Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The:

The San Diego Comic Fest Planning Meeting
Held On Sunday September 9th of 2012

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3714 -   Vinnie and I raced down to Mission Valley after noontime yesterday, Sunday the 9th, right after church services.

That's because it was time for another meeting of the organizers  of the San Diego Comic Fest!  This time it was held at the Eaton Room at the Town and Country Resort in the Mission Valley area of San Diego.

Mike Towry, founder of this brand new revival fest, held the meeting, and there were 25 of us attending it.

I'll share just a few of the items that were covered at the meeting:

First, Peter Csanadi and I took photos of the meeting.  My thanks to Peter for the photo used at the top right of this blog post!   My photos will be uploaded at this special photo album at my Facebook fan page.

As of yesterday, it is only 7 weeks away before the start of the first San Diego Comic Fest!

The room nights minimum has been met!  Oh, and if you are from out of town, you can also stay at the Town and Country Resort at our San Diego Comic Fest rate!

The Dealers Room... Has been SOLD OUT!    So the hotel liason is checking to see about obtaining another venue to add on more dealers!

Volunteers are needed!   Here is the new 'Volunteers' tab at the San Diego Comic Fest web site.

Yes... There will be an Artists Alley at the Comic Fest!  Matter of fact, it may placed in a special room... More on that later.  Be sure to contact the Comic Fest if you are interested in a spot!

Ed Cormier brought to our attention that Lou Curtiss & his wife Virginia, will be playing at the Comic Fest!

Look for the upcoming article about the San Diego Comic Fest in THE READER!

The Art Show was discussed... There will be art displayed and / or for sale via silent auction!

Watch for an upcoming YouTube Channel from the San Diego Comic Fest!

Jerry Beck is doing a program on the '75th Anniversary of Daffy Duck'!

More flyers, shown at the top left in the photo at this blog's right header, came in from the printer.  So they will be heading out to where they have been requested.

There will be a Souvenir Book from the Comic Fest... With Scott Shaw! doing the cover!

Paul Sammon will be hosting a '15th Anniversary of Starship Troopers' panel.

The Blood Drive is still projected to be happening at the Comic Fest!

Again... For photos that I took of this meeting and of the Town and Country Resort area that the San Diego Comic Fest will be at, please see this special photo album.

That's it for this past weekend's meeting...

Be sure to 'Like' the Facebook Fan Page for the San Diego Comic Fest!  It's coming up soon... October 19th through the 21st!

Oh, and also click the 'Attending' link at the Facebook Event Page!

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The:

'Monsters Meet' Book Release Party
Held On Saturday September 8th

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3713 -   Tina, Vinnie, and I attended the 'Monsters Meet' Release Party yesterday, late afternoon, at Comickaze Comics in San Diego, California.

What was that about?  Well, here's a promo from the pre-event:

On Saturday Sept 8th from 4-6pm, Batton Lash will debut his newest Supernatural Law Collection, The MONSTERS Meet on COURT Street.

We're really excited to be able to help Batton launch this new book, the first in four years and we'd love all of you to come meet one of San Diego's own!

Batton Lash, who in addition to his own Supernatural Law series, wrote the notorious Archie Meets The Punisher and many Simpsons projects for Bongo, including some of our favorite Treehouse of Horror stories. Plus he is, flat out, just one very cool dude!

Okay...  Well, we attended, AND... Had a Lot of fun doing so!  Plus, several others who attended did also!

Here's the link to the special photo album of pics taken at the event.

Here's the link to my YouTube Channel, where I will be posting a few videos from the event.

We picked up a copy of the TPB, and after Tina is finished reading it, I'll post her review blog in this Blog.

Batton presented his book to those attending, took in several questions, and answered them, plus was on hand to personally sign copies of the book that were sold at the shop.  To the left is a photo of Batton Lash and myself with my copy of his new book!

There was also a great veggie tray, cookies & mini-cake trays, plus sodas.  And, as a special surpise, Batton's wife, Jackie Estrada, was surprised with an early Birthday Day Cake!  Happy Birthday, Jackie!

The event filled the ComicKaze Comic Book Shop, as you will see in the photos and videos. The owner, Robert Scott, stated that he hadn't had as many people in his shop at one time since the last Free Comic Book Day, (FCBD)!

My thanks to Robert, Batton, and Jackie Estrada for putting on a great presentation and book signing at this local comic book shop!

If you missed attending this event, and would be interested in a copy of the book for yourself... Check out this link:  The Monsters Meet on Court Street: And Other Tales of Supernatural Law.

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Getting Married
and Other Mistakes
by Barbara Slate

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3712 -   I received this book a while back, read it, and placed it in my 'To Review Blog' stack.  I've been blogging about comics history this week, and am now back to review blogging comics / graphic novels, so this is the first one I wanted to blog about.

