Facebook Comic Con Group Page.   There are six (6) approximately twenty minute clips in this FREE Virtual Premiere at their FBCC group page event.

However, PLEASE NOTE:  This event only runs from November 12th thru the 15th. After that, the event closes.  So, do as I did and see if the first clip grabs your interest or not BEFORE the FREE viewing closes!   Both Tina and I viewed the original film many years ago, and we will be watching this before the Virtual Premiere ends.  I don't have our responses to this yet, as we have not seen it in its entirety.  It was just uploaded yesterday for viewing!  Following is the info from the Event Organizer:

NOTLD:R Virtual Premiere
--------------------------------
Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated ( NOTLD:R ), will be screening November 12-15th, 2009 as part of the Facebook Comic-Con (a free virtual convention occurring through the architecture of Facebook). For this screening the event page (typically just used to announce the time and place of real world events) doubles as the venue and those 'attending' the event will be able to view the entire feature length project for free from the comfort of their own homes... well before it's official release. The project is now live and will remain online until November 15th, at which time, it will be taken down thus ending the screening event.

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=160692464632

Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated a video based art show. Artists from around the world were invited to select scenes from the original film and make them their own. With no restrictions on style, media or process the resulting works ranged from oil paintings to comic illustrations and sock puppets to digital animation. These works were then curated into a visual track of artwork and set to the audio of George A. Romero's masterpiece, 'Night of the Living Dead'.

NOTLD:R is not meant to replace the original film but rather to supplement your viewing experience by allowing you to see the film through the eyes and hands of these talented individuals.

Feedback is welcomed. Enjoy the show.

Organizer/ Curator of NOTLD:R

My thanks to those at FBCC and to those at NOTLD:R for staging this Virtual Premiere at Facebook Comic Con.  It is good to see other events happening there inbetween the major  FBCC convention programs.  For those of You that haven't 'been' to a FBCC event, this one might be up your alley, especially if you are into that type of genre. After all FBCC is running something all the time... 24 / 7 / 365.   Here is the 'Gateway' to the FBCC:  click here!

HORROR COMICS FEATURETTE:   Below is a photo of the first issue of the HYBRID mini-series from Studio 407. I picked up a few copies of this comic at a recent comic con.  Also recently I became Facebook Friends with the artist of this series, Pablo Churin.  I'm looking at possibly blogging about this mini-series as a 'Main Feature' in this Blog, but have only seen the 1st issue so far. However, as you can see from the cover shown below, the artwork kind of grabs you to pick it up and see what is inside.  The storyline and the artwork inside defintely grabbed my interest!

I wanted to mention this mini-series as a 'Featurette' article today, because the 'Main Feature' of this Blog is also of a HoRRoR bent today.  We have a few copies of the 1st issue of this mini-series at a low introductory price of $1.95 plus shipping in our eBay Store, (click here for store aisle).

You can also join Studio 407's Facebook Group Page by clicking here.

You can see more of Pablo's artwork by sending him a Facebook Friends Request to Pablo Churin.  Since there are a few different individuals with that same name, here is the link to him: (click here).

This past Sunday I blogged that the creators of FACTION, the comic book that won the 2009 Small Press Idol Contest (SPI), would be signing the special Zero Issue this Wednesday the 11th of November, at a Local Comic Book Shop (LCBS) in San Diego.

For those of you that weren't able to attend this special signing yesterday, I've published a few photos from the signing above.

Of course the 'hi-lite' of the signing for most persons there was seeing the actual copy of the comic book, which had taken months to put together, as it progressed from its' beginning stages in Round 1 of SPI to finally being the winner in Round 4!

Those store customers that were there basically for 'New Comics Day' at SoCal Comics also had the pleasure of meeting the FACTION creators, Erik & Arnie, who were sitting right next to the 'new comics racks' at their booth.  (Shown in the top right photo.)

I have stated before that Tina and I first met Erik W and his wife Amanda Hendrix back on the night of May 30th at Sky High Comic's "A Night Of Art - Music - Comics In San Marcos California!"  (click here for that post).

However, I had not yet met Arnie Gordon, the artist for this #0 issue until yesterday.  Arnie was a great guy to meet, who although a 'quiet' guy at the signing event, lets his pencils speak for him!  Glad to have finally met you Arnie... looking forward to rest of the story arc from you and Erik!

In the middle photo of the photos published at the top right of this post is SoCal's owner, Jamie Newbold.  He and I discussed the current status of 'comics sales' in the San Diego area, of which I will be sharing some of that with you in the days to come. I had previously mentioned Jamie's LCBS in my review of the 2009 Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) Event As Seen in the San Diego Metro Area: (Click for blog post.)

Store Location:  Southern California Comics
Street Address:  8280 Clairemont Mesa Bl. #124
City/Town:         San Diego, CA

For more info you can check his store's web site at:  http://www.socalcomics.com/.

Jamie's LCBS is where we get the majority of our comics bags and boards supplies for shipping our own online sales, even though they are approximately 30 miles away from us here in the city of Carlsbad, located in North San Diego County.

