Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:   Burger Force #1-3    by Jackie Ryan of Burger Force Comics As Seen At ComiKaze Expo On September 15

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3720 -   I found Jackie Ryan's table at the recent 2012 Stan Lee's ComiKaze Expo.

There I found her comic book series, and was interested enough in what I saw to film a video of me interviewing Jackie, which is shown below:  

Here's what the comic book is about, per her promo:

Having trouble with that pesky threat to civilization? Diabolical masterminds getting you down? Relax and turn up the theme music. The agents at your local takeaway are already on the case.

In a secret facility located beneath the Burger Berserker takeaway, undercover operatives set aside thick shakes and fries to thwart assain line-dancers, nefarious dating agency schemes, and cock-rockers gone (even more) wrong.

Into this strange world wanders the even stranger Mercury, a hapless young man with an unusual and unwanted talent, the burger team is tasked with discovering whether Mercury can help save the world as they know it, or if that world needs saving from Mercury!

So far there are twelve comics in this series.  I've read issues #1 - 3.

Okay, back?

I'm not going to do my usual 'review' of front cover, inside front cover, splash page, interior pages, etc....

Instead, I'm going to say that the three 'episodes' that I read were like storyboards / filmed scenes from 'Burger Force'.   The front covers are in color, while the interior pages are black & white.

The whole three issues I read are like scenes from a movie, which is probably why the series is twelve issues long (at this point). 

The artwork is 'realistic' in nature.  The plotline is also 'realistic'.  Other than some Australian words like 'takeaway', the dialogue is very understandable. 

This project's text was started in 1999.  Over the next ten years, Jackie has developed the comics / short films / etc. for 'Burger Force'.  The first 'shoot' was in December of 2008. The comic began to appear online in September of 2009.  There are other episodes that are being offered online.

I found these first three issues of the series to be really fascinating... and worth your taking a look!

I give this comic book series of three issues that I read a comic book grade of a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:   Spadra #1    by Grasiela Rodriguez of Not Your Friend Comic Books As Seen At ComiKaze Expo On September 15

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3719 -   Tina and I found Grasiela Rodriguez's table at the 2012 Stan Lee's ComiKaze Expo near the end of the day on Saturday, September 15th.

She had a table at the far South end of the large convention center hall, and it took some time to wind our way over there.

I'm glad we did find her... As the comic book she is holding in the photo above, 'Spadra', is one that I have already read, and placed at the top of the 'To Be Blogged' stack!

Here's what the comic book is about, per her promo:

Meet Billy Rubottom, the founder of Spadra and then take a ride with the Bride in the Stagecoach! Ghostly Appropriations Of A Town That Time Forgot.

Standard Comic, Full Color, Page Count: 16

I found that even though the page count was a little low in numbers, the quality of the presentation worked for me.  Interesting that there really was a town named 'Spadra' in the area of California!

The front cover was a pinup of Grasiela's unusual art, which I like. (See my review blog of her Lunatic Fringe #1). 

The inside front cover had a scroll map of 'Early Spadra - 1837', which added visualization to the comic book.

The first story, 'El Muerto - The Headless Horseman of Elephant Hill' was portrayed very well in color and black & white.  The story was shown in a semi-pinup style, with only one or two panels per page.  Which in this story, I liked!

The second story, 'The Bride In The Stagecoach', was a four page story, yet there was a lot in those eight panels!

The inside back cover page was a text piece on 'Early Spadra'.  Good background info!

The back cover was the seal of the City of Spadra, and advertising info.

I gotta say... I give this comic book a comic book grade of a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!   It was nice seeing Grasiela again, this time at ComiKaze Expo, and seeing this newest published work of hers from 'Not Your Friend Comics'!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents:   Fans Fill LA Convention Center for Stan Lee's ComiKaze Expo    by Guest Blogger Tina LoSasso September 15 & 16

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3718 -   Fans Fill LA Convention Center for Stan Lee's Comikaze

It happens at least once every year at SDCC. Some ignorant panelist, moderator, vendor or comic book 'fan' makes a disparaging remark about Stan Lee. I want to give them a Thing-size smack down. One, since when is it cool to bash someone who's not in the room? Two, Stan sounds just like my old NYC relatives so I take this personally. Three, where the heck do these haters think THEIR careers would be, if not for what Stan Lee has done for comics?!

Fortunately, all those jerks stayed home this weekend and the LA Convention Center was taken over by True Believers and some just plain folks who wanted to take a gander at Stan. They got their fill. They got Stan interviews, Stan Q&A's, Stan signings (at a price), Stan announcements, sneak peaks and a showing of "With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story (a great documentary for fans and non-fans alike).