Why this publication?  Well, here is the publisher's promotional piece about this book:

"After having been a good girl and following her mother’s advice to snag a husband before she became a twenty-something spinster, Barbara Slate realized that her Mr. Right was actually Mr. Wrong and that she was living her life according to everyone’s rules but her own. After twelve years of an unblissful marriage, she made her escape.
Now this accomplished comic artist lets it all out in a savagely funny and emotionally honest fictional narrative. Jo, her stand-in protagonist, is a successful wedding photographer (of all things) who has been dumped by her husband and desperately needs to get on with her life. She follows her friends’ advice to get laid, see a shrink, go out more, and live a little. Nothing works. Eventually she realizes that she must stop listening to what everybody else tells her and follow her own voice instead.
Jo’s struggle with female guilt and her quest for self-awareness, told in a series of hilarious panels, is the perfect book for any woman needing to take back control of her life, or remembering when she did."

Okay, so what's 'My Take' on this book?

Front Cover:  A nice traditional front cover...  It was also appealing to me, and I opened up the book after seeing this and reading the back cover.

Inside I found that the artwork and the dialogue intrigued me into reading it all in two sittings. Even being a 'guy', I found this book to be heartwarming as well as an interesting read.   And you know what?  With Jo's struggle with 'female guilt' and her quest for 'self-awareness', this book really hit me with the seriousness of the subjects.

I found each page to be very readable, and other than a couple of words, this book is suitable reading for older teens and up.  Plus Barbara's humor shines through the panels, which makes for even better reading!

Indeed, graphic novels are not all about superheroes, and Barbara Slate has done a fine job in presenting this graphic novel for public consumption!

I would give this book a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

For those of you not familiar with Barbara Slate... She has created, written and drawn over 300 comic books and graphic novels, including Angel Love, Yuppies from Hell, Disney's Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas, Marvel Comics 'Barbie' and 'Barbie Fashion', among other creations.

Catch up with Barbara at her own web site, BarbaraSlate.com.

There is also a Facebook Fan Page for the book at: Getting Married and Other Mistakes..

You can easily purchase this book at this online seller if it isn't available at your normal place of purchase:  Getting Married and Other Mistakes !

So... Why Are So Many Marvel Comics From The Mid-1970's Cut Up ??

So... Why Are So Many Marvel Comics From The Mid-1970's Cut Up?

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3711 -   Just had an email from a potential customer who asked me to check my comic book before he clicked a 'Buy It Now' link on my comic book listing in my online comic book shop.   That's because he learned the hard way about why so many comics from the 1970s are cut up!

That's right!  If You own a Marvel comic book from the time period of 1974-1976, your comic book may be incomplete !

Why????

Well back in March of 1974, Marvel Comics ran a campaign that enticed readers to cut out a certain portion of each comic!

Every month pictures of its most popular characters, either heroes or villains, were printed onto the Letters Pages section of various comics.  The Letter Page would be where Stan Lee or others of the 'Bullpen' printed either editorials, coming attractions or fan mail.

The pictures appeared in the format of a numbered 'stamp'.  To the chagrin of today's collectors the readers of the comics were encouraged to both "clip 'em and collect 'em".  Yikes !!

Ultimately there were 100 different stamps in the set and those first 100 are referred to as the 'Series A'  group.

Later on that year, in-house ads were printed to entice the reader to send away for a Mighty Marvel Value Stamp Book to place their 'Value Stamps' in.  The cost of the book was just 50 cents.

Unfortunately for collectors, the campaign was so successful that in December of 1975 Marvel produced a second set, referred to as 'Series B'.  This group consisted of 100 value stamps too, but these were really different from the first set.  Each of the stamps was not of an individual character but a single piece that formed one full image, similar to a puzzle.

Once again, in-house printed ads in the comics offered another Mighty Marvel Value Stamp Book to paste them into for the same price of only 50 cents!

So coming to today, a Marvel Comic from this 1974 - 76 era with its Marvel Value Stamp clipped out loses most of its  value.  It is so necessary to stress when listing a comic with the stamp out, that when grading such a comic, there is a term specifically created to identify it, the 'Marvel Value Stamp Flaw'.

I check each of the comics that I list in my online comic shop at ComicBooksCircus.com.  For those of you interested in Marvel comic books we have several of their comics listed in our shop right now!

~ Michael

Think You Have What It Takes to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse?
Check it out September 15th - 16th

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3710 -   Today's blog is a guest blog from Tina LoSasso!

Think You Have What It Takes to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse?

Find out at the Comikaze Zombie Apocalypse at the LA Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16.

You've watched the movies, devoured the comics and are probably (like me) in withdrawal from A&E's The Walking Dead, but what have you learned about surviving in a world overrun by zombies? Do you think you have what it takes to beat back the relentless hordes of undead to stay alive?

Now you can test your skills in this zombie survival course packed with 75,000 square feet of brain-eating, head-bashing, flesh-chomping fun!

Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo invades the LA Convention Center on September 15-16. The Zombie Apocalypse Survival Course is an exciting addition this year.

This is your chance to kick some zombie butt. As a Survivor, you'll run, crawl, and climb your way through the long, snaking course infested with zombies at every turn.

Or maybe you want to join the ranks of the undead and eat some brains? YOU CAN BE A ZOMBIE! Professional special effects artists will transform you into a fleshing-eating monster before they turn you loose on the course to terrorize the Survivors. Awesome!

Learn more about the course, times, and ticket information at this link!

NOTE: YOU MUST PURCHASE A COMIKAZE TICKET TO GET INTO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE

Learn more about Stan Lee's Comikaze at this link!