The third photo at the top right is just one of the dozen and half  persons that bought a copy of FACTION while I was there during the signing for a few hours of the event.  Thanks John for the conversation!  Also to Mike who is both a local teacher and a SDCC volunteer in the GRT department of that great Comic Con. Looking forward to perhaps seeing you again at the 2010 Comic Con International: San Diego!

Plus, Thanks again to Erik for sending me an invite to this signing! I was pleased to be able to attend this mid-week event!

Above:  Robert Roach at the 2009 LBCC holding issues #1 and 4 of his four issue mini-series at The Antidote Trust booth!

To the Left: Closer look at the Front Cover of Issue #1!

Earlier this year I blogged about a different mini-series that Robert Roach created, titled 'The Roach', which was Not an autobiographical set....

However, as I said in that blog, (click here for review), I thought it the best mini-series I had read in a long time!

So when I met Robert again, this time at the recent 2009 Long Beach Comic Con, he presented me with a full set of his earlier mini-series 'Menthu' to read and possibly review here.

Robert mentioned, (possibly as a warning?), that it was not at all like 'The Roach'.  And it wasn't.  So what was it about?

Here's the PR for issue #1:  Rashan N'Shanga's world has just turned upside-down. Overnight, he's become an Egyptian sungod and he now has to set out on a quest to figure out exactly what being a"god" means. Rashan's sojourn will span across our world and into Egyptian mythology's netherworld.

Here's the PR for issue #2:  Rashan's situation goes from bad to worse as he appears in the TaDjesart, ancient Egypt's "Underworld," on the unholy river, the Tuat. But if he thinks sharing unknown time in a boat with a rotting corpse for an oarman is "worse," then the "worst" is yet to come.

Here' the PR for issue #3:  In part 3 of 4, Rashan N’Shanga has finally been reunited with his father, Anhur, ancient Egypt’s God of War. After being "snack food" for a fire-breathing snake—not to mention being fished out of the river, half-dead—Rashan’s ready to relax & enjoy this reunion. But the young immortal has more hard facts of his origin to learn. And Set has NO intentions of allowing his 2 mortal enemies to enjoy a "happy ending".

I'm not going to post the PR for issue #4 here, as I don't like to post 'spoilers warnings' for the endings of mini-series if I can help it.  And with this mini-series already published, why give away the ending?

Very briefly, let me state Robert's publishing history of this 'Menthu' series.  Robert first started coming up with this mini-series back in 1991 when he listened to the CD titled "The Seven Souls" by an electic, ever changing group called 'Material'. The CD had seven songs, of which five of them contained narration by William S. Burroughs about Egyptian mythology.

Robert says "A chord deep in my imagination was struck when I heard the CD".  In 1992 Robert, while driving up the Pacific Coast Highway to Monterey, CA, came up with the story outline in his head.  However he didn't feel that he could do justice to the story until he improved his storytelling abilities.  By 1996 he was ready to start with the actual story.   In 1997 he published the first issue of Menthu, and then the second issue.  However, distribution problems kept him from finishing the series at that time.

In 2004 Robert decided to restart the mini-series, and had the art redone as well as the coloring and other production values.  This time he had the whole four issues of the mini-series printed in advance, so there would be No distribution issues.

Those involved with the mini-series production were: Robert Roach, Larry Welch, Bryan Taylor, Tony Stewart, and Yumi Roach.

Okay... so much for the PR and the history of this mini-series.  What did I think of this mini-series of Robert's?

Well, I found the story arc itself to be well paced, not rushed and most importantly not stretched out to fill the four issue story arc.

The dialogue of the characters were fitting and what I would expect those beings to possibly talk like.  The research behind this story arc had to be a project in itself, what with the variations of the stories from ancient Egypt, and with the different names of the gods used by other conquering nations since then to refer to the Egyptian gods.

The art is in a style that adds distinction to the panels, but it is the coloring of this series that really brings out the flavor of the artwork to me.  Additionally the paper used for the cover and the interior pages really makes the total package jump out at me!

The lettering is something a lot of readers don't really notice unless it bothers them.  Here the lettering fits each scene and each character without interferring with the artwork.

The cover art by Tony Stewart is well done, and most importantly doesn't conflict with the interior art.  Too often nowadays when the cover artist and the interior pages artist are not the same person, a browser  / possible purchaser of the publication will think 'what happened?!' when turning to the splash page with much different art than the cover.   Not here, the artwork flows smoothly between cover and interior pages.

I enjoyed reading this mini-series, especially with the letter columns taking the time to publish letters from those that saw the earlier publications from 1997 and then viewed new pages online from the revised edition.  Plus the time that Robert Roach spent in explaining what had happened to bring this mini-series to a restart and a conclusion.  It had to be hard to have 'letter columns' in a mini-series when the whole series was printed at once!

For those blog readers of mine that are into this type of story genre in prose form, I would have to say that it should be a very good read for them!  Add to it being told in very nice panelized sequential artform, and you have another winner from the Black Inc. Imprints / Hometown Productions publishing group!

To get started reading the first issue of the series just click the following link to be taken to Hometown Productions store: http://hometownprods.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=28

Thanks again to Robert for bringing this earlier work of his to my attention, AND also again to Dale Wilson of of DWAP Productions who has turned me on to several works that other members of The Antidote Trust have turned out!

