TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3689 -   Well... Here's yet another comic book that I found recently from our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC). 

That comic is 'Life in the 1940s'.   As seen at Alison Doran's booth at the Comic-Con, as pictured above!

Twenty-something guys living in the 1940s trying to figure things out.

Okay... Here's 'My Take' on this comic book:

Front Cover -  I first walked past the booth because there was very little at the front table.  However, I did a 'double take' on the front cover, not knowing what it was about.  To me, this simple illustration with the large title caught my eyes.

Inside Front Cover -  Has the 'Forward', which is okay... pure and simple.

Splash Page - Not used... The first page goes right into the storyline, dated December 1942 in Attica, New York.

Interior Pages -  The pages are all black and white... Yet this black and white coloring fit the 1940s scheme of things, so I was okay with it. The storyline seemed to wander just a bit, but by the time I reached page 24, (the end of the story), I was caught up in the story!

Inside Back Cover - A color presentation of Volume 2 is shown, along with the url to IndyPlanet.com where you can pick up this issue, and the mailing address of the Publisher.

Back Cover - The Ka-Blam Girl's ad page for the printer.

All in all, I found that this period piece of the early 1940s, along with the war in Europe, made a good story.  The lack of color interior pages did not matter to me.  Alison Doran appears to have done all of the work on creating this first issue, as I don't see any other credits.  A fine job, and I would be interested in seeing the second volume when it comes out...

My rating for this comic book issue?  A Very Fine Plus (VF+) 8.5 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Thanks to Alison Doran for bringing this issue to my attention at her booth at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:   The Untold Origins Of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3688 -   Well... Here's yet another comic book that I found recently from our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC). 

That comic is 'The Untold Origins Of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil'.  Truth be told, I hadn't heard of this comic strip / comic book character before meeting Michael A Gordon at his booth at the Comic-Con!

Here's what this comic book is about per the publisher's promo:

"As part of the (web site's) launch, a 32-page history entitled The Untold History of Invisible Scarlet O’Neil will be available for sale on line. This first-ever official history features previously-unpublished artwork, photos, and exclusive historical information not available anywhere else. It was compiled by Atlanta-based Atlantis Studios, a well-known sequential art studio that is also working with Russ Stamm, Jr. on a new graphic novel retelling of Invisible Scarlet O’Neil’s classic adventures.

“By the time I was born in 1946 my father was already a well known syndicated cartoonist and his feature character, Scarlet O’Neil, was six years old”, said Russ Stamm, Jr. in a recent interview, “I was fortunate to watch my father at work and see the dedication, energy, and love he put into his art. It is my hope that through this website a new generation can enjoy his work, and get a preview of what she’ll look like in her new incarnation!”

Okay... Here's 'My Take' on this comic book:

Front Cover - Like I said above, I hadn't heard of this comic strip / comic book character before seeing Michael A Gordon at his booth... And I'm sure that most of the readers of this blog haven't either!  So this is a really good intro page for those finding out about the 'Invisible Scarlet O'Neil' for the first time!  With the character prominently shown on the front cover, in front of comic strips of her past.

Inside Front Cover -  Which is 'A Brief Introduction from Russell A Stamm Jr., son of the creator of the invisible Scarlet O'Neil'!   This is a good intro, and helps set up the issue.

Splash Page -  I must tell you, that even though this is printed in comic book format and size, it truly isn't a comic book!  It has a lot of text with photos / comic strips / etc. on each page.  So the 'splash page' asks:  'Who Was The Invisible Scarlet O'Neil?'.  A good start!

Interior Pages - More on 'Invisible Scarlet O'Neil'!  Her past history and her now current day history... Because the last three interior pages are from the new graphic novel, which I have yet to read, and hopefully will be interested enough to review blog!

Inside Back Cover - 'A Word of thanks', which is an acknowledgment to those that helped put together the info that this special issue covers.

Back Cover - A picture of the then upcoming graphic novel!

So... For me, this special issue had it all!  The origin, the history, and the fact that there is a graphic novel in the works at the time of the printing of this comic book.

My rating for this comic book issue?  A Near Mint  (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Thanks to Michael A Gordon for bringing this issue to my attention at his booth at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3687 -   Well... Here's another comic book that I found recently from our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC). 

That comic is Rob Hanes Adventures #13.   Here is my review blog on the series, from #1 - 4 and then 9 - 12.

Here's what Randy Reynaldo, Publisher, has for the promo for this comic book:

"Rob Hanes Adventures #13 will feature two complete stories: “Crime Takes a Holiday” and “Not Your Father’s Private Eye.”

