Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents A Video of the...   Bring on The Lucha Heroes...   60 Years of Mexican Masked Wrestlers In Comics!   Presented by Keith J. Rainville at the 2013 Latino Comics Expo in Long Beach, California     TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3934 -     This past weekend I traveled to Long Beach for the 1st Annual Latino Comics Expo in the Los Angeles Metro Area.  I've already blogged my review of the show in blog #3932.   I also mentioned the panels that were held. The one I'm blogging about today is the special power point presentation by Keith Rainville, with guests J. Gonzo, luchador Lestat, Dan Madigan, and Rafael Navarro.   I found the presentation to be a fascinating one, and continued filming it after the normal 5 minutes I usually film at one time were up.  The entire video is 20 minutes in duration, but Keith covers a lot of history in this presentation.   The slideshow has been uploaded to my YouTube Channel.  It is also presented to the right of this blog text.   Keith's email address is unknownpubs@yahoo.com should you wish to contact him. Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That...   It Was Forty (40) Years Ago This Week...     That He Sat Up As A Comic Book Dealer At The San Diego Comic Con at the Sheraton Hotel, On Harbor Island, in San Diego, California!     TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3933 -     This past weekend I traveled to Long Beach for the 1st Annual Latino Comics Expo in the Los Angeles Metro Area.   While there I talked with the organizers about their show, and that I had been involved in comic cons since 1972, when I bought out a comic book dealer on Saturday, and took over his table on Sunday.    This was at the El Cortez Hotel, when the Con was then known as "San Diego's West Coast Comic Convention".  I did so well there on the final day of the con, that I knew I had to buy in for the next year!   It was in 1973 that I reserved my own table in the Dealers Room, and that was the first year that the con was called "San Diego Comic Con".    The photo of myself with the long hair and the boxes of comics can be seen to the second from the top right of the next column.   Other photos from the1973 SDCC are also shown to the right, from the Shel Dorf Collection.   It didn't seem that long ago just talking about it this weekend... But upon reflection... 1973 was a loooong time ago!   More photos are shared at the special 1973 San Diego Comic Con photo album at my Facebook Fan Page!   Also, there are a few photos from the 1972 San Diego Comic Con photo album at the same fan page!   I have another photo of myself from the 1973 SDCC that I need to upload, as soon as I find that again, AND the copy of the check that I used to purchase my $40 table at that convention!   Oh, and for those of you that have a copy of the 1973 SDCC program book, I'm listed in the Membership List as member #174 Michael D Hawersky (dealer).  That was a typo with 'Ham' spelled as 'Haw' in Hamersky.  See photo at bottom right of this blog text.   So I wanted to share with all of you today this special anniversary of mine...   I'm not one of the earliest comic book fans in comics fandom, as evidenced by the 50th Anniversary Reunion of Comics Fandom held at the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, (see this special blog on that topic), but I was near the beginning of the San Diego Comic Con as a comic book dealer!   My thanks again to those that started the San Diego Comic Con, including Shel Dorf and Richard Alf, who have passed away in the last few years...   ~Michael Scan of the flyer for the 1973 San Diego Comic Con with the Guests & Prices!  The photo from 1973 when the 'San Diego Comic Con' was held at the Shearaton Hotel on Harbor Island in San Diego, California.   The con ran from August 16th thru August 19th! Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...   The 2013 Latino Comics Expo - Los Angeles   Held at MOLAA In Long Beach, California!   TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3932 -     Yesterday I traveled to Long Beach to attend the first ever Latino Comics Expo held  in the Los Angeles Metro Area.   I had already blogged about this then upcoming event in my blog #3926.   Javier Hernandez & Ricardo Padilla were the hosts of this comic book expo.   The show was held at the MOLAA, Museum of Latin American Art.  Here is the link to its Facebook Fan Page.   I drove up from Carlsbad, California, and it was a pleasant Saturday morning drive for me.  It took me about an hour and a half to arrive there.   Getting there early, I followed a couple of comics artists I knew to the location at the back of the building.   There I met Javier who greeted me warmly and invited me in.   The early photos taken, and shared at the special photo album at my own Facebook Fan Page, show the Expo before it opened.   I started going up and down the rows laid out in the large room.   There were several Latino & Latina creators there from the San Francisco Bay Area, where the Latino Comics Expo had been held for the past three years.    It was good to see them!  Plus seeing the comics creators I already knew from years of hitting Los Angeles based comic cons!   