With digital cameras flashing overhead, fans swarmed the main stage mosh pit for every Stan appearance. Frantic screams went up when Stan was spotted in the hallways...much to his amusement. Tiny squirming, crying fans were shushed with "Honey, it's Stan Lee -- he made Spider-Man." (Hey, I didn't correct them. You try explaining co-creation to a 4-year-old.)

After last year's inaugural Comikaze, the organizers brought Stan Lee in to lend his name, and it worked. Fans came by the tens of thousands. Hordes braved the 100 degree heat waiting outside to get in on Saturday. Many gave up when registration bogged down. To make up for the difficulties, the organizers honored unredeemed Saturday tickets on Sunday, and they even got Activision to kick in $10/ticket toward the Zombie Apocalypse Survival Course which seemed to boost participation.

What did we see besides Stan Lee?

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, unveiled cover art for her new comic book, curled up with fans for (paid) signings, and showcased her treasure trove of Elvira memorabilia for attendees. (We got a big kick out of the Elvira satin pillow cases!) Cassandra has retired her Elvira persona, but she still looks amazing and she clearly charmed the crowd.

We thoroughly enjoyed the parade of enthusiastic cosplayers throughout the weekend, but didn't appreciate waiting for the 55-minute late start of Saturday's Cosplay Contest on the main stage. The contestants were ALL fabulous, but, between you and me, those Steampunk X-Men were robbed!

Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flannery had fans roaring at the Boondock Saints panel which mysteriously time traveled from Sunday at the main stage to Saturday in the big meeting room. Fortunately, I'd headed upstairs to check out the panels and walked smack into the line so I didn't miss it. (Some fan boys I met Sunday morning were not so lucky.) Despite the scheduling snafu, the room was packed. The stars of the cult flicks shared crazy stories, answered even crazier questions (example: When Willem Dafoe dressed up like a woman, were you strangely arroused?), led the audience in a recitation of The Prayer from the movie, and tried out their Irish accents once more time.

The Nerd Dating Game, hosted by husband and wife team Destin Pfaff and Rachel Federoff of HBO's Millionnaire Matchmaker, was a great concept with poor execution. Destin and Rachel tried their best, but unfortunately, the contestants  apparently never saw the original show or didn't understand the concept or the value of a well-placed double-entendre. Crude and graphic language took over, making the audience uncomfortable.

We caught a few serious panels. I enjoyed hearing Marv Wolfman (Blade, The New Teen Titans) and Zak Penn (The Avengers, Alphas), share their thoughts on writing for transmedia. Kyle Winters and Mike Andersen gave an education panel on Kickstarter. Unlike most con panels, this one was packed with concrete tips on exactly how to use the crowdfunding giant and why. (I took notes for my business authors!) The Womanthology panel was the first all-woman panel I've attended at any Con that didn't embarrass me as a woman. Smart woman making their way in business and art - no matter the obstacles - is always great to see.

The Zombie Apocalypse Survival Course seemed to pick up on Sunday. To be frank, it looked rather ho-hum from the outside. But, thanks to our press credentials, we got inside to observe - and that's where it got scary. I wasn't participating and my heart started racing when those undead came after me! The professional FX artists really did a great job on the zombies, some of whom really got into their roles. A few were way too quick for a zombie, but most were deliciously disgrusting and creepy. Overhead as "survivors' left the course, "How'd you do? "I got bit." "I want to do it again."

Over the weekend, we checked out every exhibit table for artists, writers, and publishers. This wasn't a DC-Marvel-type show, exhibitors were mostly small press, independents and self-published creators which gave fans, many of whom appeared to be at their first show, a chance to interact with creators.

Stan Lee's Comikaze appeared to be a success despite the registration challenges and numerous scheduling changes. Attendees were having a fun time and seemed to look forward to next year, (November 1st through 3rd of 2013).

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:   Stan Lee's ComiKaze Expo 2012  September 15 & 16 @LA Convention Center

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3717 -   Tina and I are back from attending the 2012 Stan Lee's ComiKaze Expo that ran Saturday & Sunday this past weekend...

Second, here are my thoughts on this year's convention, along with thoughts on improvements from last year's first ever ComiKaze:

The convention hall was much improved over last year's.  Instead of being in an underground parking lot, this year's Expo was on the 2nd floor.  Much better location! 

The master layout was pretty well planned... With certain sections blocked off for other access, including the ComiKaze Zombie Apocalypse, Star City Games, Elvira's Macabre Museum, Stan Lee's Mega Museum, and more.