In “Crime Takes a Holiday,” Justice International private investigator Rob Hanes goes on vacation in the French Riviera. However, when he discovers that an international crimelord named Nicolai Korda is also in the area, Rob interrupts his plans for some long-overdue R&R to investigate what his longtime nemesis is up to!

Then, in “Not Your Father’s Private Eye,” Rob gains notoriety when he is the subject of a print and online news magazine article about modern-day private investigators while on assignment in a Middle East country on the verge of regime change. Set in the fictional Middle East kingdom of Koman that has been frequently used in the series, the story echoes the real-life upheavals that have occurred in the Middle East over the past year.

As in all stories in the series, both adventures are complete and self-contained in the issue."

Well... Here's 'My Take' on just issue #13:

Front Cover - You know... I really like this front cover!  Great pose on 'FIND' magazine, and the text stands out just right.  Plus I see there are 2 complete stories!  Let's dig in!

Inside Front Cover -  Which is called the "Rob Hanes Adventures Primer".  Good job telling the reader, whether returning or new to the series, about all you need to know!  Great job!

Splash Page - Not really a splash page, but since there are two complete stories in this issue, I'm not going to complain!

Interior Pages for story #1 - 'Crime Takes A Holiday'.   Not bad, not bad at all!  I like Randy's artwrok and the lettering is just fine for the artwork!  Plus the storyline for these 11 pages fits perfectly!  Great job on this story!

Hanes Briefs - 'The Letters Page' - Good use of the page to separate the two different complete stories in this issue!

2nd Story - 'Not Your Father's Private Eye' - Again, the lettering, text, word balloons, and artwork all mesh very well together.  I'm wondering how this would look in color, but just for a little while, as the story is a good one!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3686 -   Well... Here's another comic book that I found recently from our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC). 

That comic is OZopolis #3.   Here is my review blog on issue #2, and on #1.

Okay... Back?!

Well... Here's 'My Take' on #3:

Front Cover - Interesting pose for the front cover.  Makes me want to immediately open to the inside front cover!

Inside Front Cover - Good layout of the credits for this issue.

Splash Page - Not used... Instead it goes directly to the story, which is in black & white.

Interior Pages -  There is no recap as to what when on in issues #1 & 2, so for a new reader to this series... It could be a little hard to catch up on the storyline!  However, since I've already read those two issues... I'm fine with the story without a splash page and no recap. 

To Be Concluded:  Next issue.  Okay, the story arc will soon be over.  Yet, there is room for a 'Ruling Oz' page and the 'Chapter One' of 'Toto Versus the Fighting Trees' in this issue...?

'Ruling Oz' is an okay feature page, kind of like a 'From the Editor' page...

'Tot Versus the Fighting Trees'... was okay... but not for sure why that feature is in the comic book?

Inside Back Cover - Is the printer's ad page.

Back Cover - Is a nice page, like a 'pinup' page.

Overall, I've got to say that this issue was a fine one, and a good continuation of the series so far.  I'm thinking that if and when this gets re-formatted into a trade paperback, that color would be very good for the interior pages...!

My rating for this comic book issue #3?  A Very Fine / Near Mint  (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Thanks to Publisher Kirk Kushin for bringing this issue to my attention at his booth at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:   His Birthday!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3685 -   Today... Well, today is my Birthday!

Usually, at least for the last four straight years, I've been 'celebrating' my Birthday at the Comic-Con International: San Diego / aka San Diego Comic Con!

This year the Comic-Con was a couple of weeks early, so I'm here at my home office, without 150,000+ people around me, LOL!

Also, because for the past four years I've been at Comic-Con, I haven't had my birthdate showing on my Facebook personal page or fan page, since I would have to reply to messages sent to me at those pages from the Comic-Con.  Which would be hard to do!

So this year, I'm sitting quietly in my home office, and banging out this quick blog acknowledging my special birthday, (I'm turning 60 years old today!).   So yeah, if I can get into the Comic-Con during the August online signup for badges, I can use the 'senior citizen' rate, LOL!

Tina will be taking me out to dinner tonight, so I've got some catching up on paperwork to do, plus acknowledge the 'Happy Birthdays' that have already started coming my way on early Monday evening!

So... Here's a Thank You from me for the 'Happy Birthday' greetings, the 'Likes' on my Facebook Fan Page, and the 'Follows' on this Blog's subscription link!

I'll continue doing what I do best this upcoming year!