There were four panels held yesterday, starting at 12PM and the last one starting at 3PM.   I attended three of them:   The DIY Comics panel - Hosted by Javier Hernandez.   The Jim Lujan Cartoon Show - hosted by Jim.   Bring on the Lucha Heroes: 60 Years of Mexican Masked Wrestlers in Comics - hosted by Keith Rainville.   I enjoyed all three of the above panels!  I will be blogging about the Lucha Heroes panel later.   It took me from about 10:30 AM to 5PM to see it all!   Of course I did stop and chat with almost all of the comics creators in the large room!   In addition there was a Food Truck in attendance!  I enjoyed the Dirty Sanchez hamburger with pastrami for lunch!  Good job, El Burger Luchador!   The Latino Comics Expo runs Saturday through today, Sunday.    The neat thing is that today the cost of admittance is FREE!  Thanks to Target Department Stores for that!   So if YOU are in the Los Angeles Metro Area today, check it out!   Here's the link to the Facebook Event Page for the Latino Comics Expo, so you can check out the address, etc.   Again, the Expo runs from 11AM to 5PM Today!  There are 4 panels in the Screeming Room, and three programs in the Kid's Craft Room.    And... The Latino Comics Expo is FREE to attend today!!  And it is kid-friendly!   I definitely enjoyed myself at this Latino Comics Expo!    Javier & Ricardo can be proud of the first ever Expo held in the Los Angeles Metro Area!    Be sure to go there today if YOU are in the LA Metro Area!   ~Michael The front of the molaa building in Long Beach, California, where the Expo was held! Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...   The 2013 Dinner & A Movie Night   At the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park In Carlsbad, California!   TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3931 -     Yesterday morning, I blogged that Tina and I would be attending the 2013 Dinner & A Movie Night at the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park in Carlsbad, California, where we live.   Here it is Saturday morning, and I've got to get ready for the Latino Comics Expo in Long Beach... But it doesn't start until 11 AM.  So I've got time to post this blog & upload the photos from the event last night first!   Well... Tina & I arrived at the Leo Carrillo Ranch at 6PM, and I stood in line to pick up our welcome package, while Tina found us a place to sit at the tables area.     There were at least 150 attendees at this gathering, and all were there earlier than the regular Film Festival Nights crowds!   Tina found us a good spot, and I elected not to bring in our chairs to sit up close on the lawn afterwards.   There was a musician there playing tunes that I recognized, and the music added to the atmosphere.   At 6:30 PM the lines to the buffett food opened and I was among the first to be in line, as I was taking photos of the event, which will be uploaded to the special photo album at my Facebook Fan Page.   There was also a Silent Auction running, which in addition to the charge of the Dinner & a Movie Night event, were funds to pay for the 2013 Leo Carrillo Film Festivial Season.  Tina and I placed a bid on one of the items, but were outbid...   The food was catered and was great!  Both a meat eaters meal and a vegetarian table.   Tina and I both enjoyed the meal, plus tea, lemonade & coffee.   The Silent Auction ran for quite a while, and ended shortly after the episode of the Cisco Kid was aired.   The short program of speakers was nice, and then the winners of the Silent Auctions were announced.   Then the evening's film was aired, a 60 minute WWII era film, titled 'Moonlight and Cactus'.  The 1944 film starred the Andrew Sisters and Leo Carrillo!   Tina and I had seen this short film at the Leo Carrillo Film Festival a few seasons back.  I was once again entertained by the girls, and of course Leo.   Leo acted a lot like 'Pancho' on the later Cisco Kid TV Show series IMO.    Sitting outside under the stars added to the atmosphere of the film.  I could imagine Leo out there with his friends watching the film in the 1940s...   Last night was a great night for me.  I'm really glad that Tina and I were able to attend!   I'll be blogging about the rest of the Film Season in the weeks to follow, as the 2013 Season starts next Friday Night, August 23rd.   Tina and I will be missing that one, but are reserved for the following four nights of the Season.  Here is the link to my blog explaining the 2013 Leo Carrillo Film Season. Of course we brought a bottle of wine with us to the event!  The caterers had two lines, one for the pulled pork folks, and one for the vegetarian line!    The event had a few speakers, like Charles Balteria at the right, and some nice music by the guitarist!  A really nice evening was had by all 150+ atttendees to this 2013 Dinner and a Movie Night!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That Tonight Is The...    Dinner & A Movie Event   Kicking Off The 2013 Leo Carrillo Film Festival Season at the Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad, California!     TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3930  -        Tina and I've had a change in plans for tonight.  We were going to the TGIF Jazz in the Park Concert...