The panels were actually held off the convention floor, up on the 3rd floor.  Much better for those!  The only exception was the convention floor stage, which was at the middle of the convention hall, at the back.   With no chairs!  It was tough standing on the concrete floor for the 45 - 60 minutes of each panel / program held there.  Plus there were several changes in schedule that didn't exactly get out to everyone, so there was some confusion in what was happening and when at the convention hall stage.

The line to get in on Saturday was quite long, and several people in line outside the convention hall, in the 100 degree heat gave up and left.  However, on the ComiKaze Expo Facebook fan page, there was a note on Sunday morning that they would honor those Saturday slips on Sunday for those that had given up on Saturday to get in.  I noticed that Sunday was much better in getting in, but those in line were kept outside in the heat again, at least at 10:30 on Sunday morning when I checked.

There wasn't an 'Artist Alley' per se on the convention floor... Just rectangular shaped formations, and the artists were spread throughout the convention floor.  Which made it tough to see all of them on Saturday.  I made it through all the aisles on Saturday, so on Sunday, Tina and I mostly attended panels upstairs.

There were vendors on the convention floor, and Saturday there were so many people there that in some areas it was hard to navigate through the aisles.  Which is good that the Expo drew in that many attendees, but bad that the flow of traffic was interrupted.

I found the panels upstairs to be of good quality, and the topics were varied.  Either I or Tina will be blogging on a few of those in the near future, plus uploading videos from the panels to my YouTube Channel at Michael D Hamersky On Comics.

On Sunday, we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Carpinelli, father of Regina and Fabiano, who are the organizers of this ComiKaze Expo.  He has every right to be proud of his kids who have vastly improved this Expo over last year's first ever con.  Just a little more tweaking is needed for the upcoming 3rd Stan Lee's ComiKaze Expo to make it run smoother... That Expo will be held next November 1st through 3rd in 2013!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:   The Jungle Book Issues #1 - 4 From Zenescope Comics

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3716 -   I'm going to 'review blog' the first four issues of the five issues in this Limited Comic Book Series from Zenescope Comics.  I have posted two of the front covers from the four issues that have already been printed above.

Here's what the Publisher has as promo literature about the first four issues:

Grimm Fairy Tales presents The Jungle Book

A pirate ship carrying four children crashes on the shore of a mysterious and merciless jungle. Each child is taken by a separate tribe of animals as a means to keep the peace between the species. It is a peace that will not last...

Issue #1 - Fifteen years later the children have now become young adults and each will have to face the destiny that awaits them in the unforgiving jungle. A place where only the strong will survive. Zenescope brings you their newest reinvention of a classic tale that is going to blow you away!

Issue #2 - here Kahn prepares to strike at the very heart of the wolf clan beginning with his most hated rival and Mowglii's surrogate mother, mother wolf. Meanwhile Mowglii’s wanderings bring her face to face with one of the most ferocious creatures in the jungle, the vicious bear Baloo. And her first encounter with the beast may very well prove to be her last.

Issue 3  - begins right where issue two left off as Mowglii is dealing with a harsh truth and remembering how things once here. She later finds herself in the clutches of the enemy. But, through chaos, may just find an opportunity to escape. All eyes are on Mowglii as she struggles through the trials she is faced with.

Issue 4 - Mowglii and Baloo escapes from the clutches of the insane apes of the island only to find themselves faced against the deadliest creature in all the wild: Kaa, the giant Python. And even the combined strength of Bomani, Mowglii, and Baloo may not be enough to stop him from devouring them all.

Okay... So the above pretty much details out what the limited series has been about so far...

So what did think of it, considering the limited series is not yet concluded, (it will be in issue #5).

Well the first issue kind of took my attention, but I didn't have the other issues as of yet.  So I waited to see what those issues would look like.

I received issues 2 - 4 all at one time, and read them all in sequence.

You know... Not Bad... Not Bad at all!

The storyline is different from the book I believe this series was based on... But overall, so far... This story is pretty darn good!  And the art... Well the art is pretty darn good also!  Sure, some of the animals presented could be illustrated a bit better, but overall... I think the artwork and the colors used fit the storyline quite well!

The multiple covers that are issued for each issue look okay from the thumbnails presented on the inside front covers... But I'm not really paying attention to those sales incentives.

I have found that the first four issues of this five issue story arc to be quite good, and wanted to bring this series to your attention in this blog!

My comic book grade for issues #1 - 4 equal out to a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 grade, out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.
