Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Falling Rock National Park Book 6
by Josh Shalek

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3695 -   For those that have been reading this blog for the last couple of weeks... Here's yet another comic book that I found recently from our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC).

That comic book is actually a "TPB" that I found at the Falling Rock National Park booth at Comic-Con.

Here is what this TPB is about per the publisher's promo:

"Falling Rock 2012 – Welcome to Falling Rock National Park, Book 6 (2012)

$9.00 – Includes 67 comics, the best of 2011-2012! Printed under Lorax supervision using soy-based inks on recycled paper."

So I'll start my review next...

Front Cover -  The front cover has an interesting illustration on it... Enough to make me want to dig right into the the inside front cover!

Inside Front Cover - A welcome page stating that this is based on a daily comic strip by Josh Shalek, along with a link to his web site for this property.

Splash Page - This page starts right into the storyline... Not a splash page, but actually a page from the web comic itself!

Interior Pages -  Starts right off with each day's one page web comic. The storyline is what brings me into this web comic.  As this is the sixth book in the printed series.. I guess that the creator has decided not to introduce the characters...  There are 32 interior pages to this published work.

Inside Back Cover - A 'thank you' page, with a brief paragraph of thanks.

Back Cover - One of the daily strips, along with a review...

My take on this TPB?

Well... As per most web comics... The printed version of this feature is a little odd sized when printed / published in hard copy.  However the format for this hard copy is just fine when printed.  The colors on the front and back covers blend in very well, as the interior pages are black and white.  Although I had not read the previous five pubished works, nor read the web comic before, I found that reading this TPB was enjoyable.

My rating for this TPB?  A Very Fine Plus  (VF+) 8.5 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Thanks to Josh Shalek for bringing this TPB to my attention at his booth at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

You can find this TPB for sale at the JoshShalek.com web site.

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3694 -   Well... Would you believe that... Here's yet another comic book that I found recently from our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC).

That comic book is actually a "TPB" that I found at the Pirate Cove booth at Comic-Con.

I would give you what this TPB is about per the publisher's promo... But I don't see one!

So I'll start my review next...

Front Cover -  The front cover is kind of strange... Until you flip to the Back Cover... It's a wrap-a-round cover, LOL!

Inside Front Cover - Blank.

Splash Page - The title page, like in a book.  The next couple of pages are the credit pages.

Interior Pages -  Starts right off with one full page of comics, as this was originally published as a web comic.  There is no real introduction of the characters, but I kind of get it after a few pages. The storylines are pretty good, and I do laugh with / at several pages.  ...

Back Interior Page - A special page on the author, with a link to the web comic page.

Inside Back Cover - Blank.

Back Cover - The back side of the wrap-a-round cover...

My take on this TPB?

Well... Like I said above, this is from a web comic... Which is why the TPB is odd sized.  The fact that the cover is what stood out to me at the Comic-Con is why I picked up this book.  Not being familiar with the web comic nor the characters, it was just a little hard to pick up at first when reading it.

However, I found the storylines to be fun ones, and kind of true to comic cons that I have attended! So this TPB was a pretty good read.  Good enough for me to want to check out the web comic online in the near future.

My rating for this TPB?  A Very Fine Plus  (VF+) 8.5 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Thanks to Joe D'Angelo for bringing this TPB to my attention at his booth at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

You can find this TPB for sale at the Pirate Cove web site.

And don't forget to 'Like' the Pirate Cove Facebook Fan Page!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Invisible Scarlet O'Neil
The Graphic Novel!
 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3693 -   Well... Here's yet another comic book that I found recently from our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC).

That comic book is actually a "graphic novel" that I found at the New Legend Productions booth at Comic-Con.  Matter of fact I've already review blogged the comic book that was about the 'Untold Origins of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil' in blog #3688 as seen here.

Here's what this graphic novel is about per the publisher's promo:

"At long last! The return of the Invisible Scarlet O'Neil! Russell Stamm Jr. and New Legend Productions is proud to present the new graphic novel featuring "America's Miracle Girl!"

Written by Russell Stamm Jr.
Pencils by Wendell Cavalcanti
Inks by Rob Jones & Elton Thomasi
Colors by Kathryn Parker, Adriano Augusto & Alan Faria
Edited and Lettered by Michael A. Gordon
Front Cover Art by Phil Noto."

I'll start my review next...

Front Cover -  An okay cover, but doesn't really get across what the graphic novel is about, IMO, although that would be kind of hard to do...

Inside Front Cover - A full page sheet of the credits... With a link to the web site.  Good inside front cover.

Splash Page - An intro page by Russell Stamm, Jr., written on July 3rd of 2012.  Good background piece for those that are not aware of the back history of this character.

Interior Pages -  Are presented in color, which is good. The storyline was easy to follow, and the artwork meshed well with the storyline. The colors are executed well, and the lettering was fine. I found that the whole package was nicely produced...

Back Interior Page - A special house ad for following Invisible Scarlet O'Neil at her Facebook fan page.

Inside Back Cover - 'House Ad' for 'The Untold Origins of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil', which I already review blogged in blog #3688.

Back Cover - What seems to be an incomplete presentation...

My take on this graphic novel?

Well... I'm glad I read the 'Untold Origins...' comic book first.  Which set me up for reading this graphic novel.  However, fifty years have gone by since the last story of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil, and this new story just didn't keep my full attention for the storyline. Maybe just a little too 'modern' for my tastes?  Still it was a good enough story, and updated for today's reading audience.