The blog I was going to post this morning is not ready for publication as of yet, per the comic creator's request.  So I took a look at what my blog readers were viewing on my Blog Stats, and found that last year's Veterans Day blog post was getting a lot of hits overnight and into this morning....

So, I'm moving up tomorrow's scheduled blog post to today, as tomorrow is the day of rememberance for Veterans Day.  Here's the link to last year's blog post that is being heavily viewed overnite, (click here.)

Last year I was prompted to blog after seeing that CNN was airing their morning program from the deck of the USS Intrepid.  That ship is part of the Museum in Manhattan that Tina and I saw on a past trip to the Big Apple Con's "The National" comic book convention. The photo I used in last year's blog post showed several different exhibits at the Museum, including: The USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier, the USS Growler Nuclear Submarine, and the Concorde.

Tomorrow is our nation's day for honoring all of the Veterans that have served the country throughout its' history.

As you can see from the above two pictures, my Dad and Grandfather both served their Country.  (As well as multiple ancestors; plus earlier and current family members including uncles, nephews and now nieces!)

My dad served in the US Navy for 21 years.  One of his earlier cruises was on the USS Yorktown, a sister ship to the USS Intrepid that was pictured in last year's blog post.  So touring the USS Intrepid was 'like' looking at the same ship my dad served on those many years ago. My Dad's ship, the USS Yorktown has also been converted to a museum, and is ported in Patriots Point, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

My dad's dad was also a veteran, serving for his country in WWI. Ollie Hamersky, served under General John J Pershing in Europe, and made it back home after being gassed in the trenches. Unfortunately his childhood buddy, Henry Zerener, (the shorter man in the photo with him at left), never left Camp Funston at Fort Riley, KS.  Henry died from one of the illnesses that was rampant in the States during 1918.

So today, this blog post is dedicated to them, my other past and present family members, And to all the men and women who have served in our armed forces during our nation's history!

As for the comic book connection... War comics have been part of our heritage since even before the USA entered into WWII.

Captain America and other USA patriotic super-heroes in early 1941 helped shape America's thinking about what was going on in Europe before the bombing of Pearl Harbor December 7th.  Captain America was shown punching Adolf Hitler on the cover of  Captain America Comics #1.

Which by the way, was just featured on the November 8th episode of 'Brothers & Sisters'!  Did You catch that?  Scotty Wandell's father Wally is shown to be a long time comic book collector, and gives Scotty a copy of Captain America #1 at the end of the episode so Scotty and Kevin can sell it and then start their family...

Anyways, the comic book cover I chose to adorn the top left of this blog post is just one of thousands that I have owned during my many years of collecting. It was probably due to the fact that aircraft carriers like the one shown on the cover were the biggest man made objects I had seen or been in during my early childhood that made me pick that one up. (The comic is from January 1958.)  On the West Coast and in the Midwest when I visited family back there, there weren't any skyscrapers, so aircraft carriers made a BIG impression on me!

As also previously blogged about, it was my Aunt Marge and Uncle Howard McIntosh that really started me on reading comics.  However my own personal comics collection grew to  a much larger size while our family was stationed at the USN base on Kodiak Island 1963-1966.

That's because that other than fishing or hunting or crabbing, there just wasn't much else to do on an Island that only had a few miles of roads!  Plus at the Navy Base barbershop there were all kinds of comics to read and exchange with!  Yeah, Marvel Comics were hitting it big during that time, but with spotty distribution to Navy Bases, I couldn't always get the next 'continued story' issue, so I also read other comics but exchanged them back for Marvels when available!

Anyways, enough going off on another tangent here this morning...  As you have seen from the above,  Veterans Day, veterans, and war comic books mean something to me.  And No, I'm not a 'hawk' or even a 'dove'.  I just appreciate that comic books have not always been about 'super-heroes'!

My thanks to the veterans, and those veterans that also came back and worked in comics and added a sense of realism into the comic books that they had a hand in creating.

AND... Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts!  We do blog daily on comic book creators, comic book reviews, comic cons, and other pop culture news and events including some TV shows and theatrical films as they are shown!

SPECIAL PHOTO FEATURETTE:   As mentioned above, and also in a few prior blog posts, I really picked up a lot of comics while my Dad was stationed at the Kodiak Naval Air Station on Kodiak Island, Alaska.  My mom, brother, sister, and I joined him there from the Christmas Vacation of 1963 thru August of 1966.

As you can see from the below photo, the Naval base, (in the forefront),  was the prominent feature on that part of the island.  The town of Kodiak is shown at the top of the photo. It is approximately 9 miles away via the only road between the base and the town.  During the years we were up there, there was only one TV Station and the internet hadn't been invented yet.  So for kids, there was only hunting, fishing, crabbing, and collecting comics!

For history buffs:  We left the Naval Air Station in 1966, and shortly afterwards in 1971 the Navy left also.  Today it is a Coast Guard Station.

(Clicking on the photo below, will take you to a much larger resolution photo. When the pop up window comes up... just click on the photo again to see a full screen shot of the photo.)