My rating for this graphic novel?  A Very Fine Plus  (VF+) 8.5 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Thanks to Michael A Gordon for bringing this graphic novel to my attention at his booth at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

You can find this graphic novel for sale at the Invisible Scarlet O'Neil web site.

And don't forget to 'Like' the Invisible Scarlet O'Neil Facebook Fan Page!

Doctor Atlantis Volume 1
The Trade Paperback (TPB)!
 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3692 -   Well... Here's yet another comic book that I found recently from our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC).

That comic book is actually a "trade paperback" that I found at the Rare Earth Comics booth at Comic-Con.

Here's what this trade paperback is about per the publisher's promo:

"Doctor Atlantis Volume One is in stores the this July!

Follow the steampunk adventures of Dr. Julius Fowler as he discovers strange new lands and does battle with monstrous creatures in his exploration of the endless sea."

I'll start my review next...

Front Cover - Pretty good front cover, IMO.  Crab creatures fighting a seafaring man.  Gives me an idea as to what the interior pages should be like...

Inside Front Cover - A full page sheet of the credits... With Ian Ally-Seals & Carl Mefferd being the cretors.  Ian is also the Editor-In-Chief, with David Robles as the Art Director, Douglass Hansen as Director of Producrtons, and Tim Durning doing the Cover Colors.

Splash Page - A nice illustration of what is actually the start of Chapter One, or issue #1 of the Doctor Atlantis comic book series.

Interior Pages -  Are printed in black and white only... The only disappointing thing in this book.  After seeing what Tim Durning did on the front cover, it would have been nice to see this TPB with color interior pages.  The 3 chapters presented flow well, and make for a good storyline.  Sad to say that the TPB is continued in the next volume...

Back Interior Pages - A couple of special features... 'Concept Art', 'The Life of a Page', and 'The Many Faces of Fowler' are included.  Not for sure if these were printed inside of the comic books also or not.

Inside Back Cover - 'House Ad' for Rare Earth Comics with a link to their web site.

Back Cover - The three front covers to the three comic books reprinted here are shown in color.

My take on this TPB?

Well... You know what?  I liked this TPB!  I thought at first it was a 'graphic novel', not realizing it was a TPB.  The black & white interior pages were the only minor drag on this TPB.

The artwork was fine, and the storyline was darn good!  It was kind of like 'Steampunk' and 'Pirates' put together... The artwork was sort of 'cartoony' and a little exaggerated at times.  But it fit the storyline!

My rating for this TPB?  A Very Fine / Near Mint  (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Thanks to Ian Ally-Seals for bringing this TPB to my attention at his booth at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

You can find this TPB for sale at the Rare Earth Comics web site.

And don't forget to 'Like' the Rare Earth Comics Facebook Page!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Andie And The Alien
The Graphic Novel!
 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3691 -   Well... Here's yet another comic book that I found recently from our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC).

That comic is actually a "graphic novel" that I found at the Bliss On Tap Publishing booth at Comic-Con.

Here's what this graphic novel is about per the publisher's promo:

"by Bliss on Tap Publishing
written & created by Brian Phillipson & Phil Phillipson
art by Alex Nino
color / 108 pages

From the creators of God the Dyslexic Dog comes an extraterrestrial retelling of the classic Aesop's fable "Androcles and the Lion"...

Over 500 years ago, an alien spaceship crashed in the undiscovered Americas.

The little alien was rescued by the local natives.

In return for saving him, the alien promised to protect the natives from foreign invaders by placing a force-field over the Americas -- preventing exploration and colonization of their land -- and altering the course of history as we know it forever.

500 years later, in a world without the United States of America, the Nazi's have just won World War II and rule absolutely.

Until one day, a captured British scientist named Andie, with the help of Albert Einstein (of course!), hatch a plan to rescue the alien and save the future from the Third Reich."

I'll start my review next...

Front Cover - I thought that this front cover was very fine, as the title was 'Andie And The Alien'.  Little did I know what the interior pages were going to be like!

Inside Front Cover - A full page pinup of what appears to be Nazis... Nazis???

Splash Page - A simple illustration of what appears to be a child and the alien.

Interior Pages -  Hey, this graphic novel really rocks!  A great alternate version of world history, where the Americas are never developed by the European powers!   And the 'Why' they aren't developed is kind of cool!  I find the storyline to be fascinating, and the art by Alex... Well it is darn good!  But wait... The storyline seems to wrap up a little 'too' quick, and then there are five full page pinup pages... What's up with that?

Inside Back Cover - Another illustration by Alex.

Back Cover - Alien spaceship and Nazi symbol on building... What's going on?!

My take on this graphic novel?

Well... Even though the storyline ended just a bit too abruptly for me... I have to say that I found this storyline to be a fascinating one!  The characters were well written, the artwork flowed smoothly, the lettering was placed well, etc.  The only thing is that the storyline wrapped up a little too quickly at the very end for me.  Not for sure about the placement of the end scene in relationship to the rest of the story.  But other than that... This graphic novel had everything else going for it!

My rating for this comic book issue?  A Near Mint  (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Thanks to Brian Phillipson for bringing this graphic novel to my attention at his booth at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

You can find this graphic novel for sale at the Bliss On Tap Publishing web site.

And don't forget to 'Like' the Bliss On Tap Publishing Facebook Fan Page!
